Posted: 07 Jun 2020 07:28 PM PDT Finally dove into the HA pool and this was my first attempt at a project . I got everything today, but wanted to see how it would go before I purchased more. I've always wanted the lighting under my cabinets, and after being inspired by so many creative posts on this sub I decided to take it a step further. Need a little smart switch (no neutral) guidance please Posted: 07 Jun 2020 06:28 PM PDT Ok, I promise I've done a ton of research into options but the varying responses and differing uses and evolving products in tutorials still hasn't lead me to be confident in knowing what to purchase. Long story short - what are my cheapest reliable options for a smart switch that does not require a neutral wire that plays nicely with Home Assistant? It's just one switch that turns on/off two light bulbs, which I replaced with two LED smart bulbs. The relevant factors:
Currently I think my only option is the Sonoff T4EU1C, but I'm not positive on this. I'm also not positive whether I need to flash or not with the T4EU1C. It gets confusing pretty quickly trying to differentiate between all the different Sonoff models new and old.[link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Jun 2020 03:26 PM PDT Hey guys! New to the automation thing. Picked up some string lights (link) on Amazon for a deal, as well as a power supply (12v, 10a), a WiFi Controller from HaoDeng (MagicHome Pro), and a Google Home Mini. Here's a few photos of the line! The lights look great and voice controlling them works wonderfully. I'm so happy. BUT! Now I want more, because two rolls weren't enough to cover the room. I think I need a total of 4. I'm not SUPER worried about voltage drop, as the difference over this 10m strip is minimal even comparing the ends next to each other off the wall. But it is there. I'd rather connect both ends to a power supply if possible. The end as it is in picture is just loose, nothing connected but a 5 pin female head. However, every source I find for feeding power in along the path or end to end is using plain white LEDs, not RGB or especially RGBW (I even think mine are technically GRBW according to the wires, but it lights up correctly when I give a command). Does anyone here know how I could wire two more rolls of lights into this loop? I'd prefer not to spend another $60 on extending this by buying another controller and power supply. Smart thermostat to monitor infrequently used room. Posted: 07 Jun 2020 08:35 PM PDT I've got a small detached room which is used rarely by visiting guests. My AC has 6 zones, each with their own thermostat, including said room. I leave the room at 80+ (no reason to run AC more frequently if its not inhabited). However, when I have company over and they push the temperature down to their desired value, my damper for that zone sometimes gets stuck closed. This doesn't happen frequently, but when it does, the entire evaporator coil becomes a chunk of ice and I'm spending the next 2 hours without AC while the fan de-ices it. I'm looking for a smart thermostat for ONLY the guest room. Specifically I want it to send a notification if the temperature doesn't fall within 10 minutes of AC start in that room, or alternatively to have a set temperature alarm if the room temp is ever 2 degrees above the set cool temp. Either of these would save me so much hassle, since I would know right away when there's an issue, rather than waiting until the next day for my guests to tell me that the AC works but is running all the time and isn't quite as cool as they'd like (because its frozen). Posted: 07 Jun 2020 04:47 PM PDT Hello, I recently installed my Yale lock. It is one that comes with an August bridge. YRD226-CBA619 I THOUGHT there was a way to give people temporary pins, and assign pins in the app, like with the Amazon one, however the only app that i am seeing works with it is the August app, and that just lets people access through app. There are several Yale apps, not sure which (if any) I am supposed to use. I was thinking this lock is one that would notify me who entered via who's pin was used, and such. Maybe I got the wrong thing. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Thoughts, suggestions? General Questions. Posted: 07 Jun 2020 02:26 PM PDT From what Iv understood so far, Z-Wave/Zigbee allows for creating a mesh and reducing WiFi bandwidth. I assume most people run a few WiFi devices and most Z devices. Z is also local. This is probably what I'm going to do. 1) Any general benefit of running z-wave vs Zigbee? I understand Zwave can use a 2.4ghz band, which is faster but may interfere with WiFi/microwave. Does the speed make a difference with Z devices? Zigbee is open source, I'm kinda leaning that direction. Any reason not to? 2) What's the best hub? Im planning on using Home Assistant but mainly because it's what I came across first and the open source compatability. I want to do things local but I want to be able to view camera feeds and control switches remotely from anywhere. I wanted to do local for security purposes, am I contradicting myself? Or can you keep almost everything local and have some remote access to control things? 3) Do I still need separate bridges depending on the devices I have? In particular, the Kwikset door locks I wanted have kevo built in, but require a kevo bridge. Can Z override this requirement? Can HA? I hope I don't need like 6-7 bridges to run the different types of devices I'd like to use. [link] [comments]
