One of my Sengled Smart Hub devices (model Z02-Hub) has uploaded 3.17GB of encrypted data over the past week when its only job is to turn two lightbulbs on and off. What could it possibly be uploading? 3 pics attached, more details in comments.

New Home Build (in process) - Have Questions About Media Sharing

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 08:04 AM PDT

First, I hope this is the right place to post this... If not feel free to scold me (and point me in the right direction) :)

    Background:
I'm having a new home built as we speak. I've opted for numerous "smart home" features like 2 smart Ecobee thermostats, Z-Wave door locks, smart plugs and switches, security cameras, and CAT6 data drops in almost every room. Gigabit internet will be available. We are a family of 4 and we can often be found streaming different things at the same time and also doing quite a bit of gaming. We each have our own PCs and mobile devices.

    What I hope to do:
I would like to be able to have a NAS to store all my media (photos, music, movies/tv) that I currently own and have all of that available to be viewed/heard on the three TVs we will have as well as mobile devices.

We will also have streaming content as well like Netflix, Prime, Hulu, etc. which we currently get through a Roku and an AppleTV each driving a different TV in our current home. I want to be able to access these streaming services from any device in the house. I am planning to buy 3 new TVs when we move in so that we have the latest tech (and because our current ones are too small for the new house).

    My Questions:

    1. Should I buy a NAS to store all of the media I want to share and would/could that NAS be connected directly to the router located in the media enclosure in the master walk-in closet?
    2. If I go with a NAS, would I then just need to have something like Plex installed on each TV/device so that I could access that media?
    3. Similarly, would I just need to install the streaming service apps on each device so that can stream independently of one another?
    4. Would I still need to use the Roku or AppleTV and, if so, would I need to have one for each TV or could they be attached to the router at the media enclosure and shared across any device on the network? I'm thinking they would not be needed but want to confirm. Maybe just the AppleTV since I'm guessing that's not an app that is found on TV app stores.
    5. Is there anything else you can think of I am missing or where I can take advantage of this or other tech to do something cool in the house?

Thanks so much for reading. I'm fairly tech-savvy but haven't really been keeping up with the latest tech for quite some time. Now I am ready to get caught up and jump right in now that I will have a great home to do it in.

Fun with USB over IP and the Insteon 2413U PLM

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 03:05 PM PDT

    Hi guys!

I run OpenHAB with various bindings for my home automation system. One of those is Insteon, through a 2413U USB PLM. It works great most of the time, but I usually use HouseLinc to manage the Insteon network, so to do that I used to have to physically move cables around to move the PLM from my OpenHAB system to my laptop running HouseLinc, which was a pain.

I've put together a USB-over-IP solution that eliminates the physical parts of that process, and documented it all here: https://www.davecorder.org/blog/openhab/fun-with-usb-over-ip-and-the-insteon-2413u-plm/

Please let me know if you have any comments or feedback!

    Millivolt thermostat?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 10:11 PM PDT

So a little background - I'm in an apartment, and many apartments here in the Seattle area utilize baseboard or wall-mount forced-air heaters. In our apartment, we also have a gas "fireplace" in the common room - it's one of these models that is enclosed, starts a flame inside, kicks the heat out with a blower, and is controlled by a thermostat.

I've spoken to our management, and they're willing to install smart thermostats for us to tie into Alexa. This is partially because I hate the cheap-ass King t-stats (they never get it right, and setting to 70 means I'm going to roast in bed or freeze), but partially because I want smart t-stats. They probably want them too, so there ya go - and I'm willing to test and improve the unit because I'm a nice guy. =)

(Note, I've got the baseboard t-stats sorted out; the Mysa t-stats will probably work. If not, we just revert back to the crappy ones.)

For the common room, I've been told by the maintenance head that the fireplace requires a millivolt line. I see a lot of stuff that uses a C-wire, but not being an HVAC tech I don't know what this means - and therefore, I don't know what kind of t-stat I should buy.

    So long and short:

    1) What do the above terms mean, in terms of what to look for in a t-stat?

    2) What brand do you recommend, since I'm here?

Looking for recommendations of what software/app you prefer for a kiosk tablet setup.

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 10:08 PM PDT

I use smartthings, Alexa, Wyze/Blink cams, and I will be adding more ESP's for LED's, smart lighting, switches, sensors, etc.

If you also have a recommendation on integrating ESP32's, NodeMCU's, and Wemos D1 mini's into my setup, I'd appreciate it. I've used ST Anything to set up a couple NodeMCU's with motion sensors with Smartthings, but I'm not sure how it's all gonna work out with them dropping the classic app soon.

I will probably move to home assistant eventually, but I just want to get some things working with what I currently have. Thank you!

All I want is for my wife to be able to reassure herself that the door is locked from bed. I don't understand the hubs.

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 01:50 PM PDT

I'm looking at Schlage Connect smart locks. Or Encode which seems to just be wi-fi and an app but is more expensive. That's making me lean towards getting a hub. I don't really see myself diving deep into home automation so I'm wondering what people would recommend.

