Posted: 21 Jun 2020 10:58 PM PDT I've just bought a newly-released LG 55GX OLED television. Other tech equipment I own currently are a recent iPhone, an old iMac and an old iPad, 2xSonos Play:1, 1xSonos Play:3 & Harmon Kardon Soundsticks My apartment is total 54m2 on one level, with one bedroom, one bathroom, stone floor throughout (good for acoustics) and two 9m2 terraces. Some queries are: What would be a perfect sound system to use in conjunction with my new television? Are any of my existing speakers worth keeping? I'm interested in getting a home intruder alarm system and electric window blinds. I'm not sure what other home automation would suit me. I could consider one of the voice control systems but don't know which. I live alone and have had two collapsing episodes recently resulting in injury. Does any health monitoring device exist which would alert someone if I have a sudden fainting episode? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Help needed: Finding a dimmer switch US size 1gang/2way Posted: 21 Jun 2020 10:46 PM PDT Hey r/homeautomation, I'm looking to find a dimmer switch in the US size that is 1gang/2way and if possible can be flashed with tasmota. I've been looking for days and can't find one anywhere... any ideas? [link] [comments]
Trigger webhook when Tuya Smart Device changes Posted: 21 Jun 2020 10:22 PM PDT I know there's an API which I can use to control my Tuya Smart Life devices, but is there a similar service in the opposite direction? ie when I turn on a wifi switch send a webhook request or some other notification which can be used to fire an external service? Wiring setup for HS200 as smart plug control only (no direct switching) Posted: 21 Jun 2020 07:45 PM PDT Ok, so I have a bit of an odd setup here and I want to make sure I'm not creating some type "oh god, oh god, my house is on fire" hazard with my wiring. My porch lights were set up as a 3-way switch with one switch inside the house and one in the garage. When I started installing smart switches a couple of years ago I decided I didn't need these to be 3 way so I installed a GE smart switch in the house and in the garage just directly connected the line/load,capped the traveler, and put a blank cover over the switch. Fast forward to today and I have an extra HS200 and a TP link smart plug that I want to use to control a fan in the garage. I don't want the switch to do anything except control the smart plug, so I just need it to be connected to something hot. I figure since I have an unused box already wired up in the garage, I can install the HS 200 in the box for the front porch lights and connect the line/load directly so the switch is always hot and doesn't screw up the circuit for the front porch lights. Long story short- is having the line/load directly connected likely to cause any issues with the HS200? Specifically the "overheat and cause big fire" type of issue? I can't see why it would (and all switches are working currently), but I'm pretty self taught at this, so.... [link] [comments]
Digital Cookbook and Google Home Hub Automation Posted: 21 Jun 2020 12:39 PM PDT Is anyone aware of a good setup for digital cookbooks that has features for reading off directions similar to google home hub's recipe reader? The google solution is nice if you find a recipe off the internet, but if you want to maintain a household recipe book and manage those collections, it's a pain. Looking for other solutions! Smart switch that controls things not wired? Posted: 21 Jun 2020 06:12 PM PDT Hi I'm looking for a solution but I'm having trouble coming up with good search terms. Long story short I have a ceiling fan that I want to replace that currently has 2 smart switches (fan, light, with neutral) but there are no quality 64+" ceiling fans that aren't "smart" themselves and wire to just 1 switch with a remote. I'd like to replace the second switch that will now be useless with a button or switch to run a routine such as open blinds, turn on fan and turn off lamps. Is there a 1 gang switch that can run routines in Hubitat or Alexa instead of controlling what it is wired to? [link] [comments]
Is there some sort of regulatory body for IOT/Smart Home devices yet? Posted: 21 Jun 2020 01:55 PM PDT To me, I feel that for me to fully endorse IOT/Smart Home devices to friends and family there would need to be some sort of regulatory body in order for all devices to be build to specs. I know there's some soft specs like "wifi devices", "zigbee" or "zwave" but even within these specs there are variances which is why I can't use Smartthings with Wyze devices even though both uses zigbee (Although Wyze uses a slight variances of zigbee). Wi-Fi devices has the "Wi-Fi Alliance", Bluetooth has the "Bluetooth SIG", HDMI has the "HDMI LA" and USB has the "USB IF". Does IOT/Smart Home devices have any sort of regulatory body/group coming together to create a standard? [link] [comments]
