NFC tags and babies, especially twins Posted: 29 Jun 2020 04:11 PM PDT I am a mom of 5 month old twins. For the uninitiated, the whole 'taking care of infants' thing revolves around routines and knowing how long it's been since something happened. I also pump (breast milk) and it has to be on a dedicated schedule. Early on, I started using the Hindsight app to log these events so that I could just say 'Hey Siri I'm pumping... I'm feeding this baby... I'm changing that baby' etc. Well today I automated it all with NFC tags and I wanted to share. I stuck one on my pump, two on the bottle warmer (one for each twin), two by the changing table. When scanned they make the entry in Hindsight for me and the tag on my breast pump also starts a 3 hour timer. Maybe this will help out a fellow geeky mom or dad like me! :) [link] [comments]

Smart Hurricane / Camping lantern Posted: 30 Jun 2020 12:55 AM PDT I'd like to get some hurricane lantern style LED lamps for my garden - but I'd also like them to be controllable with my home assistant setup. Does anyone know of a way battery operated lights such as this could be controlled - over WiFi or similar? Thanks! [link] [comments]

Ecobee for Radiant Heat and Central AC Posted: 29 Jun 2020 06:43 PM PDT Our house is two floors. We have radiant heat throughout the house and just had central AC installed after moving in (two different zones). Can an ecobee thermostat control the AC system and the Radiant heat system at the same time or will I need to have a separate thermostats for each system? Note - i know I'll need two thermostats for the two AC zones, just trying to figure out if the same thermostat can control both AC And heat. [link] [comments]
Best Video Doorbell that is wireless and has local storage Posted: 29 Jun 2020 10:26 PM PDT Must have: 1) battery operated / wireless 2) local storage / no subscription Would like for it to have: 1) Alexa compatible 2) Free Door Chime 3) No Bridge I would like to spend less than 150 I have tried some no-name / knockoff brands: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B082YDRWFR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 This one had everything but Alexa but I was really unhappy w/ the app. It took forever to go from motion detection to a notification on my phone. It also missed some people, especially the mailman, coming to my house. So I want a better app experience. I have an iphone SE. Currently Alexa is running the house with Wyze everything and Nest thermostat. Thank You [link] [comments]
Low-Latency Whole Home Audio with multi input / output Posted: 29 Jun 2020 01:50 PM PDT Hi everyone, I'm trying to build a whole home audio solution. I am a software developer with carpentry and limited electrical experience. A turn-key solution would be acceptable if it can fit my requirements, though I have a feeling that's not going to be the case. If I need to whip-up some raspberry-pi's and write some code, that's totally okay. Does anyone have any ideas on where I should start for something like this? I'm toying with some topologies currently, however I figured it best I start more high-level. Requirements:
With community input, I would love to document this so others could get some ideas. I found the topic to be rather painful to research, so I'd love to mitigate that for future audiophiles seeking such a solution [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Jun 2020 02:54 PM PDT So I just saw an ad for the Level Lock (https://level.co/products/level-lock) and it's pretty intriguing, I hope to see more solutions like this as I would rather keep my existing lock cylinder system. Anyway, I don't like smart locks, at all. I honestly don't want one until I have some use case where I need it. I like my regular old deadbolt the way it is. I would however be interesting in somehow adding or replacing it to have status of the dead bolt position (Locked or unlocked) so I could setup something in Home Assistant to remind me to lock the door if I accidentally forget to lock it. Anyone have a good solution for this? I'd imagine it would involve a z-wave door sensor with contacts that I can connect some sort of sensor to, next to creating a circuit between the bolt and the strike plate :) Speaking of which, I would be interested in how people might have incorporated electronic strikes into their front door too, that might be another way to solve my problem. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Jun 2020 03:04 PM PDT What apps or smart contraptions are you using to increase the tech factor of your brewing? I run Android/Google Home on the smart home side and am currently brewing via extract (though I plan to move to all grain this fall) [link] [comments]

