    Countertop lighting alternative

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 11:54 PM PDT

    Hey Reddit,

Looking for some advice. Moved into a home with old IKEA counter top lighting; recently, one of them broke, and IKEA no longer sells them.

I'd like to just replace the light, but I'm having difficulty finding something that fits into the power cord. I wish I could take the power cord out (replace with the new IKEA system) but it looks like their renovations were customized, and I can't get the cord out unless I put a hole in the wall (see photo).

    Here are the pictures:

Smart Light Switch - Retain Manual Switch Operation

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 05:03 PM PDT

Hi, I'm new to home automation, and dont really know the market or whats availabe. Currently, I have an array of either Zigbee bulbs and/or cheapo WiFi bulbs, all connected to an Amazon Echo Plus.

These all work fine, if you have the light switch in the ON position. But so many times I'll go into a room, or walk through a hallway, and want that light on, and have to stop and crane my head round to projject my voice to the nearest Alexa enabled device. All this, while the actual switch is a few inches in front of me.

It seems the opposite of smart to delay turning on a light from a 2 second press in front of me, into a 5-10second alexa command/response.

So my question, is there something out there that will be smart, prefereably zigbee, and will transform my existing physical light swtiches into smart switches? And further more, could they retain the funtion of the light switch itself in both orientations? As in, the switch would effectively work in both directions, if alexa has the smart switch off, i can phsycially flip it to be on, and if alexa has the smart switch on, i can physically flip it to be off, and vice versa in both orientations,

I guess the switch becomes a "soft" switch at that point.

    Does something like that exist?

    Show temperature on a display

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 01:04 PM PDT

I have a Philips Hue sensor and a Sonoff Tasmota TH16 which both read temperature and humidity, I run HomeBridge and I can see temperature and humidity on my iPhone but is there a way to show this values on a display? I can make something DIY whit a raspberry (for example) but if there was a product already made it would be better.

    Thanks

Looking for an app-friendly robot vacuum for hard wood floors in a small city apartment under $200. Can wait till Black Friday.

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 08:52 AM PDT

Any ideas? The Eufy 15C max should be about $175 on Black Friday off Amazon. Is that the best? It would be great to have something with good build quality that could pick up dirty and tiny leaves / rocks that fall off indoor plants. There are some narrow hallways in the apartment too.

    Thanks :)

3 way switch for living room light with second switch for the fan.

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 06:32 PM PDT

So, I'm trying to put zwave switches in my living room. I have two switches for the light. One on either end of the house. There is also a switch for the fan, at one of the two switches. The wiring is a bit much, with the two switches for the fan and the lights. Is there a way to do this easy, or are there add one I need to get?

    Hardwire iport Launch Wallstation

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 05:22 PM PDT

I just got an iport Launch Wallstation. I really want to hardwire and not use the plug threy provide to plug into basically an outlet. This looks really terrible.

On the site it says that it can also be powered by PoE saying that "any power source that provides 12-15v sA DC." - So.. This is where I get lost. 1. I cant really figure out how to tell how many pass through votes would come out of my Ubiquti switch. OR 2. If there is a much easier way to convert a 110 AC behind the wall to hired wire this wallstation. Thank you !

I dont really know what a PoE injector does, but im some basic research it looks like that might work?

Genie 3024 connected to Chaimberlain myQ Smart Garage Hub

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 04:45 PM PDT

I just wanted to report success with this pairing. I have seen several posts in here saying it isn't possible but it did eventually work. Took many times of being told it was unsuccessful and it would only work in monitor mode but a little patience(read: stubbornness) paid off. I wasn't dpi be anything wrong it just took many tries for the units to sync up. I didn't do anything special the time it work, I mean I moved the hub almost on top of the opener earlier but success came long after that so I don't think that made a difference overall.

Lightstrip, Controller and PSU for long runs?

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 01:56 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I have a gypsum soffit ceiling with a bunch of GU10 Hue Ambience lights throughout my place.

In each room I have a 'shadow gap' where I intend to do a lightstrip. Something like this.

While the rooms themselves are not big (around 5m of strip is required for each room), the corridor and living are more complicated. The corridor is 15m long and the living one is a square like shadow gap which is approximately 12m in total.

