Need help finding a Tuya/SmartLife camera with base station/hub Posted: 02 Jul 2020 10:51 PM PDT I'm trying to find something like this that works with Tuya/SmartLife https://c.mi.com/thread-2276510-1-0.html From what I understand Xiaomi/Mi products aren't compatible. Any help would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Jul 2020 09:55 PM PDT Hi everyone, What sort of IC environmental sensors would be the most valuable to you all in your quest for home automation? I currently am working with T/RH, C02, VOC and PM2.5. Anything else that would be valuable for evaluating and acting to improve internal air quality? [link] [comments]

Fastest polling time for energy monitoring plug Posted: 02 Jul 2020 07:10 PM PDT I'm currently using a smart plug (wall wart) from Aoetec that has power metering for one of my automations but I've noticed that the "resolution" of its ability to detect when power consumption ends is pretty much shit. In this automation that's not really an issue but I'm brainstorming another routine which simply can not work unless the plug is able to report and respond more or less immediately once energy consumption ends. As always I'm open to suggestions for alternative ideas in pursuit of the end goal but this is one of those "when the only tool you have is a hammer.....every problem starts to look like a nail" situations. I have implemented a scene in SmartThings called "Movie Time" which adjusts the lighting in the kitchen and living room to facilitate us watching the television. In addition to adjusting the lighting it also sets a custom location state in ST (also called movie time.....just to stay consistent). My idea was to use power metering to detect whether or not the TV is on so that when the house is in Movie Time and the TV is turned off the lighting changes again back to a bright setting. Think movie theater. When you go to the movies you sit in the theater and the lighting is bright. You can everything. Then as the movie begins the lights go down so the theater becomes quite dark. Once the movie ends and the credits are rolling the lights come back up in order to facilitate the audience exiting the theater without stumbling around in the dark. My Movie Time scene is similarly dim and turns off any lighting that causes a glare on the screen. Trouble is, if we are watching TV close to bedtime, we sometimes merely shut off the TV and go straight to bed. This leaves the lighting in the dim setting so the next time we turn the lights on in the morning they return to the dim scene even though we meant for it to be bright so we can cook breakfast for instance. The simple solution would be to create a rule that says if its after a certain hour of the morning (for instance the time our alarm goes off) then the lights come on at full brightness but I think we all know there's no point in doing things the easy way when you can over complicate things and waste a week trying to fix it when it doesn't work, right? So back to the question at hand. The power metering plug I'm using currently can sometimes take literally a minute or three before it notices that there is no load and decide to turn itself off. Obviously a delay that long would never work for my movie scenario because in two minutes we could easily not only have turned off the TV but also have left the room before it registers that it has no load. If I tried to create the automation with that situation the lights would come on after we've left the room making it useless. I'm sure there is a ton of potential for refinement of the concept but for now the barrier seems to be getting the light to change the moment we turn off the TV indicating that it's time for us to be able to see. I think motion sensors would provide WAY too many false positives for them to be useful in this scenario since they would detect any shift of us changing positions on the couch or crossing and uncrossing a leg or whatever. If; house state is Movie Time And; load drops below threshold of active television Then; lighting changes to bright Else; do nothing More or less. Anyone have any bright ideas on how to achieve real-time monitoring of power consumption such that a change is detected the moment it drops off rather than only checking in every 3-5 minutes? Advantage of Shelly vs Smart Switch? Other than price? Posted: 02 Jul 2020 05:45 PM PDT I'm having trouble wrapping my head around what the advange of something like the Shelly 2.5 gives you over a smart switch. Can someone dumb it down a bit for me? I was thinking of replacing some 3 way dimmer switches in my kitchen with smart switches, then came across the Shelly and don't understand the differences between the two, other than their actual form factor and installation. How to control a Sonoff/ESP8266 from the LAN, but without losing cloud access? Posted: 02 Jul 2020 05:25 PM PDT Wish to control a Sonoff S26 over the LAN, e.g just via HTTP or a curl request...so it can be automated from linux bash scripts... But: also wish to also maintain control via eWeLink app - I still need an easy way to toggle the device from my phone, from the internet. I could install Tasmota or ESPEasy etc, but then I lose the cloud access... Any way to have cake and eat it to? :-) If the Sonoff devices had a simple "allow unauthenticated http requests from LAN IP's" that would be perfect for my usage case. [link] [comments]

Lenovo smart globe not connecting to WiFi Posted: 02 Jul 2020 05:09 PM PDT Hi all, As the title says my smart globe is not connecting to my wifi. Router is dual band but my phone is connected to 2.4 channel and I've even disabled the 5ghz channel to test that. I've tried all different set up options I can think of and suggested on their site. Does anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong or should try? Thanks in advance [link] [comments]
