Home Automation My Wyze vacuum was delivered yesterday and I am extremely impressed by this thing. So far I dont see anything I wish it could do that it doesn't (well, besides climbing stairs and vacuuming the couch). Theyre sold out, but I still recommend them to anyone looking for a vacuum!

What product would you look to for a more pro level and polished wall tablet?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 08:25 PM PST

I have a Fire HD 8" on my fridge that looks pretty good. But it looks like I set it up. With a new house who would you turn to to get a polished tablet setup on a wall? Like I don't see Leviton or Lutron selling a wall system that can tie into Smartthings or HA but someone like that. Are there any manufacturers out there that make something look polished?

How do you manage internet performance and 20+ smart devices?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 12:30 PM PST

We have the top tier internet package from our local provider, but it still seems slow for streaming. We have about 25 smart switches, bulbs, and garage door opener, with about 8 Alexa devices. We use the default modem/wireless router that the provider gave us.

What can we do to improve speeds? Is it the smart devices slowing down computing and streaming speeds? What are your solutions? TIA!

Kasa Switch cycles every night for no apparent reason

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 11:14 PM PST

At 12:02 am every night, on of my Kasa light switches turns off and then quickly back on. A plug-in switch linked to the wall switch also turns off and on. Then at 12:05 they both turn off but not back on.

I've checked all of my Alexa routines and the Kasa app settings, and nothing is set to do anything like this. Any ideas about what could be causing this? Any way to track down where the command is coming from?

    Air sensor for mold detection

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 09:48 AM PST

Are there any air quality sensors that detect actual mold spores in the air? Or is that not possible because of how mold tests work?

Airthings sensors check for mold risk (humidity + temperature?) but as far as I can tell, don't actively check air samples for mold spores.

Can I control smart home and use automation without internet?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 07:58 AM PST

So I'm looking to install some smart downlights in my kitchen and lounge. The area is quite small as it's an apartment. This is how I'm looking to set up my smart lights.

I want to have a router that is plugged in on my tv cabinet which also has a ZigBee Bridge Hub connected to it. This router won't have an internet connection, just a local network. I want to connect my smart downlights to the ZigBee bridge hub through the Smart Life android app (or some other app such as Phillips Hues) and would like to set up some automation features.

My question is: Am I able to set up my smart downlights and still be able to use automation features in the Smart Life app (or some other app such as Phillips Hues) whilst connected to the router using a local area connection and without being connected to the internet? Would the ZigBee bridge handle the smart lights locally along with automation without an internet/cloud connection?

Below is the bundle I'm looking at getting.

LINK: Downlight Bundle with NUE Bridge

I ask as I want a local smart home that uses a brudge hub and does not need access to the internet or cloud (except for perhaps when setting up new devices as im not too sure) as my internet drops out in my area (sometimes for days)

Hope someone can help me out, cheers!

Led light strip to simulate water shimmer

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 03:00 PM PST

I'm a complete newbie to anything with smart lights or LED color capable lights but recently started living alone for the first time in basically my adult life... Which comes with anxiety issues. Ambience and mood lighting is big with me - and I'd love to have led lights under my bed that simulate a water shimmer effect, but I have no idea where to look or begin? Would any LED light strip be able to do this? Or should I get a specific brand / type?

    Z-Wave Question

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 08:45 PM PST

So this is probably a very elementary question but I just started playing around with home automation last month. I got a Ring doorbell and that opened the flood gates. So far everything that I have purchased and am using connects directly to my Smart Things app via Wifi. Well, I ordered a device manufactured by Aeontec off Amazon. In the description it said, "Compatible with Smart Things" the device arrived today and it seems like maybe I have to have a Z-wave hub to be able to use it, at least that's how I understand the instructions that came with it. Am I understanding that correctly? I can't use it without a hub? If so is there any advantage to using a hub or should I just return this thing and find something that works via Wifi like the rest of my devices?

