Best replacement for Google home in terms of automation/control? Posted: 01 Jul 2020 12:16 PM PDT I'm in the process of ridding myself of everything Google. I've been tied to the Google ecosystem for a long time but am just tired of dealing with Google's ADHD attitude toward products and how nothing seems to get attention after it is launched. The Google home app is terrible, Google Assistant barely registers any more and it frequently doesn't understand commands that it knows. I have most of my smart devices tied to Google Home which connects to Home Assistant but I'd like to take Google Home out of the equation. I'm not that familiar with all the options as I set this up a few years ago and haven't done much with it since then. I have Zwave lights and Zwave front door lock and Shelly wifi relays in a few light switches, a Meross garage door controller, and Abode security system with door sensors. Is there a good option to tie these together into Home Assistant and have voice control? I'm guessing Alexa is the only real alternative there but looking for any recommendations on how to move away from Google Home. Thanks [link] [comments]

Wifi Smartplugs - do they need an internet connection? Posted: 01 Jul 2020 06:54 PM PDT This is probably a very basic question but I cannot seem to find an answer- Do wifi smart plugs normally require access to the internet to function properly? ie. if the plug is connected to a private home network that does not have an external WAN connection to the internet can they still work? Or if they are connected to a network that normally does have internet access but the WAN connection is lost do you lose the "smart" functions? If a company goes out of business and shuts down their servers do their "smart" things go dumb? Basically what I am asking is do these smart wifi devices communicate locally on your lan or do they rely on the companies' infrastructure to perform? I want to make sure I don't spend the time/money on something that could go dark due to a company going out of business or just deciding the market is not profitable enough any more. Also I prefer to work with something that would continue to operate fully if my internet connection goes down at any time. thanks for any info you can share [link] [comments]
Centralize DC power supply panel Posted: 01 Jul 2020 06:44 PM PDT I would like to have multiple LED strips installed within the house, some at living room, bedroom, kitchen... Question: instead of hiding the dc power supply at the cornice at individual room, would it matter if I centralize these dc power supply at one location and then pulling the wire to each individual room led strips - advantage is that easy maintenance down the road should there a need to change out the power supply. Bought smart lights but I live in student accommodation and they won't connect to the internet Posted: 01 Jul 2020 05:43 PM PDT So I bought a Kogan (AUS) Smarter Home light but I can't connect it to the wifi as the wifi in my accommodation has individual log-ins and not just one password like the app asks me to input. Is there anyway around this or anyway to connect it to my Phone's hotspot? I don't mind if I can't turn it on and off whenever I want, I mostly just want to change the light colour to something that's not white. Anyone have any ideas? [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Jul 2020 08:55 PM PDT On this edition of Making This Old House Smart... For some reason the outdoor flood lights on my home are hardwired, no switches. They are cheap and ugly, with bulky motion sensors. What I would like to do is to replace them with 'flat' LED fixtures (or just something not ugly) that have ZWave/Zigbee capability, so I can control the lights with Home Assistant as well as physical ZW/Zig switches and ZW/Zig motion sensors (for controlling through HA I have a HUSBZB-1 sitting in my Amazon cart). What are my best options for hardwired fixtures that have inline ZW/Zig control? [link] [comments]
Recommendations on a thermometer/humidistat with connected app Posted: 01 Jul 2020 10:55 AM PDT I'm a musician and I recently refinished my basement into a playroom/office. We have a small house and a baby on the way, so the best use of space would be to move the instruments into the new basement office. That said, I have obvious concerns about monitoring humidity with string instruments in the basement. Google found a few products but I figured the hive mind here could give better recommendations. I would like to be able to monitor temperature and humidity on my iPhone, so that I can remove stuff if it becomes a problem. Thanks for any device recommendations! [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Jul 2020 08:31 PM PDT Hello all, I current own a Rachio sprinkler timer and have to disconnect the internet at the house. Will the Rachio continue with he current schedule without internet? If not, is there a way to set a default schedule for every