Wifi power meter without a switch Posted: 21 Jun 2020 12:49 PM PDT I am looking into power meter device that I can put inside wall outlets, but I do not want to pay more so that there is also on-off option (i.e. Shelly 1 PM). Any suggestions? I prefer it to be WiFi and option to flash it with Tasmota is desired, otherwise let it work with MQTT (over lan, without cloud). [link] [comments]

Smartplug to turn on water heater when close to home Posted: 21 Jun 2020 04:20 PM PDT I would like to have the water heater ON only when I am in my hometown. If I am away for a few days, I would like it to turn off, and back on when I am close to my place. Does anyone know how to automate this? Ideally, I would define a geographic perimeter around my place, and when I am outside, the plug would turn off the heater, and back on when I re-enter the zone. [link] [comments]
Posted: 21 Jun 2020 06:22 AM PDT Hi. I'm not sure options for water/leak detectors - I tried searching but I apologize if I missed it. I don't have a much in terms on automation per se. Here's what I do have if that helps: - nest smoke detectors and doorbell - google mini - iPhones - not sure what else that's relevant I want to have some amount of water/leak detectors. At least four but could easily see using maybe a dozen if they're affordable. I'm not opposed to needing to buy a hub device but I'm not sure if it's one hub per house or per level of house etc. I would prefer a smart notification rather than a crazy loud high pitch sound. What are the relevant choices or factors to consider? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Smart switch for ventilation fan. Posted: 21 Jun 2020 03:50 PM PDT My house has a ventilation fan switch that turns on the furnace fan as well as the bathroom/vent fans. I'd like to add a smart switch or at least some kind of timer switch. I opened up the switch and obviously it's a little more than just a light switch. I'm assuming it needs to have a higher load rating. The switch has 3 black and 1 red wire which I'm assuming is for the furnace fan. Anyway I can automate this safely? 3-unit condo, convert 2-wire doorbell to video intercom entry system? Posted: 21 Jun 2020 12:03 PM PDT Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I live in a 3-unit condo building. Before we moved in, unit 3 installed a door entry system with an electric strike, but the only interior unit is in unit 3. Unit 1 and 2 both have normal 2-wire doorbells right under the unit 3 exterior system. I live in unit 1 and installed a Nest Hello in place of the doorbell, which works fine. I'd like to create a unified system, rather than this post-apocalyptic doorbell situation we have now. It's functional, but totally ridiculous looking. Has anybody used this system from BEC integrated solutions? https://becintegrated.com/video-intercom-systems/multi-tenant-apartment/mt-series-doorbell-video-entry?p=1#mt It appears that system can use just the existing 2-wire doorbell setup and convert it to a full video intercom/entry system. The one downside would be losing the internet connectivity of Nest Hello that I have now. I can't figure out if perhaps there is a way to still keep an internet option with it. I have been trying to figure out if there is a way to use DoorBird with a 2-wire system without having to run new wires, which would be particularly challenging in our very old brick building. Any other suggestions? I reached out to a couple local companies that claim to specialize in this, but I wasn't impressed. They both recommended upgrading to systems that would require complete rewiring, and that actually had terrible reviews online and that had iOS apps with 1 star (reviews all said app basically doesn't work). It made me think those companies were just installing the one product they knew about, and weren't actually knowledgable about all the types of products available. [link] [comments]
Posted: 21 Jun 2020 03:18 PM PDT Please help me 😫 I have a BroadLink rm mini 3 and im using the ihc app to control my tv and set top box. This works great. However I want to connect it to Alexa, whenever I try it says no devices found how do I solve this ? I am in EU and have the ihc for eu app. Thanks in advance 👍🏻 [link] [comments]
Posted: 21 Jun 2020 03:12 PM PDT I'm afraid I already know the answer, but just to confirm it: brodlink and Alexa support control over voice only for a few appliances such as your TV and AC, right? It doesn't offer support to control over voice for your garage door, right? :/ I can control on the app but Alexa won't do it over voice Thanks [link] [comments]
