    Nest or Ecobee Thermostat

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 08:45 PM PDT

Just moved into a new house. They have a Honeywell thermostat with wifi which is a pain in the ass , can't really get it to work with wifi. Thinking of getting a nest or ecobee , which one is better? I would probably buy either one at Costco and the ecobee is $20 off now at Costco. I there a big difference between them?

    HomeSeer Door Sensor

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 06:28 PM PDT

Hello, I am new to homeseer and HA as a whole.
I just bought a HS-DS100+ and was able to add the device and its now shows on my device page. But I can not figure out how to get its status of open or closed. Can someone point me to a guide on what else is required to get this working. Let me know if you need me to provide any more info.
Here is what it looks like on my device page.

    Do we still like Zwave?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 11:00 AM PDT

I have a bunch of zwave switches, and sensors, running on a Smartthings hub (I might switch to HA if I I can figure it out and have the energy).

It seems like, though, that Zwave is getting harder and harder to find. Do the people in the know think it'll still be a good platform to continue on? It seems much easier to find wifi devices. I'm not super-enthusiastic putting dozens of devices on my wifi network, especially when everything seems to require its own app to integrate.

I also have a bunch of Alexa devices, which seem to prefer Zigbee.

Do zigbee hardwired switches with scene control exist?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 02:41 PM PDT

I am looking for an in wall, hardwired switch that can send zigbee signals to lamps controlled by zigbee plugin dimmer modules, but all of the ones I have seen so far just control the physical load wire only. Only Z-wave switches seem to have that feature.

Or is it possible to have a hub monitor when the hardwired switch is toggled and then it sends a signal to the plugin modules? If that works then what hubs would support that?

    ADT Smartthings discontinued - question

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 02:29 PM PDT

I own a small Senior Assisted Living center and only use the ADT system for announcing when a door opens, such as "Rear Hallway Door open". Since they've discontinued this line it looks like I'm going to need something to replace this system.

    Any ideas for something similar?

Monitoring software for multiple baby cams?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 02:25 PM PDT

I'm looking for some, ideally opensource, software suggestions.

I want to show three baby monitors at once on an android phone and/or iPad. I'd like to keep the video feeds entirely inside our wifi network. Does anyone know any good opensource software that can do this? I'm guessing there must be some security software that can do this with a cheap ip cam?

Bonus points if it lets us remotely control the direction of the camera and speak through the camera (at least with cams that support this).

From some searching around this subreddit, it looks like tinycam pro might do some/all of this? That's a good backup if so, but I would love an opensource solution if there's a decent one out there.

    Thanks for any recommendations!

    Smart switch no neutral required.

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 02:20 PM PDT

I picked up an HS200 from Amazon before realizing my switch box does NOT have a neutral wire. So now I'm looking for a switch that does not require a neutral. I paid $18.00 for the HS200, is there a switch without a required neutral wire for less than $50?

    Aeotec Smart Home Hub

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 02:06 PM PDT

Since Samsung has stopped making their 3rd gen Smart Things Hub (hub only w/o router integration) Aeotec has taken over the product line (licensed I guess from Sammy). However, I have not been able to find any US retailer with the device. Their website shows Amazon but when you go to the page Amz indicates "Currently unavailable. We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock". Other than expensive eBay listings how are you are supposed to get this highly rated hub that supports both ZigBee and ZWave protocols? I feel like Samsung and now maybe Aeotec has left us hanging!

Make your own Flic button to trigger Alexa Routines using Home Assistant

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 01:45 PM PDT

I have ~20 smart devices in my house, but got really tired of having to shout at Alexa to trigger my routines. I saw that Flic came out with a button that can trigger Alexa routines, but it costs $30 for one button (plus the cost of their hub)! So I went looking for a cheaper option and I'm now able to use virtually any cheap Zigbee button (like this $7 one from Ikea or a Philips Hue Dimmer Switch) and make it to trigger or toggle through Alexa routines.

To do this I used a popular piece of software called Home Assistant (HA) and a USB Zigbee stick. It's relatively involved to get it up and running (if you know what a Raspberry Pi is you're off to a good start), so this is not for the causal user. If you're motivated to take your smart home to the next level and you're a little technically inclined, it's a really powerful piece of software and it's fun to set up.

To make things as simple as possible, I mostly use HA to connect with all my Zigbee buttons and sensors, and I use Alexa to connect with all my smart devices (lights, sockets, etc). Then in HA I can set it up so if a button is pressed or a motion sensor is activated during a certain time window, it will trigger an Alexa routine via a simple HA addon called Alexa Media Player.

