Posted: 28 Dec 2020 07:19 AM PST "Hey Google, open the gate" would be ideal. It would need to dial a phone number, wait ~30-45 seconds, then dial 9. Is this even possible? [link] [comments]
inovelli red and black in the same box? Posted: 28 Dec 2020 05:01 PM PST i think i've settled on inovelli switches as i start to build out my zwave network, but that leads me to this question: in spots where i only have one switch to upgrade, i'm going to go with the red (if for nothing else than to have the LED notification bar). however, since the only functional difference between red and black is that LED / scene control / energy monitoring, is it safe to say there's really no reason to put multiple reds in the same switch box when i can save some money and just put in one red and one (or more) blacks as the second / third / n-th switch? TLDR - is there any reason to use red all around and not save some money by using blacks in boxes that already have a red in place? [link] [comments]
Get rid of on/off delay from physical button? Zooz Posted: 28 Dec 2020 05:04 PM PST Ahoy! I have a whole bunch of brand new Zen26 switches that I just installed, I bought them because I read that the 'scene' switching delay could be turned off. Well, I turned off scene mode, and there is no change! It doesn't report "up 2x" anymore, but it still waits for multiple presses, and if tapped up twice, it doesn't turn on. So, there's still a 500-700ms delay between pushing the button and the light turning on. This drives my partner (and me) nuts, and is the whole reason I bought these switches... Does anyone know if there's another way to fix this to eliminate the delay? Any Zooz devs on here? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Dec 2020 11:38 PM PST Disclaimer: this will be odd. Currently having an odd pipe issue where there will be this weird hum throughout the house's water pipes that can only be temporarily resolved if the basement toilet is flushed (having this checked out in the near future). Is there a way to automate flushing a toilet through WiFi (ideally using a smart assistant but any nice idea that works wirelessly would be great). I've come across a few touch less flush kits but couldn't think of a way to get those to work over the network. Another approach I thought of would be some sort of setup to push the flush lever, but I am unfamiliar with the servos/robotics involved. [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Dec 2020 09:00 PM PST Hey guys, sorry if this is already in the wiki but I read through the whole thing and couldn't seem to find the answer to my question. So, I am currently transforming my parents house to a smart switch, I have succesfully converted all of the single pole switches and now i have 3 sets of 3 different 3 way switches that I need to change. I have been reading on the reviews for some products and I keep seeing that I can use one smart switch in a 3 way switch system. Like 1 dumb switch and 1 smart. However, I also keep seeing that I need to identify which side of the room of the switch has the live wire in it. I have not seen the wiring for 3 way switches yet but do I have to change the right side of the room? Or can I just choose one or the other? Thank you! [link] [comments]
Finally looking at moving off smartthings... but to what? Posted: 28 Dec 2020 06:36 AM PST So I've had smartthings for several years (on a v2 hub when they were new). I've been reading a little bit about the API changes they are making and I've lost faith in Samsung to keep it working the way I'd like. (I.E. there seems to be way too much reliance on things in the cloud), and the fact that custom apps / device handlers are going to have to get migrated etc really has put me off. My current home setup has a Philips Hue (With its own hub), Harmony Elite Remote (and hub), and Smartthings with a bunch of Zigbee devices. I've written some custom ST code to dump temperatures into an influxDB via MQTT and would like to keep that capability (if not expand on it in the future). We don't use voice assistants. The Harmony Remote is tied into the Hue Hub as well, but not really Smartthings. (Although it might be nice to be able to do more with it in the future, but not a requirement... I'm also kind of frustrated with Logitech as well, but it works for now.) I've been looking at Hubitat, and at HASS, and was wondering if there were any others I should be looking at? Hubitat looks nice as it seems like it is almost a drop in replacement for ST, with groovy and everything, BUT it is controlled by a company and could suffer the same fate as ST by being bought out or running out of funding or what have you... HASS I like because it seems pretty open to adaptation, but I've heard there are issues with Zigbee, which is what I use device wise (I.E. no ZWave here, just ZB and WiFi/Network devices). I don't mind hosting my own system for HASS (I have other servers/electronics projects of my own floating around...), I just want reliability without too much futzing around. I'd appreciate any feedback on hub options (Either these two or other options). Thanks! [link] [comments]

New Smart Thermostat not powering on, old one worked before and now doesn’t work either. Posted: 28 Dec 2020 09:32 PM PST I had an ecobee 3 running no problem for the last couple years. Getting ready to move and wanted to take it with me so I bought a Wyze thermostat to replace it with. I switched the wires to the Wyze and it wouldn't power on. Switched back to the ecobee and that won't power on either now. I measured Rh to C and it's only 12V. What could have possibly happened that it worked for years and changing thermostats broke both? Smart Motorized Blinds Options Posted: 28 Dec 2020 02:40 PM PST I'm interested in installing smart blinds and want to get your guys thoughts on the current market. My criteria is the following:
I've looked at the Lutron Serena, Sivoia, and Somfy RYS shades, but definitely looking to explore more options that fit the bill better. [link] [comments]