day or two? [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Jul 2020 09:45 AM PDT Hello Reddit We have a bunch of hue bulbs, Lutron switches and Kasa smart switches tied in with a few google homes around our condo. We are looking into purchasing a new coffee machine which has smart features. Something like being able to detect motion at the bathroom sink between 8am-10am and start grinding beans+brewing a fresh pot of coffee. We would probably have to ensure that the machine is loaded with adequate with water/beans. Are there options on the market for coffee machines capable of tying into smart home setups? Options for automating a switch without a neutral white? Posted: 01 Jul 2020 07:53 PM PDT The switch controls my sunroom light and ceiling fan. I'd like to be able to control it with Google Assistant. Are there any viable options without the neutral wire? [link] [comments]
temperature sensor for automation Posted: 01 Jul 2020 05:29 AM PDT I have a ceiling fan in my bedroom which gets poor air circulation compared to the rest of the house. My goal is to trigger the fan to turn on once the temperature in the room reaches a certain point. At the moment nothing about the room is "smart". I will be installing a smart switch and was looking at the Lutron Caseta, but I am not tied to it. Any switch will do. I am more concerned about the temperature sensor. Preferably I would like a simple thermometer/clock that has wifi capabilities. I really don't want to have to get a sensor that requires a hub. If I have to go down that route I might as well get another HUE since I already have a motion sensor. I just don't know if the temperature feature on the HUE is worth getting into. Any recommendations? [link] [comments]
Best way to automate wall fan with 3-way pull switch. Posted: 01 Jul 2020 11:14 AM PDT Trying to automate one of these, adding temperature sensors as well. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TK98MVV Its 120v mains powered, and controlled via a 3-way (off/exhaust/intake) pull-cord switch. I was thinking of doing the following: Sonoff TH10 with the 4-pin TRRS to power a relay board and one of the GPIO to a Ds18b20 and the other to control the relay. That gives me off (via the Sonff relay), and intake/exhaust toggle. Look ok, or can someone thing of a better cleaner way? [link] [comments]
Matinance cost between Echo vs Google Home Posted: 01 Jul 2020 06:35 PM PDT Hello! I'm new, just have a question! I want to pick either an Echo or Home, mostly for music and simple usage. I'm not very techie. But are there monthly costs to have access to amazon or google, to play music in their platforms or whatever? Thanks for your insight! [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Jul 2020 02:46 PM PDT Hi - My mother in law needs to get a voice automated house set up in Nelson NZ. Due to ms she is wheelchair bound and needs voice controlled lights, speakers etc. I was supposed to go and get this done but due to covid couldn't travel, and its getting critical now to get this done. We use Google for everything here in my house so hoping i can get her set up with google home as well. Knowing nothing about the NZ landscape, is google even available? If not what are the alternatives? Any help would be welcome. [link] [comments]
Do there exist mains power interconnect panels ? Details ... Posted: 01 Jul 2020 04:36 PM PDT I don't have solar panels right now, but we will get some in the next 18-24 months. I am thinking of installing a propane powered generator in the very near future. At the same time, I have a 3000 watt inverter in my truck that powers quite a bit ... and in a pinch, we have access to a decent sized gasoline generator. And getting a little sillier, we have a fully charged Chevy Bolt in the garage and that is a LOT of power ... I'll bet in pinch, you can connect to that. What am I getting at with all of this ? If we want to be flexible and resilient in the face of week-long utility power outages (California) and fire shutoffs and just normal power outages, it would be nice to have a variety of electrical inputs for the house and the ability to opportunistically use whatever electricity source we happen to have available. So ... right now, my only power input into the house is mains power, from the utility, from a pole, into my main breaker panel. It is hard wired, it is fixed, and there is no flexibility there. Does there exist an interconnect panel of some kind that I could put at my main panel that would have a lockout "selector" that I could move between various power inputs ? I know this exists in the form of utility/solar - people have lockout transfer switches and they can move their homes power from utility grid to their own solar panels. What I am wondering is, can I get a lockout transfer switch that has 3 or 4 or 5 options, some of which are NOT hard wired and would allow me to connect a generator or my big inverter (after turning off almost all of my breakers, of course) or a different generator that we roll out of storage or ... we disconnect the battery pack from the Bolt and connect it to the house ? (Yes, the Bolt idea is ridiculous, but I am trying to get across here the notion of a power input panel, or transfer swich, that is a real swiss army knife) Very happy to hear any comments or suggestions or criticisms here. Thank you. [link] [comments]
