    Ambient TV Strip Options

    Posted: 06 Jul 2020 08:06 PM PDT

In search of a quality light strip for ambient TV lighting. I intend to line the back of my 65" TV and hook into SmartThings. I'm not looking for anything crazy. Huesync functionality would be cool but I'm not in the Hue ecosystem and not looking to invest at the moment.

Requirements: * Z-Wave or Zigbee (I have Z-Wave switches and sensors)

    • Controlable via Google Home and SmartThings

    • Quality color reproduction

    • Reasonably priced. Not cheap but not LifX or Hue prices.

    • Might be nice to be USB powered via my TV

    • Long enough to go all the way around 4 sides of the back of the TV

I've seen separate controllers and and strips recommended but get pretty lost with the strips themselves.

    What do you guys think?

Whole house full of wifi smart switches?

    Posted: 06 Jul 2020 09:47 PM PDT

I'm in the process of building a new house, and am trying to figure out which platform to use for smart switches. There aren't any switches that fit the faceplate style we have here in Europe (unless I want to pay 10+x more and go with KNX), so that means going for smart switch modules. So far it seems that a wifi based system (i.e. Shelly) is going to be the best in terms of price, ease of installation and maintainability (i.e. if something goes wrong I don't need to re-pair 10s of devices).

My only concern is how well wifi works as a platform for switches, and higher power drawer vs zigbee/zwave devices. I will have a separate wifi network, which will probably will be the only 2.4ghz network, and good quality hardware with multiple APs - but I'm still unsure how robust it will be in reality. Does anyone have any experience with a smart home with a large number (50+) of wifi smart devices?

As I'm building from scratch ideally I'd like something hardwired, but other than KNX (as I said before, 10+x the price) I haven't seen any options here.

    roborock s6 runtime

    Posted: 06 Jul 2020 06:46 PM PDT

Folks, I bought a roborock s6 a couple of days ago. After a full charge, it ran 82 minutes on Balanced mode and 95 minutes on Silent mode - nowhere near the advertised 150 minutes.

Is there anything I can do, to increase the runtime? What has your experience been like? I can't complete any floor of my house in one go - not happy with that. What other robot vacuum can I buy that has longer runtime?

    TIA

Digital instead of physical door keys for Tenant?

    Posted: 06 Jul 2020 06:21 PM PDT

I live in a 2 family house and plan on renting the top floor.

There is one shared main door that splits into separate door with it's own locks for each unit.

For the main door, i plan to installing a smart lock, which allows me to invite and grant permanent permission to open with their phone.

Should i just grant them access digitally instead of a physical key? The idea is it'll save me the hassle of re-keying or replacing lock when they move out. Thoughts?

    Thanks!

    Zigbee Occupancy Detection

    Posted: 06 Jul 2020 04:42 PM PDT

    Hey all,

Was thinking about having a small Zigbee sensor on peoples keyrings to mark them as home or not. So that when it was no longer responding to the network it would automatically turn on Alexa Guard and the SmartThings Home Monitor.

    Anyone doing something like that?

Also looking for a cheap Zigbee alarm buzzer.

    I'm in Australia

How do I find my z-wave switch/plug from Z-Wave PC Controller software?

    Posted: 06 Jul 2020 02:39 PM PDT

    Hello,

The main hub in my house is a Samsung SmartThings, I got a Aeotec USB stick and made it a secondary controller(can I post the instructions in a wiki somewhere here?).

Now I see the various switches, but just identified by Id #, how do I correlate a given Z-Wave switch to the logical name found in the SmartThing App? I went into the Smartthings Api portal and tried to see if I can derive it, but nothing looks obvious.

Can somebody shed light on how to go about this?

    Thanks!

Skyward AC unit (Tuya/Smart Life App controlled)

    Posted: 06 Jul 2020 02:19 PM PDT

    Hey fellow automators.

Recently bought a Skyward AC unit for my living room, installed the WiFi module and added it to Smart Life app but i don't see it in Google Home app.

Other Smart Life devices (bulbs and led strips) are shown and can be controlled.

Tried unlinking and relink and didn't work.

Anyone knows why this is happening?

    Thanks in advance!

Hey Google Turn off The Office Office TV: Help with Naming

    Posted: 06 Jul 2020 08:10 AM PDT

Hey folks, I have a small apartment with a living room/kitchen area and a second bedroom that serves as an office.

We have two TVs connected with chromecasts. Our main TV is in the living room of course.

    • TV
    • Office TV

So unfortunately we're having an issue where we can't just say "turn off the office TV". And I can't rename it to just TV because the apartment is so small that there's a significant chance the other homes will hear us and turn off the main tv.

Shelly 2.5 for light and fan?

    Posted: 06 Jul 2020 08:07 AM PDT

I just got a smartthings v3 hub for my birthday and I'm ready to dive in. All my bedrooms have a light and ceiling fan which operate on separate switches. Is it possible to wire the fan and light on the duel relay? I don't want speed control for the fan, just a simple on/off is fine. I really just want the lights to work but I figured since it's only $6 more for the duel relay I might as well hook up the fan too. I'm totally new at this and finding lots of good info but I can't find a solid answer for this situation.

    Front Entrance Camera (Not doorbell)

    Posted: 06 Jul 2020 11:05 AM PDT

So I have an indoor entrance inside that I would like to be able to have someone press a button to call and notify me via a software on my phone or computer. This would not be a doorbell but just something that can be plugged in via power and on my wireless.

What would be recommended for this? Everything I look for is a doorbell and requires power for something like that but I would want just a simple plug in power cable into a wall next to it.