How best to implement leaving a room and getting lights to turn off? Posted: 02 Jul 2020 09:36 AM PDT Hi guys, Getting into home automation a bit more as shouting at Alexa has gotten counter-productive after a few months and wondering what was the best way to implement this. For example: I have an Office and Living Room where I can get the lights to turn on when I walk past a motion sensor but I can't have it auto turn-off if there's no motion detected because if I'm working i'll be at the other end of the room sitting down in the Office and likewise in the Living Room i'll be sat on the sofa most likely (sensor would be in the hallway as it's used to turn the hallway lights on too). I was wondering if there was a way to get the lights to turn off when I walked past the sensor and left the room. I understand I'd maybe have to get a plug to act as a switch as well so the lights didn't turn off prematurely but just looking for some help and if anyone else has set this up? I would be using SmartThings to set this up, I'm also trying to keep the cost low by making the most out of my motion sensors by controlling multiple rooms with one sensor (Hallway + Living Room for example). Posted: 02 Jul 2020 04:45 PM PDT Can someone point me to a resource which compares/contrasts these two Shelly Dimmers: All I can find on the Shelly website is the Dimmer 2. On the support site I see a reference to the SL. Which model is the first one? What are the differences between the models? [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Jul 2020 10:21 AM PDT So I'm looking to do a home renovation and I'm looking to make it as smart as I can. I need help because it has become too complex. Thoughts/Things I'd like: Central panel (something like a tablet near the central entrance from which you can control anything smart in your home) Wi-fi peephole hd camera that can send live video to any device (tv,smartphone, pc monitor) but I prefer a model without a doorbell so it doesn't look like it's a camera from the outside just a normal peephole. I'd prefer using a smart doorbell (do they even exist?) working with IFTTT commands with the camera so when someone hits the doorbell camera turns on and sends video to devices (tv,smartphone etc) Tablet in the shower (waterproof or waterproof case) with which you can control lighting and music in the bathroom. Alarm system (i was looking at AJAX alarm system but can't figure out if it would cooperate with other smart things (like flashing red lights if an alarm is triggered, or just using for example the door detectors to control other smart devices like speakers/music/lights) Smart bulbs all over the house (maybe some smart light strips too) Smart relays like remotely turning on the water heater or a fan heater (for the bathroom) Air conditioning with sensors so temp is right just before you get home Which hub to use? I'd love if it could be locally (due to privacy reasons and preventing hacking) Also would it be possible to use an assistant like alexa/siri/whatever locally for voice commands? I'm paranoid thinking a company could use my personal data (voice, biometrics, face recognition). I would be cool if these things could work locally and not saving any data on the cloud though. Maybe speakers in every room too? (If they could play all at once or each one on their own [like different music in each room] would be great) Anything else I might be missing about the best smarthome please let me know! Posted: 02 Jul 2020 12:16 PM PDT I would like my AVR to stay on at all times, whether I'm currently in an activity that has the device or not. Is this possible? [link] [comments]
light works with regular dimmer but not smart dimmer Posted: 02 Jul 2020 03:21 PM PDT Using the CE Smart Dimmer and the lights won't dim at all (either off or 100% on). Guessing the load is too much as it is for 6 kitchen potlights, but could it be anything else? Thank you! [link] [comments]
New (tiny) house build, wanting a full smart set up - not wifi based, preferably. Posted: 02 Jul 2020 02:52 PM PDT Hi! New to home automation - so help me out and explain it all to me like I'm 5. I'd like to set up HA on my Raspberry Pi 3 B+ with maybe a small tablet mounted for control area. The downside here is I can't get good internet. If all else fails, I might cave eventually and get shitty satellite internet... but otherwise, I'm constantly running off a slowed speeds hotspot box.. hulu and netflix still play great on slowed speeds! Since I'm doing a new build, I want to put in all the smart outlets and switches I'll need. Just need to know for sure what to be looking at brand/model wise before buying it all.. If I read correctly, zigbee/z-wave will work independently without constant internet connection? Is that right? Are there others that will work the same or together, and maybe cheaper? Besides lights and some outlets, I'd like controls of the mini split, a smart door lock, a sensor by my gate (100' or so away?) to be some kind of alert warning trigger, and possibly a few cameras. I haven't fully grasped all the possibilities of automation controls yet to know what else I could possibly do.. but that's a start. I know it's a tiny house anyways so really it isn't that far to go to turn on/off light switches... but I am thinking more for certain triggers/ITTT type deals. Very open to suggestions! Bought a house with Honeywell lyric alarm system with window alarms and as wave lock Posted: 02 Jul 2020 07:30 AM PDT Is there a way to connect to Google home without monitoring services? From what I could find we would need to pay for a monitoring services which I would rather not do. The Yale lock has an ATT connection module already as well, if we can't control the lyric controller would I have to get a smart things hub for the Yale lock? It's not the nest one [link] [comments]
Best option to upgrade Z-wave firmware in a Samsung Smartthing setup. Posted: 02 Jul 2020 08:45 AM PDT My home network is z-wave network with a Samsung Smartthings hub driving the show. It doesn't look like there is a mechanism to upgrade the firmware of my switches. What are the best approach to upgrade the firmware of my Zooz or Innovelli switches? Thank you GT [link] [comments] |
