Is there or will there be a "Linux" of home automation controls?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 04:39 PM PDT

As far as platforms go, google, alexa, ifttt and all the other things I've tried are limiting in how much control they give you over things. Just today google or GE pushed an update that bricked my lights. They used to turn on randomly at 3AM (always max bright) for inexplicable reasons due to another update.

I want a platform for smart devices that is community driven not advertising driven because it seems non of these companies give a damn about service or products that work consistently. They don't respect my intelligence enough to allow me to control my devices at any level besides off and on.

I'm just so jaded by this and I know there's better smart lights on the market but if I'm limited to expensive and locked down products that they can break whenever they feel like with an invisible update, I have no ambition for expanding my collection and starting to automate more things.

It's the little things in HA that some times make you the happiest. Motion detector in shower stall to turn on exhaust fan.

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 02:44 PM PDT

Been wanting this setup for awhile. Added a TP Link smart switch recently for both the light and exhaust fan so I could at least Alexa the fan on. But just got my Samsung motion detector and now when someone is in the shower stall, the fan shall come on all by itself.

At least once a week I would forget and get out of the shower to massively fogged mirrors... Which would delay shaving a few minutes.

    No more I say!

Powerview Hunter Douglas Problem with Shade after splicing Cable coming from Shade

Powerview Hunter Douglas Problem with Shade after splicing Cable coming from Shade

So I hope didnt make a mistake on my shades.

    1. I bought a DC converter to get rid of batteries for 2 shades which sit side by side on a large window. It came with a splitter. (1 Female to 2 Males)
    2. Shade A works well after testing, both direct without splitter and with splitter
    3. Shade B has a male, so I needed to cut and splice it to the splitter. Pic attached. (not taped yet so dont judge!)
    4. After splicing, Shade B wont work, tried resetting, switched splice ends, multiple test cases.
    5. Shade A works fine in the splitter.

    Any ideas appreciated..

Remove gmail access from android device?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 07:50 PM PDT

I have an old all in one pc that I put android on. It is acting like a nest hub but since I intend for it to be public, I would like to remove my personal accounts from it. The trick is, my google home account is my gmail. So I would need to stay logged in as me but disallow access to gmail.

Does anyone know how to do this? Maybe just remove the gmail app? Any advice would be awesome.

    Industrial/commercial grade rbg LEDs

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 05:24 PM PDT

I am currently considering a project where I want to build something out of wood and would like to encase addressable LED strip/rope lights in epoxy that would shine down through the epoxy from overhead. Think of an upside down river table. Can anyone recommend lights that would have the quality to be permanently installed? The driver would be changeable - I just dont want to be dealing with failed LEDs in 2 years or something like that.

    Wall mount Tablet - Power?

Any Suggestions for power? I would like a clean Installation. This is on an exterior wall so maybe 1.25" before concrete block. Am I able to maybe tap into the Alarm panel for a 12v connection and use an in wall 12v-5v adapter? Thanks in advance.

    C by GE bulbs bricked?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 10:35 AM PDT

I have no idea if this is the place to go for this but I got a new nest mini yesterday, moved the home mini it replaced to my sisters room and everything worked fine, wake up this morning and both of my c by ge bulbs have stopped responding, restart all the Google homes, still nothing factory reset the bulbs, and now I cannot set them up in either the c by ge app or the Google home app. I've tried going to support and they immediately killed the session both times (it'll say waiting for next agent, your talking to so and so, session ended) and I've looked for other solutions online and nothing, both of these bulbs are just overpriced LED lights now I literally cannot set them up anymore, has anyone come across this issue and fixed it? Or am I just screwed and I have to replace the lights to get the smart functionality back now?

Flashed a pair of RGB bulbs to ESPHome, Connected to Home Assistant, then set them up in NodeRed to tell me the weather by setting each one to a specific color.

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 04:07 PM PDT

Flashed a pair of RGB bulbs to ESPHome, Connected to Home Assistant, then set them up in NodeRed to tell me the weather by setting each one to a specific color.

So I ordered a pair of bulbs from Amazon for about 10 each. Figured they would be based off the Tuya design and was not disappointed. Compiled and flashed to ESPHome because I figure why have something extra there and it has worked great on my Sonoff Basic's. I used Tuya Convert to do the flash. That was fun but then I got to thinking, maybe I could have them do something useful in the morning like wake me up to the weather info around sunrise. Nothing major just some basic hot, warm, comfortable, cool, cold info on one and if it's cloudy, rainy, storms, clear, etc on the other and nothing super bright except for a tornado which is bright red and I may end up doing something else with that in another flow. Here is what I came up with:

    Node Red Screenshot

I am SUPER proud of myself because I literally got the bulbs yesterday afternoon, installed node red last night then went to bed and had NEVER used it before. It was a PITA to figure out how to pull the only two fields I needed from OpenWeatherMap's output but it functions just fine. For anyone wondering the bolded part is what you need to pull from the particular field needed:

    var msg1 = { payload:msg.payload[0].main.temp };

    var msg2 = { payload:msg.payload[0].weather[0].id };

    return [ msg1, msg2];

Didn't realize they put out so many ID's but wanted to just combine a lot of the stuff but split out tornado's since they happen in my area. The temp's were done with ranges to trigger a particular bulb and there are two entries because the bulb has a specific white LED output and then a combined RGB LED output, one is a bright pure white light the other is a more yellowed white light. But if you don't tell the lightbulb to turn off the white but had it on before it just leaves the white at the previous state when it turns on so you have to control it like two bulbs in one controlling each pair for brightness as well as on or off not to mention for the color of the RGB. For snow I wanted a pure white but dim bulb and if I had the bulb on bright white before bed it would be at the same level as before if I had not done the switch.