Whole Home Audio - Troubleshooting - Please Help (wife is losing her patients haha) Posted: 21 Jun 2020 08:12 AM PDT My wife and I recently purchased a home that has a partial whole home audio system installed. Previous owner took their receiver and never left any instructions. Pics of everything: https://imgur.com/a/YJw82wW On the main floor, we have our receiver. And in the basement, there are 2 Russound A-Bus 4 Zone, 1 Source Audio Hubs. I have my speaker wire connected and the 5 ceiling speakers on the main floor have audio. All remaining speakers do not (there are many - upstairs, bathrooms, outside, etc). There is an HDMI out connected on the receiver to an HDMI extender, but I'm unsure where it leads. There's an RCA sitting idle, which I'm assuming needs to connect to the Russound units, but my receiver does not have an RCA output. (I have an older receiver that has one, but it doesn't have bluetooth, which I would like to have so I can change music selections from my phone). Option 1). If I purchase one of those HDMI to RCA converter units (ex. https://www.amazon.ca/GANA-Composite-Converter-Supports-DVD-Black/dp/B06X6HBQDH/ref=sr_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=HDMI+to+RCA+Cable&qid=1592752196&sr=8-6), do you think that'll solve my problems? Option 2). Hook up out receiver that has RCA audio out, and purchase one of these bluetooth adaptors (ex. https://www.amazon.ca/Bluetooth-Streaming-Esinkin-Wireless-Receiver/dp/B016NUTG5K/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=receiver+audio+out+bluetooth&qid=1592752425&s=electronics&sr=1-4) I'm open to suggestions. Purchase the converter? Replace the receiver? Update the equipment used? Etc.... from what I can tell, this equipment is 10 years old. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]
Three GE (Jasco) Z-Wave Switches Failed Simultaneously: "Flickering" On/Off Posted: 21 Jun 2020 02:04 PM PDT I have three GE/Jasco Z-Wave Switches (Model #12722) on the same circuit -- in a modern home, that have been functioning as intended for four years. On the same electrical circuit, I have:
This morning, switch #1 started flickering: at an extremely regular interval of approximately one cycle per second, the relay would turn on and then immediately off (flickering the light). I turned off the breaker, and replaced switch #1 with a brand new one -- since the 12722's are no longer made, I used GE/Jasco (Model #14291). When I turned the breaker back on, the new Switch #1 worked fine (and still does)... but now Switch #2 and Switch #3 both are exhibiting the same symptoms. They are turning on/off repeatedly once per second. The probability of three switches failing simultaneously is basically zero. It can't be a wiring problem, since it's worked for years. Does anyone have any ideas? FWIW:
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Help very much appreciated!! [link] [comments]

Suggestions for non smart device that responds to IR remote? Any smart programmable IR transmitters? Posted: 21 Jun 2020 01:13 PM PDT I have an inside AC unit that has an IR remote. I was wondering if there are any smart home solutions like a programmable IR transmitter I could program to mimick the units remotes signals, then i could leave that in line of site of the unit and have it proxy smart home commands from google home (or a more niche app if need be) [link] [comments]

Looking for ESP8266/ESP32 Based Decorator Style Switch/Relay Posted: 21 Jun 2020 06:46 AM PDT My background and employment is in the architectural lighting industry, mainly in dynamic (color changing) lighting and controls. I am finally in a position where I live in a house I can modify, and am looking to extend some architectural control software I've written to control some of the lighting in my house. I am aware SONOFF relay modules and how to write my own firmware to them, but am looking for something which is integrated into a decorator style paddle switch assembly. I have firmware sketched out for both the ESP8266 as well as the ESP32 modules which is compatible with my control infrastructure, but am open to porting this functionality to other MCUs. So what do my options look like here? I would prefer that any options mention have documented methods of successfully disassembling the hardware and loading custom firmware. The paddle switch should only be connected to the MCU, and in no way capable of triggering the relay without software intervention. I could probably fabricate what I am after, but my CNC isn't set up here yet, and I would prefer to only have to troubleshoot the software, rather than the hardware. Thanks [link] [comments]