A quick google seemed to recommend Home Assistant (for non-novices), the Samsung 'hub', or SmartThings? When I search them though I get a ton of results here so I'm really trying to narrow down what I need to know to make a decision of which lock I should buy.

    house power meter

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 08:56 PM PDT

I am building my power monitor board (current, voltage, ect)

I currently have openhab as my HA tool of choice. I also already have a mysensors network infrastructure in place. Is there any real reason to use openenergymonitor instead of just having the info connect into my openhab system? Openhab already uses influxdb as my persistence value storage and i have grafana graphing all sorts of stuff.

Does it make sense to setup openenergymonitor? Most likely i would end up just pushing openenergymonitor to openhab for some stuff anyways.

Plus I would potentially need to use more hardware (pi, 433mhz wireless, ect) over the 2.4ghz mysensors network i already have.

But maybe i am missing something. Figured I would ask the community and see what you guys think.

Smart lock without a need for batteries

How many doors have built in wires to power smart locks? It would be great to have smart locks without needing to change batteries every so often.

Smart switch on wall turning on/off smart lights?

I have a smart fan (hunter) that works great via native app and google HA, but what's the best way to be able to use a physical switch to shut it off without killing the power to the fan, which renders the app useless?

Looking for Security camera system for non-techy person

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 05:00 PM PDT

I'm trying to pick a security camera for my aunt's family. They are extremely untechnical so I want something that's as simple as possible.

Features they need: + security is a must + ability to enable alarm system and/or alert police + Mobile app + Motion sensor for when people passing by + Night vision + Easy to install

Things that are nice to have: - wireless - wide field of view - storage that isn't monthly payment - 4k video

Their budget is under $1000, they are planning on getting 3 exterior cameras and 1 interior camera.

    Thanks for the help!

Where to start with smart things

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 02:44 AM PDT

    Hey folks,

sorry if this post doesn't fit here, I'm new too this sub.

I am very interested in starting with smarthome or homeautomation stuff.

First I just want too use my smartphone too turn on/off the lights and electricity and stuff. Maybe in a new flat/house in 1-2 years I'm going "all-in", but for the moment I'm good with a few lights, a few sockets and some stuff.

I'm very interested in the xiaomi stuff, I could get the xiaomi gateway v2 for very low money.

Is there any system which is relatively "open" too other stuff? e.g. I just buy wifi sockets at amazon and can connect it too my smartphone/a gateway of choice?

Longs story short: I'm searching for a low budget starter kit :D

What I have atm: Xiaomi Fan 2s (which is mainly the reason I want some lights and sockets in addition, maybe the thermometer and night light also), philips ambilight smart tv (maybe in (near) future connect the lights for more ambilight or connect it too the tv that it automatically dims the lights when I start a movie and if I pause it the lights go brighter!? i dont know exactly yet). Also I got an Echo Dot and Android Smartphone, no apple-future in sight.

Well, thats all from my side, hope you guys understand what I'm trying too say and sorry again, if this is the wrong sub for a question like this.

Also sorry for my english, non native speaker here (located in germany if this is somehow interesting in choosing a brand for smarthome stuff)

    Have a nice day!

    Multiple TV control

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 02:57 PM PDT

I want a smart AC but don't know where to start.

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 10:48 AM PDT

I've recently moved out into a new condo and I'm discovering the wild world of smart home technology and home automation. My air conditioning unit is a ductless mini split style and it's controlled using a remote control. I would love to have it automatically turn on and off when I leave and arrive at my place.

Does anyone here know how to go about automating an existing AC unit? All I suppose I need is just a point in the right direction.

    Thanks!

Dead zones for Honeywell 5816 door sensors?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 02:04 PM PDT

    Hello,

I have a set of Honeywell 5816 door sensors that I've got set up around the house. I pick up the signal from them using an SDR which I then publish on my MQTT server. All is well except for 1 sensor location. I've tried different sensors, batteries, etc. and the problem isn't the hardware, it's the location in my home. Is anyone aware of anything that may obscure the signal from the sensor?

I can trigger the reed switch with the magnet at the desired location and get nothing; move to the other side of the house (and farther from my SDR antenna) and it works fine. I'm wondering if something is affecting the signal; I thought it may have been the car keys (keyless entry and ignition) but have ruled them out.

    Any ideas? Thanks!

    Recessed Zigbee Options?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 08:53 AM PDT

Hi all, wondering if anyone has potential options for me. I have recessed can lighting throughout my house, 4" wide cans with PAR20 bulbs in them.

    - I got excited when I saw the Sylvania Smart+ Zigbee color retrofits, but they only come in 5/6" sizing.
    - Hue makes 4" retrofit, but they are double the price of the Sylvania ones ($70/bulb in Canada!)
    - Any PAR20 zigbee options? Am I married to this bulb type with my current cans?

I have a Conbee II as a zigbee hub. Currently have some other Hue lights around.

    Thanks

    I need a smarter thermostat

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 10:18 AM PDT

Not sure if this is the right sub but I'm sick of nest. It is not a smart thermostat at all. Ac comes on, I raise the temp setting so it turns off. 5 minutes later it's trying to lower the commanded temp again.

Is there a truly smart thermostat that profiles a home and takes outdoor temp and humidity into account?