If you're intrigued, here's a great YouTube video to help you get started. Be warned, it's really fun to play with this stuff, but can also take up lots of your time.

Caseta Wireless Smart Lighting Switch question

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 06:44 AM PDT

I think it will be cheaper for me to use this light switch, than by 7 Hue bulbs for my garage ceiling.

My question is, I have 3 rocker light switches in my garage that all control the ceiling lights (1 switch on each wall basically).

Is it possible to buy/use the Caseta Wireless Smart Lighting Switch, on the switch near my back door, and leave the other switches in the off position, and have this still work? Or do I need to buy 3 caseta switches?

What would home automation do for me?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 12:27 PM PDT

I'm trying to decide if I need it, and should set up something like Home Assistant. I have a Mi smart plug but don't use it. I could use their phone app to set up a schedule on it so that it turns on at night when I'm away. My porch light already has a built in thing to turn it on at sundown (I gave it my location so it must have a table of sunset times). My LG washing machine talks to its app on my phone and beeps it when a load is finished. It's also connected to Google Home (as is the Mi plug).

I've set up mosquitto for eventually connecting to an old 433 MHz temperature sensor outside.

I'm not averse to setting up Home Assistant but didn't want to get it set up and realize that I don't need it.

    Smart Light in Vaulted Ceiling?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 11:30 AM PDT

I am currently renovating our master bedroom that has a vaulted ceiling with about a 30 degree slope on each side. I was hoping to reuse my old Sylvania RT5/6 Lightify recessed retrofit bulbs in there, but according to a post I made elsewhere, that slope is too much for a regular recessed light. My question... is there a smart recessed light that works in a sloped ceiling? I want smart bulbs here vs a switch because I want to be able to turn off/dim a certain bulb if I am laying in bed and its blinding me, but still have the room decently lit.

Here is the other thread I made for reference: https://www.reddit.com/r/Remodel/comments/m80sdk/can_lights_with_led_retrofit_kits_in_a_vaulted/

IP CAM with directly stream to YouTube (no extra PC)

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 06:37 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

I would buy a new IP-Cam to stream live to Youtube.

I don't want a mini PC or let run my laptop 24/7 (no OBS etc.)

I know that with Axis, Hikvision and Dahua it's possible to stream directly to YT.

Axis is way too expencive (and need to buy special software).

Anyone knows, wich Hikvison and Dahua cams can stream directly to YT? (via RTMP)

    Specs:

    - <250€

    - IR Night Vision

    - outdoor

    - Mic

    - >4MP

    - WiFi!!

    - to order in the EU (best in Germany directly.. Amazon etc.)

It is for my birdfeeder :-)

    Thanks for your help!!

Wiring for ceiling mount speakers for future use

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 09:12 AM PDT

We are knee deep into a major house remodel. I have exposed ceilings which I can take advantage of and run some wiring for future installation of speakers (Living room, kitchen, and dining area). I plan on likely running a Smart Things system in the future so i can have everything connected but also use something like Alexa for voice command.

Long story short, what kind of wiring should I run now while I have drywall access? I would like to stay as simple as possible so limiting the need for amplifiers etc. Can I just run electrical? Are there speakers that can just take straight electrical and then just connect to the home system via Wifi / Bluetooth, etc.?

Just finished a new SPI-signal splitter. It's nice solution for e.g. hanging lamps using digital pixel LED strips inside. It's using differential signal to allow using long-distance cables. Using the DIP switch you can define, how many LED pixels should each board "grab" from incoming SPI.

    Replacing older model smart plugs

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 06:25 AM PDT

3-4 years ago I picked up a couple of iHome smart plugs which I have some minor uses in the home. I am looking to replace them with a different brand as I am concerned that there has not been a firmware update since 2018. Skimming the webs I find lots of inexpensive options but almost no references to the security and support provided by the manufacturers.

I am hoping to you may have suggestions for brands that have a demonstrated track record of providing regular security updates and decent support for their products more than a few months. I am located in the USA.

    Solar-powered cameras w.o cloud?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 05:41 AM PDT

I have a few acres I want to monitor. I'm thinking a solar-powered wifi camera w/ battery backup would work well, but every camera I see has cloud recording. I would much rather record on-site with my own NVR.

Does anyone have a setup like this?

    Alexa Zigbee Buttons

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 04:41 AM PDT

Just checking I've not missed something but am I right in saying the Amazon Echos Zigbee device handlers lack support for Zigbee buttons?

Also why? I feel Amazon missed a trick here
