Heliocron - a command line app that works with cron to trigger tasks relative to sunrise, sunset, dawn, etc

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 03:21 AM PDT

I have mentioned about Heliocron once in the past on this subreddit, but I thought I'd let people know that I've released a new version. In essence, this is a command line program which you can use with cron to schedule scripts to run at particular events i.e. sunrise, sunset.

A basic command might look like this, where turn-on-lights.sh is a simple script which does what it says on the tin:

$ heliocron --date 2020-07-06 --latitude 51.4769N --longitude 0.0005W wait --event sunrise && turn-on-lights.sh Thread going to sleep for 63214 seconds until 2020-07-06 04:51:48 +01:00. Press ctrl+C to cancel.

And to run this daily, a crontab entry would look like this:

    0 2 * * * heliocron --latitude 51.4769N --longitude 0.0005W wait --event sunrise && turn-on-lights.sh

Aside from just sunrise and sunset, you can now trigger events relative the civil, nautical and astronomical dawn/dusk.

I've also beefed up the documentation - see the readme in the Github repo for the full low down.

Why is a smart door lock utilizing qi /wireless charging not a thing?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 09:11 PM PDT

I hate changing batteries. Especially in winter when I would go through 4 a week. I want to always have pin code access for my 7-year old to always be able to get in the house, key or no key. And electric door strikes are way too much effort. It would be so nice to tap in to door bell wiring, mount a Qi charger on the frame side, then have the lock on a constant power and function like most smart door locks do now. Hell, use the new facial recognition door bell stuff and sell it as one kit to automatically integrate the two. All it would take is one drill bit into the inside wall.

Maybe I'm missing this somewhere and it's already available, but more likely someone will come in and tell me why it won't work.

Are there any RGB lightstrips that I can create/use preset scenery that are callable with Alexa.

    Posted: 06 Jul 2020 12:02 AM PDT

I have a RGB lightstrip that works with the app LampUX. I can change the color in the app, or use a premade scenery for example called "Dazzling" that do an animated RGB spectrum color from green to blue to red. The thing is that when I link that strip to my alexa, I can say stuff like "Turn the light Green" or "Dim the light to 50%" But I can't say "Turn the light to Dazzling scenery/mode", or create a custom command that launch the scenery "Dazzling" on the app.

If I'm not mistaken, a RGB Strip that I find working with alexa that works with scenery mode call is the LIFX light strip , because you can create "Scenes" and then you can call the scene with Alexa. (https://support.lifx.com/hc/en-us/articles/204074724). So you can pretty much create everything you want with their hub ex. the same Dazzling effect and then create a command to call it with alexa.

But this is the only one I could find. Since LIFX cost a lot, someone knows other light strips that could do that (Able to call different scenery with Alexa) ? Thanks a lot!

Can I trust a Xiaomi robot vacuum? Any robot vacuum suggestions?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 10:13 PM PDT

I am looking for a robot vacuum and have seen a lot of praise for the Xiaomi ones, but their brand worries me. I'm also wondering if I need to turn on features like Wifi - I mean, what does it need to be connected to the internet for? To use the app to tell it what room to vacuum?

I am new to this whole thing, having waited a while to get involved. Just looking for some help and guidance. I don't want to spend $1000, but I might be able to afford one in the $500 range if I have to. I want something that can clean a whole floor of my house without issue, four rooms.

    Home automation device database

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 01:47 PM PDT

Since it is not always easy to find devices that are compatible with Home Assistant or other home automation products, I've made a website to compare them. I'm still expanding the product portfolio. Using the website, it is easy to explore the products per category.

    http://smartdevicedb.com/

It is also possible to review items and each device comes with a list of properties that can be used to search.

For starters it can sometimes be hard to find out how to start in home automation. Which hub should you buy and which products are compatible with? To overcome this problem, I've created a survey that gives you automatic recommendations depending on your needs, budget, preferences, skills etc.

You can find the link in the following blog post.

Just finished the 0.65.27 version of KaithemAutomation, with PA system call-in over SIP, and native Arduino/RFM69 support!

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 09:14 PM PDT

    https://github.com/EternityForest/KaithemAutomation

Lots of new stuff here! If you've ever wanted to call a Raspberry Pi from a phone app and announcesomething over speakers (with a full effects chain you can control from the web!) you might want to check this out!

There's also beta voice recognition through gstreamer-pocketsphinx, but the quality of that is mostly only good for keyphrase recognition IMHO.

The core functionality of creating HTML dashboard pages and python if-then events from the web IDE is still there, and everything has been upgraded to use a much more git-friendly save file format. There's no database needed, you can see exactly what was created through the UI in plain text.

For actual production use(If you are that brave!), my EmberOS distro includes Kaithem and has everything pre-setup to show a kiosk browser without trashing the SD Card: https://github.com/EternityForest/EmberOS, but for testing, it's all pure python3, just git clone and run on Linux.