Posted: 29 Jun 2020 05:21 AM PDT Hi all I'm in the very early stages of starting a new home build and want to integrate as much 'smart' as possible from the build stage to save retrofitting later. Wondering if there's anyone out there who has had experience integrating 'smart' into a new build and what kinds of things I should think about or be aware of. A few things I'm already thinking about: Smart bulbs vs smart switches Smart outlets - how many are really needed or do I add the smarts letter with a board/outlet plug. Any obvious oversights here or opinions on the above? Might be worth mentioning I'm located in Australia. Cheers in advance for any input! EDIT: Spelling and Presentation [link] [comments]
What are the options and ideas for HomeAutomation in India. Posted: 29 Jun 2020 10:49 AM PDT Asking for a friend. I(from USA) am working on exploring a local hub(HA and OH), as a part of that happened to talk to a friend in India. He was so overwhelmed but sad that these all can't be done in India with some geographical challenges. We are trying to understand what in general people from India are developing beyond Google home speaker (and Alexa speaker)? I initially felt like can there be differences b/w USA and India? But seems like it is.. [link] [comments]
Building new home. Need advice. Control4 or ? Posted: 29 Jun 2020 10:09 AM PDT We have control4 in our current home. Amazing when it works, frustrating when it doesn't. Annoying when I have to call the dealer to add or change anything. We are building a new home and I'd LOVE to do it right from the beginning. Ideally, I'd love some kind of modular system where I can one one company for one thing and another for another, shifting over time as new technology emerges. I felt very restricted by control4, but my dealer tells me my system is old (10yrs now) and the new stuff is far more reliable. But then I look at the 50 or so control4 light switches we installed on our current house, and he tells me they won't work with anything other than control4. So it seems like a massive commitment that locks you in. So going with control4 for our new home feels like a mistake, but I'm not sure who to go with? Another company similar to control4? Modular? If so, what can tie it all together? And finally, as we're planning the new build, what recommendations do you have? What wiring or steps should we take during framing that will save us headaches down the road? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Is it possible to use old wiring for motion sensors to power an ipad wall panel? Posted: 29 Jun 2020 09:43 AM PDT I moved into my home a few months ago and it was prewired with an old brinks security system. I already owned a nest system and elected to continue using that. I have recently started using Home Assistant and want to set up control panels in a few locations. Currently using an old Ipad I had lying around. These locations have wiring in place for motion sensors for the old system. Does anyone know if I could repurpose this wiring to power the Ipad rather than plugging it into an outlet or running wire for some other power source like POE? [link] [comments]
Your thoughts on Home Assistant / OMV setup Posted: 29 Jun 2020 08:53 AM PDT After two days of stressfully troubleshooting an install of OpenMediaVault, I finally got it all working; running docker and portainer with HomeAssistant. To my dismay, it appears as though HomeAssistant has moved away from the docker configuration very recently and most of the features that make HomeAssistant great are unavailable or difficult to implement in the docker version. I really like my OMV setup and so I was considering other options for Home Assistant to play nice. I'm thinking that it could work to install Virtualbox through OMV and install HomeAssistant there. Before I potentially waste a bunch of time on this, I was hoping I could get some opinions or testimonials on my approach. [link] [comments]
DIY Security/Home Automation System Recommendations? Posted: 29 Jun 2020 07:37 AM PDT I used to have a SmartThings system but the hub crapped out and I just haven't bothered replacing it as I wanted to check into my options. This time around I want something kind of security centric but able to easily expand into basic home automation scenarios. While a bit dated, I've considered just getting the SmartThings security/hub combo as I know it will work with my current smart home items (Kwikset Obsidian smart lock, Leviton smart switch, and GE smart plug - all are running on z-wave). The reviews look to be decent but it looks like there might be some more recent options that are better. The Ring security system looks pretty decent at a good price. I like Simplisafe but it doesn't do anything beyond security and practically no 3rd party support. Honeywell seems to be a decent option as well. I basically just want a simple security system that integrates with my current z-wave options and has some level of expandability into home automation situations. Google Assistant compatibility would also be ideal but not a big deal as long as I can use one app to control all security and home automation scenarios. Thanks for the help! [link] [comments]

Posted: 29 Jun 2020 06:36 AM PDT I came across Candle smart home (link) recently and it looks quite interesting. I am wondering if anyone around here has tried it and how it compares with Home-Assistant and open HAB for example? [link] [comments]
I need server/automation suggestions for my smart things and network shares. Posted: 29 Jun 2020 06:16 AM PDT So, I've tried Raspbian, Raspbian with homeassistant (python install), Hass OS, and even OpenHAB as of yesterday. None of them seem to be able to do what I need. I need an OS that can act as a hub for all of the smart things in my home (Chromecast, thermostat, Google nest, Google home mini). It also needs to be able to run a print server for my two printers (one is USB only, the other is wireless), and manage a 1tb network share drive. I don't think this is to much for my Pi 4, because almost all of these tasks are essentially idle tasks that will only stress the little beast when they become active. Any suggestions?
