Home automation request: "Ok google, schedule me to be at work at 9 AM. Posted: 19 Jan 2021 08:26 AM PST You want to be at work tomorrow at 9AM... Okay, I'll continue to check the traffic beforehand so I know when to schedule your alarms. (progressively checks traffic info approaching 9AM)... It will take you approximately 21 minutes to get there. I know that it takes you 12 minutes to get ready, and 30 minutes to fully wake up while you scroll through reddit, so I'll wake you up at 7:57AM(9:00AM - 21+12+30(63 minutes)). I'll set a first alarm at 7:57AM to let you know that it's time to start waking up. I'll also set a critical alarm at 8:27AM to alert that there is no more time to waste, and you must start getting ready if you want to be on time. What's your solution for having this? I am a technician and I have to be at different sites at different times several days out of the week. I have some sleep anxiety and it's difficult for me to get a good quality sleep around the last hour before I wake up because I'm constantly panicking about not knowing if I am miscalculating what time to wake up, or missing my first alarms. It's all really confusing to keep track of when you're groggy af. [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Jan 2021 06:48 PM PST Switched to Alexa and she was flawless for almost a year. Now, it's the same shit that google did toward the end. Have to scream multiple times to get Alexa to hear me/do a simple task. [link] [comments]
Does anyone know how to add your own replies to 'Google Hangouts Chat'? Posted: 19 Jan 2021 11:21 PM PST Goggle has a feature called smary replies which provides suggested responses, I want to add more responses to the suggested responses [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Jan 2021 07:31 PM PST I just got a 1m 144led ws2812b strip in the mail and when I set it all up it doesn't come on, everything works fine when I use my 5m 30 led strip. The strip itself says 5v on it and I have everything wired the exact same [link] [comments]

Alexa Blind opener but for Single string? Posted: 19 Jan 2021 11:20 AM PST I have wood slat blinds. They use a single pull string to open https://content.blinds-2go.co.uk/content/product-images/frost-white-20-wooden-blind-50-a.jpg see to the right side single string for open and left side is for tilt. Is there no electric adapters for single strings? [link] [comments]
Cheapest (non RGB) Zigbee smart bulb? Posted: 19 Jan 2021 06:19 PM PST Basically the title. As long as they turn on and off, that's all I need from them. Being able to control warmth of color is a bonus but not a requirement. I have a bunch of chandeliers that need to get retrofitted with smart bulbs (E26) so saving even $5 would make a big difference. Ideally I'd use a smart switch, but I have pretty old electricals in my early-1900s built house and I'd rather not mess with that. The cheapest I've found are the Homedepot Ecosmarts--which are fantastic but I'm hoping there are cheaper ones. [link] [comments]
WIZmote stopped working after one use Posted: 19 Jan 2021 05:05 PM PST I tried out a couple Phillips Wiz bulbs and got 2 WIZmote remotes to control each of the bulbs. They worked great at first, but then my kids hit the switch shutting off the bulbs, and now the remotes won't work at all. I've tried unpairing and re-pairing, but no luck. When I try to re-pair, the remote blinks once and doesn't connect. Am I missing something? [link] [comments]

Posted: 19 Jan 2021 04:54 PM PST Hello Humans! I recently switched from Amazon Fire TV Cube to a Google TV (it's much faster) but it doesn't have good voice controls. I've had the harmony hub and it sucked. I was looking into the Broadlink pro because I like the idea of controlling my window AC unit. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance! Smart Plug Safety Concerns on Large Appliances? Posted: 19 Jan 2021 04:42 AM PST Hi all, I wanted to ask if anyone else is concerned with the safety of using a smart plug on their large appliances such as, dishwashers, washers, and dryers for energy monitoring and notifications. I am very interested in receiving notifications when my appliance have run their cycles, but I have seen the photos of melted smart plugs from heaters and other energy intensive items. This concerns me that they may be fire hazards. I would assume large appliances, such as these, would also be very demanding. - Is this a valid concern? - For those who do use this method, what plugs do you use? - What is the highest rated smart plug I can buy? I have seen some people using contact sensors and vibration sensors for their notifications. If notifications are my primary wish, would this be a better option? [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Jan 2021 03:46 PM PST Hi all, I've finally taken the plunge and gotten a rpi setup with HA. I only have one cat5 cable that I need for my wireless router, so I've been attempting to get the wifi working but I just cannot make it function correctly! I'm using a USB stick partitioned as CONFIG with the correct sub-folders and I'm using the app 'brackets' to create the text file containing my SSID and password (mac) Is there any small thing like quotes around the SSID or something that people normally miss? I've watched tutorials online but when they cover this part all of the text is too small to read. Thanks! [link] [comments]
All lights are suddenly turning on instead of just the 2 I want Posted: 19 Jan 2021 11:55 AM PST My routine goes, "I'm in class". What should be happening is only 2 living room lamps should be turning on and the other lights should stay off, and then the 2 that are on should turn red. Either they come on but stay white, or everything comes on and turns red. I'm using Geeni app linked to google home for the lights. What am I doing wrong? The action I put in goes: Living room lamp 2 color red brightness 50%. Living room lamp 3 color red brightness 50%. [link] [comments]
Shelly in old fluorescent lamp Posted: 19 Jan 2021 03:24 PM PST I have cool old fluorescent task lamp that I was hoping to wire with a Shelly. Just wondering if it's even possible with a fluorescent light with ballasts and one of those switches that requires you to hold it to start? My gut instinct is that the inductive load would be prohibitive for a smart relay, but my knowledge on this topic is...limited to say the least. I suppose I could replace all of the electrical with a more modern setup, but I think I'd rather keep it "dumb" than go that route. Wondering if anyone has tried anything like this before. Thanks! Posted: 19 Jan 2021 08:55 AM PST As the title says, I'm planning a new build and I'm running cat6 to each room and thinking of running smart light switches like Brilliant. I'm also running speakers in each room. Has anyone had any experience with smart speakers that can run a doorbell? The plan so far:
Let's brainstorm some cool smart ideas! What would you do? What do you regret? [link] [comments]
Replacing a 3-way switch with a smart switch? Posted: 19 Jan 2021 10:30 AM PST Bit of an odd situation here I think. I have a 3 way switch; one inside the house and one inside the garage. They control the 2 light fixtures on the outside of the garage. I want to replace the switch inside the house with a z-wave smart switch that, rather than controlling the light fixtures, controls some other smart switches in the house (kitchen and dining room lights) so that on the way out of the house, I can just hit it and shut down all the lights. I would then leave the garage light fixture as a 1 way switch with the switch in the garage. Is this kosher to do? [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Jan 2021 10:25 AM PST Anybody have experience with the Fortrezz Mimolite and how to reset the device (ie. get it back to inclusion mode?) Currently my device is giving me a double flash when I press the status button, which indicates that the device is in-network, despite the fact that its not. You should be able to hold the status button while plugging in the Mimolite to do a diagnostics and reset, but this doesn't work for me. Diagnostics seems to pass, but it still ends up with the double-flash in-network status. I've tried contacting Fortrezz tech support since December about this issue but done of my emails or phone calls have been returned. [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Jan 2021 01:07 PM PST I currently have 3 google homes, 6 bulbs, 4 switches and 2 garage door openers and a doorbell on my 60 mbps 2.4gh wifi and everything works great. I plan on adding more devices in time and wondering at what point will it start affecting my wifi? Would it help if I connected my phones and streaming devices to my modem/routers wifi and all my smart home devices to my seperate linksys router or not really? Thanks [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Jan 2021 08:57 AM PST So, posted last week about getting my smart locks set up. I found the Amazon key editions of the kwikset smart locks on sale for $80 for the keypad and $60 for the conversion version, which is still on sale. Still need to find a smart handle for the basement or convert it to a deadbolt, but I'm happy to cover 4 doors for under $300. Have to strengthen the zigbee network to blanket the house, but should be doable. Next step is to get my thermostats on the system. I've got 3 zones in the house, 2 brand new, beautiful central air units and one aged but well maintained oil furnace (that is on the docket to be replaced with propane & cooling, but low on the list). I'm, oh, 60% confident that the oil furnace is wired for 24v. It's got connections for 24v if it isn't already wired for that, so if I had to, I could run a new wiring harness. The best part is that we're in an area with a $100/unit rebate on thermostats. That'll be $300 off of the package. I've been lusting over a nest learning thermostat since before Google bought them out, but with the rebate, I can pick up the current generation of budget nest for $30 each. That may be too affordable for me to pass up compared to $70 for the ecobee3 lite and $150 for the nest learning and the ecobee w/ voice. Is 75% off the cheap nests worth it, or should I try to wait around for a spring sale on the higher end models to see if I can get 3 of those for under $100 total? [link] [comments]
So far...meh. This isn't coming together as easily as I thought it would. Posted: 19 Jan 2021 08:50 AM PST I got some great advice here a few weeks ago that helped me understand the different pieces of hubs, protocols, wireless standards, etc. as I get started on automating my new house. After thoughtful consideration of everyone's feedback, I bought:
I also have a Tradfri bulb I bought before, a 360 S5 robot vac, and a couple of NVidia Shield TVs. My goal was to start setting these things up bit by bit, learn how they interact, and then start adding more smart switches, shutter controls, cameras, etc. So far I have the Hubitat configured and the bulbs paired. It was working as expected with the hubs ("Hey Google turn off the lights in my office"). Then I moved the Hubitat upstairs to the closet where the router, ONT, wifi AP, etc. are. It worked twice and since then the lights don't respond. So I have some questions: One of the bulbs is maybe 2,5M from the Hubitat, directly below it one floor, and doesn't respond reliably. Is this normal for a Zigbee device? I had the idea that it would mesh itself around the entire house no problem. Is it possible they got unpaired or something when I moved the Hubitat? Do I need to add some Zigbee plugs to act as repeaters around the house? If I do can I just plug them in or do they need to be paired to the Hubitat before they repeat? Next question, between Zigbee and Wifi light bulbs, just normal white bulbs, is there a reason to prefer one over the other? And more importantly are there any that don't report all my activity to china over the internet without having to take them apart and hack some other firmware onto them? From what I understand there exists such a thing as a "generic Zigbee bulb", where can I buy one of those? Everything on Amazon seems to require either Hue or Tuya, and I don't understand why if I have a Hubitat and Google Home I need yet another cloud service to turn off and on a light bulb. And last big question, is this all going to be worth it? I'm starting to get the feeling that maybe this whole smart home thing isn't ready for prime time, and it's going to be a case of connecting up a house full of things that only respond sometimes, or in ways that are unexpected. Is my dream of having the house sense when I've left and lower the shutters automatically realistic? Is it possible that I'll be able to say, "Hey Google tell Rosie to sweep the kitchen" and it will happen every time without spurious "I can't reach the Hubitat right now", "The Shield TV appears to be offline", or a row of hourglasses where the light buttons should be, etc.? I know there's a lot of questions in here. Thanks for any help! [link] [comments] |
