    Sliding glass door smart lock?

    Sliding glass door smart lock?

Hi all. Looking for some advice on securing a sliding glass door on my back patio. Currently, I have a simple interior locking latch system installed:

    My current setup

I'd like to replace this with a smart lock but it seems options are slim for smart sliding door locks. My goals:

    - Be able to leave my house through the back sliding door and lock it behind me

    - Be able to enter my house through the back sliding door without a key on me

That's about it! Even though I use a Nest × Yale lock on my front door and I'm happy with it, I am strongly considering just going with a mechanical keypad lock which would solve my problems (a la https://www.amazon.com/Sliding-Password-Digital-Mechanical-Kitchen/dp/B07WLQY8PV/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=keypad+sliding+door+lock&qid=1593540265&sr=8-4 )

I'm just super unfamiliar with replacing a door lock and this will be my first time so I'm mostly looking for advice from people who might have installed a lock like this and/or cautionary tales for me. I don't know whether this door would support a lock like I linked above and I'm worried I'll buy something that would not fit!

    Thanks!

    WiFi Smart Energy Meter

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 06:48 PM PDT

I have a desire to monitor the energy usage and on/off times of some devices (Refrigerator, Freezer, Sump Pumps, etc). I want to monitor that they are indeed running (periodically cycling on/off) and keeping up with the energy usage would be interesting as well.

I'm just starting to get into home automation and haven't fully stood things up, so I'm kinda new to this.

Has anyone ever successfully interfaced a home automation system to anything like this:

Tuya Single Phase 65A Din Rail WIFI Smart Energy Meter

These things and similar devices are all over ebay and aliexperess.

For what it's worth I'm doing Homebridge.

August Doorbell Cam Pro trigger TP - Link

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 11:59 PM PDT

Just got my August Doorbell Cam installed. My front porch light is controlled by a tplink smart switch. Is there a way to set it up so between certain times if the doorbell is pressed the light turns on? Or possibly when it detects motion?

    Thanks

    Electrical tinted glass

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 11:26 PM PDT

    Hi,

I recently flew with a new Boeing Dreamliner where they have these neat tinted smart glass, electrochromic I believe is the correct term.

    https://youtu.be/y5P1_OQyn_0 (example)

Does anyone know of a home use version of these? I'm not talking about smart glass that is on/off switching between transparent and opaque.

What I'm looking for is the scaling tint.

From what I can gather the airline type is made by Vision Systems, but no success finding a home use version.

    Z-Wave Dimmers

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:28 PM PDT

I have about a half a dozen zwave dinners already in my home, either Leviton or GE 1st Gen. Both operate perfectly with my LEDs. I've been looking to add a few more, and I'm thinking about picking up the GE 2nd Gen dimmer. However, about every third review seems to indicate that there is some sort of incompatibility with dimmable LEDs and the GE 2nd Gen dimmers.

Anyone use the 2nd Gen? Have the kinks been ironed out? If not, any suggestions on a zwave dimmer? I will need three way functionality. I do intend to run with a neutral.

Looking to hoard all your good ideas for myself! LOL.

What is your: - Favorite routine or automation you've setup? - Most used? - The one you can't wait to show people? - The one that's not very cool but would be super frustrating if it stopped working? - Got anything for pets? (Dogs and aquariums here.)

Let me know if I missed anything! I love hearing about all the cool things you guys setup!

So it looks like this new device is starting to ship slowly for those with irails. Anyone got shipping notification yet, or the device?

    First impressions?

Any way to make current auto blinds smart?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 08:02 PM PDT

I currently have automatic blinds from levolor. I'm pretty sure they can only be controlled from the remote. Is there any way I can make these smart without getting new blinds?

Wyze Door Sensors with Aeotec Z-stick?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 07:07 PM PDT

    Hey all,

Trying to learn more about setting up a z-wave system in my apartment. So far, I'm thinking of using the Aeotec Z-Stick with a raspberry pi and home assistant.

My question is this: will the Wyze door sensors work with this setup, or will I need the Wyze sense hub and camera to get the door sensors speaking to the system, and in that case I wouldn't need the pi at all. Thanks for any help you all can provide!

