Lighting: Help me make the sun rise. Is it doable?

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 07:36 PM PDT

I have what I thought would be a relatively simple goal but am finding is becoming incredibly difficult.

Here's what I'm looking for. We want a sunrise effect in the morning that:

    a) comes on at a specific time

    b) goes from dark to light (brightness shift)

    c) goes from deep red to bright white (color shift)

    d) does the above over a defined period of time (say, 30 minutes).

Is there a smart bulb and/or strip light that can do that?

    What we've tried:

Govee light strip: has a really nice, brightness shift that we can set over time, but no real color shift (there is a bit of a shift, but it's predetermined and not very noticeable) (meets A, B, D)

Wiz bulb: Has a really nice color AND brightness shift, but can't be timed (it says 30 minutes, but seems to be more like 10 minutes, and isn't adjustable) (meets A, B, C)

Before I go buy yet more brands of smart stuff, can anyone confirm if a particular product does the above and meets A, B, C, AND D? I thought maybe 'upgrading' to Hue would do it but have been told that while it has a sunrise mode, it's not a color gradient.

I know Phillips makes their $200 wake-up light which supposedly does this. So I'd be OK with that if that's the only solution, but it seems odd that I have to spend an extra $180 on a lamp that essentially does the same thing any of these smart bulbs should be able to do with the right software/app.

    Smart switch for 3 way

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 03:15 PM PDT

The lights in my stairwell are controlled by a switch both upstairs and down. I really just want to make it so I can turn that light on and off from my phone the easiest way possible. For the regular 2 way switches I used Honeywell light switches it was super easy, they connect right into my vivant. But my understanding is for that setup, even if I only want one of the two switches to be "smart", I still need a different type of switch. Do I just need to buy the Honeywell 3 way and wire one of them that way, or is there something that needs to be done to the other switch as well?

    Rebootable smart plug

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 05:02 PM PDT

I have to randomly reboot my router so I'd like to have it powered by a rebootable smart plug whereby a single command will cycle it off then on. Homekit enabled preferred but will settle for something with a homrdridge plugin. It obviously needs to power cycle back on without connection to wifi…the router will be offline.

LED Strip Lights Sync to Music

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 12:08 AM PDT

I have no idea if this is the right sub for this, but I've been planning to get LED strip lights that I would love to set up to be in sync with my music. I dont know if this is possible, but I want to create light shows with the album's I have. Is it possible to do this and if so how?

Wiz bulb...can 'sunrise' be timed from start to finish? (or is there a better bulb to go with?)

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 01:26 PM PDT

We like the sunrise option of the Wiz bulb but it only seems to last for 10 minutes where it goes from deep red to full bright white in that span.

We'd like to stretch that out longer...30 minutes or an hour. But I don't see any way to do that in the app.

Is there a way to do that?

Or is that just not something this bulb/app can't do?

    Automating Baseboard Heaters

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 12:56 PM PDT

Hi I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight on automating my baseboard heaters.

I'm not sure what the wattage is as I can't seem to see it on the heater anywhere.

I would like to integrate with Home Assistant and am ok with that being the only way to control the temperature.

I'm familiar with tasmota but have not used any Shelly's or other relays.

I am guessing (correct me if I'm wrong) I will need a thermometer in the room reporting to HA which will then control on/off for the heater to maintain the temperature.

Each room has its own heater and switch. I want to automate two or three of them and the rest can stay off.

There is basically nothing for cable and telephone jacks and not able to run my own do to the layout. Sensors will need to be battery powered and relays run on mains (or battery).

I have attached a picture of the dial and the wiring behind.

TLDR: looking for product suggestions and wiring for integrating baseboard heaters with Home Assistant

EDIT: Uploaded images to third party site and added more information.

Anyone tried a package delivery security box for the home?

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 10:50 AM PDT

We've been looking at the Package Butler which allows delivery folks to put the packages in a secure box. Wondering do the drivers actually use them? Plus how many packages can these things hold? We've even seen these type of boxes installed at new construction, from builders like Toll brothers.

Would like to hear from you all on your experiences.

Which Network Module for "YALE NEXTOUCH AUR-NTM-62"

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 01:59 PM PDT

My home has a Yale Mortise lock (YALE NEXTOUCH AUR-NTM-62) installed, and has a slot for a "Network Module" inside it. This slot is empty, but I'm told you can insert a cartridge inside here and gain HomeKit or Z-Wave communication. Does anyone here have an idea (or maybe a link) for a specific product that can complete these connections for me?

    Thanks in advance!

Any good space heater recommendations for a bathroom?

    Homeseer vs other HA setups?

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 04:30 PM PDT

So, I've been doing HA for a while, even as back as far as X10. I've been with Blue Iris, Wink, Smartthings, and currently Hubitat.

Hubitat (using a C7 hub), has by far the worst dashboard and mobile experience. (Yes, yes, ideally the home "runs" itself, but we know that's not always how it works.)

    Biggest gripes from Hubitat are

Having to have Alexa fire routines multiple times before everything works. Example: I tell Alexa to "turn on goodnight", which turns off all the lights, and turns on the bedside lamp. Quite often, a cabinet light will "stick" on, or a similar light won't turn off. A second (or even third) try is needed to get it to work.

