    Posted: 17 Jun 2020 11:38 PM PDT

I'm looking to create an AV / Network closet in my house. The network side I have down, but I lack knowledge on the AV side of things.

I am looking to have my cable box, gaming consoles, CCTV, and sound system in the closet, but send the signal to all three rooms in the house. Can anyone share some set ups they have done or tips and tricks.

Raspberry Pi 4 Official USB SSD Boot (2020)

Raspberry Pi 4 Official USB SSD Boot (2020)

Raspberry PI 4 can now officially boot from USB - finally! That means you can use SSD or HDD drives instead of SD card. In today's video I will show you how you can do that step by step and you don't even have to attach a monitor to your Raspberry Pi.

Raspberry Pi 4 Official USB SSD Boot (2020)

Or if you prefer to read check the full article - https://peyanski.com/official-raspberry-pi-4-usb-boot

SD cards can cause issues and are much slower than SSDs. Since I have a Raspberry Pi 4 my SD card got corrupted several times. So I had to remove it, format it, install OS again and restore all of my configurations that I had. Doing this can be really frustrating, so I waited for the official Raspberry Pi 4 USB boot as a kid for its birthday.

    Cheers,

Hello all i just wanted to share my project which is a mashup of other people projects.

heres a video of the sensor and magnet in action

Drzz's tutorial for the electromagnetic lock https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3R2Wttd4Os

and the fingerprint sensor part was from this tutorial by Everythingsmarthome who helped me get this lock setup and working perfectly.

All i really contributed to the project was a 3d printable model for a decora style wall plate.

Mesh vs AP for deadzones due to interference

    Posted: 17 Jun 2020 11:32 PM PDT

I've been trying to find the best method of providing internet around to house due to interference. I do have access to Ethernet lines in the rooms with the deadzones, but I'm not sure if I should go the AP route or go with a mesh network.

I'd like some advice on which route to go, I get about 600-700 Mbps on an Ethernet connection but that drops significantly when you get closer to the deadzones in the house.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I was thinking either an eero pro w/beacons, Nest WiFi, or a Ubuiquiti AP

Smart Life plugs suddently only showing up as LEDs in Google Home?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2020 10:32 PM PDT

Today I added an extra plug to my smart life app, and then went into google home app to configure it... Shortly afterwards, I wasn't able to control any of my other wifi plugs, so I checked and all of the switches disappeared, and they now just show up as LEDs. I've tried deleting the home, factory resetting the switches, deleting my Smart Life account and creating accounts on clone platforms, I deleted the google home app as well, reset my phone, unplugged all devices. Nothing seems to be geting the google home app to show me my plugs. Any ideas? Anyone else having issues withthee like this?

    most secure smart lock?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2020 09:52 PM PDT

    https://www.kwikset.com/kevo/smart-lock/security

kevo kwikset has multi level encryptions and dual authentication

"Kevo is ANSI Grade 2, BHMA Certified, and UL Fire Rated, promising the best in home security."

have you found any that is more secure?

hypothetically, even if i use this "secure" smart lock, what are some other ways that i can mitigate data breaches? I was thinking that having iot devices on a whole separate PVLAN would probably be the most secure way. that way my main network wont be penetrated.

    Smart thermostat for old condo

    Posted: 17 Jun 2020 03:47 PM PDT

We purchased a condo recently with baseboard hydronic heating and this is apparently controlled by a thermostat as shown in the image. It is most likely the Honeywell TH1100DV1000 Non-programmable Heat Only Thermostat

    https://imgur.com/moVvv8b

I believe this thermostat is faulty and shows 80f all the time - regardless of what we set it to.

Also this thermostat is a line voltage type unit which cannot be directly upgraded to a Nest Thermostat.

For cooling we have 2 through wall AC units one in the living room and one in the bedroom - I just purchased a Sensibo air to hopefully automate the AC controls based on ambient temperature for the bedroom as a trial.

Does anyone have experience upgrading such an old thermostat system to a smart system?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2020 07:45 PM PDT

I was considering getting one of the new Harmony hub remotes and it has integration with Smart Things hub and has buttons on the remote for controlling outlets and such. Does anybody have any experience with these products? I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Have Google assistant read a list from a website?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2020 07:38 PM PDT

I'd like to be able to ask my Google home for a list of people that have signed up for a class at my gym each day. How feasible is that? I was thinking maybe scrape the data into a file off the website and have Google read that. Is there an easier way?

Is it safe to use a GFCI socket connected to a Smart Switch on a normal board?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2020 07:26 PM PDT

Hey there! I'm in India. I need to replace my bathroom geyser's board. I've tried searching for GFCI/RCD boards, but I couldn't really find any. But I did find this instead: https://www.havells.com/en/consumer/switches/havells-accessories/accessories/prcd-plug.html

Now this is an RCD socket. Would serve my needs well right? But this is /r/homeautomation, and as we all love to do, I want to automate my geyser, so I have hot water 24/7. Since I couldn't find a GFCI board, I was wondering if I connected this PRCD socket to say a Tuya/Smart Life 16A Smart Socket, would that be safe?

And before anyone asks, no I can't really ask my electrician. Electricians in India aren't usually professionally trained, and the last time I asked my local electrician, he did not know what I meant. GFCI outlets are not common in India.

I bought a govee dream color assignable LED strip that isn't waterproof, I'm wondering if I should just return it and get the waterproof ones or will these survive? I plan on putting them under the counters

Can 1 thermo sensor control multiple smart vents?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2020 02:22 PM PDT

This may seem silly or obvious but I'm new to smart homes and home automation. We have an ecobee thermostat and are looking at getting 2 flair vents for a set of guest rooms upstairs that are never used. The way the rooms are set up, we could set up 1 vent in each room and leave the doors open while putting the sensor in a small alcove between them but only if we could control multiple vents with 1 sensor. We are attempting to save as much money here as possible since we are going through a remodel.

    Problems with Tuya light switch

    Posted: 17 Jun 2020 04:36 PM PDT

I had issues with this a couple of days ago and have ignored it untill just now.

I have a tuya dual light switch which seemed DOA.

But I've just turned off the power and back on again. Two blue LEDs show at the front around the light switch buttons. Press them they turn the lights on and off etc. Brilliant I thought. Scan on the tuya app. Nothing. Press and hold the light switch button so it beeps. Circle led lights flash like mad.

Scan on the app. At some point in the process the LEDs turn off. The app doesn't find them. The unit is then completely dark and not responsive at all.

Turned the power off and on again. Blue LEDs again. Pressed one of the lights. Turns on. Then goes dark again. Power off and on. Blue LEDs, left it alone after swearing at it. Any ideas?

Aqara Hub vs Xiaomi Gateway V3?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2020 02:19 AM PDT

I've tried researching the topics online before posting, but I can't quite get everything I want to know before making an order. So okay, both support Apple HomeKit, which is very important to me, but what are the differences between this two?

I want to buy the smart (wall) switches from Aqara (as I can see, Xiaomi does not have smart switches) and connect them to the hub to control all my light trough the Apple HomeKit app. Is it going to work?

On their website it says "Aqara Hub required", but since it's Zigbee compatible, I should be able to use it with any Zigbee compatible hub, right?

One more question, what's the deal with the Chinese/EU/US servers of the hub? What's that? I don't really get that. What does it mean when you say that the hub works on the Chinese server?

Also I'd be interested in hearing about any other baby related home automation solutions people have implemented!
