Trying to get started with some minor home automaton and I am just lost Posted: 24 Apr 2021 05:35 PM PDT Ok.... Hopefully this post will make sense... I am close to closing on my first house. I want to add some minor automations mostly. An example will be When I arm the security system 1) Turn on certain lights 2) turn on certain smart plugs 3) Reduce the need for the thermostat 4) Start playing a certain playlist from Plex on a certain smart speaker for the dogs to listen to 5) lock the doors after a minute or two Here is what I have to work with 1) I use Blue Iris and Amcrest cameras. All of my cameras are powered via smart plugs because I do not want them on when I am home. 2) My Doorbell is also Amcrest. I went with this because of the Blue Iris integration and as well as the ability to get notified on our Echo Shows and see the feed. 3) All of my smart plugs are TP-Link. I like them server the purpose. 4) I just purchased the Yale Assure wifi / bluetooth smart locks because of the key back up and the ability to auto unlock upon approach with our phones. I currently have two Echo Shows (one 10 and one 8), but I am not tied to these if a nest hub can give me what I want. I prefer google over amazon, but I don't think I can view the Amcrest doorbell Camera feed on a Next hub or get the notifications. If I can I would like to switch over to a nest hub, but Ring wont integrate with the nest hub.... I think for the security aspect I am going to go with Ring, but I could possibly swayed to Abode. I really don't want Simply Safe because there is no app support if you don't pay for monitoring. My Ring kit would include window / door sensors, smoke/ CO2 detectors, and a flood sensor or two. An Ecobee thermostat is also in the cart for the house. Here is where I am stuck / lost - 1) Making them all talk - I am thinking I need a hub, but which one? 2) I want easy. I ant stress this enough. I am not in the mood to nor do I have the mental capacity to learn code or spend all of my free time trouble shooting automations or keeping up with them. I want to set them up once and that's it. Also, It needs to be easy for my wife to use. I wish the Google routines were a bit more robust because I can add them as a shortcut to execute from the home screen (which is the level of ease I want for my wife to use). Now a lot of reviews say the Samsung SmartThings hub is one of the best, but I cant find the damn thing anywhere. I see a lot of people are using Home Assistant or IFTTT but like I said I refuse to spend my free time keeping up with all of this or spending weeks coding. What are my other options. I am jsut so lost and confused about what I should be buying and how to get all talking so that I can perform a few automations based around home monitoring. [link] [comments]

From scratch project, help needed!! Posted: 24 Apr 2021 11:34 PM PDT I have decided to make a project where I design an entire home automation system from the base up and would really like any help and tips. I plan on connecting the control module to the phone using Wi-Fi. And would really like to not use Arduino like modules but rather a from scratch one. Thanks guys! [link] [comments]