Having timers quite often do nothing. I have one that is supposed to turn off a given light after 5 minutes, only to walk by an hour later and it's still on. I tell Alexa to turn it off, and off it goes. Smartthings had zero issues with this. I even have a polling routine running to check statuses on non-Zwave Plus devices. Still stays on.

Hubitat dashboards are an utter shit way to display any information. They're worthless on mobile, and no way in hell am I installing a tablet on the wall just so I can do a simple task. I'm sure it's great if you're in to tinkering endlessly, and have a patient spouse. Mine wants things to "just work".

I had subscribed to Rboys Smartthings apps and device drivers (they're amazing!), but the new app wasn't going to be as friendly with Groovy/IDE. No idea how they're planning on moving forward, but I wish them well.

So.... I'm saying "Eff-it!" and looking at HomeSeer (specifically the Hometroller Plus). I want to be able to easily integrate with Alexa, easy to create routines (WebCore is just more work than I'm after), manage the home remotely, and just overall WORK. I have Jasco/GE switches/outlets, Aeotec sensors, Xiaomi sensors, Osram LED strips, Schlage door lock.

    Thoughts? Opinions?

    Change automation provider

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 10:10 AM PDT

So we had a company providing home automation. So we got just a few lights added with them. The company providing the service decided to shut services and went off grid :( This wouldn't have been a huge problem but we recently had our router changed and now there's no way to control those lights. The app doesn't work now, so that's no longer an option. Is there anything i can do it fix this? Any tutorial or videos? Thank you in advance!

    Reed switch light

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 08:13 AM PDT

Hey guys, I'm not sure if this is the right place for this question. If not please redirect me!

My front door is in a dark hallway with no lights and no power outlets, so I had the idea of installing a battery operated led strip above the door connected to a red switch on the door, so it turns on when it opens.

My question is, is there a way to make this look a bit better? The only thing I can think of is sticking a breadboard above the door with all the bits, is there a better way?

Looking for possible RTSP camera for viewing apiary

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 04:41 PM PDT

I'm trying to find recommendations for a RTSP capable camera to watch my two bee hives from inside my house. The hives are probably 70 feet from my house, so wireless is my preference for ease of setup, also the possibility for being able to power it via solar would be useful as power isn't as readily available at that distance but if I had to figured out a separate solar power solution that could still work.

I'm planning on having the camera in place all year so it needs to be able to survive Michigan's wonderful weather 😆.

The RTSP functionality would be so I could easily add the video feed to my livestreams (seems to be the most direct method of adding the source) from time to time cause I think that would be a neat feature to give viewers.

There are a number of trees that obstruct my view of the hives from the house so the camera would need to be placed by them, plus the hives face the same direction that my windows do (bee sure do love that early south-eastern sun) so I wouldn't be able to see the enterence activity from here anyway.

I'm trying to keep this project low cost-ish to save my wallet but I'm not sure what low cost would mean in this case.

I'm willing to take suggestions on other ways to accomplish the act of viewing my hives and adding that feed to my livestreams, and since I'm fairly technically savvy, don't be afraid to spitball some interesting ideas if it means saving some money.

Alexa, Vivant, and Honeywell T6 Pro WiFi

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 06:47 AM PDT

Hello all I'm somewhat new to home automation as I just bought my home. I am sure people have preferences on hubs and all that, but I liked Vivant the last time I used them, so I went back to them. Right now I have, all connected thru Vivant and Echo Dots (just in case it's relevant):

Viivant panel, Vivant pro cameras, Vivant doorbell, Vivant hard drive, Honeywell T6 Pro wifi thermostats (one for each HVAC, one upstairs and one down), one z wave light switch (adding more later), glass break sensors, fire alarm sensors, blah blah.

Everything works great together with the exception of one thing: I cannot get Alexa to change the thermostat from Cool to Heat or vice versa. Changing temp, reading temp, all of that is no issue.

I don't even have the Honeywell home app set up with the thermostats...so I thought maybe I should do that instead and that particular command alexa sends through that app, but I followed the T6 instructions to hold the temperature for five seconds until it starts changing something or other, but it simply doesn't do that when I hold for five seconds, and the app doesn't have an option for "the step you told me to do is not doing what it says"

So either, am I missing the right Alexa command? Or someone know how to get the thermostat to pair with the honeywell app?

    Best Power meter?

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 05:44 AM PDT

I need your help. I have a small woodworking shop and I need to measure the power consumption, including peak power, I wont be using more than a single tool (the biggest one uses a 1200w induction motor), a 1000w vacuum cleaner and the lights at the same time. I was planning on using a sonoff, but there have been a few cases where they burnt up using less power than the nominal 2300 watt that I might be using. my power source is 220v 50hz

Shell1 No Permanent Live - UK

    Hello,

I think I already know the answer to this, but in my ceiling rose in a 5 year old house, I don't seem to have a permanent live. I have incoming live and neutral from the switch only. Can I use a shelly1 or alternative shelly product in this situation?

    Thanks
