    HomePod Mini - automation reliability/setup

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 04:26 PM PST

I have an August Smart Pro lock with connect (WiFi)and 2 LIFX lights(WiFi enabled and two HomePod minis . They're all set up on HomeKit. I have an automation set up where it will turn on the lights whenever the door is unlocked. It usually works fine, but I have noticed a couple issues. Sometimes I'll go to unlock the door and the lights won't turn on. If I go to the HomeKit app to trigger the lock then it usually works fine. However, tonight I went to try the same thing and the lights show as unresponsive. The light switch was flipped on. I was able to toggle the lights on/off with the LIFX app. HomeKit was unresponsive until I flipped the light switch off and on again and waited a bit. Seems to be ok for now.

I am just trying to improve reliability in case I'm not around to troubleshoot. I have two HomePod minis set up on the Main 5ghz network (in a room far away) and the HomeKit devices on the Secondary network. Is there anything wrong with this setup? Does HomeKit ever requiring being nearby and on the same network? Please feel to send me to another thread if this question has been asked before. All are on latest firmware updates.

Advice for moving to a new home

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 03:08 PM PST

So curious to see what advices r/automation community will suggest. At the end of February I will be moving to a new home : home was built around 18 months ago and has already a few things automated (window shade, wired Ethernet, security camera, sound system, etc) but planning to get more things managed through automation. Our main system right now is a mix of different system: Ring for security, MyQ for the garage, Hue for some lights, SwitchBot for a few things that can not be automated (like pressing a physical button), Wemo/Meross for plug, and IFTTT. We do use mostly some Echo Show 5 and 8 around the house as our main control.

Any suggestions on what you wished you did as soon as you moved in or things that should be done !

Best hub for controlling plugs and lights, I want simplicity and scalability.

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 07:02 PM PST

So I plan on using Sonoff/Aqara zigbee sensors, Tradfri remotes, Yeelight bulbs and TP-Link smart plugs to automate room temperature and light functions. I already own a few of these items and they are just tied into voice assistants and simple schedules. I want them to be able to talk to each other and start triggering events.

I've chosen these brands because they have been recommended by other users and seem the cheapest to deploy. Seems like my options to unify them are:

    1. SmartThings

    2. Hubitat

    3. Individual hubs (sonoff/aqara)

    4. Home Assistant (not keen with the learning curve)

Any advice? I don't need power user level control, but I would also like to avoid IFTTT, hence the zigbee/wifi hubs. I could also use Sonoff zigbee hubs+ sensors and wifi plugs exclusively, but I would like to avoid being tied into an ecosystem.

Putting PC to sleep with smart switch?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 05:25 AM PST

I am trying to figure out a good way to be able to shut down, hibernate, or put my PC to sleep using my Amazon Echo dot. I like to sit in bed and watch a show before heading to sleep but I don't like getting up to put my PC to sleep. My band-aid fix has been to plug in both my monitors and my speakers on smart switches so that I can shut them all down at the same time with my echo. The issue is that my PC stays on, and some streaming services don't pause itself which causes my computer to stay on all night instead of going to sleep after being inactive. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could turn my PC off or at least put it to sleep using my echo? My first thought was to put my PC through a smart switch but I don't really think it'd be the best idea to force shut down my computer like that every night.

Cannot control all functions of a Tuya Smart controlled ceiling fan via Google Assistant/Google Home

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 07:26 PM PST

Hello folks, I've purchased four smart ceiling fans which are controlled via the Tuya Smart App (in this case, the "Grid Connect" app which is just another Tuya re-skin).

These ceiling fans expose both light brightness/hue and fan speed in the Tuya Smart App, but in Google home they either do not expose the setting (no fan speed control), or don't react to the settings (light brightness/hue) via Google Home.

I'm curious if anyone else has had similar issues (with anything via Tuya really - it doesn't need to be a ceiling fan specifically) and if there's a way around this as I would like voice control to work properly for everything.

Images here for examples of what I see: https://imgur.com/a/vzHBa51

Home theater lighting, star ceiling, led posters. Im a noob and need help!

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 08:15 PM PST

So I'm a complete noob to home automation. I'm just finishing my theater room in my basement. My theater equipment is in a separate room, so I was looking at getting a harmony elite with the hub to control it. I also have 4 Bazz potlights that I need a smart switch for. I have a chinly fiber optic star ceiling that needs to be controlled by RF or a smart plug. I have movie posters that will be lit with govee led strips with smart plugs for control, and I have hue lights that will also be smart plug controlled. I want to be able to control it all from the harmony remote and Google assistant. I was going to get a Lutron Caseta switch and hub for the pot lights. I need help with everything else. The harmony remote works with smarthings, are they any good? I need about 7 smart plugs so I'd like to keep it somewhat cheap. It doesn't look like Lutron has a smart plug. I just don't want to end up with a million different bind and apps. I wrote this on my phone, sorry if it's a bit fragmented. Any help would be great.

