Has "ok google" gone to shit for anyone else? Anything i can do? Posted: 03 Jul 2020 07:55 AM PDT I dont know if its just us or what. I've got a couple of the google home minis in various rooms controlling my lights and a few random things. For the first year or so it worked great, no compliants, suprisingly well if anything. for the past few months my partner and i have been joking that she's getting dumber by the day. it seems to be true though. theres times we cant get it to respond at all, even standing 1' away repeatedly saying, then screaming "ok google". kitchen timers being set in random rooms across the house... shes trained for both our voices and like i said it used to work nearly flawlessly. do the speakers (mics in them) known go bad or anything like that? Monitor holiday home with no internet Posted: 03 Jul 2020 05:59 PM PDT My dad has a holiday home he wants to monitor with webcams but it doesn't have a permanent internet connection. Would it be possible to set up a cell phone with a hotspot and connect the cams to that to send alerts on motion detection? [link] [comments]
Timing of IFTT and wyze motion sensors Posted: 03 Jul 2020 07:12 PM PDT Hello, I have a SmartThings hub and a good amount of wyze window sensors that I have paired up with IFTT. works great but what I really want it for is to pretty much 'lock down' at around 10PM so that when a window sensor is tripped, all the lights in the house will turn on. Right now, it literally just happens all the time haha. Is there a way I can put schedules on something like this? Thanks [link] [comments]
Ring or Nest integrate into HVAC Posted: 03 Jul 2020 06:57 PM PDT I want to integrate my door and windows into my HVAC systems. The intent is to shut off the A/C if a window is left open. I'm sure I can do this with a CCO from a security system, has anyone done this? [link] [comments]

How do I get a Google Home in my bathroom Posted: 03 Jul 2020 03:56 PM PDT The bathroom in the house I'm renting has no outlets in it. (The bathroom is divided by a door and the sink area has one but not where the toilet and shower are.) I want to get a Google Home (mini) in there, largely for music during my shower. Do you guys know of any light fixtures or bathroom vent fans that have Google Assistant built in? I've seen ones with a Bluetooth speaker but unless they have a microphone I can't skip songs or change volume and I want these features. [link] [comments]

