Turn android phone with ir blaster into smart device Posted: 15 Mar 2021 09:54 PM PDT Hey All, I have an old android phone that I would like to serve as a smart device to turn on my AC using the ir blaster. Is there an app or some kind if DIY thing that I could make this happen? [link] [comments]
TPLink Kasa bulbs won't turn off (Alexa) Posted: 15 Mar 2021 05:02 PM PDT I've been using a set of Kasa bulbs with Alexa for a while now, and whilst there have been a few hiccups following power interruptions or network outages, they have been generally reliable. This evening, however, none of the TPLink bulbs will turn off or respond to changes via Alexa (either via voice command or in the Alexa app). They will only turn on. I can turn them on via Alexa no problem, and then if I ask her to turn them off again she plays the success tone, but the bulb remains on. If I go into the Kasa app, I have no problems turning the bulbs on or off from there. Weirdly, if I turn on the bulbs with Alexa, and then adjust anything from the Kasa app (e.g. brightness or colour), then ask Alexa to turn them off, that works fine. But the next time they are turned on they get "stuck" on again. I'm guessing the problem is on TPLinks's side of the integration. Is anyone else seeing this? Every one of my TPLink bulbs are affected. [link] [comments]

Posted: 15 Mar 2021 05:53 PM PDT I own this product https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DVUDB4C with 3 very bright special bulbs . The bulbs are non-smart ones. Has anyone of you guys used z-wave bulb socket adopters? Due to the special nature of my bulbs, I can't replace them with smart ones, so a bulb socket adopter is the only option. Putting it on a switch is my last resort. [link] [comments]
Telegram and Smarthings integration question Posted: 15 Mar 2021 07:08 PM PDT I'm looking for Telegram and Smarthings integration. If I have a message, I want color of a Hue bulb change. Has anyone done anything similar using Telegram API and ST? [link] [comments]
New House: Time for all new shi.......stuff. Have questions. Posted: 15 Mar 2021 12:06 PM PDT So, I have bought a new house, and I want to add a few things, from a tech point of view, and looking for suggestions. First and foremost: This stuff needs to work together. Under no circumstances am I looking for complications, as my spouse and kids will be running the show, and I want it to be DEAD simple. I'm not looking for many things tto start with, so hopefully that helps. Current house: AlexaEcho's all over (we treat them almost like intercoms), Nest Thermostat, Wi-Fi lights everywhere, and a lone google puck deal (Not wi-fi router, just a puck). And other shit, with lots of wi-fi devices, all feeding through an EERO system. New Home: Aint got nothing. Desires: I will be moving the EERO network, but that is about it. Need: Thermostat. I currently have Nest, and it is pretty simple. New house has hot water heat radiators though, so need to accommodate for that. Need: Hub. We currently have an Echo 8 as our hub. I like this. But that Nest Hub Max sure is purty. I'm wondering if it will be friends with me? So, I am leary of the Google Max. I JUST want a hub that tells status of home, the weather, plays music, etc. What I don't want is some hub that shows all my data, calendar, appts, emails, etc etc etc. I don't need that, I don't want that. If Google Hub has options not to show or complicate things with MY data, when this is a FAMILY hub, than I may switch. Otherwise, we will stick with Echo. Need: Doorbell. This is new to me. We currently live in the country, and RARELY even bother locking the door at night or..... well ever. But in the city is a different beast, and we are moving there. Ring seems nice. But I hear WYZE makes one, and we already have wyze bands and scale, and they work quite well. So open to options here. Need: Alarm? Okay, so thinking like downstairs windows/doors could use those. But I don't want to sign up with a service, just add-on devices that feed into the system. Honestly, don't even know if this one is possible. Need: Lights. Right now, we have just about every fixture with a RGB-W smart bulb. But, they are from different manufactures. Some good, some no-name. They all work okay, I would just like to start with new ones that aren't ridiculously expensive. Last ones I bought were a 4 pack for around $25. Probably gonna need at least a dozen regular, and various other styles. Anyone have a manufacturer that does an entire line of styles? Need: I don't know. Let's just say I have an extra $100 to spend on automation (that must feed into the hub), and i'm not sure where to go. Shoot some FUN ideas. [link] [comments]
Is there a RGB LED Strip Controller that is designed to fit in standard decora trim? Posted: 15 Mar 2021 11:26 PM PDT I want to install strip lights whose controls are on the wall and located at the room entrance like a standard light switch. I currently have a z-wave dimmer switch for the main recessed lighting, but want to add LED strip for accent lighting. I like having the option to control via phone, but sometimes it's quicker just to get up to hit the switch. Also helps when non-tech-savvy visitors are over. My idea is expand the current 1 gang to a 2 gang box, and find a controller panel to fit the 2nd position. Does that exist? I am using SmartThings hub, and have primarily z-wave devices, if that makes a difference. [link] [comments]
Help a beginner who was told I have to give up my hue bulbs... Posted: 15 Mar 2021 12:07 PM PDT Hi everyone, I am having some insulation issues in my house and the contractor wants to replace my recessed fixtures with LED inserts (retrofit fixtures that take the place of my existing bulbs without the recessed fixtures). In some places around the house, there is no access to attic so there is no other way to seal the fixtures. I know many people here preach to replace the light switches, not bulbs, so I am hoping for some guidance. What is the best smart light switch out there? Can any of them be controlled within the hue app (I don't have to give up all my hue bulbs, just some, so great remains a central app for me? Alternatively, I have been thinking of ditching Smart Things and buying a Home Assistant Blue, so are any of them better with ST or HA? Thanks for your help. I would normally be spending my time and not just asking for answers, but I am super busy at work and the contractor needs me to make a decision very soon. [link] [comments]