Getting started with HA - hardware suggestions Posted: 07 Jun 2020 04:32 PM PDT Hey everyone, useful sub here, I was hoping for some tips: Currently I'm running Home Assistant + Node-red on a linux laptop (headless server) in my closet. I have two smart plugs (Wyze) for a light/AC, a couple of old Android phones, a Wyze cam and some Chromecast audio pucks. We live in a 5th wheel with mobile/tethered data, so I want to do as much, if not all connectivity locally, without relying on internet access as is the case with the Wyze plugs. (That said, I did some sneaky reverse SSH tunnels with a nginx reverse proxy/SSL so I can access HA remotely and securely) After doing some research, I realized that I probably would be best served with a Zigbee based system, or potentially z-wave. Goals: - 3-4 plugs (I like the $10/plug for my Wyze plugs, power consumption is a nice feature but I don't want to pay $25/plug, I heard I may be able to flash the Wyze plugs...) - 1-2 buttons - Possibly some cameras ( accessible via HA) - Lights (Relay for existing 12v lights or Zigbee LED controller?) - Maybe temperature sensors - Potentially a relay/linear actuator for a chicken coop door All that said, I am looking for some suggestions on where to get started with hardware. I'm not sure if I should go with the Zigbee USB stick and a random assortment of devices, try to find a kit/pack (cheaper?), maybe go with a wifi hub instead of the USB stick, etc. Any tips, suggestions or links are welcome! Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Jun 2020 04:27 PM PDT My app is showing my garage door opener offline for about 5 hours now. I confirmed it's connected to WiFi still so I'm wondering if it's them? Anybody else? Tried power cycling etc. [link] [comments]

Posted: 07 Jun 2020 07:34 PM PDT So I've run into a scenario (needless details omitted) where a room has a ceiling fan with a light that is not controlled as desired. This is not MY house so some of the variables are different from normal. The light is controlled via a switch in a double gang box The second gang is a rheostat "dimmer" knob that controls the fan Across the room on the other side is a second knob in a single gang box but without any light control. The house has no common, having been built in the late 60s, and the occupant is not a tech geek. Is there a way to update the controls without rewiring the whole thing, preferably with local control and without an expensive hub, in a way that's accessible to a older occupant without my having to play "tech support" six times a week? New house, need to program Vivint thermostat and need help please. Posted: 07 Jun 2020 07:15 PM PDT I moved into my home in February, and the thermostat has been driving me nuts ever since. I don't subscribe to Vivint, but it was in the house when I moved in. I cannot figure out how to get the thermostat to actually stay where I put it, or to program it for my needs and not the previous owners. I would be very grateful if someone could help me. The house was built in 2009, and I assume that the system was put in when it was built. Thank you! [link] [comments]
How do people keep Windows 10 automation servers up and running? Posted: 07 Jun 2020 07:10 PM PDT I really hate how windows updates happen now with no way to actually stop them. I have a HomeSeer instance running on Windows and it's been impossible dealing with the computer restarts. Homeseer needs to be run by administrator so just putting it as a startup application doesn't work. Has anybody else found a good solution either by completely blocking the Windows updates (doing them manually occasionally) or with some good option to start up all your applications and appliances? Can I pair Ring Alarm contact sensors with a non-Ring Z-Wave hub? Posted: 07 Jun 2020 02:48 PM PDT I have some spare Ring Alarm contact sensors from an installation at a different location and I want to try to use them at our home. Can the contact sensors be paired to, for instance, a Z-Wave USB dongle and use with Home Assistant? The Ring contact sensors have the Z-Wave Plus logo on them but I can't seem to find a pairing button anywhere. Thanks! [link] [comments]