    Ubiquiti motion detection vs Ring

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 06:34 PM PDT

I currently have a ring doorbell pro and ring floodlight, I'm happy with them and now want to expand and install 2/3 PoE cameras (Ring camera elite or Ubiquiti Gen 3).

I'm not thrilled about the prospect of paying monthly, forever.. but can Ubiquiti offer enough?

Motion detection for me is important, I only want to look at footage if I need to, I don't want to have to scan through lots of false alerts. I've read that Ubiquiti detects based on pixel change so anything from rain to bugs will set it off, whereas Ring has some AI services to only alert on people (it has worked pretty flawlessly).

Will I be bombarded with false alerts if I go the Unifi Protect route?

Any other non subscription offerings that can offer good motion filtering?

    Robots for Mopping?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 10:40 AM PDT

    Hi All!

I've been looking into buying a robot mop, and was hoping for some suggestions!

A few years back, I got a cheap Roomba vacuum, and although it was able to do the "vacuuming" part well, it bumped into all my furniture, knocked lamps over, and generally caused problems. Ended up getting rid of it after it broke one of my lamps.

I recently heard that robot mops (and vacuum + mops!) are much better now. And I was hoping for some suggestions. Some of the issues I'm worried about are:

    • I have "bumps" in the floor between rooms where the floor changes. I've read that the iRobot Braava series can't get across those bumps, so that option is out.
    • I've got some carpet separating rooms, so need it to be able to cross the carpet (or better yet even clean it)
    • I have black carpet and furniture, which I've heard some models have problems with. But also no stairs, so I've read covering the cliff sensor can help with this?
    • I don't want it bumping into my furniture. I don't want to babysit my vacuum - that's no better than vacuuming myself

From what I've read, it looks like the only option that hits all the above requirements (especially that not bumping into furniture part) is the Roborock S6 Max. I could definitely appreciate the robot also vacuuming for those carpeted areas... But it's so expensive! Is this really the only option?

Can you use a pre-wired speaker connection to run power to other things?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 06:10 PM PDT

My house is pre-wired for speakers in the ceilings, both inside and outside. Is it possible to use the speaker wiring to instead run power to an outlet (possibly on the ceiling) or to power a device like a security camera (for outside).

    Thanks

Send email/push/other notification/etc to phone when computer wakes from sleep (not log in)?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:08 PM PDT

Is there a way to send a notification when my PC wakes up from sleep mode? I have a windows 10 box that I want to keep WOL enabled, but when I have WOL enabled it will randomly wake up all the time. It's a noisy PC and it's annoying to have it wake up, waste electricity, etc but the only way I can keep it from waking up on its own is to disable WOL.

Is there a way I can make my PC recognize when it wakes up and send a notification somehow? Then I can just send a sleep signal from my phone and it'll be fine. Unfortunately this won't get it logged in, so I don't think I can use the windows task manager (or can I?)

I'd rather not do something hacky with an arduino/rpi in line with the power LED or anything like that, but I've considered that as an option.

Multifunction remote for Hue & Caseta?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 05:32 PM PDT

Is there a remote that I could use to control both Hue and Caseta gear? I have the Pro Caseta hub. I have a pico remote, and obviously the apps work, but I am thinking of my 6 year old. I have hue lightstrips along the underside of her bed along with a Caseta dimmer for the overhead light. I'd like to be able to have a single remote she can use to play with both sets of lights.... you know, to scare the monsters away :)

I don't currently have SmartThings or a Hubitat, though that is definitely on the list. Open to all suggestions... thanks!

    Smart 'lock' for dog door?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 05:17 PM PDT

Hello! I am in the process of building a dog room in the space under my stairs. I would love to have a small door that I can unlock, or even better actually open and shut, through Alexa. It seems like smart locks are all made for front doors and will only allow Alexa to unlock them with a pin, which is a little clunky. Any ideas? I can run power to the door if needed.

    Schlage Connect Z-Wave to Homekit

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 01:07 PM PDT

I'm wondering if there's a way to get a Schlage Connect z-wave deadbolt connected to HomeKit directly, either by replacing the network card or by using the Schlage Wifi Adapter? For example, I know that Yale has a HomeKit module that you can add to some of their locks, and Yale and Schlage share a lot of technology.