    Smart Voltage Regulator?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 02:04 PM PST

Do any of you know if there is a smart voltage regulator that is programmable and has scenes and an app as well as IFTTT integration? I'm looking to program a voltage sequence for a 120v water pump(to regulate pump speed/water flow) so I can automate a project of mine but I don't know where to look. Any suggestions?

Can I use a Verizon Wireless MiFi modem to run an offsite setup temporarily.

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 07:22 PM PST

    Hello.

I just bought a house that I want to monitor the temperature/humidity since we are running a pellet stove and then electric heat if the stove shuts down. I want to know if anyone has ever run a setup with a Verizon (or other similar wireless provider) modem? The idea here is cheap (I have an abundance of data per month not used/ and cheap, it would be maybe $10 a month to add a used VZW modem to my plan.)

I would love to run a Wirelesstag setup where I can set up my system tie it to the modem (the Hub needs an ethernet connection to a router) and then I can connect it to the modem and therefore see the data from my current location.

Am I over thinking this or does this seem like a cheap data plan for a home I do not want to pay for a full cable bill yet?

Which Wi-Fi/IoT light switch is best for making an empty home look occupied?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 11:36 AM PST

I live in a neighbourhood that has a lot theft and break-ins. The local shitthead/metthhead population is constantly on the prowl and tracking people's "home" and "away" hours. So I'm looking for some Wi-Fi/IoT lightswitches that do a good job making the house look occupied at most hours of work day.

So I'm looking for an IoT lightswitch that:

    • Still works as a regular light switch when WiFi is down
    • Works well over LTE over long distances
    • Reliable, robust hub setup (if it has a required hub)

I've narrowed it down to either GE Z-Wave or Zooz. Leaning towards the Zooz because their light switches have smaller size, which my crowded gangbox will appreciate. And apparently its range is better than the Z-Wave.

Any owners of either care to share their experience? Help me keep the junkies out of my yard.

    Xiaomi ban

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 05:00 AM PST

I have a xiaomi robot vacuum, and just read about the ban being put in effect. While I'm sure no one is going to break by door down to stop my vacuum from taking over the world, should I not update it any more, with the possibility it will be disabled via software or anything? /u/

    This Might Sound Crazy...

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 12:22 PM PST

...but I think I need it. Skip to the last paragraph for the short version.

I'm in a condo, space is nonexistent, I can't move yet & I have three young children. In an effort to save space, I go vertical & maximize with dual, tri, quad (however much I can) use space.

I installed light receptacles with outlets on them in all the closets & I use them in various ways. Downstairs in the foyer closet I have an HP wireless printer hooked up on a top shelf.

We print infrequently & every time the dang thing prints I'm about to lose my mind. Why? Because it sounds different depending on what's going on in the house. Sometimes it sounds like someone is trying to break into the garage/front door, others it sounds like children are jumping on the bed upstairs during nap time. I haven't gotten used to it since I moved it there recently & don't think I will.

I say all that to see if anyone knows of any code written to announce that your printer is printing on say Alexa/Google/Siri? Not sure if this the best place for this post either? Suggestions? Know of anything?

Is my smartthings v2 hub dead?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 08:33 AM PST

After adding a bunch of zwave (2x) and zigbee (x8) switches I noticed that some of them would only work part of the time so I got some smart plugs for repeaters which seems to have helped but today I can put a smart plug in the same room as the hub and it will neither switch the plug or notice a state change.

I seem to have lost the ability to control zwave devices, zigbee devices will switch but the state won't change in smart things.

I'd assume the radio died but adding and excluding devices still works I just can't control a device after it's added.

    Any ideas?

How do I setup an open-source cloud-free home automation system?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 11:02 AM PST

Hello everyone, I'm trying to automate my apartment but I would really like to stay away from using some chinese server that is supposedly safe but there is really no way to know.

In my research I found that are many options to fulfill that premise, but they are pretty much theoretical, I haven't seen a single post that lists how someone had accomplished exactly that.

Software wise it's pretty clear, just pick between OpenHAB and Home Assistant, but it is in the hardware side of things that i'm struggling a bit.