I need a controller, lightstrip and power supply for each of the long runs. If we take the 15m one as an example, what I came up with was:

    • RGBCCT LED strip
      • white and warm white colour temperature and CRI is more important than the RGB, cause most times I would want to set this to warm white (2700-3000k), with the occasional colour.
      • Which ones should I be looking at? 5-in-1 led strips? one strip with separate RGB, separate white and separate warm white? or separate strips completely (one RGB and one CCT)? The last option would mean I need 3x5m RGB and 3x5m CCT.
      • 60 LED/m? 90 LED/m?
      • Close White Ambience colours to Hue (not too bothered about RGB as I don't have any RGB bulbs)
    • Controller
      • This needs to connect to the Hue bridge to use scenes, different colours, etc
      • I like the dresden elektronik FLS-PP ip but this seems to be only RBGW not RGBCCT
      • The other option would be a Gledopto RGBCCT controller (1ID), but I heard they have problems with scenes / switching on off different channels?
    • Power
      • In terms of power not sure what to go for. I have a switch on the wall with the live wire going out the ceiling rose (towards the beginning of the corridor), so I would connect the PSU directly to that and the controller to the PSU.
      • But how do I power 15 meters without voltage drop? Do I connect them in parallel? If yes can the controllers take 3 wires in the V+ and each of the RGBCW?
      • Or do I use an LED Amplifier for the 2nd and 3rd lightstrip? If so, can the controllers suggested above handle 2 LED amplifiers and the amperage without frying them?
      • What size power supply would I need if for example each 15m run is rated at 21W/m?

TLDR; I am a bit confused on how to power long run without voltage drop with just one PSU and one live wire coming out of the ceiling rose.

    Any help is appreciated.

MyQ automatic garage opener - why did it open randomly?

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 08:16 PM PDT

I bought this two weeks ago. Two or three days into it. The garage opener started opening randomly in the middle of the day. I thought it was weird and brushed it off. It happened again the next day at which point I felt a threat against my home as I have some stuff in the garage. I unplugged the whole unit and left it. The following days it opens on random days. It's been about two weeks now and the MyQ unit is no where near my garage. I took it up to my room and it's not even plugged it. It's weird because today it opened by itself at 3:08pm and yesterday at similar time at 3:09pm

What the hell is going on? Why is this being sold as I see many people with this issue when I google it?

I don't think it's my network because I have a camera in my garage that's connected via the same WiFi and it didn't shut off. I can clearly see it opening at those times.

Why is my garage door opening even if the unit is unplugged?

I want to get rid of this as it's not safe to install on your own if you have no knowledge of networking and whatever according to everyone's "theory"

I want to return it but it continues to open on its own...

Do I need to reset my garagecontroller unit?

How annoying..... anyone have a easy step by step instruction on how to get rid of this issue?

My garage door opener unit is "Genie Professional Line Model 1028"

Steamist 550 enable more than 1 water outlet at a time

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 02:44 PM PDT

    Steamist turn off CalGreen

After struggling for days, I finally found instructions to disable the "CalGreen" "feature" that limits water output to be from just one water outlet at a time. Navigate to the outlet setup screen and touch the middle of the text "Set shower outlets" and hold for 10sec. Once a screen pops up, press No. That is all.

    You're welcome.

Hunter Douglas Powerview Hub Gen 1 Automation (Now that IFTTT is going paid) Alternative?

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 11:40 AM PDT

    Hi Homeautomation,

I have a Hunter Douglas Powerview Hub Gen 1 and I set it up with IFTTT and Google Home/Assistant when I first got it (3+ years ago). Now that IFTTT is going paid, am I stuck with paying IFTTT for getting gogole home / assistant to open/close the blinds? I used it very simply (WAF), "Hey google, open/close the blinds" And it would use IFTTT applet to trigger the powerview app to open or close scenes.

It looks like the Powerview Hub Gen 2 is capable of connecting to google home/assistant directly without IFTTT or any other 3rd party. But I'm not sure if this is compatible with my blinds, nor do I want to buy another device.