Looking for a user friendly IoT software. BLE-mqtt gateway/broker Posted: 15 Mar 2021 09:10 AM PDT Windows *preferably* software that acts as a bluetooth to mqtt gateway/broker to connect to a wireless IoT device that sends out a BLE mqtt beacon. New at this. [link] [comments]
My GE 12727 Z-Wave Smart Toggle Switch started clicking like a metronome and died after 5 years Posted: 15 Mar 2021 10:17 PM PDT I bought a bunch of GE z-wave switches in 2016 and now 2 of the 7 have died. Most recently I was (ironically?) installing another smart switch and when I turned the breaker on the old one was clicking and unresponsive. I thought the new one was interfering but nope, when I took it back out the metronome continued. Alas. I guess smartness comes with lower reliability sometimes. Just something to think about. Still loving the hobby. Video here of the clicking. [link] [comments]
Honeywell T5 smart thermostat temperature delta question. Posted: 15 Mar 2021 06:07 PM PDT Is there a way to change the temperature delta before the system kicks on again. For example I have it set to 72 degrees and as soon as it drops to 71 or 70 the heat will kick back on again. Seems to happen too often. I know my house insulation is bad so I don't want the HVAC to turn off then back on within minutes. Can I set it to have a delta of 5 degrees before it kicks back on again? I read holding the menu down for 5 seconds gets you into the "advanced menu" but i can't figure out if there's such a setting in there. [link] [comments]
Zigbee hub with external control Posted: 15 Mar 2021 10:34 AM PDT What is the best Zigbee hub that supports zigbee 3.0 and the ability to have two way communication from an external device over IP, like a third party external control system? [link] [comments]
Smart switch able to control smart outlet? Posted: 15 Mar 2021 08:30 AM PDT I have recessed lighting in my kitchen and am installing plug-in under cabinet LED lights with a smart outlet. I would like my wall switch to turn both of these on/off together by default, but I would also like functionality on the wall switch to only turn on the LEDs (via the smart outlet). Is there any switch that can do this? TL;DR: Is there any smart switch that has a way to control only a smart outlet with a separate button on the switch, clicking combination, etc? Posted: 15 Mar 2021 01:13 PM PDT Hi all, I'm getting 1 of these fans installed soon and they are installing it with the Wireless RF controller (https://quietcoolsystems.com/accessories/controls/). Making a standard door release button smart Posted: 15 Mar 2021 07:03 AM PDT Hello, I'm quite new to home automation so been struggling to answer this. I currently have a traditional door release system much like this. A release button wired to a 12v power supply triggers a time relay that activates a magnet and releases the door latch for a few seconds. I'd like to be able to release the door from my phone as well as the button, but without replacing the existing system (I can't replace it easily due to limitations with my front door / building). I've got a couple of TUYA zigbee devices and a hub already. I was hoping to either find a smart switch, or something I can add inline between the switch and timer that could trigger it, either TUYA or similar. The issue I'm having is all switches I can find are 'switches' not 'buttons'. Ie: they are on or off, not that they just trigger something when pressed like the release button I have currently. Adding a retrofit smart lock isn't an option as I can't modify the door, only the button / wires internally. Thanks [link] [comments]

Suggestion microcontroller with ethernet Posted: 15 Mar 2021 07:26 AM PDT I am looking for a small controller like an esp8266 to control a relay on my driveway gate. I need to control it via LAN- probably with using homeassistant. If i could also add a reed switch or another similar to detect if the gate is open or not that would be a plus - would probably report this via mqtt. I have ethernet there, but no wifi. Anyone know of a controller that would be reliable? I considered using an old RPi but I've went through a few SD cards and would like something more reliable. edit: thanks everyone- was not aware of ethernet capable ESP32. That is perfect!! Posted: 15 Mar 2021 11:51 AM PDT Can anyone recommend any tools for planning a setup? Essentially I'm buying a house and I want to visually plan where I'm putting things like speakers, screens, furniture, server rack but also where cable runs and power sockets will be. Thanks in advance [link] [comments]
Devices on smart switches will not turn on Posted: 15 Mar 2021 06:42 AM PDT I have two devices on smart plugs (Amazon smart plug and kasa KP400) that will turn off, but will not turn on. One is a small white noise machine and the other is a switch/transformer for low voltage deck lights. I've tested the plugs with other devices that work properly -- the devices turn off and on. I've also tested the white noise machine on another smart plug and it would not turn on either. So now the plugs have power, but I need to physically push the power buttons on the devices to turn them on (which defeats the point of smart plugs). I've never experienced this before, any advice? Simple Light Switches & Central Heating Posted: 15 Mar 2021 05:05 AM PDT Can anyone recommend some simple on/off light switches that will work with Alexa. I've just moved into my first home and want the ability to control the central heating & lights plus a couple of Alexa smartplugs. Thank you in advance! [link] [comments]
Anyone have experience with Roost smart batteries for smoke detectors? Posted: 15 Mar 2021 01:25 PM PDT I have a 3D printer and I'm planning to put a smoke detector in the enclosure. I want to be able to get a notification if the detector goes off when I'm away (besides just the noise). Wirecutter recommends the Roost smart battery as it's "budget pick", which will cost me about $40 (USD) including shipping. It goes inside a dumb smart detector (which I already own) and can't be recharged. They say it lasts 3-5 years, other reviews say it lasts only 9 months. Anyone have any recommendations for what I could get instead to put inside this printer enclosure? Even a cheap noise sensor that sends me a notification when my dumb smoke detector goes off would be good. I would love it to work with SmartThings and/or Google Home. [link] [comments] |
