iPhone app for calling REST APIs Posted: 27 Apr 2021 04:40 PM PDT I have a few home automation bits running on a Raspberry Pi that are accessible through REST APIs. Does anyone know of an iOS app that I could use to generically invoke these APIs? I'm picturing something like a UI full of buttons that can be assigned to different API calls. It would be similar to Postman (on the desktop), but less developer-centric. Just a screen of big, chunky buttons. Does such a thing exist? [link] [comments]

Smartlocks for non-deadbolt doors Posted: 27 Apr 2021 09:20 AM PDT Hi guys, I notice most smartlocks on the market are made to function with deadbolts. In my country, most doors do not have "Deadbolts" we have this style of door lock. The locking mechanism is springloaded and requires some pressure to unlock, I believe it is called an "automatically locking lock". Do you guys have any experience with these, and which locks would work? [link] [comments]
UK heating control recommendations Posted: 27 Apr 2021 03:06 PM PDT I'm looking for recommendations for a heating control system in the UK. Don't think my needs are too complex, but this is a new area for me (I have a lot of experience in IT infrastructure/programming/APIs, etc), and there seems to be many products that are poorly documented. This is my first foray into home automation beyond some radio controlled plugs to turn the Christmas lights on and off. Current setup: - The boiler is relatively new, and currently controlled by a Drayton LP111 - There is no thermostat Desired features: - Controllable (on/off) via API - I'm assuming this will be via HomeAssistant running in Docker on a Linux box (Linux/Docker/etc is my daily bread and butter) - Need replacement for LP111 heating controller, plus some TRVs (there is a large heating differential between floors I would like to solve) - Ideally z-wave (thick walls/poor radio penetration - I think Z-wave is better in this scenario?) - Cheap(ish) - this is a bit of an experiment for now, so don't want to shell mega-£££ Current status: - Found the Honeywell T6 Pro Z-wave, which looks to be pretty good, but seems to be a US-focused product, can't find anywhere that actually sells it in the UK - For TRVs, I found "Eurotronic SPIRIT" thermostats on Amazon for £29.09 each, which is about half the price of most others, I'm assuming this is because they suck, but open to comments. Recommendations for products are sincerely welcomed, as are some pointers for good search terms or resources to find what I'm looking for Thanks! [link] [comments]

Open source pet monitor / security camera? Posted: 28 Apr 2021 01:11 AM PDT Are there open source projects that can turn old phones/laptops into security cameras? Preferably compatible with Home Assistant. Noise detection would be nice too. I've never been interested in security cameras so recommendations on DVR are also appreciated :) Thanks! Replacing RF remote with WiFi Arduino Posted: 28 Apr 2021 01:03 AM PDT Hey everyone, let me get straight to it.. I am looking to replace the remote for my swimming pool cover with a system that allows me to use Niko Home Control Switches (easywave) and an app on my phone (WiFi / LTE etc). Current situationSo I currently have 2 ways of controlling the cover. By remote or by going into the cellar and pressing the button on the touchscreen. Both of which are simple, but annoying solutions. The computer also holds information on the positions of the motor. When it needs to open the cover, it goes to positions X. When it needs to close the cover it goes to position Y. This information is not stored in the motors, but in the computer. This is also the reason why I can't simply drive the motor to go to the open or closed position. Part 1There are 3 ways I see myself tackling this problem. Or I interface with the computer to drive the motor, or I send out the same signal as the remote does from an Arduino, or I use an Arduino to trigger the remote to send the signal. Interfacing with the computer seems pretty tough, since I would need to reverse engineer all of the messages that it sends to the different parts of the system (there's a lot, it's like a whole electrical cabinet). So I'm ruling that one out. Duplicating the signal using Arduino has the same kind of issue, since the remote uses a protocol that's encrypted. So I would need to reverse engineer that, which might work.. But I haven't ever done something like that yet. So this was my go to option before I thought of the next one. Using the remote control to send the signal. Which means I should just emulate a button press. Which I imagine (haven't checked yet) is just making a connection where needed. Part 2So now the goal is to have a Niko Wireless Switch (Easywave) send a signal to a receiver connected to an Arduino. In turn it uses the remote to send the corresponding signal. In parallel some endpoint that can be queried through WiFi does the same. QuestionsA few questions I have before I start all of this..