So far, I found there are a 3 options to consider:

    1. Wi-fi devices from Sonoff, Tuya and some other brands and flash them with tasmota;
    2. Zigbee devices with a USB zigbee adapter connected to a pc or raspberry pi
    3. Pre-flashed devices like Athom.

Am I missing any other options? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each of those methods? Have you done something like this? If yes, could you share your setup and how you did it?

Thanks in advance and I can't wait to see how you guys did it!

    Home Automation Needs

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 07:49 AM PST

Hi everyone! So about three months ago I started researching PoE capabilities in home automation (b/c my home is wired with Cat6). I am very interested in a completely PoE smart home and it doesn't seem to be rocket science if you put the time and research in. The problem I am running into is setting up my control room. I have a conference call with Josh ai next week that should prove to be quite interesting so I will use Josh ai as a home automation controller example.

My house is 2 story 4500 square feet with 4 bedrooms upstairs and a separated "playroom" on its on second floor utilizing its own set of stairs.

Currently, i have a tp-link 48 port poe+ switch with cat6 going to every room (set up by me). I have 3 ubiquity unifi nanoHD APs (yes I know its overkill but the price on 3 pack was cheaper per AP). My house is completely wired for whole home audio including in-ceiling speakers, but I have not purchased the controlling components yet. And of course I have your run of the mill google home hubs, google nest cameras and nest thermostats. (I plan on doing away with the camera set up in favor of an NVR setup).

Once I have the josh controller in and the josh nanos installed what is next as far as the processing side goes?

Do I need a powerful pc tower in the room? Do I need a NAS? Do I need some other type of server other than what Josh provides? What do you all suggest? I'm not super wealthy by no means by my wife and I have great jobs and I am willing to put the time and effort into making our forever home as powerful and automated as possible.

A caveat, I am versed in the wiring and switching side of PoE, but as far as processing, servers, and storage, my vernacular is a little depressing so try to lay it out in layman's terms if you can :). It may also help to note that I value my in home privacy over everything.

    Thanks Reddit Fam!

EDIT: I'm definitely open to other comprehensive suggestion not including Josh. I just love the idea of it all coming through my whole home speakers, less use of any cloud services, and, most importantly, to eliminate as much of "the big corp's" abilities to track loads of my data.

    Working shift alarms with alexa

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 03:46 AM PST

    Hey guys,

As the title says, I'm trying to make routines with Alexa to create alarms for my shifts.

Has anyone succeeded in doing stuff like this?

I have 3 shifts, 5am, 3pm, 10pm, is there any way to create alarms with routines and make it so it doesn't ring all alarms? (e.g if I enable the 3pm shift it won't wake me at 5am)

    Thanks

Smart dimmer with preset "on" intensity adjustment

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 05:15 AM PST

Is there a smart dimmer that can preset the turn-on intensity based on the time of day (or others like phone in bedtime mode)?

Bonus points if the dimmer has a presence/proximity/motion sensor in it.

Scenario:1- I wanted slider dimmers for the bathrooms since at night you want to turn the light on at the lowest setting (not opening and then turning down).2- I wanted automatic dimmers so they turn on when you enter the room, as they are windowless and need 100% light use.1- and 2- cannot be combined in a normal dimmer (can't find one), but could on a smart one.

Edit: well my lights are ELV I think (Lithonia WF4), that REALLY makes it complicated now as there are only a handful of compatible dimmers. Seems the new C by GE would work and had dimmer and motion sensor. Otherwise Caseta and a hub and a sensor.

Suggestions for a replacement for GE Smart Switch/GE Add-on Switch

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 06:05 AM PST

I've had 2 GE Smart Switches (Z-Wave) go bad in the last few months. Both were configured as 3-way with a GE Add-on Switch. The add-on switches are still good. These switches are out of warranty, I've had them for 4 and 5 years. I use HomeAssistant with a combo ZigBee/Z-Wave USB controller.

Can I get suggestions for replacements(Zigbee or Z-wave or WiFi)? Or should I stay with the GE/Jasco?
