What Are Some Useful Zigbee Repeaters?

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 10:52 AM PDT

    Hi All

I've got a bit of a weird problem

So recently I changed to using Home Assistant. It's been pretty great! Except that in the process, I moved all my battery powered sensors and wall switches (also battery powered) to their own Zigbee network instead of using Hue's or SmartThings' networks

And it turns out that none of these battery powered devices act as repeaters, so the ones far from the hub aren't super reliable. And IIUC only outlet-powered devices work as repeaters

So I've already got a lot (more than I need) of Z-Wave outlets. So don't need more of those. And I have enough lights (which I want to leave all on the Hue Zigbee network). So what other devices could I get to work as a Zigbee repeater?

    Thanks!

New build, should I install cat6 or cat6a?

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 05:11 AM PDT

I can get a 300m box of cat6 for about $150 or a box of cat6a for $300. I'll be installing it myself so all other costs stay the same. I want to be able to use these runs for anything in the future. Data, poe, dry contacts etc.

New to home automation looking for recommendations

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 12:58 AM PDT

As the title says I am new to the concept of automating stuff in my house.

I am fairly tech savvy and familiar with some basic programming, just not sure where to start to accomplish my current desires (which will surely grow).

At this time, I'd like start utilizing smart bulbs, timers, and motion sensors.

The main goal is to have living room lights turn on and off at certain times, and also change in brightness / color at certain times.

In hallways I would like to implement motion sensors for night time lighting, but also stick to the same kind of schedule of on and off times and brightness + color.

What reasonably priced products should I invest in to not only accomplish these things, but also be able to tie in with other items later?

I've done some research and am aware of some technologies often utilized, but I'm not really sure where to start. Although I imagine I should, do I need to invest in a hub for these goals? Updating fixtures or sockets or switches?

I'm all ears, and although my budget is fairly "open", I would prefer to do all of this at a conservative price. I currently rent so options that do not require too many holes or electrical work would be preferred, though a screw here or there or swapping an outlet/socket isn't much of an issue.

    Touchpad and Switchbot

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 09:19 PM PDT

    Hello,

Does anyone know if Switchbot works with a touchpad or tap style power button? Specifically the Honeywell HPA100/200/300 (Hepa filters). For clarification, the power button does not click or physically move in any way. You tap it like you tap a smart phone screen. I was unable to find the answer to this question in other posts.

    Thank you!

Physical button to trigger a GH automation/routine?

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 12:08 PM PDT

I couldn't find anything out there but thought I'd throw the question up and see if anyone had some homegrown solution or something.

Basically I'm looking for some kind of physical device that can issue a command to the google assistant. I have a samsung ST hub for our z-wave stuff, and a samsung button did make some stuff possible but they broke their logitech harmony integration and trying to manage it through the google home seems impossible.

IFTTT made one really awkward workaround kind of work but if something gets out of sync I have to manually reset some stuff and fix it.

I would love a physical button or switch that could just issue a command to my google assistant "run the bedtime routine" or something along those lines.

Fortunately my wife and I both have pixels and the power controls in android 11 have made this MUCH less of a needed feature but it would still be nice to have something tactile that's in a fixed location.

IP Smart Camera - Baby Monitoring

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 04:21 AM PDT

    Hey everyone

I'm looking for a solid baby camera that will alerts on our mobile phones via motion and sound. A lot of the marketed baby cameras seem way overpriced, and based on my research, these two seem highly recommend:

    Reolink E1 Pro

    Wyze Cam Pan

If I can repurpose the camera, I don't see why not? Does anyone have any other recommendations other than the two above?

    Thanks!

Troubleshooting Yale Assure SL zwave setup (YRD216-ZW2-OBP)

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 07:14 PM PDT

I'm stumped. Lock installed great, master pin created, added some user pins, then went to join it to my SmartThings hub. I did what the instructions (bottom of that page) and the BILT app suggest:

    • master pin, gear
    • 7, gear [network menu]
    • 1, gear [join mode]

I thought it worked the first time, but eventually timed out (series of chimes, keypad lights turned off). I didn't get SmartThings searching in time, so I went to do this again. Now I had SmartThings on the ready, went to repeat the above, and got a red light on the outer Yale symbol after the 7-gear combination. I can't seem to enter that menu. [note: I may never have entered it and mis-remember the first time]

I thought it maybe this meant it was already set to be available (but would expect the 3-gear menu option to be available, yet no keys are accepted after it turns red), but it does not show up in nearby device search or by specific model in SmartThings.

I can't find this issue anywhere, or what a red light means after trying to enter the network menu (7-gear). I find issues with not connecting, unreliable connection, but not being unable to get into the menu at all. I just went through two iterations of resets with the same behavior:

    • pull batteries, pull zwave, remove escutcheon, hold button, insert batteries, set pin, remove batteries, insert zwave module, insert batteries, then master pin-gear, 7-gear -> red light
    • this procedure (which differs from the above in setting the pin after the zwave module is installed)

I got this from Amazon and my green zwave module had what looked like a label partially ripped off. There is a chip inside (I checked), but that was quite conspicuous to me. Pics here of both sides.

