Triggering a Signal from Win10 on a CPU Process? Posted: 23 Apr 2021 05:40 PM PDT I'm looking for a way to output a signal from a Windows 10 machine when a specific CPU Process is over a certain amount (ie- 10%). I want to trigger a light on/off ultimately. I'm not sure if this is easiest from a PCB (perhaps a esp32?), or if there's a way via a USB to wire or something? I appreciate any ideas you may have! UPDATE- more details here. Basically I'm running some MySQL queries that take a long time to complete, and I have A LOT of them to go... so I was wanting to hook up an LED/beacon light, or possibly get an email, iOS alert, SMS, etc- just to know when the process has completed and I can check the results, and start the next one. I know when I'm running the queries, the MySQLD.exe process is using over 10% or more in the Task Manager- so I was hoping to find something that would Alert me when it goes on/off? Thank you! Merlin/Chamberlain serial connection? Posted: 23 Apr 2021 05:49 PM PDT I've had a Merlin MS65MYQ garage door opener installed recently. Naturally I avoided the cloud-based disaster that is MyQ. I'm using a relay and reed switch on an ESP to control and sense state (setup from previous garage opener), which works great. I had a thought, it would be cool and neater to be able to just get the state from the serial pin on the back (page 6). Has anyone out there had a crack at figuring out the serial coms on a Merlin/Chamberlain opener? [link] [comments]
Posted: 23 Apr 2021 09:25 PM PDT I am mostly running things off google home. I am trying to get a bunch of roller shades for my West facing slider doors. I mostly want them to go up and down with the sun. The quote I got for Lutron was like $6-7k. Tilt looks to be decent. They are $400 or so each for their roller shades for a total of like $3k with accessories. Did anyone have any experience with them? [link] [comments]
Diy Spotify Connect receiver for Bluetooth speaker Posted: 23 Apr 2021 02:55 PM PDT I've followed several guides on reddit on making a Spotify connect receiver but none of them mentioned using it with a Bluetooth speaker with no Aux jack. Does anyone know of a way to do it? [link] [comments]
Posted: 23 Apr 2021 08:43 PM PDT Hey guys I've posted here before bout wanting a cheap smart lock, first i wanted a smart lock that i could use with alexa and if someone didn't lock the door look it remotely but now i have a different idea, how about a way to check if the door was locked? Like idk a camera is the obvious one but anything that can send a notification or something showing the status of the lock ? [link] [comments]
Chamberlain MyQ schedules do not run Posted: 23 Apr 2021 12:44 PM PDT Has anyone run into a problem with their Chamberlain MyQ garage door opener where the schedules do not run (i.e., door does not close at the scheduled time), but the open/close functionality in the app works perfectly? I am using the iOS app. The door opener is connected to Wifi (I can see it in my router and the wifi light on the opener is green). My network has a router/firewall/pi-hole but traffic is open on port 8883 and the pi-hole has not blocked any requests from the opener. I called Chamberlain but they said to delete/recreate the schedule and make sure the ports were open. Does anyone know how the architecture works? I monitored some of the traffic going to/from the opener. I suspect the schedules go from the app to a Chamberlain server and then the garage door polls the server for the schedule updates. The Chamberlain CSR said the schedules run locally from the garage door. juls [link] [comments]
IKEA Tradfri LED 806 LM Bulbs - firmware 2.3 no longer has color presets Posted: 23 Apr 2021 07:50 PM PDT IKEA Tradfri LED 806 LM Bulbs - firmware 2.3 no longer has color presets. I bought 4 IKEA Tradfri bulbs a month ago, they are on firmware 2.0.029 I bought 8 additional IKEA Tradfri bulbs this week. They are on firmware 2.3.050 The new bulbs, on firmware 2.3, no longer have preset color options on either the IKEA Home app, or Google home. Any idea why? [link] [comments]

