    LED Light Strip Recommendations

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 04:15 PM PDT

    Hey all,

I'm looking to put a LED light strip on the section where the wall meets the ceiling, but only on one wall. The wall is short of 3 meters long. Some of the most important things for me is that the light strip should have good cool & warm whites. I don't care much for how good the RGB colours are. I also wish for the light strip to be controlled with the Phillips Hue app as this is my primary driver setting up light automation (outside of the Google Assistant commands). Finally, the LED strip needs to be able to fit in one of those LED strip corner profiles like these.

Now, I did mention Phillips Hue but their prices are just crazy. I have tried to do some searching but am not sure what would be best in my case. The Yeelight seems like a firm competitor, but I have read it does not emit true white (not sure how true this is). I also have some Innr lights in my home, and the Innr led strip seem to be priced well.

Any other suggestions I should be on the lookout for?

Smart lock for infrequently used house

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 03:55 PM PDT

I'm interested in putting a smart lock on a vacation house that I only visit approximately twice a year. Would that length of time just be pushing it too much on battery life? I'm likely to be the only one motivated enough to keep the batteries fresh, so there really isn't any point if I can't reasonably expect 6-8 months.

The use would obviously be very light compared to the ~10 cycles per day per manufacturer's assumptions, but there's still the length of time factor. It seems that some people find smart locks to really chew through batteries, but most posts I've found see frequent use - not ones that go unattended for long periods of time.

    Details if interested:

    1. The house is probably used a total of 6 times a year including friends and family, each visit being between a long weekend and a week.
    2. I'm not committed to any one product, but the Kwikset Premis has piqued my interest since I like the triple redundancy of the app for regular friends/family, code for less frequent users/if someone is coming in to do work, and then key as last resort. Also the current keyway there is Kwikset so I could quickly key it to match the other locks on the back/side doors.

    Automated Commercial Muting

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 09:03 AM PDT

Has anyone been able to automate a commercial muting system? I'm wondering who has found a raspberry pi type opensource software solution that listens to the room for a flux in volume or identifies specific commercial samples to automate muting the TV (via IR blaster) or even the Google Home / Alexa. At present, I can issue a command to Google Home to mute the TV for a default 2-4 minutes, but it seems entirely too easy for software to automate this process. AI could surely differentiate commercials from routine programming. Point me in the right direction!

    Tv lights sync

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 05:11 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I have a 75Inch samsung Oled TV which I am enjoying a lot.

Recently I have seen a lot of videos where people displayed there movies (Star wars) with added lights to their tv's which match the seen and WOW do I miss something on my tv haha.

I had a look and I can see most of them use Philips Hue, which in terms of price is okay with me. But 99% of the time I use the build in apps of my tv, such as netflix and disney +.

And Philips only works with HDMi connected devices which I dont use apart from a old ps4 which does not display hdr or 4K so no option.

Is there a good work around in this or maybe a alternative to Philips hue? That can match the quality?

I would love to hear from you guys!

How to monitor self-test cycle of standby generator

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 06:46 PM PDT

Please help me brainstorm... I have a second home that has a Generac 004916 standby generator. I'd like to monitor the weekly self-test cycle so that we can place a service call if it misses a run or cuts one short. I'm struggling how to detect if it's running; the only direct output available that would indicate it's running is a non-weatherproof convenience outlet that is only energized when it's running. Indirect methods I can think of would be to measure exhaust temperature, sound level, or possibly an induction trigger off of the engine's spark plug wire.
Since this is a mission-critical system, I'd prefer to avoid direct connecting to internal circuits.,
One I can detect if it's running, I can use an ESP8266 or -32 to to send messages to OpenHab and trigger the necessary alert rules.

I need help backlighting my TV

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 02:31 PM PDT

Hi Home Automation Redditers! Idk if this is the right place to post this or if you have threads dedicated for things like this, but I am the opposite of a tech wizard and need some help. I want to backlight my tv with responsive lights but want to know all the pieces/cords/compatibilities before I commit to it.

I have a 65" Sony x900h as my tv. I was looking at the Hue Play starter kit (2 lights and a bridge). Are these the best lights to do something like this?

From the extent of my research I believe I also need a Philips Hue Sync Box to make it respond to the content on my TV. Is this correct? I saw ones for $200 and $300, what is the difference between them? Do I control them from my phone? And then if the HDMI goes from my cable box to this box, do I still use my TV remote?