Pulled my location from Home Assistant to make sure that I would be home when it triggered and used BigTimer to trigger the event.

Still have a lot to learn but I am getting started. I am also not a programmer at all. I am a geek and work with hardware much better than software but YAML hasn't been too awful to figure out. I got my first set of Sonoff Basic's on Feb 18th and didn't end up flashing them to ESPHome until the end of May but once I did I think I really took off.

JSON can be pulled from https://github.com/nightshade00013/NodeRed_WeatherBulbs

    2000W smart dimmer?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 03:18 PM PDT

Hi! I am working on a smart implementation of my outdoor heaters. I have configured some sort of thermostat which regulates the heaters almost to my liking. The only thing I miss is the fact that they are controlled by a switch, meaning they are either on of off. I would really like the possibility to dim them, but since they are 2000W each, I can't seem to find a dimmer. I use Homey do would like it to be Homey compatible.

Any ideas on dimmers I could use?

    SMART THERMOSTAT

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 02:53 PM PDT

We have a lake house with baseboard heating in each room. Each room has its own thermostat.

In the winter when we get there the house takes a long time to heat up.

I was thinking of getting a smart Thermostat for the living room, so I could hear up the house I'm the winter when I drive up.

I believe it's low voltage wiring currently. A neat seems like it would be overkill for something like this but is there anything else in the market you would recommend for this situatio

    Roomba 960 vs Neato D7

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 02:32 PM PDT

Looking for a robot vacuum and I think I've settled one of these 2.

    Neato D7 for 479+tax 960 for 349+tax

Shark iq with dust bin is also 349 but read a lot of bad reviews about it

Any experience with either? Is the neato worth the extra price? My home is all hardwood with a number of area rugs.

If you use a TP-Link Kasa HS220 (smart dimmer switch), please tell me about your bulbs!

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 10:23 AM PDT

I have had the hardest time finding LED bulbs which don't have driver compatibility issues with the HS220; I've gone through five brands already. If you have an HS220 and have found some LED bulbs which dim nicely without flicker or buzzing, please tell me about them! Preferably non-smart bulbs, since I've already got a smart switch.

Alternatively, if you've happened to come across a document or thread listing bulbs compatible with this switch, I'd love to see it! I've had zero luck tracking one down.

August Gen3 smart lock battery life?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 01:59 PM PDT

Does anyone have any real world experience with the newer Gen 3 (or newer) battery life? I've seen some sites claim 6 months, others 1 year etc. 6 Months is extremely short and would be annoying to change batteries that often. Also these estimates maybe from older August devices.

Smart replacement for Somfy SM 2000 Pro awning control

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 01:28 PM PDT

    Hi!

The house we recently bought came with an outdoor awning controlled by a Somfy SM 2000 Pro control and a wind and sun sensor. I would like to replace the control with a more modern version, if possible one that I can integrate with my smart home (HomeAssistant) or at least control from multiple places.

Do you have any advice/recommendations what I could use to replace the old Somfy? I guess I only need a new controller? Do I need a new set of sensors as well?

    Thanks!

I was able to add a xiaomi temp sensor without any issues however my Osram smart+ bulb just doesnt show up when I search for devices. Has anyone hat similar problems and/or found a solution?

Integrating Old ZWave devices with Nest Infrastructure

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 01:19 PM PDT

Several years ago I paid for Vivint's home automation package and security, I've added some dimmers, switches, etc and it's all zwave. I'm dumping Vivint and I bought heavy into the Nest infrastructure just so I wouldn't have to be eternally configuring shit. I had no idea the outlets/switches would be such an ordeal. These systems and their various compatibility dongles have gotten so complicated, I'm still mostly crossing my fingers it all works together when everything arrives. Using Alexa to control most everything seems to be my best bet so far - so.....

How do I connect Alexa directly to zwave devices?

If I HAVE to just buy new devices, recommendations? Wemo? Kasa? Any of the million brands out there now?

    Thanks in advance.

    Smart Fans

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 10:11 AM PDT

Looking to get fans in master bedroom, 3 guest bedrooms, great room, and office. Would you recommend going with smart fans or basic fans with smart switches and hubs? Any specific recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Trying to keep costs low but do want quality and Alexa / google abilities for the fans and lights.

I used soldering iron to make holes on my projects with plastic enclosures before. But now I use step drill bit. Definitely better. I've made a video on how I make holes now.
