    Unlocked Automation Smart Plugs

Hi, I'm Josh and I started Unlocked Automation when I needed a large quantity of MQTT controllable smart-plugs. Unlocked Automation manufactures smart-plugs that come pre-loaded with Tasmota out of the box. If you're looking to switch high loads with Tasmota in a UL listed smart-plug check out unlockedautomation.com or find it on Amazon. Skip the soldering and flashing, Tasmota out of the box gets you up and running fast and guaranteed. Please leave me a comment or PM me with any questions.

Thank you to the moderators for allowing this post.

Z-Wave switches - metal gang boxes or plastic?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 06:39 PM PST

Budgeting for a new home build, and wondering if there is a significant advantage to putting z-wave switches in plastic boxes as opposed to metal. Do the metal boxes reduce the range of the network?

Using smart glass instead of window blinds

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 03:08 PM PST

I have purchased a sample of the smart glass window film (pdlc) ND installed it. Has anyone else used these? I have a mostly automated home and would like to upgrade my windows privacy using this. The issue I'm seeing is that when on, the outside scene or scene on the opposite of me, from a distance of 5 or more feet, appear wavy. I know liquid can create such a wave as exemplified in nature, so are the liquid crystals being active causing this distortion? Are there any other smart tint options that fo not have this issue based on experience?

Question on building a powered speaker to stream audio from google home

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 03:14 PM PST

    Hi all,

I was thinking of building a small powered speaker for streaming music in my kitchen using google home. I'm a bit confused looking at amplifier boards for the build because I would love to have the required tech built into the board so I don't have to use one of my old Chromecast Audios. Does anyone know what terms I should be looking for in order to make sure it works? If the board just says "wifi streaming" will that be enough? It has proven to be a hard question to google because I don't know the proper search terms.

    Thanks!

Most cost effective way to automate fan and humidifier using a thermometer?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 03:16 PM PST

    Hi all,

I want to regulate temperature in a bedroom. I plan on having a thermometer trigger a wifi plug and wifi humidifier. Seems pretty simple, can anyone suggest the best brands to do this?

I'm reading a lot about Sonoff Zigbee devices, and also Switchbot.

Meross Smart power strip unable to connect to VLAN'd wifi network

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 03:24 PM PST

Hello r/homeautomation I seem to be having a strange issue with my Meross extension lead.

I have two wifi networks currently setup, one with no vlan assigned to the SSID, one with a vlan assigned to the network.

The extension lead connects fine to the wifi without the vlan but when I try to connect it to the one with a vlan it does not connect

Has anyone had this issue with their Meross smart plug/extension leads?

    Thanks, Leprejohn

    Wiring up a Shelly Dimmer 2 to a 2-prong (L + N) LED?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 06:41 PM PST

    Wiring up a Shelly Dimmer 2 to a 2-prong (L + N) LED?

I am trying to wire a mains-connected LED downlight (DETA X8 Dimmable LED) into a Shelly Dimmer 2.

Here is the Shelly 2 terminals:

    https://preview.redd.it/p60gpkvhysb61.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=d5789bec57d5ca5193794892ae63361d67dcffd1

And here is the LED driver:

    https://preview.redd.it/vzytxmr3zsb61.png?width=2307&format=png&auto=webp&s=e0e0915e882fa78df87b2aace106b509767ffcec

On the left hand side, I have a 2-prong power plug going in to a "L" and a "N", and on the right is where it goes to the LED module itself.

(Australian lightning normally doesn't have a neutral).

My question is - how do I wire up the L/N on the left to the Shelly Dimmer 2?

    Is it:

    • L from LED Driver goes to L on Shelly Dimmer 2
    • N from LED Driver goes to O on Shelly Dimmer 2

    Or some other way?

    smoke detectors?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 09:46 PM PST

Anyone have any good recommendations for smoke detectors that can be added to HA systems?

I do NOT have zigbee. I do have zwave but find it to be expensive per unit. I have alot of DIY type of stuff around the house. Anything with MQTT support would be fantastic. Tasmota?

