I have 5 thermostats in my house what can I do?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 08:42 PM PST

Hello, I just bought a house that has two furnaces. The first has 3 zones with 3 corresponding thermostats. The second furnace has 2 zones and 2 thermostats. The furnaces electronically close and open dampers to funnel heat/ac to the needed rooms.

I want to upgrade to programmable thermostats that I can control remotely, but I'm trying not to spend 1200 dollars on 5 nests. Any ideas on how I can make this happen? Also, bonus points if it let's me automate other things in the house. Thank you all!!

    Bond bridge for 434hz remotes?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 08:13 PM PST

Has anyone had anissue with the bond bridge for 434hz remotes? I just received mine today and was hoping it would work for my gate motor. Upon adding the remote and testing the command, the bond bridge recorded the button press. Then when testing the button on my smartphone it doesn't work. Any help would be appreciated thanks!

Just starting, looking for tutorials and basics

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 06:56 PM PST

    Hello

I am just dipping my toes into some basics, and have no idea where to even start. I am looking for things like good, informative YouTube channels or tutorials and reviews.

I want to start off simple, with things like lights and scenes set to timers or just being able to adjust the colors of lights. I'm not sure what to trust and there seems like an endless ocean of options, so I would appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

Control zehnder HRV fan speed based on humidity? Possibly via Homekit?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 10:14 PM PST

Hi, I have an ecobee 3 and zehnder comfoair 350 in our home. I am trying to keep the humidity at 50%, the problem is our HRV needs to run 24/7 as the home is extremely airtight and it also exhausts all the bathrooms, and kitchen air. The problem is the zehnder unit has 3 speeds but no setting to control the speeds based on humidity, and often the default speed (2) is too high and ends up dropping the humidity down to 30%.

In a perfect world I'd love the ecobee to change the fan speed based on humidity. I am not sure if this is possible, as it seems there is just an "on/off" for the fan via the ecobee.

Does anyone know of any other solution? I might need to rig up some 3rd party smart hygrometer and somehow wire it into my Zhender to modify the fan speed. But no idea where to even get started.

    Garage roller door sensor

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 08:18 PM PST

Looking at using an aeotech sensor door window 7 on our manually operated garage roller doors, just to tell us if the doors have been left open.

I can't work out how to mount the sensor and magnet however so they don't get smashed off by the stopper on the doors.

    Ideas?

First stab at converting a Konnected Pro setup from SmartThings to HomeAssistant

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 06:05 PM PST

First stab at converting a Konnected Pro setup from SmartThings to HomeAssistant

Ok. Today, I converted my setup from SmartThings to HomeAssistant.

It's been a bloodbath, mainly because I knew nothing about HomeAssistant's taxonomy of entities, but it's up and running with correct triggers, responses and notifications.

I really appreciate the manual state machine, because it makes it really easy to define reponses to arming, becoming armed, disarming, having an alarm pending, and finally triggering. I have buzzer that I wired reusing the old system's keypad wires, and I use various beeps to communicate what's happening.

I don't love HomeAssistant, and what concerns me the most is that you can easily make mistakes in your source YAML that nobody will catch.

I will miss SmartThings, because it was really really intuitive, fast, easy and friendly.

    My setup is:

    • a home with a variety of sensors hardwired when it was built
    • two Konnected.io boards that are replacing a Napco Gemini P816 legacy system
    • an old Thinkpad T420 as a HomeAssistant host
    • battery backup for everything
    • everything running on wired ethernet (it is now or it will soon...)

    ZWave home hub advice

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 03:05 PM PST

Bought a house which prior owners had installed a Wink system which was used to control Leviton ZWave dimmer lights, Honeywell thermostat, Ring doorbell etc. Not sure why, but I'm not really interested in keeping Wink (monthly billing perhaps, company direction?!?). I guess the easy drop back for a home hub to control ZWave would be SmartThings (have Samsung TVs)...but it appears they're no longer sold/in production (in Canada at least). I'm running UniFi AP for the home network, so pointless to go down the SmartThings router which also acts as a hub.