Thanks for any ideas / help! [link] [comments]
Are there any HDMI-CEC wireless adapters? Posted: 28 Apr 2021 12:05 AM PDT So I have this peculiar problem. I have an Android TV based projector that is a bit iffy to turn on, as the Bluetooth remote has a pretty big delay, meaning I have to press the power button 3-6 times for it to connect and actually turn the unit on. This is an issue mainly because the damn thing queues commands, so if I press one too many times, it turns itself off immediately - and there's no indication of power status for a few seconds, no lights, no fans, nothing. However, power-on commands through HDMI-CEC work on the first try. Usually, I end up turning on my projector via the connected Chromecast with Google TV dongle, but then I have to hunt for the remote of the projector to switch inputs (for some reason, the CEC forwarding of a connected device's remote commands doesn't work). The Android TV integration of Home Assistant works, except... When the projector powers down, it disconnects from WiFi, meaning HA can't do anything until it's powered on. For this, I'm looking for something similar to the USB-CEC adapter, but something that works wirelessly (either via WiFi, BLE, or even ZigBee). Supplying USB power to it is not a problem, but my HA box is tucked away in my utility cabinet, far from the projector, so no direct connection. Is there a product that fills this niche, or should I just look into hooking up an ESP32-S2 (or something similar) as a WebUSB host? [link] [comments]
How to make a button send a signal to walkie talkie? Posted: 27 Apr 2021 11:28 AM PDT Obligatory sorry for my English (not my mother tongue) and hope this is appropriate for this sub. How would I go about creating a button that sends a prerecorded message to my walkie talkie? I use a walkie talkie for work purposes and would like a button that sends a signal to my earpiece, so customers can discretely tell me to come to the desk. I've considered modifying a wireless doorbell. They usually use a frequency of around 413Mzh. The walkie talkie uses our country's license free 446Mzh. But how to adjust the preset frequency of the doorbell? Or is there a better solution? A pager of some sort? Does electronic desk bells already exist? Or just build everything from scratch? I'd love to get some pointers. [link] [comments]
Cielo Breez Plus vs Flair Puck for mini-split control? Posted: 27 Apr 2021 11:27 AM PDT I just installed a mini split in my house and also purchased a Cielo Breeze Plus. I set it up last night and while it seems nice and at least gives me the ability to set schedules, it seems that it's barely more than a glorified universal remote. It seems that the built in temp sensor doesn't actually get used for anything other than showing the temp on the display and that the most obvious feature of acting as a "follow me" remote is missing. The puck has a feature called "room sense" which seems to do exactly that. Also it seems to have an open API as well as Hubitat integration, which is handy because I have a Hubitat and I would like to use the a/c running state to trigger room fans for better air distribution. Anyone ever compare both of these devices? [link] [comments]
Posted: 27 Apr 2021 10:25 AM PDT Googling around I'm having a hard time finding what I need... Does anyone know of a dimmer plug (that I could use with a dimmable string of lights) that has a rest API? Or alternatively something someone's made a nice Python package for? Everything I've found either doesn't dim, or seems like it can only be used with a proprietary app. [link] [comments]
Best bulb for "Smart WiFi E27/E26 Light Socket" Posted: 27 Apr 2021 09:41 PM PDT Question: do they make short bulbs that would be compatable? Just getting in to low level home automation and I picked up four light socks to use with Alexa. I rent, so I can only do so much for now. Changing to smart switches is out of the question for now. The issue I have was clear right away. The smart socket extends the bulb in my bedroom too far out and prevents me from mounting the dome cover for the ceiling light. [link] [comments]

Question about rf devices' security Posted: 27 Apr 2021 07:51 PM PDT Hi there, Hope someone can help me with a maybe stupid question about rf devices(the ones running at 433MHz). Basically from what I can see, rf devices does not have pairing process, which means we can intercept the signal and use our own hub/bridge to receive and send it to an existing device(maybe limited to some devices due to protocol and compatibility issue). So my question is at the end of day, can someone holding a machine and go to a neighbourhood and just try to listen to every garage door when someone happens to be opening it, and intercept the signal and save for later "use"? Thanks [link] [comments]