I tried looking for other IFTTT replacements that might have the same implementation but I couldn't find one.

Are there other ways to get voice activated controls from a google home or google assistant to open/close my blinds? I'm seeing a little bit about HomeAssistant or Homekit do these work?

Any feedback or suggestions would be great.

    Thanks

LED light strip with RF remote

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 04:17 PM PDT

I'm looking for LED light strips that use a remote control that doesn't require line of sight. The difficult part is I need two sets and I have to be able to control them individually even though they are close together. Most RF sets I've seen will control both sets when you press the button on one remote.

I want to put them under my kids loft beds and have them be able to control them from anywhere in their room. They are very adamant they don't want to control via Google it anything like that.

    Any ideas?

Low profile under cabinet tablet mount?

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 12:16 PM PDT

I have a spare Android tablet that I'd like to put in my kitchen specifically for running the home assistant app and browsing recipes online, however I can't find a good under cabinet mount commercially available. I'm looking for something that holds the tablet, attaches underneath my kitchen cabinet, and folds up flush to the bottom of the cabinet when not in use. Ideally the hinge would hold in any position so I can adjust the angle when folded down.

Everything I'm finding doesn't fold flat and has a couple arms to move the screen around, I just need a bracket with a hinge and mechanism to hold the tablet. In theory it's pretty simple, but I can't find one commercially available.

    Does this tablet mount exist?

Am I overthinking this? (automation newbie wanting to make smart decisions)

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 11:42 AM PDT

I've just purchased my first home and want to gradually set up some automation in areas like locks, security system/cameras, lights, shades, and maybe some more things. It's just two of us at home and we don't have the same needs as bigger houses/families.

Since we're happy with our Pixel phones and a few other Google devices, I had planned to get a Nest security system and go from there so that things were easily integrated. Now that the Nest Secure is discontinued, I started looking into other security systems and platforms, leading me down rabbit holes and into analysis paralysis.

I'm used to doing a bunch of research on a product before buying it, but home automation isn't a product, it's a network of them. Mostly I'm worried about picking the wrong pieces and not having them work together (well).

Some specific questions that might help me:

    1. If I start out with SmartThings , for example, would that likely work for my needs? What are the downsides or things I'd have to look out for? I ask because I know Home Assistant is popular here, but it is a little too DIY/beyond my capacity right now.
    2. Do apps for SmartThings/Hubitat "take over" automation from something like Google Home? I am OK with having to download lots of apps to get different pieces installed initially (e.g. Ring doorbell, Nest thermostat, Abode security, Lutron lights) but ideally I would have a "mission control" for working out how they work together.
    3. The smart items in my home now (Chromecast, Home mini speaker, NestxYale lock) all operate over wifi. If I continue to use only wifi devices, does that affect the health/speed of my wifi? Should I start focusing on smart products that use zigbee/z-wave instead?

Magic home led strip seems not to reset

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 09:20 AM PDT

magic home led strip remote wont reset

Hello! I just tried to reset my magic home led controller because it didn't connect to my wifi anymore (worked perfectly for weeks). After I did the reset sequence, my led strip just started flashing red, green, blue continuously and haven't stopped since. The wifi is also not in my wifi settings so I can't connect it to my phone again.

I have now stopped the flashing with the IR controller, but after trying everything again it still just flashes and doesn't actually reset. Is it just faulty or can I do something about this?

    Thanks!

Control bathroom lights without smart bulbs

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 11:22 AM PDT

I have Philips Hue lights setup in my flat. The bathroom currently has 8 GU10 standard (not smart) bulbs.

I don't really want to replace them because the light switch also turns on the extractor fan - and I don't want that running all the time.

Is there a way for me to control the 'switch' without too much hassle?

    "Smart" Frigidaire Dehumidifier/Notifications

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 10:37 AM PDT

I just bought this a week or so ago. I would have assumed that the best part about having a "smart" dehumidifier connected to my network is that it would alert me when the bucket is full, so I know to change it ASAP. Very surprised and disappointed that this is not in fact the case. I hope I'm wrong and there is just something I'm missing so please someone out there that has a Frigidaire smart product tell me otherwise.
