How possible/difficult would it be control a smart home with a Sonic Screwdriver or magic wand?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 12:11 AM PDT

I've seen smart homes controlled by tablets, but I want to know your ideas on how to manage all features of a smart home with The Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver or a magic wand if that's your thing.

Basically I want to activate smart devices by pointing a stick at them. Bonus if different gestures did different things. Like swiping while pressing a button makes a light change color.

Off the top of my head I could think of using IR with different IR receivers located near lightbulbs, switches, panels etc.

If you were to build this, how would you go about it?

I want my coffee brewer to turn on when I wake up (without alarm trigger)

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 09:23 PM PDT

I figured that I'd like my coffee brewer to turn on as soon as I wake up, and the only action that's 100% tied with me waking up is grabbing my phone and start scrolling into whatever content app I feel like (reddit, twitter, instagram). So i figured, is there any way to automate my phone as a trigger for my coffee brewer? Maybe checking the screen time and check if it turns on after a set hour, or check my social media's activity? Or is there a simpler way?

I own an amazon alexa, and my coffee brewer is plugged into an Amazon's smart plug. The problem with that is that I can't control the smartplug from the HomeKit app (fuck you Apple). I know I can do it by voice command and just say "Alexa, turn on the coffee brewer", but well, automating is half the fun.

    Temperature monitoring ideas

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 08:14 PM PDT

It gets pretty hot on the second floor of my house so I'm looking to automate a few window fans to exhaust the warm air and hopefully draw cooler air from downstairs. Since I'm pretty new to HA, I thought I would ask here before buying some custom solution.

How could I connect a set of thermometers upstairs and downstairs (or indoors/outdoors) to an amazon echo or custom controller to make this work?

    Trouble shooting Geeni smart plug

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 07:49 PM PDT

I have a Geeni smart bulb that's never been an issue. Just bought two smart plugs and cannot get either to connect to the app/network. I've tried all 3 connection methods.

The device acts like its connected ( Blinking stops, device turns off, turning it back on gives a solid light.) but it happens halfway through the apps connecting process and the app finally finish then says can't connect.

    Want to replace apartment doorbell

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 07:11 PM PDT

Live in an apartment (co-op building in NYC) with this doorbell chime/viewer: https://i.imgur.com/JcSaoW9.jpg

Don't really like the mechanical chime sound, but I also don't want to modify the doorbell "frame" outside if possible. Any ideas?

If not - anything that I can maybe stick next to it to use instead?

EDIT: A second thing I forgot to mention was that it's extremely hard to look through the viewer - super dark and grainy. Would replacing the viewer itself help or are they all like this? Anything I can do regarding video?

Thanks to a post by u/Lev09, I just completed a quarantine project with WLED

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 06:20 PM PDT

u/Lev09 made a post a couple of days ago asking how to DIY an ambiance wall-wash type lamp.

I became so enamored with the idea, that I designed my first ever 3D objects in order to put one together.

The project uses standard aluminum extrusion available from the local hardware store, with 3/4"(19mm) square extrusions for the floor supports and a 1"(27mm) approximate width C channel for the vertical LED channel. All items are press-fit and very snug.

I am running WLED on a Wemos D1 Mini clone with 70 WS2812b LEDs (60LEDs per Meter strip) and a 2 amp USB power supply until my 5V 2.5amp barrel connector power supplies come in.

Creating a home automation system that is security first, what should I build?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 05:28 PM PDT

Ok so I have a raspberry pi4 just sitting around, I want to use it as a hub or server to essentially act as a home security controller to start.

I have researched a couple different ways to do it, with the first task I want it for. Google assistant voice command - arm wyze door sensors - if tripped, turns on wyze switch that has a siren attached.

Google assistant voice command to disarm this rule.

Flash it Android and use it to run Tasker, watch for a notification and then fire a webhook - IFTTT to react and turn the switch. Seems like a lot of jumping for a essentially simple task.

I am not familiar with smart things enough to know if I could build that in there.

I have seen some talk of rednode?

    Any assistance would be great.

    I'd appreciate any feedback.

    Debating Smart Cams

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 05:26 PM PDT

I've done a decent amount of research on several of the major smart cam ecosystems, specifically Ring, Arlo, and Nest and came to the conclusion that out of these, 4 Arlo Pro 3 and a Arlo Video Doorbell would fit my needs the best. Nest's devices were too expensive for what you get, and Ring doesn't seem to play well with the Google Assistant. I'm also aware that the Arlo Video Doorbell is only recently rolling out support for the Google Home Hub. Am I making a mistake going with Arlo? I see many people on this subreddit suggesting brands like Hikvision or Reolink, but haven't seen any explanation for why these are better than a solution like Arlo. I would really appreciate any advice.

    Outdoor Audio Control

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 04:42 PM PDT

Obligatory, sorry if this is a dumb question.

I want to install speakers on my deck and around the pool and control them from my iPhone.

I would rather not stream from my iPhone, but rather be able to switch streams or radio stations.

Is there anything that performs well as a receiver? We have a couple Apple TV's but without seeing the video output on the remote app switching things would be blind.

