Home Automation My Tradfri lights will sometimes lose signal and other times my wifi has issues. I am starting to suspect I have a signal overlap issue. I was surprised by how many have a strong signal. Any thoughts on how I can really find out if signal congestion is really an issue with a ton of expense?

SmartThings e-mail support is utterly useless

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 06:44 AM PST

So far they've only told me shit I already know, they've asked me to reset my hub even though I explicitly told them I did that 5 times. The best part is they only seem capable of sending one reply per day. The first ticket response was at 1am PST. The second response was at 1030 pm pst, which I replied to immediately and haven't heard back from all night. Fucking useless!! /rant

Sorry, but this is pissing me off and I can't believe how terrible their support team is failing. This mid-00's Comcast bad.

    Feit WiFi Dimmer Switch Question

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 06:19 PM PST

I was at Costco tonight and saw a two pack of Feit WiFi dimmer switches on clearance for $30 ($15 a switch). I saw they said they supported 3 way switches so I decided to buy one to try it out.

Before I start digging into my wiring tomorrow has anyone used these before and knows if they are like the TP-Link 3 way smart switches in that you only need to replace one of the switches with a smart switch?

I've primarily been using TP-Link brand stuff as I already had a fair amount of Kasa enables things but at $15 a piece for 3 way dimmers if they work the same I may go clear the shelf tomorrow and start replacing all my switches with these.

Best option for white LED strips with color temperature adjustment that can integrate with Home Assistant?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 04:18 PM PST

To be honest I don't really care about RGB. I have a few already and 99% of the time they're just white except for holidays. I'm looking for a bunch of white led strips primarily so I can put them behind my washroom mirrors and integrate them with Home Assistant so they can respond to the PIR sensors I have there.

I'm just curious what my best options are. Preferably WiFi but I can do ZWave if they're a lot cheaper for example.

Tablet display to bring up security cams via automations

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 08:19 PM PST

I'm looking for a solution that will allow me to use a tablet display to show webcams based on sensor automation and voice command.

The system I have is a set of RTSP wifi cameras. I have sensors that push data via MQTT when front door motion is detected, so that's when I'd like to pop the display to show the front door webcam (audio and video prefer, but can live with just video). Then after some time passes, I want the display to go back to showing my home assistant dashboard.

I'd also like to be able to use voice to tell the display to show driveway, backyard, front door, etc.

I've considered a google home display w/ the Home Assistant Cast feature, but I'd like to use the display for Netflix, plex, other stuff, and the baked in Google Home is just too inflexible.

In general, I feel like there's a need for an Android control app. One that can be used to orchestrate what's displayed on screen, when to turn off the screen to avoid killing the display, and does some voice control. Not crazy voice control, just a limited set of commands I can pre-define.

    Hoping for some ideas.

[QUESTION] How hard would it be to build a horizontal curtain motor?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 06:38 PM PST

Please forgive my spelling English isn't my native language.

We have these 4 meter wide windows with giant horizontal curtains that fold like plisse curtains. There's no breaking mechanic so releasing the cord will make it unfold all the way. I need to tie the cord to a hook on the wall to make it sit at the height of my choosing.

I was wondering, how hard would it be to create like a small stepper motor or winch that lowers and pull the curtains and eventually combine that with google home or any digital assistent?

Can I change Wyze Bulb 'scenes' with google assistant's voice command?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 06:26 PM PST

Hi, very new to all this and the documentation seems a little lacking. I can't find confirmation anywhere that Wyze bulb scenes (where several settings for a group of bulbs are stored) can be triggered with the google assistant voice commands. It seems clear that Alexa can do this, but maybe not Google. Anyone running them this way?

I currently have 2 echo dots, and 3 home minis. Wtf can I do with all of them?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 05:17 PM PST

I have a fire tablet upstairs that controls the lights, adds to a shopping list via ifft, and allows us to video the security cameras.

1 home mini is downstairs and controls lights and the TV.

So.....what can I do with these other 4 devices? Anyone do something fun with them? They are currently in boxes in a closet.

    Motorising roman blinds

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 03:10 PM PST

Hi all, I am looking to automate my 2700x2100mm roman blinds. From the research I've done most systems work well with a chain but not so much with several cords. I need a smart pulley of some kind. The best I can come up with is a $150 small trailer winch that can be controlled by a remote control, but the control isn't smart and i'd need to build a unit that pushes the buttons. My other concern is that it'll be loud and id need to install it outside which is annoying but doable. I feel i am over thinking this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thinking about diving into SharpTools and mounting a Tablet but want some feedback first

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 12:21 PM PST

    Hi all,

I have been thinking about diving into SharpTools and mounting a tablet on the wall but I wanted to check in with you guys and see how you like it first (I really hate putting holes in the wall).

    Here are my constraints:

I have about 30 Lutron switches or plugs throughout the house, a smart lock, nest thermostat, nest protects, nest camera, ring cameras, echos, and a SmartThings Hub. I also have a harmony remote which I don't currently use.

My overall hope is to use it as a sort of security system by eventually adding a few motion sensors as well as door sensors and utilizing SmartThings to arm and disarm.

However, the reason I haven't taken the plunge yet is primarily because 99% of the items I'd be able to control are lights and those are already controlled via Alexa (or Pico Switch). Also, I really like the idea of accessing the Nest and Ring cameras through the dashboard but it doesnt look like thats possible.

For those that have mounted a tablet and used sharptools, do you think I'm in a position that would benefit from having a similar setup? What are you primiarily using it for? How has it benefited you in ways that voice commands/smart phone can't?

