Help wanted from poor dad whose kids run the air when there are doors and windows open!

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 04:41 PM PDT

We have nest thermostats upstairs and downstairs in our place. Is there a product that will sense if doors and windows are open and not allow it to run? Im figuring an ifttt but not sure of an affordable product for likely 20 sensors in the house.

    Parts for aquarium

    Part recommendations for aquarium build

Hi folks, I plan to put together an esp8266 and one inline temp probe so I can pass my aquarium temp to smartthings / sharptools and I have a couple questions

    assumptions:

    • I plan to have the rig plugged in to usb power 24/7
    • I may add a temp probe to compare top of tank and bottom of tank
    • I hope to be able to add a TDS probe and also pass that to smartthings/ sharptools when I can find the part
    • the parts can be IDd and found through the smartthings IDE with the ST_anything universal device handler

    Parts:

    • V3 Nodemcu-CH340
    • DS18B20 temp probe
    • power supply TBD

    Questions:

    • are my assumptions sound?
    • Can I get advice on the parts above, are there better options for what I plan?
    • anyone know the name of a TDS probe I can hook up to the same esp8266
    • is this an impractical setup and I should look at a different combination of board, power and probe
    • any power source recommendations?

~$500 budget for a Robot Vacuum that can handle carpet flooring

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 05:27 PM PDT

I'm living in a 1BR apartment that has low/medium-pile carpeting for the flooring. I know that carpeting isn't exactly a strong point for robot vacuums but I'm hoping there are some newer models that handle it.

I've done a little research on my own and it seems like the Roborock S5 is highly recommended but I have seen no reviews about how well it handles carpet. Plus it's on the higher end of my budget (currently $480 on Amazon).

On the other hand, I saw a review from Vacuum Wars on YouTube extolling the carpet cleaning capabilities of the Roomba 960. The review even says it does great deep cleaning, which would help out my allergies a lot. It's also currently $400 on Amazon so I'd save a bit of money over the S5. However, it seems like it's a relatively old model and I'm wondering if they've come out with a new one with significant improvements.

I don't need the vacuum to have fancy features. I just want a vacuum that'll work on my carpet and remember the layout of the room so I can run it every day and have a nice clean floor.

My budget is about $500 but if I can get all this and save a bit of money I'm up for it. What is my best option?

Edit: No pets and no plans for one in the near future

Best solution for remote physical switches for BOND home?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 10:50 PM PDT

I have searched around a lot and unfortunately I cannot wrap my mind around what integrates with what. Here's my situation: I have a fan with lights currently being controlled with BOND and Google Home using voice commands.

What I would like is a wireless button to attach to the wall that would control the light and/or fan. I bought a pico remote because I liked the look of it and thought it would work for what I am looking for, but I wasn't really thinking and didn't purchase the lutron hub as well. Now am I trying to figure out the best way to move forward. Is it possible to use the pico to do this? If it is, I am sure that I will need the lutron hub.

I'm not set for sure on using the pico even if it can be done though. I would rather buy a different more versatile hub that will integrate with a lot more devices than just lutron products going forward.

I already have the BOND, Google Home, Hue bridge, and Harmony hub. Are there any remote wall switches that would control the fan and/or light via the BOND with my set up as is? I'm guessing not, so my next question is what hub/switch would be the best choice to accomplish this and make my home compatible with the most smart devices? I'm thinking smartthings or maybe wink from what I've read, homeassistant seems a little too complicated at first glance.

I apologize for rambling, I really don't know when I became so technically illiterate. I appreciate anyone taking the time to read this and enlighten a dummy like me.

    New construction roller blinds

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 07:20 PM PDT

I'm wondering if anyone has done their own wired roller blinds. I'm trying to figure out how to run the wires/terminate the connections for new construction so that the wires are hidden and the drywallers pull the wire through.

Also, any recommendation on blinds/motors? I have 23 windows I may possibly do so looking to save some money over Lutron.

Apple homekit brings controls to cameras with face recognition.

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 01:01 PM PDT

Just wanted to bring this up with the new TVOS and iOS/iPadOS 14 and latest updates to homekit, we can control Cameras(specific region to be monitored) and will let us know who is at the door. Can be viewed on the TV itself, which is a plus I believe :)

I believe Alexa and Google hub already does that, just wanted to bring the discussion on which cameras are compatible with these Voice Assistants.