Looking for an auto-shutoff solution for a turntable. Posted: 28 Dec 2020 03:17 PM PST I've dipped my toes into the audiophile world and decided to buy a non-return turntable (one that keeps turning after the music has stopped) since they're considered overall higher quality. Basically, the less moving parts and extra junk an audiophile setup has, the better everything sounds. The problem is I have some moderate ADD, and it's only a matter of time until I forget the record stopped and leave it on all night, destroying the needle. So I'm trying to whip up a solution to have the power to the turntable cut off when music has stopped playing after a certain duration. A smart power switch won't interfere with sound quality at all, and a sensor that either detects sound being played, or changes in voltage, to control the switch should do the trick. Got a switch, not sure where to start with sensors. Suggestions? [link] [comments]
C by GE smart switch for garage Posted: 28 Dec 2020 03:17 PM PST I'm looking to possibly add a smart switch in our non-heated garage (we live where it can get probably 0 degrees maybe a little colder). I can't find anything online other than it needs protecting from the elements. Not sure if they're considering "cold" to be an element or if they're just talking about rain/snow. Any insight would be helpful! [link] [comments]
French doors with automated between-the-glass blinds? Posted: 28 Dec 2020 03:14 PM PST So our out-swing french doors (2-sets) need replaced. They are almost 20 years old and are showing weather damage and are super drafty. I've automated a lot of things around the house and would love for the replacement to have between-the-glass blinds that I can control via phone app or Google assistant. The closest thing I've found in searching is some from Pella(Lifestyle series), but they are only available as in-swing. Wondering if anyone knows of any other options? Any recommendations? I’m trying to setup the ultimate tabletop gaming space in my basement, how can I pull this off? Posted: 28 Dec 2020 12:43 PM PST Hey everyone, I'm somewhat new to the smart home tech and I've been doing a lot of research but I've not been able to come to a conclusion on what kind of devices I should have for my dream game room. I recently moved into a 3 story townhome (I own) and I'm trying to setup my basement as the ultimate immersive tabletop experience, for like Dungeons and Dragons or other games. What I would like to do is be able to control lights and music quickly and easily while running the game to set scenes/moods/cues etc. Also I want to have a lot of just the standard smart home stuff for the rest of the house. To give you an idea of the layout: The top floor has the two bedrooms, and where the router is currently located, with Ethernet running to both rooms for our desktops. The middle floor is the living room and kitchen where we do our TV streaming, play music etc. The bottom floor is supposed to be the sort of man cave/game space, I'm currently putting a sort of bar in at the moment, and want to start setting up the lighting/audio stuff when that's done. We have had DMs for multiple games running at my table in the basement, and I want to make it an awesome experience for them and the players. It would be nice if some of these device controls would be easy enough for someone who didn't set it all up to use. Current smart devices I own: 2 echo 4th gens. Echo dot 4th gen. Echo show 8. 4 Sengled zigbee colored bulbs 2 white Philips hue bulbs 2 Amazon smart plugs 1 Sylvania light strip Ring security system and camera Amazon fire stick plugged into a TV that sits behind the DM's chair (for screen mirroring a laptop, or just putting on a background). Originally I was hoping to just use the Alexa apps and echos as a zigbee hub and have as few apps as possible, but for the lights I have she can't really do much more than turn them on off and change to a list of colors. No color wheel, or real ability to do fades, pulses, or anything else flashy or complex. For my dream setup I think I would need some form of physical controller or smart buttons, not on a phone app, that could set more complex scenes quickly. As an example, something like firelight, or a stormy night. Lights that could interact with sound in some way would be amazing. Imagine something like with a click of a button make it a stormy weather scene, with rain/thunder sounds and flickering pulses of "lightening". That's the kind of thing I want to do. I know some of this could be way too ambitious, expensive, or maybe not even really feasible. But I would love to hear any recommendations from people. I'm willing to put some effort into this project as long as it isn't an insane time or money investment. What I'll probably need or want: A controller/Hub The best program/protocols that runs smoothly Lights bulbs/strips/panels Buttons/physical controller Speakers (could just use echos maybe) Router/WiFi system (old nighthawk is giving me trouble, lots of local traffic and other issues) So what specifically would you use if you were wanting to put on a show/game in your basement that would wow your friends while keeping it relatively budget/user friendly? Chamberlain Garage Door Opener with Google Fiber Network Box Posted: 28 Dec 2020 12:17 PM PST Hi, I'm trying to set up my Wi-Fi enabled myQ Chamberlain garage door opener so that I can control it with our Nest Mini and Hub. I've done the port forwarding. set it up on the 2.4 gHz, enabled DMZ, tried everything. Chamberlain customer support gave up and said it was a router compatibility issue after we tried a bunch of stuff, but has anyone been able to set it up with this router or with Google Wi-Fi? Google Fiber support was the one's who told me to try the DMZ, but that hasn't done anything either. [link] [comments]
In need a recommendation for a smart outdoor lighting Posted: 28 Dec 2020 03:29 PM PST I'm looking for maybe a smart 12 V transformer for outdoor lighting that would connect to Alexa or Google or smart things or home bridge. I would like to use that to power 2 to three different zones of outdoor low-voltage lights possibly 12 V or 24 V. if it could have the ability to dim the lights as well that would be great but not necessary. Please let me know any suggestions otherwise I could build it but I'd rather not. [link] [comments] |