Best way to control Ikea Roller Shades with SmartThings and Google Home Posted: 01 Jul 2020 07:15 AM PDT I have about 20 sets of Ikea roller shades spread out thru about 10 different rooms in the house. When I connect them thru the Smartthings hub, I can build group automation and make them come up and down at sunset and when we wake up, etc. I have smartthings connected to google home, but the shades don't show up as an object that can be shared with google, so they don't show up in google. I can create a scene in ST and then call that thru google home, but i have to manually create scenes for each room and/or shade in order to call them thru the google homes with voice commands. I also bought the IKEA bridge. It works to connect and then they do show up in Google Home, which does allow for voice control, but I lose some of the automation options from ST (GH routines can only be time based or command based, and not based on Sunrise / Sunset, or whether i'm home, etc. ) So I'm stuck with partial functionality one way or the other. Is there any way to expose the Shades thru ST so that I can have the best of both worlds? [link] [comments]
Looking for a wired wifi camera for outdoor home security Posted: 01 Jul 2020 03:43 PM PDT Hey everyone With two young kids that love to play in our rear garden, my wife & I want to install a wired CCTV camera that will wirelessly record to either our iCloud or Google storage accounts. Camera should support high quality recording including ability to record in night and day. I've used old school cameras before they rely on Chinese apps for remote login - these have been quite crappy so would ideally like our new camera for the family home to have a reliable & well supported app. Here's our rationale:
I've seen really cool products from Nest and Ring but am put off by being tied into ongoing subscription fees. There's also Netatmo Presence which seems to tick all the boxes but online reviews haven't been so positive re build quality and aftersale issues (warranty is only 12 months). Can anyone recommend the best wired wifi outdoor security camera I should go for? [link] [comments]
Home automation start - Recommendations Please Posted: 01 Jul 2020 05:13 AM PDT Hi All, Im starting my journey down the rabbit hole with Home automation. I want to map out everything i want to do and take the most effective route to get there. I want it to be relatively cheap and simple to use. Understandably i imagine this cant always be the case I currently have a Synology nas, so i guess i could load hass.io on it, but it looks like its a really complicated kit. I like the idea of a dashboard and that its "selfhosted" however i believe there is a monthly cost for google assistant integration? I have a feeling that this will more than likely be the most adaptable but i dont want to spend months trying to set it up I dont know much about smartthings and hubitat but it doesnt seem like they cater for the cheaper end of sensors such as sonoff and xiaomi Mija. Homekit is a def no as im not in the apple ecosystem. I do want a voice assistant so i guess its going to be either google or alexa. Not sure how good alexa is but im having problems with my Broadlink rm mini 3 and google, seems that i can only turn my tv on and off with this (Maybe a broadlink problem?). Though i do have android auto for the car so im not too sure if i want to move away from google. I love the idea of telling the system to do somthing. Here are some basic ideas i have. Workout routine> Downlights turn on in garage > Spotify playlist starts Good night google> Turn off TV> Turn on lights to 5% brightness, turn off in 5 min> Google asks what time to set alarm>Lock all doors Morning routine> Lights get brighter for 15min until they reach 100% (Alarm clock time)> Alarm sounds> Kettle turns on. Currently i have a yeelight, broadlink rm mini 3, Chromecast audio & nvidia shield. I;d like to integrate these if i can? I would really like some advice and recommendations on how to set this up. Products, hardware software anything basically. Thanks [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Jul 2020 07:56 AM PDT I was thinking about getting a smart switch and came across Broadlink TC2 but it needed an rm pro hub to be able to use it. I found that there are three hubs. RM Pro /RM Pro+ /RM4 Pro. What are their differences and advantages. Also could they work with Hassio and google home to control the Broadlink switches and also something like the AC, TV ect if I can configure them the the hub. [link] [comments]