Robot vacuum- hard wood floors, big dog Posted: 27 Apr 2021 09:59 AM PDT I live in a small house (950 sq ft, all one floor), with all hard wood floors, no thresholds anywhere. I also live with a 100 pound lab who apparently is always blowing his coat. I also live in LA, so my back yard is dusty which gets tracked in. Because of this, I feel like I both want a vacuum that has an emptying bin (since the dog hair will fill up the regular bin so fast- to give you a clue, when I vacuum with my Dyson v8, I have to empty that bin 2x per session) and a vacuum that has a mop attachment to help with the dust. And just due to the complexity of my house (old house, lots of walls/corners/etc) I want smart mapping. Is there a vacuum that you guys would recommend for me? I don't know if there are any that have all of these features, so, which do you think would be best to compromise on? Was looking to spend around $500, but if I have to go up to get what I really want, willing to do so. [link] [comments]
Shelly 2.5 New Build: In switch box or dedicated enclosure? Posted: 27 Apr 2021 07:39 PM PDT If you were starting light automation from scratch in a new home, would you put shelly's in the light switch boxes or run a massive amount of wires from a dedicated enclosure next to the main circuit panel? I like the idea of a main panel for lighting control, but the ability to use dumb switches with a shelly seems like a significant advantage. Maybe you have a better idea altogether? Does this exist? A wifi physical remote that can trigger home automation? (...or at least, not IR) Posted: 27 Apr 2021 02:55 PM PDT I'm a big fan of using Flirc with a Raspberry Pi to trigger home automation scripts via a traditional IR remote. But since it's IR, it requires line of sight. I'd love to find a way to accomplish something similar using wifi, RF, or maybe bluetooth to trigger scripts on my Raspberry Pi. In a perfect world, I'd like two remotes: One that has all standard universal remote buttons, and one that only has a few buttons which would be my bedside remote. My main priority is the smaller bedside remote since my bedroom and office aren't within IR line of sight of my living room. I've been using a Harmony remote, but Harmony is now officially discontinued, so I'd like to find a replacement that suits my needs. If the Sofa Baton remotes were wifi instead of IR they'd be perfect. [link] [comments]
Broadlink and Google Home TV Integration and Voice Automation Challenges Posted: 27 Apr 2021 09:39 AM PDT Hello All Hoping you may be able to assist me with something I can't seem to figure out. I have broadlink RM mini's and have configured the IR commands for my TV and have done the integration. I have each of my TV's showing up in Ghome and Google recognizes them. I use to have harmony, but with them EOL'ing the platform, I am rearchitecting my automation. I would like to get to a point where whatever room a user is in they say "google, turn up the TV, or turn on the TV", removing the need to say "basement" Living room" and so on. Right now that works with how I have Broadlink set up, however, I can turn on and off, and volume change, but Google Home won't recognize pause or play, even though I can use the broadlink app to do that. Is there something I can change on the Broadlink side to get Google to do that? [link] [comments]
Voice annunciation with smart speakers? Posted: 27 Apr 2021 05:47 AM PDT Has anyone seen an example leveraging smart speakers (mix of Echos and Home minis) for text-to-speech annunciation? Many years back a friend had a basic wireless alarm system with all-in-one keypad, "hub", and annunciator centrally located. I found it extremely useful hearing "front door open" when you otherwise wouldn't be able to hear the door (for example). If possible to do true text to speech the possibilities would be endless. If not voice, possibly playing distinguishable tones? Camp HS4 for what it's worth, but I'm guessing this is more an API possibility/feature question. A kludge would be a Bluetooth connection from the HA controller, but I'm thinking something more programmatic (ability to target specific/multiple speakers, using built in voice packs) [link] [comments] |
