Looking for wifi camera or devices that will trigger alerts on phone, motion or some alarm

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 09:03 PM PDT

It seems that everything is a subscription to get a basic alert on your phone for motion detection.

We simply want to set up a motion sensor in the garage that will alert the user on the phone and /or sound an alarm. Like how the Ring door bell would work but don't want to pay any subscription fees!!

Any advice on brands or products?

Switches - Old House No Neutrals

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 09:05 PM PDT

Old house with no neutral to any light switch. Home automation currently supported by Smartthings but looking to move to either Hubitat or Home Assistant. What's the best switch option? Thank you for your thoughts!

HomeKit IR for Window AC + Ceiling Fan

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 08:36 PM PDT

What solutions had you folks had success with for this?

I have a Window AC unit and a ceiling fan that both have IR receivers. Might have another fan with RF too.

Assume I'd need to use HomeBridge as I couldn't find any HomeKit native devices.

I saw the Bond, Cielo and Broadlink, but looking for something with more security / privacy (though I know fan / AC is not really personal info...).

Have heard people love their Logitech Harmony Hubs, but unsure if I should invest as it's going end of life :(

Even semi open to building a ESP8266 solution, but feeling kind of lazy right now, lol.

    Thanks!

    Leaving Control 4 suggestions

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 12:56 PM PDT

I have had a Control 4 system for the past 8.5 years. My HC300 died and now none of the system is salvageable according to the companies who have come out. They want me to replace everything including the screens on our walls . With so many new options on the market now we would prefer to use something more user friendly. We're pretty good with technology so we would rather not have to rely on someone else every time something is added, moved, needs updating, etc.

We run thermostats, alarm, door locks, lights, audio, and living room setup on our system. If I can add cameras that would be good too. Any suggestions?

Motion sensor that works with alexa?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 07:46 PM PDT

Is there a motion sensor that will trigger an Alexa action or response? I really love the kasa line of products, but wish I could make lights turn on when a motion sensor were triggered

Zooz Zen22 Flicker at power on/off

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 05:27 PM PDT

I've just installed a Zooz Zen22 v4 dimmer on a set of 3 incandescent 60w lights. I'm able to connect it to my Hubitat and control it as expected. However, when I power the lights on or off they flash (or flicker, whichever word you choose) and then go to the expected on/off setting. Is there a solution for this that I'm unable to find?

When I search for this issue I keep finding issues around LED or Smart lights, but nothing relating to incandescents.

    TP link fried my fan

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 05:12 PM PDT

I have two new fans with lights on my patio connected to a pair of three-way switches. The fans came with built-in remote controls and I used a bond hub to turn the lights and fans on and off with it. I wasn't very happy with this setup though because the hub would constantly get out of sync with the fans even if we didn't use the remote controls.

I swapped out one of the two 3 way switches with a TP-Link kasa 3way. Shortly thereafter I noticed sometimes, especially when leaving the fans on for 15+ min, the lights would start flickering and then go back to normal. The flickering was very noticeable with the lights completely turning off and on again multiple times through the course of a few seconds. I thought it was just one of the fans at first but I noticed it was happening to both, but not at the same time. After while I also started noticing that you could audibly hear the fan turn off a couple seconds before the lights flickered but we never noticed it at the time because everything corrects itself so the fan never actually stops.

After a couple of weeks, one of the fans and lights completely stopped turning on. I discontinued use of the fans until I could swap out the three-way switch for a traditional switch again. The problem appears to have completely gone away with the one fan that still works, the other one us still broken. What would cause the Kasa switch to have issues like this? I'm not certain if it's a broken switch or issue with using a smart switch in this scenario.

    Realistic Z-wave range?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 10:42 AM PDT

Setting up more devices on my zwave network, and having trouble. So far they're all wired dimmers.

I'm having trouble with pairing a device that is 14 feet from the next. Obviously I'm never going to get the specified 300 ft range unless I go stand on a frictionless plane of uniform density, and I know having more devices in the mesh will strengthen the mesh, but if I can't make it 14 feet there's not even an outlet between them to add another.

House is stud+drywall. Unfortunately all the electrical is metal boxes and conduit, so I imagine that's causing most of the woes. But am I crazy to expect more than 5% of the theoretical range?

Upgrading manual door buzzer to remote?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 08:21 AM PDT

Is anyone aware of hardware that can upgrade a simple buzzer for opening the front gate to one that can be operated over the internet? As it stands currently we have a house with a porch gate that can be opened via a button that "buzzes" the person in. I'd like to be able to upgrade this to work remotely.

Is there a device to convert PoE to 16-24v for doorbell?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 03:46 PM PDT

I bought a home and the current doorbell wire doesn't work. I have no idea where it goes and it's not powered.

I'm installing a PoE line to where the doorbell is. I plan on eventually installing a PoE doorbell (probably a DoorBird), but I have an existing cheap Amcrest doorbell/camera (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07ZJS3L5Y) that I'd like to use for now. I bought this before I knew the current doorbell wire doesn't work.

Is there a device that can take an Ethernet line in and give me 24v out to plug into the doorbell?