Am I crazy for wanting to DIY the automation for a 10K sq foot new construction house? Posted: 24 Apr 2021 10:47 AM PDT My wife and I have been going back and forth about this for days now. We're building a new generally high-end 10K sq foot house in Dayton, Ohio. We have a quote from the local Control4 dealer to handle everything in the house: lights, shades, garage door opener, cameras, and audio/video distribution. The quote is just shy of $200K. The biggest factor holding me back, other than the significant cost, is the lack of "control" I keep reading about with C4 systems. I'm a software developer and it irks me to no end that I'd have to call my dealer every time I want to add a device or make a change. I'm aware that C4 now offers the Composer Home Edition which lets the homeowner make some changes, but still seems I'd be reliant on my dealer. In reading lots of reviews of C4, I see that some people have a lot of frustration with the competence of their dealer. My dealer, so far, has been completely professional and competent -- I have no concerns there. Just the issue over the actual "control" I'd be getting with Control4. This has led me to do a deep dive into DIY equipment and protocols. I feel like I have a good understanding of what I would need to do to automate the lights/shades with either SmartThings or Hubitat. I'd probably layer SharpTools on top of either. But I'm also concerned that I haven't come across a lot of articles or case studies documenting doing this all yourself with a new build house of this size. I've solved some rather difficult problems in my career as a software developer, so I figure this can't be all that hard. We're going to the phase of construction where I'd need to tell the electrician what I want him to do, and that's making me nervous. Do I go forward with DIY or resign myself to the complexity of this and go with the Control4 dealer? [link] [comments]
Drip Irrigation with Shelly 1? Posted: 24 Apr 2021 04:39 PM PDT Hello! First time posting here, looking for some assistance with a little project. A quick disclaimer - I know next to nothing about electrical wiring, volts, amps, etc. and I might be a bit in over my head on this, but I'll try to give as much relevant info as possible. Now that that is out of the way, I'm trying to set up a small, solar powered drip irrigation system to help keep my plants watered and happy. My plan was/is to use a Shelly 1 as a Home Assistant controlled switch to turn the pump on/off with some smarts. I've been using Home Assistant for some time and I was easily able to get the Shelly 1 integrated to HA, but I'm having some issues getting the pump, Shelly 1 and maybe charge controller playing nicely. For equipment, I'm using this solar panel, this solar charge controller, this battery, this Shelly 1 and this is the pump I'm using. So far, I've been able to connect the solar panel and battery to the charge controller and that seems to be working just fine. I'm also able to connect the pump directly to the charge controller and this also works. The pump will kick on, immediately off and then some time (~15-30 seconds) will pass and the pump will start to pump continuously. I think, where I'm running into issues is with adding the Shelly 1. First, I moved the bridge from 110 - 230V to the 12V DC on the Shelly 1. Then, when I connect the Shelly 1 directly to the load on the charge controller, with nothing else, the Shelly will turn on and I was able to configure WiFi, switch on/off, etc. I haven't changed any of the settings on the Shelly itself, besides Wifi. It's when I try to wire the pump and Shelly 1 together, I hit issues. I found a wiring guide that I thought would work, but no luck so far. I have the N (+) from the battery in the N on the Shelly 1, along with one of the wires from the pump (the pump says polarity doesn't matter). I have the L(-) from the battery to the L on the Shelly as well as another wire as like a bridge to the I on the Shelly. Lastly, I have the other wire on the pump to the O on the Shelly. I don't have anything in the SW on the Shelly as I have no physical on/off switch. With this wiring set up, when I connect to the charge controller and turn on the load the Shelly 1 will power on. Once powered on and I can see it available in HA/web browser and I hit the power button the pump will kick on for a split second and then the Shelly 1 powers off/restarts. I'm very much expecting to hear that I completely misunderstand the use of the Shelly and I should use some other thing to accomplish my end goal, but it also feels like I'm close (because the pump does briefly switch on) and just need a nudge in the right direction. Anyone have the patience to help a novice out? I've searched high and low for videos/guides for how to get this done but I'm not finding exactly what I need. If there's some major detail I've left out, or pictures make it easier, let me know I'll see what I can get! Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Canadian Shopping for a security monitoring provider Posted: 24 Apr 2021 03:46 PM PDT Hello, I'm a Canadian searching for a new security monitoring solution. My current provider can't integrate into IFTTT or Google Home. Has anyone been able to find a solution for home monitoring with integration? I'm open to DIY solutions too, not just service providers. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Using http request or self made app to operate august Wi-Fi door lock. Posted: 24 Apr 2021 01:59 PM PDT Hi, I want to use my self made android app to operate August Wi-Fi door lock. Is there any way to do this? I thought about IFTTT , but I can't select the applet automatically. I need to manually set it up with a webhook and then pass the webhook to my app to trigger that. But I want to connect and operate the device entirely through my app. Is it possible with August Wi-Fi door lock. If not, Are there any other good quality Wi-Fi doorlock which can be operated by self made app through HTTP requests ,MQTTT or something like that? [link] [comments]

Posted: 24 Apr 2021 07:40 AM PDT I'm currently using a Harmony hub for controlling all my AV stuff. With the Harmony product line being discontinued, I'm considering the Broadlink line of products for a couple other areas in our house. I'm interested in any feedback others might have in harmony hub vs broadlink products. I'm an Apple-centric environment with a homebridge server to control anything that doesn't have native Homekit support. [link] [comments]

Need Help with Hue Lights - Bridge Set Up Posted: 24 Apr 2021 09:05 AM PDT Hello! I recently bought a Phillips Hue lights starter kit with 3 bulbs and a hue bridge (version 2, the square one). I connected the ethernet to my router (TP Link, Archer A5) and plugged in the power cord to an outlet. Only the power light comes on solid, although the second light does occasionally flicker. I've tried resetting it and power cycling it, but that did nothing. My router provides both 5 ghz and 2.4 ghz. I've disabled the 5 ghz, in hopes that the Bridge would finally see the 2.4ghz, and also made it so that no password is required, but that didn't change anything. I've also ensured UPnP is enabled, and DHCP. Anyone have any suggestions? I was really excited for hue lights, I really hope I don't have to return them. Or are there other smart bulb brands that would work easier? I'd prefer not to have bluetooth ones... in case my phone dies or isn't working. *** Update: Hue customer support on Twitter suggested plugging my ethernet into my laptop, and that got the 2nd light on. So the ethernet cable isn't the problem. Also, my laptop had internet when I turned the wifi off and connected the laptop to the router via ethernet. [link] [comments]
Automate colorful sunrise and sunset Posted: 24 Apr 2021 08:34 AM PDT I am trying to figure out how to use smartbulbs (phillips hue with bridge) and wiz wifi to simulate animates scenes. Specifically I want to create a sunries starting with dim blues, brighten to pink, then red, orange, yellow, and then up to a full bright daylight. Id like to be able to control a slow color fading from color to color and also a slow increase in brightness across about an hour, starting at a given time in Early morning. In the evening, I would like to be able to trigger the reverse of this. DOes anyone know how I could go about achieving this effect? [link] [comments]
