    Savant System troubleshooting help/question

    Posted: 25 Apr 2021 04:40 PM PDT

I've got an older Savant system with a pro host (MacMini Late 2012 w/davinci 5.2) and a smart media pro chassis (SSP-0600-00) . A recent firmware upgrade (1.9.3) with my Ubiquiti UDM Pro router suddenly made it stop working. I've been able to find a work around but I'm hoping someone here might have some insight so I can figure out what happened.

Essentially after the upgrade the host doesn't think the chassis is on the same network. However if I put them on their own VLAN and the let the host bridge the two networks (wired on VLAN, and wireless on main network) things work. I've got a ticket opened with Ubiquiti but it would help to know what's actually going on. What network protocol is being used to establish that connection?

My integrator doesn't exist anymore unfortunate so I can't call them to find out.

I'm working on establishing a relationship with a new integrator (to upgrade) but one isn't taking on existing systems, one didn't return my inquiries, and the other is taking 2 weeks between responses. Those are the only options available to me unless someone knows a remote programmer they can refer me to.

    Edited for clarity

Is Soma 2 still the best option for Smart Home Blind motors for Homekit?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2021 11:02 PM PDT

I've been reading reviews in the search bar but have been very mixed, from r/HomeAutomation and r/homekit . Wondering if the Soma 2 is still the best option or if there's any better alternatives in 2021? I have 8 ball-and-chain loop thingies that you need to pull, and haven't found any compelling alternatives without having to replace the entire blinds especially for HomeKit. Anything better I could go with?

Combining smart lights and smart switches-solving they always on problem

    Posted: 25 Apr 2021 06:46 PM PDT

I love my Hue Switch and bulb combo because it solves the always in problem of smart bulbs and lets me combine overhead lights and lamps in a single room. The main problem is the cost. I am using Geeni light switches in the living room of my house because they let me cheaply do a single switch for 4 or more lights. That led me to getting some Geeni smart bulbs for areas that are now tied to Geeni TAP switches. The problem is, if i use the switch to turn off the lights, i can't use voice to turn on the lights since they are not disconnected. How do people handle this?

I have an amp and a sub without a trigger system and I'm wondering what kind of device would be able to turn a subwoofer off when the amplifier it's connected to is turned off? Problem is Amplifier is connected to UPS and Subwoofer is not. What am I even looking for?

Smart dimmer switch compatible with Phillips Hue Hub?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2021 05:19 PM PDT

I can't figure out from Googling: I have some Phillips Hue smart bulbs and the Phillips Hue bridge. I'd like to get a smart dimmer switch (to control non-smart ceiling lights), but it doesn't look like Phillips has anything like that.

I see that Phillips Hue uses Zigbee -- if I get a zigbee-compatible smart switch, can I use it with the Phillips Hue hub? Can anyone recommend a switch that would work?

Replace X10 switch with regular switch?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2021 12:47 PM PDT

Replace X10 switch with regular switch?

Bought a house from the 90's that I believe uses X10 to control the lights in the living room (not used anywhere else in the house); please see photos of switch. I don't know anything about X10, but from reading it sounds like there are switches, controllers, and somethings wall switches are controllers.

    Two problems:

    • Trying to use LEDs in the recessed cans controlled by the "switch" is behaving weird (LED is on immediately even if switch is off, pushing "off" turns LED off for 2-3 seconds before light comes back on automatically). Sounds like there are known issues with x10 and LEDs (and maybe dimming?)
    • I'd like to simply replace the switch (controller?) (photo below) with a non-smart switch for the time being, before planning out automation for the whole house.

Reading https://www.reddit.com/r/electronics/comments/27f8x7/replace_x10_switch_with_regular_switch/ and https://www.reddit.com/r/homeautomation/comments/9wc28t/moving_from_x10_switches/ it seems like I could simply put a non-smart switch inline on the (presumably) black wires in the photos? Is this right?

That said, I would be interested in learning what is happening in the current setup. Each of the buttons in the photo controls two recessed cans. I assume this means each can must have something that receives a signal from this switch, and each recessed can is receiving power all the time, but it "turns on/off" locally based on the signal? After going back to a non-smart switch, what prevents the recessed cans from acting weird based on X10 if I don't remove whatever is receiving the signal at the cans (if this is actually what is setup)?