New LED strip controller suggestion Posted: 03 Jul 2020 02:42 PM PDT I saw an article the other day that had Govee strip lights on sale. I don't have any strip lights and have been wanting to get some for a few months now. I saw the 32.8 feet for $20 and jumped on it, buying 2, knowing that the led strips are of decent quality. I made the mistake of assuming that they were at least wifi controlled with their custom app... After all who would make them without it? An assumption on my part. Turns out they aren't even controlled via their proprietary app. I intellectually was prepared to eventually replace the controllers anyway, but now it's a need-to-replace for them to be at all useful... These things are IR controlled! lol. Anyways, since I don't know what type of leds these are for certain. I do know that they are 12v DC with 4 traces. I suspect that they are WS2815 leds because they have 12v power and 4 traces. What controllers would you suggest? I would prefer something that can be flashed to Tasmota, but anything that will work with Home Assistant is acceptable. --- Update --- I'm looking for a prebuilt package of controller and power block so all I need to do is attach them to my LEDs to rock and roll. Tinkering with components and getting them to work reliably is not my wheelhouse. And I only have wifi. As of right now I am not buying a zigbee/z-wave stick for my HA server. [link] [comments]
Smart lock that can work with original deadbolt. Posted: 03 Jul 2020 02:35 PM PDT Hello. I am renting an apartment but want to use a smart deadbolt lock. Is there a smartlock that can connect/replace the inside part of the deadbolt but still use the original deadbolt key bit outside? [link] [comments]
How are you powering your kitchen under cabinet led strip lighting? Posted: 03 Jul 2020 11:49 AM PDT My house is being rewired and I'd like to run WLED-controlled addressable LEDs under my cabinets. My conundrum is how to power them - the electrician has left a line coming from the lighting ring that he says can just be connected to a standard UK socket pattress mounted at the top of the cabinets, this way I can just plug in the current power brick for the lights. Does that sound like a safe solution? What have you got in your kitchens? [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 Jul 2020 02:53 PM PDT When I change the color of just one bulb or two it's fine. But if I try to change the color of them all (individually even) they turn off immediately and start flashing, where I need to reset them again. When i had 5 bulbs only 4 bulbs worked before this happened. Now I have 6 bulbs and only 5 work before this happens. Please help! Using br30 9w rgb bulbs. 2700-9000k, 720 lumens. Posted: 03 Jul 2020 01:32 PM PDT So I have installed security cameras on the front of my house no problem. My front has a garage with eaves that I have mounted them to and can wire the cables no problem. The back of my house is problematic because it's 2 stories tall, and the eaves are way too high to mount a camera to be useful. This means I assume I'd have to mount them to the exterior wall, but drilling through the exterior wall into living room seems like an unwise proposition? I've been googling installs but everyone has them running their external camera wiring through the roof, for the above reasons this isn't possible for me. I'm just hoping someone can offer me some advice or direct me somewhere that explains what to do in this situation. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Automating part of a new house. Where do I start? Posted: 03 Jul 2020 12:54 PM PDT A friend is expanding his house so he has sort of, his own suite. Basically 5 rooms: -Living room -Kitchen -Hallway -2 Bedrooms with attached bathrooms Construction is starting, and he's decided he wants to automate somethings, he wants my help and we've had a long discussion, so far we have decided: 1. Going with HomeKit because we're both fans of the Apple ecosystem, and I know it's a bit more secure (even if it's limiting and expensive) a little Alexa or Google sprinkled in isn't an issue 2. Only things that need to be smart are: Lights, Camera, Air conditioning and Doorlocks 3. The budget is around $2500 The walls (concrete) are nearly complete so we need to start soon. So where do we begin? [link] [comments]
After two years I'm swapping my Leviton Switches to Zooz Posted: 03 Jul 2020 08:47 AM PDT Two years ago I installed 15 Leviton Switches (wifi) throughout my home. Six were 4-way, Six were 3-way, and the remaining three were singles. Over two years seven of the switches bricked and stopped working. One stopped with the switch in the on position with no way to turn it off. At first, I simply swapped them for the same switch. I also took the old switches and tried them in single install positions to make sure it wasn't a glitch. I upgraded the firmware on all of the switches and installed a mesh network to increase the stability. Finally, I decided to check into another manufacturer to see if that helped. I decided to move to Z-wave with a Smart Things Hub and Zooz switches. One big advantage of the Zooz switches is the 3-way and 4-way switches don't need additional smart switches. The traveler switches are traditional mechanical switches. That makes the install cheaper, easier, and has fewer points of failure. So my six 4-way Leviton's became two Zooz and four mechanical switches. Four of my 3-way Leviton's are now two Zooz and two mechanical. And one of my single Leviton's is now a Zooz. Functionality seems pretty much the same, now we wait to see if the stability is better. [link] [comments]
Options for triggering Alexa smart home devices? Posted: 03 Jul 2020 12:19 PM PDT All my smart devices are tied to Alexa home automation. What are my options kicking alexa home automation connected devices from outside of the alexa walled garden? I have a few projects in mind, but the first one I'd like is a button that can be used to turn on/off the alexa connected smart lights in a room. I think for the above project I _could_ use an alexa button connected to an alexa routine, but 1) alexa buttons seem to be unavailable at this point 2) there are other projects I'll probably want to do where a button is not appropriate. Question about Sensibo scheduling Posted: 03 Jul 2020 11:49 AM PDT Can you set a schedule at (just examples) for: Heatpump to turn on at 4pm at 25 degrees, then turn off at 8pm Heatpump to turn on at 6am at 20 degrees, then turn off etc... Basically when you set a schedule can you set different times to come on at different temperatures? How many schedules can you set during a day? [link] [comments]

Want to install simple neutral light led strips and only control brightness. What do I need? Posted: 03 Jul 2020 06:55 AM PDT I wanted to get some simple led lights for my room. Nothing fancy just a neutral color and I want to control brightness. What do I need exactly? I have a light switch that I could change into a dimmer (10A-15A) and that switch leads to a wall outlet nearby. Do I just need a (12V DC, 10-15A?) power supply to hook up to the LEDs and then plug that power supply into the outlet that is connected to the dimmer? Or do I need something inbetween? This is will be my first time trying to do some DIY led lighting btw... EDIT* LED's of interest [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 Jul 2020 06:46 AM PDT My boss is looking for a smoke detector that can be powered over Ethernet and has SMTP protocols so it can send email alerts if it goes off. He's dead set against a Nest apparently and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. [link] [comments] |