ELI5: RTL-SDR dongle vs. Sonoff RF Bridge Posted: 07 Jun 2020 11:34 AM PDT I'm a little fuzzy on the applications of each, and the capabilities they may share in common. My intent is to integrate existing 433MHz devices in to Home Assistant running on a Raspberry Pi 3B – that is, reading the signals from a weather station, door sensors, etc. For this I have a Sonoff RF Bridge en route that I'll be flashing with Tasmota and tying in to HA with MQTT. I would have preferred to keep it simple with 433-only (with no reliance on WiFi) but fellow Redditors appear to sing the praises of HA/MQTT/Sonoff RF so I went for it. However for another project I would like to build a radio receiver for shortwave, police scanning, AM/FM, etc. with a lengthy antenna mounted in the attic. It looks like I'll be ordering a RTL-SDR R820T2 dongle for this. Would the capabilities of this tuner make the Sonoff Bridge redundant in the Home Assistant project? I intend to have one Pi dedicated to HA and another Pi dedicated to SDR reception, so not sure if it's a moot point? I'm a bit of a noob in both arenas so be gentle... [link] [comments]
Smart plug with detailed real time energy monitoring Posted: 07 Jun 2020 10:27 AM PDT Hey guys, I'm looking for a smart plug that's controlled by an app just like every smart plug on the planet. However, the energy monitoring is always lacking a real time graph - sure most show the current value, but graphs are only available for day/week/month/... I want to see how much (not averaged) power my sound system is using whilst playing a song. Does anyone have or know a plug with the (not really that difficult to implement) feature? Bonus points if it's available in the EU... Thanks [link] [comments]
I need something that will notify me when there's movement in another room. Posted: 07 Jun 2020 03:54 AM PDT I have 2 cats and due to medical reasons one is very heavy footed. I only have room for a single large litter tray which they both use fine. The problem is, if I don't clean up the litter tray after each use, the heavy footed cat sometimes gets his feet dirty on the other cats leavings, which isn't great and tracks all over the place. What I want is a movement sensor in the litter tray room and some sort of visual cue in another room to let us know that the litter tray needs a clean. A bulb or smart plug turning on, Google home reminder, something like that. Not a phone reminder because it's not always me in the house, needs to be something visual. Why ideas how to do this easily and preferably cheaply? I have an IKEA tradfri gateway and multiple Google home devices, no other automation gateways. [link] [comments]
Security Camera with Local Storage Posted: 07 Jun 2020 11:18 AM PDT Looking for an affordable security camera with local storage only. WiFi is not an option. Using for work in a location where internet, phone service, or WiFi is unavailable. Tried to use a Wyze cam with micro sd storage to no avail. Any suggestions? [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Jun 2020 10:41 AM PDT We recently moved into a new to us home. The previous owners paid for a fluent home alarm system. When they left Fluent removed the previous system but they left 3 recessed door sensors. A quick Google search shows they are a 2GIG DW20R recessed door sensor. https://www.alarmgrid.com/products/2gig-dw20r-345 I have purchased the HomeSeer HomeTroller Zee S2 controller and a handful of door/window sensors for my basement windows and doors. Is there a way to reuse these 2GIG sensors as opposed to the surface mount sensors I purchased? Or is there a sensors I can buy to put into the same hole as the 2GIG sensors that will work with the HomeSeer controller I already have? [link] [comments]
Driveway Gate remote operating / monitoring solution? Posted: 07 Jun 2020 09:47 AM PDT Hi Folks, Looking for advice on a solution for my driveway gate. This morning I forgot to close the gate before heading to work and the dogs almost got out during their post-breakfast pee break. The general idea of what I'm looking for is something that I can link to my Google Home to open and close the gate, as well as having it notify us when the gate has been open for too long. The gate opener is an Eagle brand, and far as I know it won't work with something like MyQ because it's a horizontal gate rather than a vertical garage door (although our garage door opener is a Chamberlain and would work with it...). We currently just use the two button remotes in our cars to open the garage and the gate. I'm fairly tech savvy so I don't mind DIYing something, but if there's an product that already fills this niche I'd be pretty interested as well. [link] [comments] |