    Thanks!

    My new panel

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 05:23 PM PST

    My new panel

So I finally found a good use for my 7-inch LCD that I've had sitting around for several Christmases. First I was going to build a car-puter, but the power requirements of the Raspberry Pi I was planning on using just got too annoying (plus I don't like cutting into cars). So finally... this!

This is a Raspberry Pi 3B+ literally bolted to the back of the LCD screen with Plexiglas in between. The Pi has another Plexiglas panel underneath it and everything is bolted together using hardware store screws and stand offs. Came out looking pretty good I think. I had been using an old Nexus 7 to run the Home Assistant web interface on its stock browser but it's gotten to where the Nexus is all but unusable. This is much more responsive. It's a bit of a hack, but overall I'm happy with it.

How to wire this to a zigbee switch UK

How safe is a smart plug behind a $2500 espresso machine?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 06:02 AM PST

Hi there, I recently purchased a very nice espresso machine that needs about 30 minutes to warm up before making coffee in the morning.

I have a spare Kasa 15 amp plug, and have been very tempted to plug it in... but am very nervous about it somehow frying the electronics in the machine if it ever went bad. The machine has a very heavy airplane style switch, which I'd plan to leave in the on position and turn the machine on and off with.

Are there better options out there I haven't considered? What am I not thinking about? Is this safe and I shouldn't be worried?

EDIT: Y'all have convinced me it's totally safe, thanks! All hooked up, looking forward to a warm machine in the morning!

    Smart Home product development

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 12:28 PM PST

    Hey guys!

What's up? I'm currently in the development stage of a smart home hub and wanted to get some product validation / feedback.

Would you be interested in a smart hub where you can connect every electronic in your room? Tv, satellite box, fan, smart plugs, AC...

Would it interest you to be able to use these devices from anywhere (your office, during vacation, before arriving home), or only locally through your router? Consider when you use them from outside your WiFi there will be a cost involved.

And more importantly: what would interest you for this to have? Any functions or specific hardware and sensors?

    Thank you very much!

    EDIT:

It's sort of a vague question some may not understand so specifically I'd like to know what you want in a smart hub: move the curtains, lights on/off, connectivity (is WiFi and zigbee enough, would you need RF connectivity too, Bluetooth, Infrared?) Considering all the hardware would you think $180 is too expensive for a device like this?

I want to know as much as possible so you guys give me feedback and I implement said technologies in the device during the development stage.

    Eufy Wired Doorbell help?

    Eufy Wired Doorbell help?

    Hey all,

I just got a eufy wired doorbell and I installed it to test it out and it's got a red light. I'm thinking that my issue is the chime bypass. I don't have a chime like the guide mentions. My terminals are 0/1/2/3. I've bridged the two red wires together (bridge not shown in image, but would be term 2,3)) which I think is right, but the light on the doorbell is still solid red (which indicates not enough juice.)

If I'm thinking about this right, the white wires appear to be tied together on that terminal, rather than using a wire nut, but i"m not sure if that is problematic or not. Anyone have any thoughts?

PowerShell Script for Controlling Local Eco-Plugs (Woods WiOn Outlet) Devices

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 01:52 PM PST

So I created a script that send HexData to the outlet's IP address on port 80 to turn on or off the device. I decided to share it with you guys! It's on my GitHub for you to download and tweak:

    https://github.com/antoineleduc/PS-EcoPlugs

The reason I made it with PowerShell was to be able to run it without any additional installation required. I can simply run it on any Windows 10 computer.

I have other PowerShell scripts to control my local AND cloud-based smart devices. If you are interested, you can DM me!

    Looking for smart outlet recommendations

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 07:33 PM PST

I recently had a horrible experience with the Teckin SP10 and I am to the point that I'm just cutting my losses and moving on.
I need some outlets that will just flat out work without a bunch of BS to deal with. I have Google Nest WiFi which combines 2.4 and 5.0GHz and doesn't allow me to disable the 5.0GHz for setup.
All I need is a quality smart outlet that works with Google Assistant. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