    Zigbee2MQTT with Yale touchscreen lock

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 09:01 AM PDT

I'm using this Yale touchscreeen deadbolt in the zigbee model.

    https://www.zigbee2mqtt.io/devices/YRD226_246_TSDB.html

It's supported by Z2M, and should report lock status and battery. I was able to join it and lock/unlock remotely. But I get a timeout message from Z2M saying the device didn't respond back.

    zigbee2mqtt3/0xxxxxxxxxx/set LOCK zigbee2mqtt3/bridge/log {"type":"zigbee_publish_error","message":"Publish 'set' 'state' to '0x000d6f000f76c2e9' failed: 'Error: Timeout - 28263 - 1 - 157 - 257 - 11 after 15000ms'","meta":{"friendly_name":"0xxxxxxxxxx"}}

I can see and lock doing the lock function, but Z2M coordinator isn't seeing the response back. I'm also not getting any battery statuses for that device when I subscribe to the topic.

It's like the Yale lock is listening, but never talking back. I've unjoined and joined a few times, same behavior.

    I'm using Z2M with CC1352P-2.

Any ideas? I've never seen a zigbee device that "works", but doesn't send status responses back to Z2M.

    Motorized opening of wall vent.

I am looking for a motorized solution for my wall vents, many motors exists, but the seem to be tuned towards more full size ventilation systems with wall vents the valve is actually in the room and there isn't that much room for a motor. I am talking about a vent like this:

What in wall tablet recommendations are there for a new construction home?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 05:33 AM PDT

I'm building my new home, yay!

I want to add about 3 tablets:

    • kitchen
    • living / entrance area
    • master bedroom

    2 other requirements are:

    1. I need to use something like fully kiosk as I use home assistant in my house
    2. I want a case for the tablet to make it look real polished.
    3. lock tablet to more than 1 app

    I know typical options are

    1. Fire Tablet
    2. Android Tablet
    3. ipad (refurb)
    4. any PoE options to add here?

The issues with option 1. Are to use something like fully kiosk you need root access to the fire TV so if anyone has a good guide to rooting a 10" tablet for fire TV then I'm open for that. I know there is a Versa or VESA something like this brand that makes nice covers for in wall tablets but it is only for the Fire and Galaxy tabs apart from iPads.

With iPads there is iPort which is so dope but they are expensive and the iPad while it can be configured to a single app which I found this tutorial on but see the requirement 3 is not met because you lock it to a single app and I want to use sonos or Spotify app as well.

    any thoughts?

Where is the other end to this Inwteon switch?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 11:10 AM PDT

I have a simple Insteon switch on our deck, existed when we bought the house:

    http://cache.insteon.com/documentation/2342-x42-en.pdf

It used to turn on the lights, but has stopped working, even after recharging it. I know it must send RF signals to another Insteon device that controls the lights. And I know it's a hard question to answer without being in my house, but any ideas where I would go looking for it? Or what it would look like? There is no other switch that controls the lights as far as I know. Thank you!

New rental - I'd like to automate this lock https://imgur.com/a/DFqr6MR

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 11:03 AM PDT

    imgur link again here: https://imgur.com/a/DFqr6MR

Swapping this lock out entirely is not an option, but I've got hubs and know-how and happy to consider anything I won't have to code myself.

I know August makes this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0752V8D8D/ and that may be an option, but the lock on my door protrudes from that plate and isn't flush w the door, and I'm concerned it will prevent me from attaching

Any clever/creative ways you're willing to point me at would be very much appreciated!

    Automatic tray refill

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 10:57 AM PDT

Hey guys, I'm currently building a new indoor growing setup for my carnivorous plants and wanted some help figuring out my watering regime. I'm away most of the week and i'm home only during weekends and sometimes a weekend once every two weeks.

So currently I have a submerged water pump which runs once a week for 5 minutes (via digital outlet timer because it had the lowest time resolution of minutes compared to those mechanical outlet timers which have time resolution of 15 min) filling a very large tray with pots to about a hight of 1-2cm. The water evaporates after about 2-4 days depending on the weather leaving some of the smaller pots dry.

I wanted to find a way to make the pump more automated and accurate than what it is now. I want the tray to be filled up to a certain hight and refilled only about 1-2 days after all the water has evaporated.

The only solution I've thought about is using 2 sensors and a relay which will let the pump fill the water to a certain point, and fill the tray 2 days after the 2nd sensor (which is on the bottom of the tray) will indicate the tray is empty. BUT, the water i'm using is distilled water which if I remember correctly, doesn't conduct electricity so the sensors could be useless

Is there a product which does this kind of thing? or will i have to use my rusty electronics skills for that haha

Best robot vacuum cleaner for lots of pet hair?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 10:44 AM PDT

I have 6 pets. 5 cats and a double coated dog, so they're constantly shedding.

I recently purchased a house and making it a smart home is my dream. My family is offering to buy us things for the house, one of which is a smart vacuum.

I have only two limitations and that it has to be available to purchase at BestBuy (Mom has a BB card that she wants to) and works with Google.

    Suggestions? Thanks!

Kasa HS210 strange behavior - help?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 10:37 AM PDT

I think I have everything wired correctly. Here is the situation. 3-way setup. Switch 1 is a non-smart switch (keeping it that way because it is combo dimmer and on/off). Switch 2 is kasa hs210. When I turn on the kasa switch, it makes a clicking sound and the lights turn on and off at about 1 second intervals. The WiFi light flashes orange. It gets stuck in this flashing/flickering/clicking state. Sometimes after a minute of doing this, it will then stay on and act normally. If I try to shut it off in this state, it doesn't respond. Reset button doesn't work.

If I turn on switch 1 after I turn on switch 2, and then turn off switch 1, switch two is on and the lights are on. Switch 2 will then turn off manually or by Alexa command. I just can't get it to turn on normally.

Anyone know what is going on? Is this a sign of a wiring error? Or some fundamental problem in the design of this system or setup?