    Extend Liftmaster MyQ WiFi Antenna?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 07:20 PM PDT

I have a Liftmaster 8550W opener on my garage door. I live in a fairly dense neighborhood of rowhouses, and my garage is about 100 ft from the back of my house, so WiFi signal from my Orbi system there is only OK (it's not too weak, but it's not strong, either). Newer devices do fine with the WiFi, but older ones like this drop off the network from time to time. I've solved the issue with other devices in my garage (EV charger, security camera) by replacing their standard WiFi Antenna with a directional one and using an extender cable to move it for better reception. The garage door opener doesn't have an obvious external wifi Antenna, and inspecting the internals, there's several antennas attached to the main circuit board. Does anybody know which of these is the WiFi Antenna? Has anybody successfully replaced the WiFi Antenna on a MyQ device?

Edit: Just for some additional context, I've considered adding an outdoor orbi (my garage is detached and not climate controlled), but if I can solve this with a $20 external antenna like the kind I got for my wifi camera, that's preferable to the $100 - $200 (or more) of another orbi satellite or a couple reliable WiFi repeaters.

    Hive Products worth anything?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 06:54 PM PDT

I just received a bunch of Hive equipment from a coworker who got them from their home warranty company. I have a hub, a bulb, a door/window sensor, and a smart plug.

I see from the hivehome.com website that they are no longer supporting these devices themselves, and I assume the service and apps won't be active much longer.

Is there anything useful I can do with these? Re-flashing to openhab or something similar?

    Thanks,

Looking for a wall powered wireless door sensor for my shed (35c to -30c)

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 06:36 PM PDT

I'm looking to add some protection for my shed which has a door and window. I was thinking of some Z-Wave or Zigbee door sensor connected to my Home Assistant docker running on Unraid. It might even be WiFi as I think my 2.4Ghz networks reaches well enough. I dont have a Z-Wave or Zigbee hub yet but I was hoping something like a Conbee would work. From what I've read, I'm pretty sure I don't want a battery powered sensor where I live as winters get very cold. A wired sensor hooked up to my DSC panel is an option but it's pretty last resort and I even have a spare RPi 2B lying around. Any suggestions?

Hallway is too dark. How can I use philips hue to fix the issue?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 11:28 AM PDT

I have a hue hub and have used the hue motion sensors with good luck. How can I brighten the hallway with the right light temperature based on time of day? Whiter during the day, yellows at night, etc. Also hoping we can set the light(s) to turn on gradually. Thanks!

[QUESTION] 4 pin molex with RF relay

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 11:24 AM PDT

Hello, I have a question and I hope I can get a newbie friendly answer. Hope I'm posting in the right place. I have attached links to specific products/connectors I'm discussing for extra clarity. Thanks in advance for helping me get through this :)

At the moment I have a cupboard with 16 fans. These 16 fans are controlled by 4 STW fan controllers.
    https://www.banggood.com/STW-6041-CPU-Cooling-Fan-Speed-Temperature-Controller-for-Desktop-p-948577.html?cur_warehouse=CN

I power these 4 STW fan controllers with a spare PC power supply unit (PSU) I have. I bypassed the requirement for a motherboard to turn on the PSU (besides the point). Each fan controller is connected to the PSU using 4pin MOLEX connectors. https://www.dell.com/community/image/serverpage/image-id/30289i457D65D14DD19366/image-size/large?v=1.0&px=999

As you can imagine, having 16 fans on at all times is not great as it produces too much noise. Each fan controller cools a different set of devices for my theater equipment.

What I wanted to do was add 12V radio frequency (RF) relays. They would be set to self-locking.
I was looking at buying 4 of the following relay:
    https://www.banggood.com/Geekcreit-433MHz-DC-12V-10A-Relay-1CH-Channel-Wireless-RF-Remote-Control-Switch-Transmitter-With-Receiver-p-1040721.html?rmmds=search&cur_warehouse=CN

How would I get this to work? And which cables go where? (I have a rough idea, but I'm not sure if it would work and I don't want to blow anything up). Otherwise, what would be a better solution?

Hope you can help me with this, and explain it in the most newb friendly way possible...

Best way to automate bedside lamps?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 10:39 AM PDT

Got two bed side lamps that are connected to an outlet that is wired to the third switch on the wall.

I know Lutron Caseta has the lamp controller plug in but since the outlet is wired to the wall switch, would a standard Lutron Caseta dimmer switch work to control the lamps?

Flashing Tasmota on new Sonoff 4CH R3 & 4CHPRO R3 and recreating eWelink features

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 09:29 AM PDT

    Hi

I got my hands on new 4CH & 4CHPRO R3 series (review) and I got them flashed with Tasmota. I thought I will spend a little more time to add the eWeLink features like:

    • inching
    • interlocking
    • timers
    • smart assistant support

Done with NodeRED but could be easily applied to HASS.