...Basically, I need a practicality pitch for my wife...

    Thanks in advance.

    Compatibility of GE Zigbee Dimmer?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 07:23 PM PST

Hope everyone's well. Undergoing some renovations and had some Commercial Electric 6in LED slim color changing recessed lighting placed throughout my condo. Unfortunately the contractor didn't really check in with me on the type of recessed lights before installing them.

He's now stating that my GE Zigbee Dimmer "may" be incompatible with those lights. I'm new to the smart home game and don't know much about wiring, but what could he mean by them not being compatible? Anybody have any experience with this combo? All help is appreciated

Combining dimmable single pole switch and 3 pole regular switch

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 12:25 PM PST

I bought the TP link dimmable switch and TP link 3 pole switch, which from what I've heard you only need 1 of the 3 pole switches to do a 3 way connection. So my question is if I combined the two switches, would I be able to dim the light and also have it work on two switches? As soon as they're delivered I'm testing it out but I want to check my logic here.

Looking for a wifi or ethernet wall socket that can take on/off commands from a Linux PC on the LAN, hopefully just local, no gateway

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 11:25 AM PST

All the management I do on my network is through a VPN, so the last thing I want is to port forward something or another to the network, looking for a EU wall socket that's dead simple but can take commands from a Linux PC I'm SSH'd into on the network.

Recommend my a Tuya compatible outdoor motion sensor or motion sensor light

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 08:54 PM PST

I'm fairly new to home automation but very comfortable with electronics, networking etc.

I've decided to start outfitting my house with some Tuya based products. My limited experience makes me think for what I'm trying to do it's the most compatible, compliant (I'm not in the USA) and least buggy.

I need to change one of my security lights outside. I've done a bit of Googling but I'm interested in what people recommend as a outdoor security light that's Tuya compatible.

A retailer here does one, however it only allows you to turn the light on or off, ideally I'd want to be able to adjust the motion sensitivity, or have it send a prompt if the light was turned on (so for example then I can say "if the sensor light turns on, then switcht these other two lights on as well).

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/arlec-smart-20w-security-light-with-movement-activated-sensor-grid-connect_p0117296

If it's a light it needs to be 220v / 50hz compatible, or if it's a sensor only it can be battery driven if need be (but mains powered is prefered)

    Hikvision stream on Chromecast

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 04:54 AM PST

So i have a few devices with chromecast.

And basicly what i want to achieve is: "Hey google play camera X on tv X"

So i basicly read that i can automise this using a raspberry pi which redirects the RPST stream to the chromecast with VLC.

However, how do i make a google assistant question activate a command on my raspberry pi?

Or is there a better way to make it load live camera feed?

(I basicly want to use this with my google home mini's to view the camera feed on my TV)

    Hubless Dashboard?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 06:52 PM PST

I love the thought of a wall mounted dashboard, however, so far I have done everything with no hub. I have wifi bulbs, wifi switches, Wyze cams and sensors, and a 10 camera hardwired DVR.

I do have a couple tablets I can use for dashboards, would like to just see some cameras all the time, and maybe weather and clickable routines trigger if I dont want to speak to Alexa.

    Any thoughts?

    [Question] New Construction Minimum

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 05:23 PM PST

I am at the genesis of my first new home build. The lowvotage/audio/cable pre-wire is being done by a company called Connect One. I don't get to choose who does this part of the build or do any wiring myself (I am assuming this is the normal practice for these national builders).

What would you consider paying for and what could I hold off and live without or run myself.

    • $91 Cat5e price per drop
    • $91 RG6 price per drop
    • $99 POE camera wire price per drop
    • $231 Audio prewire priced per pair with volume control
    • $565 Dolby Atmos media room prewire
    • $231 Multi-media drop (2 Cat5e 1 RG6)
    • $99 Conduit run (orange corrugated tubing)

    Edit - Single story home

    Dimmable smart socket?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 03:01 PM PST

Are dimmable sockets a thing? I can't seem to find them.

I have a lamp that takes a R7S bulb and has a dimmer switch on it. Currently it's on a regular smart socket but I'd like to be able to control the brightness as well. I can't find smart R7S bulbs anywhere so wondered if I could do it from the socket but I'm not having any luck there either.

Any ideas? I'm in UK if that limits options?

    notifi doorbell - any access?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 09:49 AM PST

Has anyone found a way to access video locally from the heath-zenith notifi doorbell camera?

I had a ring, and hated it. I replaced it with the notifi doorbell which I love (I know amazon reviews hate it but I think it's great). It has decent video in the app, and I get push and email notifications and video clips with no subscription, which I'm a big fan of.

    and it was super cheap.

I'd imagine there would be a way to access the video locally, but I can't figure it out. Anyone have any success with this? I'd love local video access and any kind of local integration with alerts.

I figure I'm SOL, but can't hurt asking.

Raspberry Pi and ZigBee in the UK

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 12:21 PM PST

I'm getting into home automation, and likely to go for openhab or home assistant running on Raspberry Pi 4. If I was in the US I could buy a combined Zwave and ZigBee dongle but that won't work in the UK and I can't find an equivalent model. So if I want ZigBee and Zwave I need to USB dongles.

I found a Zwave one with reviews saying it works with Hass.io. I haven't been able to find a ZigBee one. Can anyone recommend?

Edit: I have no problem finding the information about software or configuration for ZigBee on the Raspberry Pi. My problem is that I don't have a radio, so I'm looking for specific hardware recommendations that are available in the UK so I can add ZigBee to my Raspberry Pi.