Insteon dimmers hate LEDs - but I found a workable solution Posted: 23 Apr 2021 11:12 AM PDT After installing Insteon lighting controls, and then converting the entire house to LED lighting, I had a huge problem: Flickering fixtures! Some LEDs would strobe constantly, others only when dimmed, and others seemingly at random. I know that lots of people have experienced the same problem, and that Insteon just sucks when it comes to LED compatibility. Shame on them. But I did find some patterns, a few ways to make things better, and finally a workable solution that solved all of my troubles. My findings in a nutshell: 1) Most but not all LEDs flicker, and some are much worse than others, but even very high quality LEDs can have problems - My $500 outdoor fixtures had a subtle flicker when dimmed below around 50% for example, and even SORAA lights with an excellent no-load LED transformer would shimmer when dimmed below 5%. So it's not simply a matter of only "cheap" LEDs being problematic. It's an Insteon problem. 2) Insteon Keypads (the ones with multiple buttons) are MUCH worse than the Instead dimmers. Many flicker problems can be fixed by switching from a Keypad to a Dimmer or an embedded module. 3) When all else fails, add a bypass resistor. I finally solved the last of my flicker problems by adding a small dummy load resistor to any circuit that showed any flicker. A plain old 10K resistor would work, but then I'd have to worry a bit about heat build-up, so I cheated and bought a commercial version designed for exactly this purpose. I used an "Aeotec Bypass for Nano Dimmer" but there are others - PCS sells their "10K load resistor" for example. You just need a beefy 10K resistor with some heat dissipation abilities and a nice package. The resistors live in the junction box behind the Insteon Keypad or Dimmer and wire between the Hot and Neutral wires on the "Load" side of the circuit. Easy. Maximum power consumption is around 1.4W, but it's usually less than that since my lighting circuits spend most of their time at least partially dimmed. As a side note, it's not JUST an Insteon problem. At one point I tried a really expensive "LED Compatible" Lutron RadioRA2 device, and it had the same problem, just slightly less so. Smartthings Hub V2 + Sengled Smart Bulbs Posted: 23 Apr 2021 12:32 PM PDT I'm currently using Sengled Smart Bulbs on a Sengled Hub but I bought a used Smartthings Hub V2 to try before I integrate more things into my home. The hubs all set up after a phone call to Samsung customer service but now I can't connect to the Sengled Bulbs from the Smartthings app (Android). I don't need to disconnect my Sengled hub, do I? I don't want to. EDIT: I reset a few bulbs by turning them on/off 10 times and was able to connect them to the Smarttthings hub but this disconnected them from the sengled app. I reset one of those bulbs to reconnect it to the sengled hub but this disconnected it from the smartthings app. Why cant I use both? Posted: 23 Apr 2021 12:19 PM PDT Hey everyone. So i recently bought ny first house (yay big step) and im completely renovating it. Now for the electricity, a company suggested going with domotica and introduced KNX to me. Looking into it, it seems very interesting. Mainly, because from what i understand, its very reliable. I was always planning to introduce smart home/automation to my home but didn't know about the wired stuff until now. Is the KNX wired system that much better/reliable? Are the wireless systems that unreliable? Im also worried about adding to the KNX system. Looks to me that once its installed its very difficult to add new devices for more automation. I'm new to all this so im sure that down the line id have many new ideas to automate things. Wanting to add more sensors and stuff. (also its soooo expensive) On the other side with the wireless systems like zigbee or z-wave its seems like its difficult to have things communicating with each other. I don't have a programming background so those hubs that require that seem like a big stretch for me. Maybe there are hubs that i dont know about? (The last one i was looking at was homey.) So yeah... I guess I'm mostly asking for what your guys experience is with the systems and what you guys would suggest. (Im from Europe (belgium) btw. Seems like the markets are a bit different in other places.) [link] [comments]
Smart Switch for Bathroom Fan? Posted: 23 Apr 2021 09:46 AM PDT Can I use a regular GE smart switch to control a bathroom exhaust fan? It's a single speed so I don't think I need a fan controller but I've also heard that motors can burn out a smart switch. [link] [comments]