Have anyone of you already experienced this features before apple and how do you like them?

Cellular Water Leakage Detection Sensor & Power Outage Monitoring

    Hey guys,

I'm looking for some feedback on a device I have been working over the last few months. This is a IoT device with basically zero configuration. It does not require any local WiFi network as it connects over AT&T cell network. You power up the device and login to the app to configure the destination SMS number and/or email address. Includes a internal battery that will last up 48 hours. Any insight greatly appreciated.

    Window blinds or curtain automation?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 05:45 PM PDT

I'm a smart things and Google home user. I'm also having a really hard time figuring out a decent option to automate some window curtains that I want to open and close on a schedule.

Anybody have a recommendation for a brand or product that I could start with?

Lightwaverf multi-way switching on 3 gang smart switch

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 01:46 PM PDT

I'm not particularly clued in with wiring so I'm sure someone on here can help me, so here is my situation. I have a 3 gang switch in my downstairs hall and one in my upstairs hall, one poles in each are for independent lights, and the two remaining poles serve two different lights.

Downstairs 3 gang looks like this - porch light, hall chandelier, downlighting for stairs. Upstairs 3 gang looks like this - upstairs chandelier, downstairs chandelier, downlighting for stairs.

With the Lightwaverf smart dimmers, my understanding is if they are wired up correctly, one acts as a master and the other a slave, which is not really connected in the circuit, and the magic happens in the app. Is this correct?

Also I cannot find any information on if the two independent lights (porch light and upstairs chandelier) can function on their single poles while while the other two poles are multi switching. Any diagrams on their website are of 1 or 2 gang were the whole switch is part of the multi-way circuit. Link for the info is https://support.lightwaverf.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003011932-How-do-I-wire-2-Way-Smart-Series-dimmers-

With an outlay of over £300 for two of the switches I want to make sure it is possible before taking the dive.

Best options for new house (new as in currently building it)

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 01:26 PM PDT

I can put wires wherever I want, and I don't need to retrofit anything.

I want a good smart lock on the outside, and another on the door to the house that leads directly into the house. I'm looking at August, but not really sure what I should be looking for my house.

I don't really need smart lighting all over the house, just on the entrance, where I'm planning on 5 lamps. Again, no idea except for using maybe Wyze or Samsung bulbs, but I've seen a lot recommending on putting the smart stuff on the switch.

Automatic garage door with MyQ, which apparently is all I can find where I live.

5 cameras, POE, with a Blue Iris server. I've never done or needed this, but seems straightforward

What can I use? Should I just go all in with Google Home, or Alexa? Or some other hub thing to not be dependent on having internet access?

    Thanks!

    App for all smart devices?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 11:13 AM PDT

Is there a "universal" app of sorts for the myriad of smart plugs?

Most of the apps I'm using "look" nearly identical inside the app however they don't seem to share in the ability to add 'different' devices.

Currently I'm using: Smart Life Jinvoo Smart Wasserstein

And about to start with Kasa as I'm looking at getting some TP link wall switches. I also have another wall switch, I don't recall the brand now but I'm sure yet again it will require another app.

I know I can "centralize" them all with Alexa but FFS management is getting to be a pain needing to open each one to remember which does what.

    Any suggestions?

Is the GoControl HUSBZB-1 still the best dual Z-Wave / Zigbee dongle?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 07:18 AM PDT

Looking to dump smartthings hub and go with HomeAssistant running off my NAS for local automation. I need a USB dongle and it looks like the HUSBZB-1 got a lot of love around here. Although the posts are a few years old, I haven't found a successor.

So I ask, is there a better z-wave and zigbee device on the market now or is the HUSBZB-1 still #1 if you need both protocols.

    Anyone have problems with Geofencing?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 04:02 PM PDT

Sorry that this is not really a specific question but I have several different types of devices and systems that I use or have tried to use with geofencing, and with all of them the results are terrible overall. I have a few things that work about 40%-50% of the time, and everything else is more like 10% accurate when it comes to location and geofencing functions. I am wondering if other people have so much trouble with it. I am using Smartthings, IFTTT, different wireless camera systems, smart locks, etc. Its very frustrating, Its been quite a few years since most of these devices and systems started using geofencing and it is still very very poor. Is it just me?