I'm not crazy tech savvy, just playing around with the home automation side of things for fun. Installed a few Wi-Fi bulbs in rooms where I have regular switches. Got a couple of Echo dots, Sonos etc, so looking for a recommendation to help pull it all together into one user interface/app. Heard if I got a Ring home security system it might be able to pull the ZWave devices in and then it could all run through Alexa?!? Any idea what is happening with SmartThings home hub? Is Homey coming to North America...a quick look at that seemed to tick a lot of boxes? Should I just wait a few months to see what 2021 delivers...it's not like I need fancy programming when we're spending 24hrs a day in lockdown and I'm fully capable of turning on/off a light switch!

Thanks smart people, appreciate your thoughts!

Why the smart switches are mostly made of relays for switching? Why not triac?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 02:40 PM PST

    Triac allows dimmer capability.

Almost the same cost of relay.

    Smaller in size than relay.

    So why not?

    3. Smartthings Gen 3 hub
    4. Z-wave compatable

    Thanks

Choosing the best Smarthome/Thermostat for future automation

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 10:59 AM PST

We are purchasing a house and the finished basement is almost completely uncontrolled as far as climate. The master bedroom upstairs is an addition so it is on the long run of the house. I am looking to either add dampering into the house, maybe Keen, and possibly adding in a mini split system for the bedroom along with some heating source in the basement.

The question is, what is my best option for a single system that will control dampers on the main HVAC, integrate with my alexa systems (lighting/Music/Appliances), and be able to control a wifi space heater/mini split system.

Im looking at Ecobee to at least get started but im not sure that can integrate with mini splits, specifically the DIY Mr Cool ones.

    Thanks ahead of time.

This is cross posted to a couple other groups as well.

    Logging Temperature and Humidity Data

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 05:46 PM PST

I have several Wireless Tag sensors in my home (https://wirelesstag.net/) that I use to monitor temperature and humidity data. While I can review data on the wirelesstag apps and web site, I'd like to pull that information automatically and store it in an InfluxDB time series database.

I understand that I can manually download CSV files from the web site and therefore I can write a script of some sort of post the data from those files to InfluxDB.

I'd prefer to automate all of this if possible and ideally avoid the need to download the data to a file as an intermediate step before posting it to InfluxDB. An alternative would be to somehow automate the downloading of the CSV files and then posting to InfluxDB.

I'm more than a little lost as to the right way to proceed.

Any guidance would be more than a little welcome.

    Thank you in advance.

Tiered Dial for lights (When one bulb reaches max brightness, begin turning up bright of next bulb)

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 10:58 AM PST

Hey there, I was hoping for some advice on this.

I have 6 Hue bulbs in my bathroom linked to a Lutron Aurora dial. I would like to configure them such that it will adjust brightness on bulbs in sequence. What would be the best app for setting this interaction up?

2021 Google Home/Nest Hub Setup + New features

Anyone using Inovelli red or Zooz switches with hue lights?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 07:52 AM PST

    1. What z-wave hub do you use? Hubitat?
    2. Is there a delay when turning on lights?
    3. Can you gradually dim lights at the switch?
    4. Can you tie into HomeKit and utilize adaptive lighting?
    5. Is there an alternative to adaptive lighting that can be automated just like it? Hopefully with more customization for color temp and timing throughout the day?

    Thanks folks!

Any idea on implementing Google Home on incompatible home automation service?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 06:49 PM PST

I'm living in an apartment with built-in home automation service made by Samsung SDS. I have a "wall pad" on the living room, and a connected mobile app. With the wall pad or the app, I can control air conditioning, heat, lightings, ventilation, doorlock and such. However, they're just built-in, not compatible with any other services. I want to hook a google home assistant with this system, but I have no clue. Any idea?

How can I push a button (or close this circuit) so I can make my semi-smart kettle smarter?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 07:51 AM PST

I'd like to be able to turn my kettle on automatically in the morning. It is a pretty good kettle, as it will warm to a specific temperature and keep the water at that temperature for up to an hour. However, because it automatically turns off, it also cannot automatically turn on when it receives power.

I'd like to get past that in some way. If I can simply complete a circuit for a moment (it is a pushbutton) I can have the kettle turn on and do its thing. That's all it needs! Is there any way I can do this remotely, preferably through zigbee or Z-wave control?

Globe Lightbulb can only turn green?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 05:42 PM PST

The light works fine normally but when I try to use any of the lights it can only turn green. Like, any of the other colors are just black. Is this a normal problem or should I just buy a new light?