How to Integrate Smart Home Systems Posted: 23 Apr 2021 11:15 AM PDT Hi everyone! We just purchased a home and want to improve our smart home game. First thing is to build a home security system that can be integrated with a smart hub. We are currently on Google Home but thinking about jumping ship to Alexa due to the abundance of product integration to choose from. I'm torn between utilizing the existing system and go for the product of choice in each category, or go with Ring and get everything all integrated at a lower subscription cost. But I am definitely worried about the terrifying experience I'm reading about with Ring. Also wondering if anyone here use multiple apps to control different systems and your user experience. I have listed the systems we are considering. Please help! Thanks in advance. These two are already installed in the house:

[REQUEST] Building a DIY smart curtain, help needed with matching the components. Posted: 23 Apr 2021 11:13 AM PDT Hey guys, after thinking and procrastinating on it for about a year, I got an arduino learning kit and now feel ready to build my own DIY smart curtain system. I have different types of curtains in my place, some are Grommet Curtains, and others are different. I'm planning to use the following parts and method to build a mechanism to move the curtains:
I'll run the timing belt along the length of my window at the top, using the pulleys to attach the two sides of the belt to both left/right curtains respectively. The pulley on one side of the window will be on the stepper motor (2A, 59 Ncm) which will run using a stepper motor driver connected to the ESP32 board.
Questions: On the electronics side, my curtains are not heavy so I think a NEMA 17 stepper motor with 2A current capacity should be enough but I'm having trouble deciding which stepper motor driver to use. I've read that A4988 won't give more than ~1.4A current and thus the motor won't run to its full potential. I'm confused between a DRV8825 and TB6600. Would the latter be an overkill? At some places in my house I have two curtain sets nearby, I can use this driver for two motors in those places. But which driver should I go for in case of a single motor.
On the pulley side, how do I mount the idler pulley on the free end of the curtains. The pulley on the motor side would go on the motor axle, but I'm not well versed with mechanical knowledge to know how to mount the same on the free end. I've found examples of smooth idler pulleys but I want to mount a teethed idler here. One idea I have is to somehow use shoulder screw with a nyloc nut on a simple angle mount or C servo bracket. Or I can use this guy's idea (loud music warning) of mounted bearings with a pipe/axle.
Lastly, any help on how to select which power source (power/voltage rating etc) would be very helpful. I haven't gone into schematics yet. If there's any other sub that will be more suitable for this, please let me know. Also, I'm in the Netherlands so most of the things you can buy online aren't available here (or at least that easily, because I have to find the technical names of the products in Dutch) Thank you. Prevent Fibaro FGS213/223/224 react on S1 (and S2) Posted: 23 Apr 2021 11:00 AM PDT Is that event possible? I've started using a few FGD213 and FGD212 for some automations and it works great. Now I need the input from 1 momentary switch and 2 outputs (bathroom lights and a fan), so I thought that a FGS223 or 224 was a good choice, but it doesn't look like I can prevent the relays react on the inputs. Also I thinks it seems odd that the relay is active when using the "S1 pressed 3 times"-scene - what a light show :D It may sound weird, but I doesn't necessarily want to turn on the relay when I push S1. Thanks. [link] [comments]
Why doesn't anyone make a smart switch with an outlet? Posted: 23 Apr 2021 02:31 PM PDT What am I missing? My bathroom has one of these and I want to replace it with something that will work with home automation. Can't find anything. [link] [comments]

How do I know the smart dimmer switch is compatible with my lights? Posted: 23 Apr 2021 01:26 PM PDT https://www.arani.ca/en_ca/amfile/file/download/file_id/281/product_id/843/ (last page) I have specific lights and my electrician sent a list of the preferred dimmer switches. The thing is that none of them are smart dimmers. I wasn't sure what specification doesn't a smart switch need [link] [comments] |
