Nest doorbell to chromecast automatically? Posted: 16 Aug 2020 12:32 PM PDT Hello all, I'm trying to find a way to have my nest doorbell stream to my Chromecast automatically when the doorbell is pressed, my searches aren't turning anything up, I was thinking maybe through IFTTT but figured I'd see if anyone here has had any success [link] [comments]
New to smart plugs. Is there any way to get by this? Posted: 16 Aug 2020 01:01 PM PDT Hi there. I just bought an amazon Alexa and some smart plugs. Got the plugs to work to turn on my lamp on command but I'm having trouble with other electronics. I have an air purifier in the house. I connected it to a smart plug but when I turned it on with voice command, it only turned the power on, and I had to click the touch screen power button to actually turn it on. Is there any way to get by with electronics that need to be pushed manually? Kinda sucks I can't get it to just turn on just by a smart plug. Some electronics need to be pushed. Any advice? Is there such a thing as an automated tub cleaner? Posted: 16 Aug 2020 04:25 PM PDT There are a number of manual products that claim to clean your shower/tub by just spraying and leaving them. These seem to work well enough so long as you remember to use them quite regularly. I do not remember. The only thing I've seen even close to what I'm looking for is Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner. It's disappointing in a number of ways though:
Are there alternatives out there? [link] [comments]
Anyone who switched from zwave to Lutron light switches or vice versa? Why Posted: 16 Aug 2020 05:32 PM PDT I'm taking the dive, have settled on using home assistant. My first order of business is light switches. I really like open cross compatible platforms, as I don't like being tied down to one manufacturer. I understand I can use Lutron. Everyone seems to rave about them. I'd prefer to not use wifi switches and also prefer to avoid introducing yet another "hub" into my home. Not complaining about the lower cost of zwave either. I find many times people get something and love it so they recommend it. I'm interested in feedback from anyone who has tried both. Thanks! [link] [comments]

Posted: 16 Aug 2020 06:44 PM PDT So I have this touch switch https://www.amazon.com/Xd-613b-Touch-Switch-Metal-Source/dp/B06XRGPR1R Connected to my kitchen cabinet lights and the touch sensor wired to a cabinet hinge. Sounds weird but it works really well once you know where to touch. I'd like to add the ability to control the lights via zigbee or zwave (assuming there isn't a direct way with lutron or hue) besides using the touch sensor. I'm a bit new at this and not sure what I should be looking for. [link] [comments]
Failure/Fault Timer for Power Outages Posted: 16 Aug 2020 03:19 PM PDT Not sure if this is the best sub, but I am looking for a some kind of outlet-controlled power outage timer. I have a well-stocked deep freezer and I would like to know if I lost power (and if so, for how long) when I am out of town. Most things I have seen recommend an analog clock but if the power is out for more than 12 hours (which seems to be quite often) it could be hard to tell. I'm not sure if there is a product that does this or if maybe there is a way to do it via software, I just don't really know where to start. [link] [comments]
Too much automation or not Enough? Posted: 16 Aug 2020 09:50 AM PDT Hi everyone! So, I have been incorporating some very basic home automation for years. I have a Tuxedo Touch security keypad that has built in Zwave and can set scenes, etc. As such, I bought some Z-wave switches to mainly control some outside lights on timers and a couple lamps so my dog isn't in the dark if we came home late. Over the past month or so, I have greatly expanded my home automation (in my opinion) and now have about 15 dimmers and switches, additional outside pathway and landscape lighting, i changed my thermostat to an Ecobee, bought Sonos One's w/ Alexa to put in the main rooms of the house, and migrated off the Tuxedo touch to a Samsung Smartthings hub and then connected that to Alexa for voice commands. But a couple questions I have that I wonder if some of you face. Is there such as a thing as too much connected automation? So, what I mean by that is that I have looked around my house for items to integrate into my smartthings overall setup. Like I said, I've automated most light switches that would benefit from this, but I wonder, should I change the light switch on my kitchen pantry to a smart switch and add a motion sensor to turn it on automatically? I mean, in theory it sounds cool, but the door is literally right next to the light switch to turn it on. Is it too over the top to automate that? I have some items on more old school timers. For example, my backyard landscape lights are on a zwave switch, but my front yard is on an older school timer. The lights turn on consistently with the old school timer, but my desire to switch to the zwave setup is purely based upon the coolness factor of just having it integrated. Looking at the backyard lights as an example, I don't think I've ever turned them on/off remotely or done anything other than let the scheduled timer do its thing. This is essentially the same as the front yard, except the front yard is a dumb timer. I've also looked at changing my pool timer or irrigation pump timer to get it integrated to my z-wave setup. But both of them just run on the schedule as they are. Integrating them, while really cool, seems pointless and needlessly costly in reality. [link] [comments]
Meross Garage Door Opener connecting to blocked IP Posted: 16 Aug 2020 05:27 AM PDT I have some Google Safe Browsing function on my router and recently it started blocking an IP address once per day from my Meross Garage Door Opener. The IP address looks like it belongs to Microsoft, but also appears to possibly be a Tor Exit node which has me a bit concerned. Error from the router appears as such: Thoughts? Your experiences integrating home automation and security? Posted: 16 Aug 2020 12:27 AM PDT I am moving to a new apartment next month. It is bare and needs all new lights and devices. This is when I will start with home automation. I plan to start simple with a Philips Hue kit and hass.io running on a VM in my basement. Where I get stuck is that I would like a camera pointing at my apartment door and balcony. It seems there are no cameras that directly integrate and I guess this is due to their bandwidth requirements. The camera needs to make clear photos in case of motion. If it also has good video, where a person can be identified, that would be great. I'd like the camera to switch off when I am home and only run while the house is unoccupied or in 'sleep hours', hence the need for some level of smartness. Has anybody here some experience they can share with installing a camera into a simple home automation network, in this way? Many thanks [link] [comments]
Magic Home 5V - WS2812B Driver Posted: 16 Aug 2020 07:47 AM PDT Hi everyone, I tried to look from eBay, aliexpress, etc but couldn't find those magic home wifi 5v controllers. I liked the software which has 300 prebuild animations and they're quite cheap. I'm going to connect LEDs with home assistant and interested to hear if you have better choices for controlling "neopixel" LEDs. Now I have two Magic Home RGB controllers, one addressable Magic Home controller https://www.ebay.com/i/274097464508?ul_noapp=true but 12V and three H801 with Tasmota firmware. cheers. :) -juon4 [link] [comments]
Posted: 16 Aug 2020 05:27 AM PDT I'm looking at buying a robot vacuum, but it has to be able to handle German Shepard hair. I don't really like Roombas, I owned a Discovery when it was first released and it was a piece of shit. I've been looking at a Deebot T8 ATVI, S6MaxV, importing a Canadian Dyson Heurist, or a Neato D7. The ability to use the T8 and S6 to look at my dog when I'm not home is appealing as well. Ability to hold all that hair is nice too. Lastly, how hard would it be to 3D print some kind of attachment to get one of the self cleaning systems to hook up to my central vacuum? How is the Electrolux Pure i9 and Miele RX2? I used to own a trilobite and that was insane! [link] [comments]