Sorry again is this isn't where I should post this and any answers help! Thanks a ton!!!

KlikAanKlikUit to control a led lamp is always slightly on

Hello, I have a klikaanklikuit receiver behind a switch, and for some reason the LED Lamp is currently always slightly ON.
If I try turning it on, it turns ON for a second, and then back to this "slightly on" state, while the receiver blinks red.
    This is the receiver: https://klikaanklikuit.nl/product/mini-inbouwschakelaar-voor-stopcontact/
    This is the lamp: https://www.amazon.nl/gp/product/B0838ZKB1R/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    Can someone help me? Thanks!

Recommendation for no neutral wire z-wave switch? (re: Fibaro Dimmer 2)

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 04:50 PM PDT

I'm using mostly Zooz Z-Wave switches in my house but I have one light fixture (ceiling light above kitchen table) that is powered at the fixture and no neutral is available in the switch box.

Zooz recommends the Fibaro Dimmer 2 so I'm thinking about purchasing it.

Does anybody have any experience with it?

I'd install it in the ceiling box above the fixture where the neutral is available so it will work with the LED bulbs.

My main concern is how quickly the physical switch will activate the light. Does it switch on/off instantly?

Can I install a traditional dimmer with the Fibaro Dimmer 2 to dim the light? (I'm assuming that's the purpose of the Fibaro but I'm installing it at the ceiling fixture and NOT at the light switch)

Unlockable door handles with smart lock

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 11:46 AM PDT

I'm preparing to install a keyed/wifi enabled smartlock on two exterior doors. I could keep the second (keyed) door handle that we already have, but has anyone thought about changing that doorknob to a keyless (passage) door handle?

It seems to me that if the purpose of the smart lock is to make it lockable/unlockable automatically, then removing that second, not-smart lock, could reduce probability of error. Any thoughts or suggestions about this? Our existing setup is combination (handle and deadbolt), not all-in-one.

How can I automate a regular light, is there some kind of module I can install behind the switch?

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 10:19 PM PDT

This question probably has been asked many times but I can't find the answer I'm looking for... All the bulbs in my condo are Hue bulbs and I'm using Hue switches and motion sensors to automate the whole thing. The only one I can't automate is my bathroom light which is a custom fixture with a weirdly shaped halogen bulb.

I'm wondering if there's any module I could install behind the switch to automate it paired with a motion sensor. It would be great if there's something that works with Philips Hue but I'm afraid there's not.

I'm also using SmartThings if you guys know of a compatible module that works with it, that'd be great...

    Thanks in advance!

    Water leak sensors for SmartThings

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 03:53 PM PDT

I have seen the Aeotec and Samsung water leak detectors as options, but looks like they aren't available (at least not at ridiculous prices).

Anyone have any recommendations for a water leak detector that will work with SmartThings?

how to cast a skill to a specific google home speaker ?

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 09:39 AM PDT

Currently I'm using google assistant's built in white noise feature to play ambient sounds through my google home speakers but I find it (minorly) inconvenient that I have to query both my speakers individually every 12 hours to continue playing noise. Google Assistant seems to lack any innate ability to broadcast white noise to specific speakers so I'm wondering if there is any way to broadcast a google assistant white noise skill/app to play white noise on specific google homes, preferably through the assistant on my phone so I can type rather than speak, and so the Google assistant doesn't blare the skill activation process through my speakers? So far I've had no success with any of such. I also have a speaker group set up so if playing white noise in stereo happens to be possible that would be cool.

Furnace thermo and fireplace thermo upgrade

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 08:55 AM PDT

I'm looking to upgrade our home thermostats. I've used ecobee in our previous house which worked ok, it did everything we needed it to.

We moved about a year ago and back to having programmable thermostats, but not smart. And we're in a two story with two zones and two gas fireplaces now. The gas fireplaces have programmable thermostats but are still relatively basic in that their two wire to the relay.

Is there any sense or benefit in trying to tie the two systems together?

I do have HomeAssistant running a good portion of my lights and scenes. The consensus seems to be install Shelly component but I've still got wife and kids to appease so I don't think I can skip the wall thermostat for the fireplace.

    Any suggestions?

