Posted: 12 Aug 2020 07:17 AM PDT Hello Redditor's! I am going to attempt my first home DIY lighting project. I want to put strip LEDs around the perimeter of my media room, and I would also like to put them around the perimeter of my mother's room. I would like the ones in my media room to be able to change colors and go along with my music. The LED's I want to put in my mom's room will mainly be for her migraines, as green lighting is of benefit to her while having them but I'm sure she will enjoy vibing to the different light settings as well. I got on Amazon and there are so many different brands and options, it seems overwhelming. If anyone can suggest a certain brand or features that I should be looking for then it would be of great appreciation. The perimeter of my media room is 48 feet, and the perimeter of my mother's room is 42 feet. I read several comments and it seems like some have more LEDs on them which effect brightness as well as many other factors so I don't know where to start. Thanks for the help, everyone! How to Make Your Split Airconditioner Smarter? Posted: 13 Aug 2020 12:20 AM PDT I have several O' general AC split units. That uses an IR remote. I want to make it smarter. The problem is it's powered by a "heater" switch; and there aren't any electrical outlets beneath it that can be used to power smart devices (e.g Sensibo). Is there a way to circumvent the issue? Control a dumb ceiling fan with an RF remote control? Posted: 12 Aug 2020 06:51 PM PDT I have a 10+ year old Hampton Bay ceiling fan in my bedroom that I'd like to be able to control via IFTTT. It uses a wireless remote that looks like this. Really all I want to be able to do is turn the fan off at a set time because my wife always leaves it on when she leaves for work, but if I could also control it via Google Home that'd be a plus. Does anyone make some sort of module that can impersonate a wireless fan remote? [link] [comments]
Control a few outlets, no hub or wifi? Posted: 12 Aug 2020 07:33 PM PDT I'm looking for a way to remotely control two outlets in my home. They are in a hard to reach spot and a couple of vampire tech is connected to them. I'd like to be able to turn them off and on with my apple phone without using a hub and without using wifi. If I can't use a smartphone then I might consider one that uses a personal remote, but would much prefer a mobile version. I got some zwave outlets thinking that's what I needed but they need a hub FIRST to be programmed to use the mobile app, so it was a bust. [link] [comments]
Any way to automate Sonos Grouping? Posted: 12 Aug 2020 06:57 PM PDT I'd like to be able to automate Sonos grouping such that, if a motion sensor detects bathroom motion and the TV is on/playing, then I can have the Sonos in the bathroom get grouped to the playbar. Or if kitchen motion is detected while playing audio in the living room, my kitchen Sonos gets grouped in [link] [comments]
Installed 3 way Kasa smart switches. Now when one is turned on, the other Kasa switch turns off Posted: 12 Aug 2020 06:47 PM PDT Hi all - in the midst of a "smart home" Kasa light switch upgrade. I'm not new to replacing light switches/minor electrical work, so thought this wouldn't be hard at all. Well after the install, one of the switches that turns on a pair of can lights now turns off another Kasa 3 way switch that controls only one can light on the other side of the room. This is what is confusing me. In order to troubleshoot, I disconnected all the smart switches (2 total) that I installed (didn't touch any of the other switches). I then used my voltage tester to find the common wire. Switch 1 had a common wire not controlled by any of the other switches, Switch 2 also had a common wire with constant voltage not controlled by other switches. I then re-installed Switch 1 and used the voltage tester on the Switch 2 wires. Switch 2 still had constant voltage on the common wire with Switch 1 turned on and off so I then re-wired Switch 2. As soon as I wire up Switch 2, Switch 1 will then turn off Switch 2 when Switch 1's lights are turned on. If I remove Switch 2 again, the common wire then has voltage again. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong here? [link] [comments]
