Help with automatic watering for 20+ plants Posted: 19 Jun 2020 09:42 AM PDT Hehey, I want to build an automatic watering thingie for work. We have about 20+ (up to 30?) plants up on a wooden/metal grate, (~1x5 meters in size) in the ceiling about 3 meters up. It's pretty, sure, but the dude who made it has quit and watering it is a pain in the butt. I was thinking about a gravity fed watering system of sorts. Moisture sensors for each plant, hooking them up with Arduino/Raspberry/blabla and relays that turn on https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000185985203.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.813e55feLloGgo As a water tank I think something like this: https://www.tanks-direct.co.uk/water-tanks/water-storage-tanks/10-50-litre-water-tanks/30-litre-water-tank-upright.html could work. I could "hide" it on a beam about 1.5 meters above the plants. It would be filled with a DIY tool when needed. Would it work? The solenoid valve from AliExpress says "Please note it is not suitable for use with gravity fed systems". How come? I am a noob when it comes to gardening. I just want to program something fun that will save time. Do you know of a cheap, suitable valve that works for this? I want a 1/4" tubing size so it wont be noticed as much. Any ideas? Looking for a high quality programmable led driver. Posted: 19 Jun 2020 03:43 AM PDT I want to have one long ~5m strip (rgb) that has good light quality and can be controlled via wifi and programmed. For example like a fake sunrise that the strip gets brighter over a period of time. Also since it will replace my old sealing lamp is there a remote that can be installed instead of a normal light switch? Thanks, have a nice day! [link] [comments] |
Any options to leave a switch controlled outlet permanently on? Posted: 19 Jun 2020 08:29 PM PDT I have an outlet in my bathroom that is wired such that it is only active when the bathroom lights are turned on. I would really like to have this outlet be permanently live instead. Is there any smart light switches I could use to easily achieve this? Any ideas would be welcome. Thank you [link] [comments] |
How to make this under counter light smart? Posted: 19 Jun 2020 08:25 PM PDT So I have under counter lights in the main part of my kitchen that are light switch controlled. I am planning on adding a Lutron caseta to control those. I have a bar area that also has an under counter light hard wired to power somewhere and when I want to turn it on, I flip the switch on the actual unit. What are my easiest options to get this bar light to come on with the other under counter lights? picture of the lightlight pic [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Jun 2020 08:09 PM PDT Quick and simple: Is there a product that offers indication on whether or not a deadbolt is engaged or not, but does not have any motorized locking features? Alternatively, is there any smart locks that allow you to disable the motorized lock and just manually lock it (but still get locked/unlocked notifications)? [link] [comments] |
Upgrade Old Whole-Home Audio System Posted: 19 Jun 2020 07:33 PM PDT I recently bought a new home and the existing whole-home audio system was included. When the previous owner built the house, they had speakers wired in almost every room (14 zones in all!!). They are all run to a central closet with the amplifiers and audio receiver, which is very old. I believe it only has FM tuner, CD player, and 2 "video" input slots. The volume controls for each zone are on the amplifiers and there are no volume controls in individual rooms--all volume is controlled from the closet. I'm planning on getting a SONOS Connect or something similar to add streaming capabilities to this, but I am trying to figure out a way to make the set-up more functional for me. I would love to pick and choose which zones I hear audio from without having to go to the closet and manually turn on/off individual zones every time I want to listen to music. I do not need to hear different sources in different zones; one source at a time is fine. Adding wall volume controls to each room is an unlikely option at this point unless there is an easier way to add that then I am picturing. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Jun 2020 10:56 AM PDT We recently purchased a new house and it has 2 wired ceiling speakers in the master bedroom ceiling and 2 more in the main living area that walks out to an outdoor patio area but the previous owners took their audio controller with them in the sale. The wires are just hanging loose in the closet right now waiting to be hooked up to something. I'm looking for a recommendation for a controller that can
If this question has already been beaten to death I would welcome some links to previous posts where the answer might be already. I did some searches in this sub before posting and couldn't find something that really seemed to fit my situation, although I'm sure this can't be a unique problem. [link] [comments] |
Does anyone here have any experience with Elan home control / automation system's? Posted: 19 Jun 2020 09:11 PM PDT New house being built, has an 8in lcd home control system by elan. Supposedly the control box that sits in the ceiling is zigbee/z-wave compatible. House comes with a zigbee door lock and doorbird camera. Just want to know if it's all garbage or I can actually use it [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Jun 2020 04:41 AM PDT Two questions 1) I currently have a ceiling light/fan. It is controlled by a single on/off switch that has a dimmer for the light. I know about the issues of not being able to use the Lutron Caseta dimmers for this, but what about the non-dimmers? The only thing I care about is turning the light on and off, I don't care about controlling the fan from the switch, and I don't care about dimming the light. Something like this 2) what is the difference between the - PD6-ANS-WH - PD-5ANS-WH-R Edit1: Here is the current switch Edit 2: upload photos, in edit 3 added the Caseta dimmer Edit 3: photo with current switch and with Lutron Caseta dimmer here The fan works. The light is dim and the switch LEDs are not on and none of the buttons on the switch work. [link] [comments] |

