    Electrified mortise locks

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 07:15 PM PDT

Hi! Can anyone recommend a front door lock assembly for home automation new construction? To be controlled by a PLC based automation system (ie keypad) so we were looking at Schlage L9xxx electrified mortise. I'm unclear on the specific configuration to purchase and also what best practices are here. Off the top of my head it seems that a fail secure with deadbolt, exterior cylinder and interior thumb screw, where exterior knob functions only when electrified and interior knob functions always (egress). But seems like if I did that, the only way to leave the door unlocked during the day would be via programming (ie applying constant voltage so the exterior handle remains functional), at which point the deadbolt would be kind of meaningless. Maybe that's normal? Just wondering if anyone has any recs here, I'm sure this problem has been solved. Thanks!

Raspberry Pi Zero W as multi-sensor?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 08:15 PM PDT

I've been getting ready to start my first setup using hass.io and I was wondering, is there a raspberry pi project that translates the Pi's GPIO pins into an IoT protocol that hass.io can use?

Three outlet smart plug with open api advice/suggestion needed

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 10:06 PM PDT

We have unattended PCs and want to have a smart plug outlet which we can control from our custom application locally without internet.

We don't want to control from an app we need to control from our custom software which is running on unattended PCs with or without internet.

We used and deployed hundreds the Ubiquiti mpower which worked well by customizing the busy box watchdog. The issue is that product is eol and there are no more available.

Does anyone know of a smartplug which we can customize or use with an open api that isn't really expensive? We were paying like $50 for the smartplug. We don't want to make our own custom PCB we want to assemble existing components.

    Appreciate your help in advance!

Best robot vacuum easily purchased in canada?

Ideally it would mop as well, but if the mopping function isn't great then I'd be willing to pass it up.

Less than 12 mm wide RGB + CCT capable LED stripe

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 03:20 PM PDT

Hi, I have a LED rail installed in my kitchen, in which the LED stripe is getting old, so I'm looking to upgrade it. I wanted to have RGB + CCT, but my rail is 11.1 mm wide in the inside, if I measured it correctly and I can't find one that is less than 12 mm. Is there a LED stripe that ticks all the boxes?

Are there any wifi bulbs that work on a dimmable switch without flickering? Note- I do not want/need them to dim.

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 06:42 PM PDT

We put smart bulbs in the dining room light that is on one of those old dimmer knobs that is both a push button and a rotatable dimmer. We never use the dimmer, its just an odd push button at this point. As soon as we pushed the on button it had a very disconcerting flicker going on even though no one was turning it.

Are there any wifi bulbs we can hook up to Google home that won't flicker like that? They definitely don't need to be dimmable at all, they just need to not flicker or burn the house down lol

Can I use a single-pole dimmable light switch (Kasa Smart Dimmer by TP-Link) if a light is controlled by two switches, but I leave the one on all the time?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 05:49 PM PDT

I've moved into a likely, long term apartment and plan on outfitting it with smart home tech pretty much head to toe.

One of my first tasks is light automation.

I will be buying 9 switches to put throughout the apartment (there's way too many damn switches, could have combined a few in my opinion...). I researched for a while came to Kasa Smart Dimmer as my choice based on ease of use, installation, low cost, and that the appearance strikes my fancy. (https://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-HS220P3-Switch-3-Pack-TP-Link/dp/B07HGSCXB6/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=Kasa+Smart+Dimmer+Switch+by+TP-Link%2C+Single+Pole%2C+Needs+Neutral+Wire%2C+WiFi+Light+Switch+for+LED+Lights%2C+Works+with+Alexa+and+Google+Assistant%2C+UL+Certified%2C+3-Pack&qid=1597538837&sr=8-5)

The only issue I'm facing is that my kitchen lights are controlled by 2 different switches (one dimmable and one just standard on/off, in case that matters).

My question is that if I just leave the simple on/off in place and always leave it on, but replace the other dimmable with the Kasa one, will it work as intended. I figure I will probably control the lights by voice 99% of the time so just ignoring the other switch will be NBD.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

    Preferred Method of Programming

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 08:52 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

I'm working on a project that allows users of all types of backgrounds to program home automation routines.

I'm currently doing research regarding the different types of programming paradigms that are used in home automation, and the trade off's between complex logic and usability.

I've researched that many of the tech giants use a trigger-action programming approach, but what paradigms do you guys prefer to use for this application, and do you have a background in Software Engineering/Development?

Install Security Camera While Away From Home?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 03:26 PM PDT

I ordered a simple $30 security camera for my (college) bedroom, but shipment got delayed and I had to cancel since it would arrive after I left.

I'm thinking of having my friend plug in the security camera if I order one. Do I have to physically be with the camera to set it up?
Can she just plug it in, then I can connect to it remotely through its app (badabing badaboom!). Is that an option with these devices?