    Maybe this?

    https://www.amazon.com/GAT-24v25w-802-3at-24-Volt-Converter-Step-Down/dp/B07FHSSPR1

    Or this?
    https://www.amazon.com/Splitter-COOSO-Passive-Compatible-Switches/dp/B01MYTJ8Q3

Or I watched a video where someone just plugged the PoE wires directly into a doorbell. I'm not an electrician and I don't want to burn my house down :-D

How would I go about setting up an outdoor camera for live streaming a beehive?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 09:48 AM PDT

I'm not sure if this is the right sub, but I'm hoping to livestream my beehive via a wireless camera & wifi. I'm a bit overwhelmed on how to even go about this (still researching cameras too!) & what specs I should be looking for. I would love any advice or direction! & if you have camera recommendations, even better (~$250-300 budget or less).

Possible to use wired door sensors with two systems?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 11:51 AM PDT

I just moved into a house that looks like it has wired magnetic door sensors installed. I found the panel and the wires that go to it. It's a standard two wire sensor. If I want to connect the door sensor to both A Ring retrofit kit and a konnected system, would it be possible to have the wires door sensors connected with both?

    Bypassing garage door sensor

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 11:48 AM PDT

Hear me out. I have an older Liftmaster garage opener, and i just got the gateway to hook it up to to MyQ. Everything works well, except closing the door. After som research i learned that I would need the sensors to close the door using MyQ. I found som videos online, but all of them have the sensors, just taped together. My question is then, is there any way to short the circuit using just wires, or do I need to have the sensors? It's no problem for me to get them, but the cheapest i can find them for i ~$50 including shipping. And I just feel like that would be like throwing my money down the drain.

    Thanks!

Shelly 2.5 : Garage Door Control

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 11:26 AM PDT

    Hello all -

I am about to jump into the Shelly Cloud world with automating my garage door controls.

Question 1: Could I use Shelly 2.5 if I wanted to read in a reed switch to determine if the door is closed (magnetic sensor) AND also be able send a low voltage output to the door controller (e.g. momentary button push to operate the garage door). For power i would have a 24v power source plugged into an outlet.

About the future of Thread, now that Apple has put its hand in that jar

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 09:47 AM PDT

I had been following the Thread protocol for a while (well, more precisely the OpenThread implementation made by google). Recently, Apple has taken certain initiative to use Thread networking for their home automation ecosystem (?).

I have a technical interest in that. I don't own any Apple device and that won't change any time soon, but I have a bunch of nRF52840 devices and certain ideas for DIY Home Automation projects that involve Zephyr and OpenThread.

First of all: anybody knows the technical details of the Thread infrastructure as envisioned by Apple? A Thread infrastructure provides an IPv6 network, but the protocol is application layer agnostic (AFAICT). I know that Nest use the Weave protocol (OpenWeave exists but don't know how to really use it). I don't know what Apple does, and the press kits out there are not very useful. On my home I was planning on using MQTT (I already have a MQTT server). Zephyr has also support for LWM2M, but that seems like a lot of hassle (I like the idea of smart home outliving the death of a MQTT server, but reaching that goal seems like a long path of pain and suffering). The idea of mimicking the application layer of Apple may be a good idea, supposing that it takes off and other brands start to offer Thread devices. Best case scenario, my DIY will integrate nicely with off-the-shelf products of any brand. Worst case scenario, they will all contribute to the mesh network without directly talking one another.

Second: is there any group of people with similar interests? I know that it is a small niche (electronic hobbyists that program microcontrollers and are interested in IoT/HomeAutomation and Thread).

Third, in a wider scope (non-technical opinions are welcome here): What do you think that will be the future of Thread protocol? Do you think that is is a new standard that will save home automation /s? Do you think it is a fad? Has anybody here any first-hand experience with Thread products (from off-the-shelf products or from 802.15.4-ready devices such as the nRF52840)?

Edit: Sorry for the "OTHER" flair. Where do I have to sign to start a petition to add a "Thread" flair, just as there are Z-WAVE and ZIGBEE ones?

Seeking: Scheduled plugs that don’t require internet to setup or use?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 09:26 AM PDT

I'm a new homeowner that can't move into my house until June. I won't have internet for a couple of weeks because the internet provider needs time to set up a line to my house. However I want to prevent break-ins. I'm looking for a smart plug that doesn't need internet to set up or to maintain a schedule so I can put a lamp inside my living room that turns on and off.

Does anyone know of anything like this?

    Best lock for bedroom door

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 09:20 AM PDT

I want to install a bedroom door lock that unlocks automatically when I approach from the outside.

My current thinking is to have an iBeacon on the back side of the door set to check 10x/second:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Z1FR6GY

To have Owntracks on my phone (https://owntracks.org/).

When Owntracks sees the iBeacon it does a push event to Node-RED which tells the door lock to unlock.

Inside the room there will be a Aqara motion sensor. If there is someone in the room then the door will not unlock when the phone is nearby.

I'm not 100% sure the above will work, but I think it will from what I've read. My question is, what lock to buy? Every lock I see is made for exterior doors. Are there any locks that can be controlled with home automation for interior bedroom doors?