Is there a way to use the Shelly 1 and homekit to control a single switch shutter? Posted: 19 Jun 2020 03:26 AM PDT In my home I have shutters that don't have 2 buttons for open/close, but instead it's 1 button and when you press it once it'll begin opening the shutter, pressing it again while it's still opening will stop it, and pressing it once more will make the shutter go back to closing. So each press of the button will either open, close or stop the shutter, if pressed once and left as is the shutter will completely open or close(depending on its previous state). My question is if I can flash the homekit code onto the Shelly 1 and use it to control these shutters. I'm asking since the homekit code on github states it doesn't support rolling shutter mode yet. Any replies are appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Jun 2020 05:46 PM PDT I'm very new to home automation but I'm loving what it can do when it works. So I have a few starter Wi-Fi plugs and bulbs throughout my house to introduce me to automation. THE PROBLEM: If a switch gets turned off or the power goes off, they struggle to reconnect to the network. Sometime they have to be reset entirely. MY EQUIPMENT: I have an Xfinity dual band router with 2.4 and 5 signals. The plugs and bulbs I use connect to the 2.4 signal only. I'm controlling it with the Google home hub. MY QUESTION: • is there away to insure they don't loose connection? • Should I install a bridged secondary router solely to connect my smart plugs and bulbs to so they don't get disconnected for main network? • Should I try to separate the signals or setup a "guest channel" only for the smart devices ANY ADVICE WOULD BE HELPFUL [link] [comments] |
Any Lutron Caseta users - Subscription? Posted: 19 Jun 2020 08:26 AM PDT I've looked all over their website and done searches but I cannot seem to find the info (maybe my Google Fu just sucks), but does Lutron Caseta light controls work locally or do you need a cloud subscription for it? lutron lamp dimmer outside? What's similar? Posted: 19 Jun 2020 03:28 PM PDT Most of my house is or will be caseta, and I like the homekit integration. I have outside lights on my deck that are currently plugged into the outside outlet. I installed a rather bulky outlet cover box out there but I don't think it'll fit the lutron dimmer plus the other stuff that's in there. (I have a wyze camera plugged in with a smart switch so I can reset it as needed) is there any way I can weather proof this, or is there something that will work similarly? I'm looking for HK and I definitely want a physical switch by the door and it has ti be dimmable. I have an outdoor extension cord with on/off but it's not smart.. and I have another one that's smart, but only works with the Tuyo app and not even switched. [link] [comments] |
Guide to DIY Home Thermostat with Google Assistant Integration Posted: 19 Jun 2020 03:28 PM PDT I just want to make a simple WiFi thermostat (with an ESP8266) that I can control via my Google Home. Ideally, I don't want to log into more than one account, don't want to run any software locally, and don't want to have to pay. I have not found a guide that works with currently-available services (gBridge.io went out of business). Why is this so hard? All suggestions are appreciated! Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Jun 2020 03:01 PM PDT Hi everyone, We have an amazing house cat who loves to sit out in the garden on dry days. We try and indulge her when we can, but if we're not watching then after a while she get curious of the feathery chirpy things around our neighbour's bird feeder and goes for a wander. She then goes for a further wander etc. Etc. There's a busy road nearby and my parents have had two beloved cats killed by cars (at a different house). As such, I live in dread that one day she won't come home. Building an unscaleable fence around the garden isn't an option, We tried training her to a lead but she kept FREAKING OUT, we don't want to put up a visible structure like a catio and I've looked into e-fences but they seem to be focussed on Electrically shocking the cats which I'm opposed to. Ideally I want to implement a cat detector fence that sends us a text and/or plays a noise through Alexa or Sonos when the cat crosses the line. We can then go get her and give her a time out. Can anyone recommend anything like that? Cheers, Ishmael [link] [comments] |

What's the best way to turn off Amazon Cloud Camera? Posted: 19 Jun 2020 11:09 AM PDT I have several of the Amazon discontinued Cloud cameras on the inside of my house. I have them all set up to look at home and away status and they're on when I'm not home and they're off when I am. I'd like to update that though so that I can turn them on with routine at bedtime and then turn them back off with another routine when I wake up. I found that it's really easy to turn them on as part of the routine, but turning them off is not something that can be done due to security reasons. I read on the help section that you would just need to open the Cloud Camera app to resync home at away status, but this doesn't appear to be the case. I have to go in to eat Hammer individually and toggle the home away status for it to update. Obviously this is kind of a pain. Is there anything else that I can do here? [link] [comments] |
