How risky is it to run a smart plug in a lower temperature than designated?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 12:19 PM PST

    I have a xiaomi zigbee plug: https://xiaomi-store.cz/en/smart-home/976-xiaomi-mi-smart-plug-eu-zigbee-6934177706493.html

I needed to automate a Christmas light outdoors and used it for it. It says on the plug that it can operate between 0-35C, but it can get up to -15C where I live. It is in a dry location, no risk of direct contact with rain or snow.

Any experience with it? Will the plug break or worse?

    DIY Button Pusher?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 05:48 PM PST

I'm in need of a button pusher that I can operate over WiFi (either on its own or through a WiFi wall switch), but the pre-built stuff like SwitchBot needs a hub and that turns into quite an expensive exercise.

I can't use things like an IR blaster or replace the panel, so a mechanical button pusher is my only option.

Has anyone built something like this before? Any recommendations on where to start?

    Inovelli Red switches and hubs?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 11:40 PM PST

I will be moving into a new apartment pretty soon, with recessed lighting (looks like BR30 bulbs), and I want to completely deck it out with RGB bulbs and smart switches.

I currently have various LIFX bulbs around my apartment, however since they are wifi they tend to drop connection frequently. I'm thinking of making the switch the Hue or some other zwave/zigbee lights.

Here is my goal: 1. Have all the lighting be RGB 2. Have smart switches that prevent hard-off to the lights, and offer some sort of multi-function control, aka activate certain scenes or other things. 3. Be able to control the lights regardless of if my internet is down or not.

I found this article that does a pretty good job of explaining products that do this. The Inovelli Red series switches seem like they would be perfect, but the article raises the issue of delays with certain hubs. https://thesmartcave.com/smart-switch-with-smart-bulb/

This article is about a year old, so I was wondering if these issues still exist? Coming from LIFX bulbs, I know nothing about hubs, so if someone could point me in the right direction that would be great.

    Robot vaccuum for shed

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 08:23 PM PST

I have a shed I currently hand vaccuum. It gets very dusty in there, sweeping just makes the dirt fly around.

Since my vaccuum is dying, and it's purely for the shed, this might be an ideal case to try a robot vaccuum. The floor is purely concrete, no carpet. Not many obstacles, work benches, some motorbikes, and shelving. Just a large flat rectangular shed. However there is 1 side I don't want the vaccum to go, so need a feature to be able to set a 'no go area'.

That's it. Would have loved a self emptying feature, but looking at prices of those that's silly money for a shed. I figure battery life doesn't matter at all as it can run 24/7 between charges (live on a farm so noise is no problem either).

In short I think these are the things I want:
    1. Can reliably get back to charging station.
    2. Works well on concrete in a dusty environment
    3. Decent sized dirt capacity. Although I go to the shed pretty much daily, so can empty frequently.
    4. Can set an area off limits to vaccuum
    5. Relatively cheap, below $500 (AU). Cheaper the better. No point overdoing it for the shed.

I'm in Australia too. Any recommendations here?

    Thanks

Question re: Twinkly Lights...is there a timer option?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 01:53 PM PST

I finally caved and bought some 'smart' xmas lights from Twinkly and I must say they are pretty decent! They didn't really take much time to set up. It did take a few tries to connect to our WiFi but once connected it was fine.

The app seems decent for what it is too.

Big plus, IMHO, are the lights themselves. They're just good looking lights with very smooth transitions.

That said...there seems to be one giant omission from the app...can these not be set up on a timer? I can see that I can remotely turn them off and on, but see no option to have that set automatically. Does that option exist?

Manual switch in parallel to remote control?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 07:45 PM PST

Manual switch in parallel to remote control?

    Hello,

I am using a remote control to activate a 12V linear actuator.

Everything works fine, and now I am trying to add a manual switch so that if I am close to the actuator I do not need the remote.

I bought a simple temporary switch (with 4 cables: two to the power, two to the motor, like a car window switch) and connected per attached diagram, but it does not work, for some reason. The remote still does, but not the switch.

As soon as I detach the Eco-Worthy controller, the manual switch works fine.

Any idea what I need to do?

    Tunable white LEDs

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 07:25 PM PST

I'm looking for tunable white LEDs for recessed cans, that work with a dumb wall switch, allow dimming from wall switch, where I put a Shelly Dimmer module on the switch. Must work with manual wall controls and via relay automation.

But the color temp (2700k/3000k/5000k) is controlled via app. Bonus points if could integrate with HA to color change based on time of day. (Ie. bulbs were always set to 5000k in morning, 3000k in afternoon, and 2700k in evening.

Does this exist? Anyone done something like this?

I looked into the Philips Wiz can but I can't tell if these work with regular wall controls for dimming, or only via app.

Conduit from network interface panel to attic. Why?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 02:56 PM PST

I'm currently building a new home and will meet with the low voltage guys soon. I'm looking over the materials he sent over, and for $350, I can get a conduit (with pullstring) from network interface panel (basement) to the attic.

What is the purpose of this?

I thought I would need the conduit going to places I need it in the future, like to TV area, bedroom walls, etc. What is a conduit going to the attic (which I'm not planning on using) going to provide me for the future?

I know everybody says get a conduit, but trying to understand why to the attic. Thsnks!

LED Ceiling Light Fixture "Pulses" Every 10 minutes when On with KASA smart dimmer

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 01:04 PM PST

Hi all. I've installed four of these Kasa smart dimmer switches in my house and have overall been very satisfied with their functionality. However, on one of the LED ceiling fixtures controlled by the (dumb) dimmer I replaced seems to "pulse" when on every 10-15 minutes (turns off then on, or dims off then on, within the span of about a second).

This seems to occur regardless of the dimmer light strength or what other devices on the circuit are on or off when the issue occurs. I've tried Googling around and I can't seem to find anyone that's had a similar issue with these models. Has anyone had a similar experience with these or other smart/dumb dimmers?

A ceiling light that mimics current time of day and works like a regular one?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 07:15 AM PST

So is there a thing i can put instead of my regular lights and when i switch it on, it will light the room based on the time of day (warmer, reddish colours in the morning/evening and cooler at noon).

I saw some philips lamps that you have to turn on with your phone but i was hoping for something simpler where i just flip the switch and bam.

Automatic light and fan control for bathroom. Lua script for fibaro help

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 05:42 AM PST

    Hey guys!

I am not very experienced in Lua scripting. I know some very basic stuff. So I understand why what I made is wrong.

But on my bathroom I have a dimmer, a fan and a multisensor 6. What I have done so far is that when I enter the room it turns on the fan and light. After 4 minutes it turns it off.

Problem with this is that my basic knowledge I am only able to make it count down when it sees movement. When doing this it is not "resetting" the counter if I move again, so after 4 minutes the light and fan goes off even if it have seen me moved so I have to wave my arms to get it back on. If I turn on the lights manually it will still turn it off since the script is told to turn fan and lights off after 4 minutes.

Question is how is a better way to do it? How would you include the humidity sensor.. Maybe a counter that adds time every time I move? Maybe someone also have a script they use for their Fibaro that does something similar?

    Thanks for any help