Has anyone been unable to complete the final 1-gear entry to get it into join mode, and gotten a red light instead after 7-gear?

ESP-like board for DIY Zigbee projects?

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 11:21 AM PDT

Is there anything on the market for Zigbee that is similar to the what the ESP8266 is for WiFi?

I want to do some roll-your-own LED lighting. I know that there are good ready to go Zigbee LED controllers available, but I like an excuse to warm up the soldering iron and 3d printer.

Who's Using a Dimmer on Their Outdoor LED String Lights?

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 06:21 PM PDT

I bought some of these outdoor LED string lights. They're hung, look great, very happy... EXCEPT that they don't dim, at least not with my Lutron RA2 Tabletop Lamp Dimmer. They just do a weird flickering thing and then eventually go back to 100% brightness.

I'm a Home Assistant enthusiast and can fairly easily incorporate another type of dimmer, but I'm looking for ideas. Anyone using lights light this and have a recommendation?

    Many thanks.

    String/"bistro" lights?

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 01:48 PM PDT

I'm looking to get some string lights for my back porch. Not Christmas lights, but something to provide some light outside. Something like this is a non-smart version.

I could go with a z-wave outdoor plug, but I would love to be able to adjust brightness and color temperature. I've found a couple options that work with their own app on WiFi or Bluetooth but I really want something that integrates with Home Assistant. Is anyone aware of an option?

Edit: or, I suppose, an outdoor dimmer plug that works with Home Assistant.

    Alexa keeps turning on TV

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 05:33 PM PDT

I have Home Assistant with Alexa integration. I also have a Samsung smart tv with a Sonos play bar. The Sonos are integrated directly with Alexa. When saying Alexa, Sonos play bars listen and respond. If I ask Alexa to "turn on Family Room lights" where "Family Room" is an Alexa group, the TV always turns on also. Any ideas why? How do I disable this? I don't have any Alexa to TV integrations.... I assume it must happen via hdmi from Sonos somehow?

    Best/Strongest robot vacuum?

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 11:21 AM PDT

I've had one of the cheapest robot vacuums I could find at the time since 2017 and looking to finally upgrade mine now they I live in a multi-level home that's mostly carpeted. Looking for a robot vacuum that can pick up my pomeranian's fur and frequently visiting Akita's fur with a good suction as I notice mine still leaves a lot of dust and stuff when I vacuum manually. Really excited to finally upgrade since my allergies are pretty bad!! Self emptying feature is a plus but not necessary. A little hesitant on paying more than ~$600 but open to you convincing me otherwise! The owner of the Akita swears by his Samsung robot vacuum for how strong the suction is but I'm big on looking at reviews and am wondering why it's never mentioned among the top vacuums even though it seems pretty powerful.

    Thanks in advance!!!

    Make Ceiling Speakers Smart

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 02:11 AM PDT

I have some Speakers installed in the ceiling that I like to be added to Google Home and/or HomeKit Via Casting & AirPlay. They are currently connected to an AMP that has a A & B Zone. 1 Stereo Pair & 2 Mono. I do have a crappy Amazon Bluetooth box thing that constantly disconnects.

Any ideas would be great. the cheaper the better (as along as it works) I'd love to have them show as 3 different speakers as they are in different rooms of course with the 1 stereo & 2 Mono.

P.S. I have a hoobs box so if something can be added via Home bridge somewhat simply that be great.

Does Zigbee use MAC IDs/ports/protocols/etc. that can be blocked by a home router?

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 11:30 AM PDT

I'm looking at a Tradfri setup for my back porch. No gateway, just the remote and two outlets. I'd like to see if there's a way to block the Tradfri devices, which use Zigbee, from connecting to my home network.

Do Zigbee devices have MAC addresses, ports, protocols, etc. that can be blocked by a home network? I don't have anything super fancy, and I have other security measures to stop casual wardrivers and whatnot. I won't be connecting them to any apps or services, just the remote and the outlets to switch lights off and on, so I'm OK with setting up the pairing and then blocking once they're set up.

New subreddit for SEQUEmatic (platform for creating automate sequences)

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 07:32 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

As the tittle says a new subreddit is now up for all things related to SEQUEmatic. The people behind the platform are also involved on the subreddit, so feel free to ask questions or make suggestions.

SEQUEmatic its a platform that help you create complex sequences to automate the various smart gadgets in your home. At the moment SEQUEmatic supports TUYA/SmartLife account, eWelink, Phillips Hue, Google Assistant and IFTTT webhooks. Its an easy platform to work with, so people with no programming background can enjoy its simple use, but also supports fairly complex sequences. Where you can save values to variable, trigger sequences from variable inputs, trigger sequences by weather conditions, etc. The platform is also free to use, supported by donations from users (starting from 4USD).

Hope to see you guys there!