Pairing Globe Lights with a computer monitor

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 04:32 PM PST

Hello, I was wondering if anyone knows a way to make any smart bulb (globe suite lights in my case) responsive to the colours shown on a pc monitor similar to how Hues and Razer do it, or like Logitech with their Lightsync speakers and Corsair with the iCUE lights. Basically anyway for the light bulb to turn blue for example when the monitor screen has lots of blue.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

    August vs Wyze Lock

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 08:10 PM PST

    Hello,

Checking out the August Gen 3 Lock versus the Wyze lock. I'm in an apartment so I can only do this style of lock that goes over the deadbolt. Any reason to choose one over the other? They are similarly priced and both have very mixed reviews, having trouble choosing.

    DIY Smart Washing Machine

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 06:28 AM PST

    Howdy!

I had some time to bring some fresh updates to one of the projects from the past. These just had been posted and the article updates (I'm debating if I should re-do the video).

I have a cheap washing machine that I constantly forget to unload. (machine doesn't make any sounds when finished) At most extreme cases, I left the washing inside for days (which had to be washed again due to an unpleasant smell). So with all my skills, I came up with a very budget-friendly solution!

Now, when the laundry is complete, I get notifications on:

    • Android phones (sorry Apple fans)
    • Google Home
    • Alexa
    • Windows

To make sure I don't dismiss & forget, there is a nagging option that keeps Alexa and Google Home talking to me every 5 min until I go and do the laundry.

This project could be used with other appliances including dishwashers and tumble dryers. It doesn't modify the devices so you get to keep the warranty and comes with fun metrics like:

    • time in standby
    • time of wash
    • cost of wash
    • history of all washes

The total cost is about $15 and it can be deployed in minutes. Full write up here

    https://notenoughtech.com/home-automation/washing-machine-notifications/

    Enjoy the laundry moving forward

    Multi-port Z-Wave interface?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 02:21 PM PST

I'm exploring the world of home automation with Z Wave, and while there are door/window sensors, I'm wondering if it is possible to use conventional alarm door/window sensors for $5 each, and wire them back to a central Z-Wave "bridge" or converter. I'm picturing a Z-Wave device with 8 or 12 screw terminals for I/O. There are single port models out there, but I don't see anything multi-port.

    Arlo vs Ring?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 01:54 PM PST

I've done a ton of researching and it seems like Arlo just edges out Ring in the doorbell and camera department.

What I'm more interested is their 'community'?

Being that Ring seems to be much more popular, I feel like the Ring 'community' alerts and such may be much better. I feel like getting alerted to something before it happens is better than my Ring just recording it happen. Am I correct in assuming so?

Trigger Event When I Arrive at my Gate (no wifi or electricity)

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 02:16 PM PST

    Hi,

I am expanding the automations in my house and would like to know if the following is possible.

I would like to trigger an IFTTT to unlock the gate when I arrive. The gate is located 100 meters away from the actual building so I don't have any Wifi at the gate. Neither is there any electrical sockets close by.

Location tracking is working okay but it is not accurate enough.

What I am thinking of is maybe to put a Tile or something like that in my Mailbox, but I am not sure if it would work.

    All ideas are welcome!

New Home Build Prewiring for flexibility questions

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 03:12 PM PST

We're a few days out from signing off on all the low voltage in the house and need to sanity check what I'm doing.

    • Side Note: In our last home we had Lorex POE cameras and DVR, and it was an absolute nightmare, the cameras disconnected and had to be re-setup every 2-4 weeks. Maybe it was a short in the wire but I'm very hesitant for POE cameras again. The Lorex app felt very clunky, it almost felt like I was using a commercial solution for a small town home.

Main house will be about 3k sq ft

Detached 3 car garage (24ft from main house) with apt above, possibly will rent it out.

Looking to automate through family iPhones/smart display

    • TVs
    • Light switches
    • All door locks
    • Climate
    • Cameras
    • Alarm

I'm somewhat techy, but also work a lot and have 2 small children, aka, not a lot of time to tinker. Looking for a relatively plug and play solution that my very un-techy wife can also operate from a phone app/smart display.