Posted: 12 Aug 2020 05:55 PM PDT I have a smartthings hub. Philips hue Hub. Hue sync. During peak hours I notice my lights n other items are muuuch slower. I have harder times connecting to the sync. Etc... I have my router provided by the ISP. If I plan on continuing to expand this home automation thing. Should I upgrade my router? If so. To what? Edit: I've noticed this pattern of "cannot connect" only when watching 4k UHD videos and peak hours. Watching YouTube music videos and such at regular resolution is seamless. Do I want a mesh? august smart lock setup question Posted: 12 Aug 2020 04:41 PM PDT I googled but didn't find an answer.... I have a gen1 august lock that I got from a buddy. He said it used to work.... I put in new batteries... it has a green light that flashes once. I can't get the august app to talk to it. It says: Scanning for your smart lock after a bit it says: No locks detected My phone and the lock are 6" apart. I don't have the lock mounted to the door.... does it have to be mounted for the app to connect to it? The status light is off... it does a long blink once when the 4th battery is installed. Is there a hard reset on the lock itself? Should there be more status light changes other than one long blink when I put in the battery. Anyone with august info that can give me some ideas on what to look at? - jack [link] [comments]
trying to setup a fairly complex trigger between Zoneminder and Google home hub Posted: 12 Aug 2020 04:27 PM PDT A little about my setup first... My network is segmented so that the security cameras don't have any access to the web. I'm running Zoneminder on an instance of ubuntu that is connected to the main VLAN through one NIC and the security camera VLAN connected network through another. Ideally I'll have one monitor to check for motion on the sidewalk to the door. If a person is walking up the sidewalk I'd like to trigger a script that would cast our doorbell camera (rtsp) feed to the google home hub. I think I've go the motion detection part down. The trigger to start the script shouldn't be problematic either. I did find a tutorial that theoretically would fill in the rest of the gaps. It can be found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/googlehome/comments/a7dfan/amcrest_camera_over_rtsp_to_hls_to_google_smart/ I'll substitute Zoneminder and a script to accomplish the tasks in place of the push2run portion of the tutorial. I was also able to install ffmpeg and nginx installed and working as an html server hosting the frontdoor cameras video (Checked via VLC). I was also able to get CATT installed and running. The problem is that when I try and get CATT to cast to the google home hub, the hub just displays a black screen with the cast icon in the middle. Has anyone else had the same kind of issues with casting to a home hub? If so how did you remedy them? Thanks so much, Loren [link] [comments]

Posted: 12 Aug 2020 03:49 PM PDT Hi! I'm 15, and I am on my PC in my room often. I like to listen to music, which can kinda be a problem, because I want to have both sides of my headset on so i can listen with good quality, but then I cant hear if my parents knock on my door, or call for my name. Is there some way I could make it so when someone knocks on my door, it puts a notification on my monitor or something like that? Another great part would be if it could somehow detect someone calling my name, or something like that? My parents know they should text when its time for dinner or if they need me, but they still don't. That second part isn't required, but would also be great. Any ideas on how to do this, or systems that can already do this? I greatly appreciate any help you could give me. Thank you! [link] [comments]

Low signal with router in closet - mesh vs access point vs other? Posted: 12 Aug 2020 11:03 AM PDT My WiFi router modem is in a closet with a door (and can't easily be moved unfortunately). The closet is more or less in the center of my house. The front and back of my house have poor/fair signal strength (still good upload/download speeds, just needs a bit of a boost). Which (mesh or access point or range extender) would help me improve signal strength at the front and back of my house? (Note: no wired Ethernet cables available at the front and back of my house, so looking either for something to connect directly to my modem by Ethernet cable directly or for a wireless option; home is one story around 1,400 sq ft; looking to spend under $250). Posted: 12 Aug 2020 08:59 AM PDT Hi All, I'm looking for a smart plug that doesn't require Internet connectivity that I can control via HTTP requests (i.e. cURL, not a browser). I found this post from 2 years ago which asked for the same thing , and to which people recommended the Sonoff S20, but it seems like that device isn't readily available any longer. Any suggestions on something relatively inexpensive that would fit the bill? [link] [comments]