Currently I go thru SmartThings, to Homebridge to get it on HomeKit. It works well but I'm considering eliminating SmartThings where I can (to go local as much as possible). Any better ideas on getting the deadbolt closer to HomeKit?

New home being built, get to spec all the smart home products.

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 04:18 PM PDT

I get to choose mesh wifi system, doorbell video camera, security cameras, thermostat, door locks, and hub.

I'm think about just telling them to go with 100% Nest products, but i'm not sure about compatibility with other services, so maybe i should go 100% smartthings?

Smart Multi-Sensor Thermostat Recommendations for Uniting Separate Heating and Cooling Systems

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 03:17 PM PDT

    (cross-posted at r/HomeImprovement, not allowed in r/HVAC)

I live in an old house (1400 sq ft, 2-story rowhouse) with hot water radiators that are mostly original and central AC that was added much later. The thermostat for the heat is on the first floor and the thermostat for the AC is on the 2nd floor. Both thermostats are entirely independent of each other and it's pretty much impossible to run wires from one location to the other. Both systems are single-stage and have a single zone for the entire house and, for a few different reasons, neither one does a good job of distributing the heating/cooling evenly.

What I would like is a thermostat system that can be attached to both the furnace and the AC, be controlled from a single place *without having the wires terminated in the same place*, have multiple sensors placed around the house, and prioritize certain sensors on a schedule (e.g. bedroom at night, living room during the day). Control from a wall panel is a must have; control from a phone/mobile app is nice to have; control from a locally-served (i.e. non-cloud) web site would be nice, too. I do not want the system to depend on cloud services for basic functionality; I intend to disable access from outside the house.

Because of where the AC is located (on the roof) and how its wiring is run, the wall panel and/or the controller for the AC would most likely have to live where the current AC thermostat is placed. The furnace is located in the unfinished basement, so there's more flexibility in relocating its controller either in the basement or on the first floor. But I still can't fish wires between the first floor and second floor without a bunch of house surgery I'm not willing to do, so I need a system that can control multiple systems, with at least one being wireless.

Does this system exist? I've found systems that have some of those features, but nothing with all of them. The Honeywell Prestige IAQ / Redlink system looks like it might work, but documentation is scarce because it's only sold through installers. The devices are available all over ebay, but I don't want to buy them only to find out that it's like Crestron where you can't even program it without a dealer account.

    Send Alert to open windows

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 03:10 PM PDT

I live in an area that most people don't have air-conditioning. If it's a warm day, I'd like to open the windows as soon as the outside temperature is lower than the inside temperature. I have a nest. Is it possible to trigger a notification based on the nest temperature and a lookup of the outside temperature?

Smart switch for fan/light combo with pull chain?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 01:38 PM PDT

I have a fan/light in one of the bedrooms that's pull chain and on one switch. Switch has neutral.

I am going to replace the fan with a new one with a remote but I also want to be able to turn the light/fan on (don't care so much about fan speed right now) with Alexa/smarthings.

Is it possible to add a switch? Not sure about the wiring at the fan, but looking at the manual from the fan shows just a white and black wire. Not sure if I have a red wire up there. At the switch I have a black and a red wire (no 3 way in that room) and neutral all bundled.

Was looking at the Zooz Zen30.

Wait for the Inovelli switch to drop mid July.

Or get something like the Bond when I get the new fan with Rf remote.

Magic Home LED strip controllers can't connect to server

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 06:46 AM PDT

This has been driving me insane for the past week: I have two wifi led controllers for rgb strips, they are supposed to work with alexa and google and they did for a while, but some time ago they startedto only work on local network: In device manager the server icon is grey and the local icon is blue. If I go in remote settings there isn't shit I can do, everything I try to press gives me errors like device is offline, when it clearly isn't. I probably did like 20 resets of both controllers in my troubleshooting but everytime I add them back the server icon is gray, so no remote control. I tried to log off, uninstall the app, change device, everything you could imagine and have resolved totally nothing. I don't know how worth is it to go trough all of this for some 10 euros shitty controllers, might as well trow everything in the garbage and buy Philips Hue. If someone had the same issue and managed to get around please help me, thanks a lot.