Right now the only 'pre-wiring' I'm having done is surround sound in the master, living room and loft, cat5 (edit: actually cat 6) drops in every room, and exterior power outlets under the soffit of each corner of the house (for cameras, xmas lights etc). My plan was decide later on what brand of wifi camera to use. Probably either Nest or Ring? But tbh I'm not sure what I'm doing.

Basically just looking for general direction on type of prewiring I should set up that can accommodate whatever I decide later. (aka should I be running power to the front door for smart doorbell/camera etc) Thanks!

most reliable, wifi outlets with publicly available control api

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 10:11 PM PST

a question that must have been asked a 1000 times on this sub, I'm in need of a reliable outlet that has a published control API.

don't care of it's udp, tcp.http, but don't want anything requiring authorization if it can be avoided, and nothing that I'm going to have to reverse engineer. simple on/off.

    thanks

Network connectivity issue on TP Link smart switches & plugs several times a year?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 09:27 AM PST

Once or twice a year all of my TP-Link smart switches(4)/plugs(2) will experience terrible wireless connectivity. It's actually happening right now. All the devices are seeing very high latency(up to 4000ms) and packet loss(around 75%) and it can be like this for hours or a whole day, then the problem just randomly goes away and everything is fine for months. The smart plugs are 6~ months old, the smart switches are about 2~ years old. As I was typing this post all the TP-Link devices dropped completely off the network for about 5 minutes, now they're back to high ping spikes and a lot of packet loss.

My phone and my wife's phone are just seeing some minor latency spikes but not dropping packets, same for an idle Amazon fire stick. My Craftsman wireless garage door opener is seeing ping spikes and packet loss, not nearly as bad as the TP-Link devices but enough that our mobile garage door apps are having trouble seeing and sending open/close commands to it. A Rapsberry pi4 is seeing constant 1ms/0% packet loss right now, but a TP Link smart plug a foot away is sitting around 75% packet loss. Pingtest from my wired desktop to the AP is constant <1ms/0% packet loss.

I'm not really sure where to go from here because these results don't make sense, mainly just checking to see if other TP Link users have a similar issue.

    Options for voice information

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 10:57 AM PST

What options are available to have information read to me? Calendar, prerecorded notifications, news, etc. I know that Amazon echo can do that, but I would prefer a non-Amazon option for doing so. Preferably through a Apple Homepod (mini) but if I need to set up a separate speaker that isn't a big issue.

Slim/low profile battery operated motion sensors

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 10:57 AM PST

I'm looking to add some motion intelligence to some parts of my home to automatically turn on/off lights when motion is detected (or not). I've found some rather large sensors like the ones you'd typically see as part of an alarm system, and also those that are included with smart switches. The problem is that not all of the places I'd like to put these are near a switch, and I was hoping to find something small, low profile & battery powered that I could stick/adhere to a wall that wouldn't be an eyesore.

    Any suggestions?

    Automate C by GE

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 10:54 AM PST

We just moved into a new house and I am just getting into automating our home. I've added a C by GE bulb and motion sensor to the Master Bedroom closet. I want that light bulb to turn off after 5 mins. How do I do that? Seems like it should be really simple but for the life of me I can't find anything on it.

    Becoming a #SmartLodger

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 02:26 PM PST

I'm currently a lodger in a shared house so obviously quite limited in terms of the things that I can do/ use but I'm looking to automate things and introduce a bit of joined up living to make things a bit easier for myself!

From time to time I also stay round at my parent's gaffe so would be looking to bring a bit of smart living there too - I've a bit more freedom there but I'm hardly living there!

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations/tips. Also considering portability as I'd be looking to move into a place by myself some point in the coming year or two (COVID dependent as well as what's going on with my current job).

At present I've a Google Home Mini in the bedroom and looking at Smart TV's which are Google Assistant compatible to replace my very old TV. I've also a 'dumb telly' at mum's but I'm not likely to change it.

I'm also looking at changing the lighting in my room with some softer lighting also smart bulbs! Philips Hue stands out to me as a decent little offering. My housemate pointed out getting the bulbs and I'm really impressed at the variety of colours the Hue offers.

Is Home Assistant Right for me?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 12:02 PM PST

I currently own about 15 echo devices, a ring alarm system, and some smart lighting. I've got about 50+ routines so far and that will go up with the house. I also recently began purchasing Lutron Caseta switches to install.

    My questions are,

    - How can I benefit from home assistant?

    - If I begin using home assistant, will I lose alexa voice control functionality on those devices?

    - Will Lutron Caseta automations work offline in the event of an internet outage? Are they faster?

    - Would my Ring alarm be taken offline with home assistant, or would it still work with remote monitoring? Should I be worried about reliability of my alarm system?