    Thanks for all the wisdom.

    Laundry room under cabinet lighting

    Posted: 25 Apr 2021 12:46 PM PDT

Trying to figure out what would be the best solution. I have a raspberry pi3 running home assistant with a zooz zwave usb stick.

I currently have a Govee Warm White LED Strip Lights Dimmable Strip Lights with Control Box https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XGKX327

connected to a kasa smart plug connected behind the dryer.I also have a kasa light switch on the wall that controls the overhead light with a scene setup to turn the plug on and off. Problem is since the devices are WiFi there is about a 2-3 second delay from clicking the switch to having the under cabinets lights come on. Sometimes a little more and sometimes it never comes (not so often but maybe once or twice a month).

I am swapping the kasa light switch to a inovelli, but I was not sure if i should get a zwave compatible smart plug that will connecting that to the switch to turn on instantly. But I don't know if that will fix the delay or if the grovve switch will still have a delay due to the control box. Or if I should look into a zwave light solution.

I am brand new to zwave and have stuck with wifi solutions till now, but that delay is bothersome so if I can I would like to get rid of it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Question for those with Honeywell Tuxedo Touch Controller/Keypad

    Posted: 25 Apr 2021 04:13 PM PDT

I have a honeywell vista 20p system with two Ademco 6150 keypads. I've done some programming with the 6150s, but obviously not ideal since they are not alphanumeric. I'd like to upgrade one of them to a tuxedo touch, but I'm not sure which generation.

1)Do the newer gen touchpads (6290w) have the same ability to send email alerts as the old generation touchpad (6280i) did? See guide here for how to do it on an old gen touchpad: https://www.alarmgrid.com/faq/can-a-tuxedo-touch-text-my-phone-messages

2)Would upgrading my keypad essentially be plug and play since all the wiring is the same? If not, can I program/activate the new tuxedo touchpad using the same tuxedo touchpad or am I stuck having to activate the new touchpad using my old 6150? Would greatly appreciate any instructions I can use blind with the 6150 since I'd like to avoid having to upgrade my other 6150 to a 6160 alphanumeric at this time.

    Thanks

    Suggestions for smart switches

    Posted: 25 Apr 2021 02:07 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I'm building a new home and wondering what are best switches to use. The new home has neutral wires and like the idea of using a hub since I want to do a lot of automation with motion sensors. I want to use the neutral wire since the other lights are constantly on and use power that way.

I want to stay away from wifi switches because I intend to use a lot of switches and don't want to load up my network. Maybe a separate VLAN might help?

My ideal price is around $50.

Looking for "dumb" front door lock that has NFC, but no other smart features.

    Posted: 25 Apr 2021 12:33 PM PDT

I've been looking online and all locks that have NFC also have the smart features that connect to the network. I guess I don't have to connect it, but still feels wasteful if I'm paying for it and could potentially still have vulnerabilities. Anyone have recommendations for keyless entry?

Is there any open source voice assistant that processes requests on a local server?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2021 12:24 PM PDT

I know there are a lot of open source voice assistant projects out there, but it looks like most of them (try to) process the voice request on the same device that listens for the request. Are there any projects that have one device (a pi?) listen for a wake word, and then once it's detected, stream the request to a local machine/server to process the request? Pretty much the same way the Amazon Echos work, but entirely local to your network.

Best dimmable recessed lights and Z-Wave wall switch combo?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2021 11:32 AM PDT

Hi all, I currently have some Z-Wave dimming wall switches and no-brand recessed LED lights. I'm moving to a new house with incandescent and CFL recessed ceiling lights + dumb light switches. Thankfully there are neutral wires in the gang boxes so I can install pretty much what I want. I want z-wave switches and LED recessed lights.

My controller is an Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5, plugged into HomeAssistant. I've reviewed compatibility charts and reviews sometime complain about buzzing noise.

Ideally, someone has a set up like this that is dead silent and can recommend a combo.

    Multiple WiFi Networks

    Posted: 25 Apr 2021 09:57 AM PDT

I'm thinking about setting up two WiFi routers, one for computers, tvs, and phones, and one for automation and smart home produce. Other than cost, is there any reason not to do this?

Reply: Thanks all! It sounds like one mesh network would be the best route.