    Thank so much!

beginner looking for the right cleaning robot that's right for me

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 03:19 PM PDT

I have a 1500 sq ft home (3/1) live by myself, no pets or kids (that might change one day) and hate cleaning, never used a robot before so complete beginner. all rooms are hardwood with mats and rugs around the home. not sure if higher priced robots mean better cleaning but ideally would like to spend less than $200 if possible but don't mind spending more if i'm going to get better cleaning, more features, etc...

    must have features are:

best quality cleaning (both mopping and vacuum)

app (so i can turn on robot if not home) set zones, etc...are nice but not required

scheduling (so i can schedule it to clean frequently used rooms while asleep)

    return to dock for recharge

reusable pads if possible to save on costs

object detection (i have alot of stuff around the home that the robot will bump into)

automatic resume where left off after recharge

    not important features:

tank size (i have no problems refilling the water tank as many times as it needs)

voice control (i don't care for alexa voice enabled)

    noise (i don't mind noise)

battery life (i don't care how long the battery lasts since it's going to self recharge)

Looking for Solutions/Modifications...Door Sensor on Fridge

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 03:12 PM PDT

    door/window sensors don't detect open/closed - obvious loophole?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 11:03 AM PDT

New to home security/automation here. Seems like there's a big loophole with these door/window sensors in that they don't detect if the thing is actually locked. Doesn't that mean they potentially send false positives that the thing is closed, but not necessarily locked? Do folks not care or are people putting two sensors on every window and door? Seems like that would be overkill and expensive.

Question about bulb size when replacing recessed lights with smart bulbs

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 12:15 PM PDT

I'm going to be replacing 9 bulbs in my living room/kitchen area with smart bulbs. These are the current lights: https://i.gyazo.com/77806fad92793147d3ee11f856590df0.jpg

Photo of the recessed light: https://i.gyazo.com/fb514af358fd4a181aeb8be97237f15a.png

Many of the smart lights I'm seeing look like traditional bulbs with the curved bottom, while the Hue looks flatter on the bottom. I'm wondering if one is better than the other for recessed lights, or, if I'll run into issues with one bulb looking bad, or worse, just not fitting properly.

    Any experience here?

    Lutron Maestro Motion Sensor Range

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 07:48 AM PDT

Is there any way to decrease the range of the sensor? I have tried setting the sensitivity to low, and it does not seem to affect the range.

I have a Lutron Maestro Motion Sensor installed in the laundry room. The room is 7 feet deep, and then there is a short hallway, also 7 feet long before entering the kitchen (roughly 14 feet total range).

The problem is, every time someone walks past the short hallway into the kitchen (which is often because it is the main path to/from the second floor), it triggers the light.

Any ideas on how to keep it from triggering? I've thought of maybe spraying the sensor with some frosted paint, but I don't want to damage it. Anyone tried anything that worked?

Please Explain Like I’m 5: Smartthings hub user here (considering hubitat) I want more control and feel confident enough to take on a new project... should I go with Homeassistant or Webcore, and why?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 11:24 AM PDT

I've always been a tinkerer, have rooted and jailbroken my phones a plenty, setup a pihole via headless install earlier this year... so I think I can figure out these platforms. I'm just not sure what the differences are and why I may want one over another.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Edit: just wanted to be clear that I'm using smartthings now, am considering hubitat as ST replacement in addition to trying webcore or home assistant on smartthings first

    Fan/Light

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 04:06 AM PDT

I know this has been asked before. I wanted to put my spin on it to see if there are any updates.

I have a fan/light that connects to a single switch on the wall. I have to pull a chain to turn on the fan. the fan is 3 or 4 speed. I have to pull a different chain to turn on the light.
I have considered using smart bulbs but they are crazy expensive at $40-$100 a pop and I have 2 fan/lights with 3 bulbs each. I could buy a brand new smart fan for that much.

I want to be able to control both my fan and my light from my iPhone using Siri. I don't have nor want any Alexas or OK Google bots. I just want to control my fan from bed so I don't have to get up to turn off the light. right now I have a reading light. I have to turn that on and go back to the fan/light to turn that off. I'd rather be able to skip those extra steps if possible.

What is the most inexpensive way to do this? Also, I am not allowed to, nor would I want to replace the fan because I'm a renter.

What do I need to make this a reality? What tools? What equipment? Do I need a wireless network? Do I have to have that network connected to the internet. Do I have to buy some kind of smart home hub? Treat this like your writing a recipe. Tools/ingredients and then instructions on how to make it happen. step by step. Also please don't assume I have any tools. Stuff as basic as screwdrivers. Please leave nothing out. be as painfully specific and basic as humanly possible. Thanks for your time.

Sonoff Mini, 2 switches, 1 set of lights

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 09:53 AM PDT

I am trying to wire my home up with several Sonoff Minis. I have ran into an 2-way switch that I can not figure out how to wire, My setup is the same as option #1 this. I have 2 switches on either side of the kitchen. These switches control a set of recessed overhead lights. How can I wire the Mini into this configuration, preferably with only 1 Mini if possible. Thanks in advance for any help.

Sundown light timers with a user replaceable battery or auto setting clock.

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 07:37 AM PDT

I have several Leviton VPT24-1PZ light switch timers for exterior lights that work great for a couple of years. You program in the data/time and your longitude and your lights come on at sundown. However, these timers rely on a built-in non-replaceable battery to keep time in the event of a power outage. After a couple of years this battery is useless and every time the power goes out you have to reset the clock on the timers.

Does anyone have a recommendation on similar timers that might have a user replaceable battery, or that can set the date and time automatically? I'd rather not use a networked smart device, especially one that needs a 3rd party cloud service to function. The important feature for me is being able to turn on at sundown and not at a set time every day.
