Can I convert a fan from pull string to smart switch? Posted: 20 Jun 2020 11:46 AM PDT Apologies in advanced as I have no idea what I'm doing with electricity. I'm trying to make it so my fan is controlled by a smart switch (Caseta Lutron) that requires a neutral wire but currently is controlled by pull string. (House built in 60s) This is the picture of all the black and white wires coming together inside the switch box. Which I've never seen before, but my guess is they're using it as a junction? https://i.imgur.com/y3Aj2An.jpg This picture shows the wire that is coming down to the switch that controls the light in the fan but not the fan itself. I believe it is 14/3 because it has black, red, white, and ground. But could be wrong of course! Can I use this wire to control both the light and the fan? How would this be configured? I'm installing a new fan too, so if I need to configure wiring on the fan side that is not a problem! https://i.imgur.com/gHOCPcR.jpg Thank you! [link] [comments]
Best solution for smart, RGBW office lighting? Posted: 20 Jun 2020 03:10 AM PDT Or at least something with temperature control. We're moving our office into a new unit soon and I want to have a bit more control over the lighting. It's got a suspended grid ceiling which you'd generally put panel lights into but the options there are relatively thin (there are some RGBW panels but they're either too expensive or likely to die very quickly) RGBW would mostly be for our "showroom" type area, but I'd like temperature control for the main work area too. Anyone know of any options? I know Hue do a few linear bar lights that we could mount on the ceiling if we remove the grid, but that's quite an expensive solution as they run like £200 per light. Could I potentially get away with using LED strips in lengths of diffusers and using them as linear bar lights perhaps? Or am I barking up the wrong tree completely and should just keep it simple? Posted: 21 Jun 2020 12:39 AM PDT Hi guys. So I'm gutting my house and really want to automate it while all the drywall is open. Is there any cool ideas of things to install besides the standard security camera, doors, lights, garage door? Is there any one system that is better than the other? I'm really new at this. I'm not the biggest fan of cloud based electronics and would prefer to grab raspberries so I have control of the stuff. But let me know [link] [comments]

Posted: 20 Jun 2020 08:21 PM PDT Hello gang, Just curious to what kind of project boxes people are using for the DIY home tech. So far, the most flexible and inexpensive box I've found have been these guys: https://imgur.com/PGHxZ3h Home Deport sells them as "1-Gang 12 cu in. New Work Gray Non-Metallic Handy Box" They only run $1, and if you want a cover that's another $0.75. So far I haven't found anything else better at that price point, and am wondering if anyone else has. I use them with ESPHome, and they are roomy enough that I can shove a mini NodeMCU (Before you ask, here), multiple sensors and a fairly fat battery in it, then I paint the cover the same color as the wall and just push them inside - no need to worry about them falling out. Pretty much every single other box I've looked at costs a lot more in comparisons. But I am on the look out for enclosures that rectangular so love some links! [link] [comments]

Lutron Caseta light switches - standard wall plate? Posted: 20 Jun 2020 04:29 PM PDT Hi, i have a 3 gang light switch unit that I want to put Caseta switches in. Do the standard wall plates work with these units? I'm wanting these switches: I want to use a 3 switch plate. Thanks! [link] [comments]
120VAC to 12VDC converter for electronics Posted: 20 Jun 2020 12:22 PM PDT Howdy, I want to have a 12V quick wire bank to power a couple LED's and electronics around the house but I only have one 120VAC to 12VDC converter. Can I use that single 12V coming from the converter to power 4 to 8 of these electronics in parallel? I looked around the web for something similar but could not find anything and I'm just now getting in to this kind of stuff since I just got my first home so I'm hoping some one here could share some knowledge! Best Smart Plug with Energy Monitoring for washer machine? Posted: 20 Jun 2020 12:17 PM PDT I'm trying to find the best energy monitoring smart plug that I can use with while I'm washing machine and gas dryer. the idea is that there is power draw when the washing machine is running, but when it stops, the power draw should drop. I want to use IFTTT to notify me when the power draw drops indicating that the washing machines cycle is done. Can anyone help? [link] [comments]

IFTT compatible/API Controlled IR blaster? Posted: 20 Jun 2020 11:36 AM PDT Just about to grab a Smartlife IR blaster when Reddit (seriously, this site becomes more useful each day) popped up in the search results after I was figuring out if IFTT would give me enough flexibility for what I'll want to do, pointed out they've actually killed all support. So, with this, does anyone know any good IR blasters that I can now get that'll have either an API or IFTT integration? My goal is to use my self-built show planner to change the channels when a show I want to watch is about to start. I.e. change to bbc 1 at 8pm as blah blah is about to start. It'll be nifty to get going but it does all rely on that IR blaster. Hopefully there's others that have had similar issues and have found a good product! [link] [comments]
Posted: 20 Jun 2020 11:21 AM PDT After lurking for some time, I'm ready to start shopping, but I'm not sure where to look. I have two lamps with knobs that are tricky to reach that I would like to control using my Android phone. I was thinking that I could use some smart plugs to accomplish this. However, being rather security-conscious (or paranoid), I don't want them to connecting anywhere other than my local network. Schedules, energy monitoring, etc are optional, and I'd prefer wifi vs other standards so I don't have to buy a hub. I'm open to other solutions or any suggestions. Thanks! Edit: Forgot to mention that I've looked around, but it's hard to know if they will work without external connections. [link] [comments]
Posted: 20 Jun 2020 02:41 PM PDT Anyone know of a good outdoor motion sensor that has long-range to detect motion in a hillside around 50' radius. Preferably battery powered and compatible with hubitat. Also looking for an accompanying light. [link] [comments]
Feit Electric Smart WiFi Bulb NFC Tags Posted: 20 Jun 2020 12:29 PM PDT Does anyone know if there are any NFC Tags and accompanying apps that I can get for my Feit electric smart WiFi bulbs so I just have to tap to turn my lights on and off? Thanks 🙏 [link] [comments]
Posted: 20 Jun 2020 02:17 AM PDT Hi, I have a pretty basic setup. I've been following this sub for quite a while and honestly don't understand most of it! I have google home, hue and some various cheap smart plugs. I connected my bedroom fan to a smart plug so I could turn it off in the night if I got cold without getting up. When I turn the fan off, it turns the Xbox on. My absolute basic knowledge tells me that it must be sending the same signal as the wireless controller but I was hoping someone knew of a simple fix? Thank you! [link] [comments]
Intercept and/or replicate RF signal to automate ventilation unit Posted: 20 Jun 2020 02:12 AM PDT For my new appartment I have a ventilation unit (Zehnder Comfofan S). I can buy an additional RF receiver and remote to control the unit other places in the appartment. However, I would like to integrate it in my smart home, to turn on when I'm in the shower or when I'm cooking. To automate this I have this idea, but I'm not sure how to execute it. I would buy the RF receiver and install it. I would create automations based that would send a signal to this receiver, to turn on/off the ventilation unit. What hardware would I need to send such a signal? And how do I find out what signal is send by the original remote contol? I figure I need to use the original remote and intercept it's signal, and them somehow replicate it. But I'm not sure how to do something like this, and what hardware I would need. Does anyone have any experience with this? [link] [comments]
Smoke/CO sensor for Ring system (UK) Posted: 20 Jun 2020 03:52 AM PDT I recently purchased a ring system and wanted to also hook up some smoke detectors/Co sensors to it. I saw in the US you can get a combined smoke/Co listener for the ring system, unfortunately I am in the UK and can't find anyway to order them to the UK. Does anyone know any good compatible sensors j could purchase. (I beleive ring is Z wave compatible) [link] [comments]