    Smart Vacuum - Australia

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 06:15 AM PDT

    Hi Everyone!

I am finally thinking of buying a smart robot vacuum cleaner.
There is quite limited selection in Australia.
I have my eyes on Xiaomi, as their robots are really well priced (about AUD $400), and narrowed it down to this one: https://www.mi-store.com.au/xiaomi-viomi-v2-pro-robot-vacuum-cleaner as well as this one https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/xiaomi-mi-robot-vacuum-cleaner/

However I am still confused about the differences in them. And I understand that there are plenty of other options too. I have a 1 bedroom apartment, and it is wood floor in the living room, and carpet in the bedroom. I don't really need a mopping function. It's a rental apartment, so ideally I don't want the robot banging off the walls and causing damage.

Can anyone suggest which Vacuum would be the best in this scenario? Doesn't have to be the two listed above.

    Many thanks!

Adding HDMI CEC functionality to old soundbar

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 01:24 PM PDT

    Hello guys,

I have an old soundbar (Yamaha YSP-1100) and i really love it, but i hate to use two remotes. I'd like to use tv's remote to control volume of the soundbar and only way i see it can be done is via HDMI CEC.

Is there a way i can use remote of my new TV to control volume (only the volume, nothing else) of the soundbar? Is there an device that help me do this, or some hack to accomplish the same?

    Thanks!

    Recommendation for Home Alarm Package

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 07:19 PM PDT

    Hello r/homeautomation

I am looking for a recommendation for an easy, idiot proof security system installation and other equipment with the following goals:

    • Alert me with a loud siren or alarm if someone is entering my home at night or I suppose if my three year old is crawling out of a window or opening a door to walk outside when they shouldn't be - I don't want to find out someone is inside with them standing over me. (I've read about door/window sensors - I assume I'd need those)
    • Appropriate for a suburban neighborhood but effective external lighting to deter as much as possible anyone who is coming near my home at night.
    • Remote self-monitoring
    • Alarm that will function inside of the home without internet.
    • Would prefer something that uses my phone as a location device to allow me inside/disengage the alarm but has the ability to use a keypad or other method if/when needed.

    Bonuses:

    • Can integrate a doorbell cam of some sort, other cameras and/or smart locks.

    Home Features to be considered:

    • 11 accessible windows
    • 3 accessible doors including a sliding glass door
    • My house is a rectangle, two sides of ~20 meters and another two sides of ~8 meters (in case this is important for exterior lighting)

Other suggestions welcome though I don't think I need cameras frankly as I would recover any material loss due to burglary with insurance and move on with my life but not opposed if the price is right and the install isn't horrible.

Based on some reading I've done the best option I've seen so far as a brand for the alarm is Abode but I am open to any and all options that will meet my needs with the best bang for buck.

I'm sure I've missed or forgotten something and I know there is a lot of stuff above and maybe it won't vibe well together but thanks ahead of time for considering.

    Shelly 1L stops functioning

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 07:45 AM PDT

Shelly 1L - Using successfully in multiple lighting locations.

It is using the no-neutral configuration. Light is LED 24w non-dimmable. Bypass is added. Using Mongoose firmware for HomeKit. Works for a while, then complete not functional. No IP address, switch does not work either. Replaced Shelly, same problem. Worked great for a week, now not functional. Using the exact same setup for another light, works flawlessly.

    Any ideas?

Chamberlain MyQ Garage door opener issue

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 07:06 AM PDT

Has anyone had any experience with the Chamberlain MyQ Garage door opener? I purchased one fall of last year and it was working fine. Over the last week or two I can't get the garage door to close. Whether it's by voice command with Google or on the MyQ app, the trigger light activates but the door doesn't close.

Just wondering if anyone else is having issues? What garage door do you recommend?

    NFC home automation help

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 12:57 PM PDT

Posted on the NFC sub as well and thought I would post here :) Recently bought some NFC tags and after hours of watching videos I still find myself struggling...

I have an Android and I was wondering how to incorporate my smart lights with the NFC. More specifically, when I tap the NFC tag it should not only turn on my lights but also change the color. I plan to put the NFC tags on artwork, that way I can match the environment to the colors on the art!

Any help is appreciated, the apps I'm using for my smart lights are -Smart Life -Magic Home -Nanoleafs
