Posted: 13 Jan 2021 06:04 AM PST What's the silliest or most useless thing you've got hooked up to a smart plug, just because you can? (Useful ideas would be good as well, of course.) [link] [comments]
Posted: 13 Jan 2021 09:31 AM PST Looking for some indoor plant sensors, preferably zigbee or wifi. Want something that measures moisture mostly. Temperature / sun / humidity would be nice too, but not required. Eventually I'll add them to my Home assistant set up once I get my blue. [link] [comments]
Roborock setup/security - guest network enough? Posted: 13 Jan 2021 07:03 PM PST Just got my first robo vacuum (s5 Max) thanks to many hours of research on this sub and a great cyber monday deal. I'm holding off on setup until I can figure out the optimal privacy config, and there seems to be some conflicting opinions from what I've seen - especially between this sub and the roborock sub. Is it good enough to just create a guest network for only the roborock to use? I don't care so much about sending my apt layout data to china, but I also would rather not as long as I can avoid it without losing functionality. Any thoughts on this or other tips for setup/ownership in general would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments]
Need recommendation on a robo vacuum Posted: 13 Jan 2021 07:08 PM PST Hi All! I recently purchased the Ecovacs OZMO T8 and so far have been super impressed with the hardware, yet smashing my head against the wall with the software, more specifically the app. My main gripe is that it maps your house (took 6 tries and a cumulative 8 hours, but that's another issue) and separates the rooms according to its own logic. In my house, the dining room, kitchen, and living room are all connected and it basically treated it like one giant room and called it Area A. Problem is, I need the kitchen cleaned at least twice a day, whereas the dining and living rooms maybe once a week. This means I have to constantly use the "Custom" function to tell it to clean just the kitchen over and over. That wouldn't be so bad if I could simply tell it to repeat the last cleaning, but I've been told by their support team that I'm basically shit out of luck. My question would be: Which robot has the most flexible room cleaning abilities? Is there a brand or model that allows you to delineate your own rooms and vacuum those rooms only? I should mention I got the T8 because we have a lot of hardwood and tile, so the mopping feature was nice. I'm leaning towards the Roborock s5 because of that, but also looking at Roomba since I know it's one of the oldest robot vacuum companies and may have the most feature rich app. Thank you for the help! Intercom Automation Capacitive Touch, Will Pay for Solution Posted: 14 Jan 2021 12:35 AM PST I have an Elvox 7539 Intercom as part of my co-op. I bought a Switchbot Button Pusher, but I've ran into difficulty with the capacitive touchscreen. I bought some Copper Tape. I wrapped the copper tape around a piece of cardboard and connected it to a metal piece from the computer I've rigged it into this silly contraption to see if the theory would work. It does not. I can get the button to temperamentally trigger when I push it, but not consistently (and am not sure if other variables are factoring in). Maybe the copper wire isn't thick enough or it being taped to the touchscreen. If I have to buy additional supplies, I'm fine with it, I just really want the convenience of not carrying around any keys (have an automated door for my front door). Regardless, if someone just helps me figure out how to get this particular intercom to work remotely, I'll venmo them $50 (which I'm sure is a small amount to the genius who can solve this). Thank you. [link] [comments]

Any Wifi enabled theromstatic radiator valve heads that fit? Posted: 14 Jan 2021 12:19 AM PST Hey! I am currently switching my old radiator valve heads for Wifi enabled ones. So far, all the valves I looked at seem to be Danfoss valves, but this specific radiator looks like it has a different type of valve? I don't really know anything about valves as you might already imagine, so it is hard to find out if there are for example any kind of adapters that would make me fit a Tado-like smart radiator thermostat or any other type/brand of smart thermostats that would fit. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Broadlink RM4 Pro vs BOND to control ceiling fans/light? Posted: 13 Jan 2021 05:04 PM PST Which is better? And besides ceiling fans does one do anything else better than the other? I also read that only Aliexpress has a Broadlink RM4 Pro that supports both 315MHz and 433MHz. If I get that version then would it work on all the same devices that work with Bond? Posted: 13 Jan 2021 10:19 PM PST We have a fireplace with a "dumb" paddle switch. I picked up a Lutron Caseta PD5ANS thinking it could do the trick. I opened up the wall plate and pulled back the 3 existing switches, to find that this dumb switch is just connected to two wires, no neutral and no ground. These lead directly down to the fireplace control unit. See pictures, higher gauge wires red and white. I attempted to wire it up as I normally would using ground and neutral, with no luck. There is no readable voltage coming from these red and white wires. Can I use the PD5ANS for this application? What else do I need to add if anything? [link] [comments]

Ameridroid canceled my HASS Blue order. Now what? Posted: 13 Jan 2021 08:57 PM PST My order was unceremoniously canceled after almost a month today. No detail, just "your order has been canceled and your credit card has been refunded." I'm pretty new to HA and need another option. While I work in tech, I'm also midlife, have a wife and toddler, and was looking forward to an easy entry. I loved tinkering a decade ago but simply don't have the time today. Is RPI4 or a NUC my next best option? I'm not looking to geek out hardcore so I would expect ancillary addons/services to be minimal. I just want something that lets me run my growing collection of smart home devices locally and simply. I'd also like a very small, fanless form factor. All my other gear is stashed in my media console and I'd like to stick HASS in there as well. [link] [comments]
Trigger Automation with Energy Monitoring Posted: 13 Jan 2021 08:28 PM PST Hi, I currently use the smart life app, but I will soon move to home assistant and I was looking for a smart outlet that would allow me to set automation within the app when the amount of current exceeds a certain level. For example, if I turn on the TV and the current of the outlet exceeds 1A turn on a lamp. Do you guys have any suggestions of a smart outlet available with this feature? [link] [comments]
Posted: 13 Jan 2021 07:10 AM PST Hi, my post was removed from r/homeimprovement not sure why, but I've come over here for help. I want to customize a doorbell. My boyfriend is a Star Wars nerd, and I want to gift him a doorbell that plays Obi Wan saying "hello there". I can't seem to find a product that will let me upload an mp3 as my doorbell tone or even record a tone for playback. Is this even possible? Can you somehow hack a doorbell to play a custom mp3 sound? Please help, I am out of ideas. [link] [comments]
Posted: 13 Jan 2021 04:24 PM PST Does anyone know of any other fan and light dimmer besides the DS03? A zigbee or zwave device would be fine as as well. My googlefu isn't turning up anything. Also this is for the US so i dont really wanna deal with the iFan03 and replacing caps etc. thanks [link] [comments]
Microwave Interferes with Just One Device Posted: 13 Jan 2021 07:46 PM PST I have four Insteon devices in the same "room" (open kitchen/dining/den area). There are two of the 2-wire dimmers, one fan controller, and one 6-button keypad. In the next room, I have two more Insteon devices, both plug-in dimmers. When I use in the microwave in the kitchen, it drives exactly one of the devices nuts. One of the 2-wire dimmers cycles continuously between on and off and back to on again. None of the other devices are affected; all of them keep working perfectly. Any thoughts? [link] [comments]
Homeassistant - 1-wire connections - when using a VM Posted: 13 Jan 2021 10:37 AM PST I have my system setup running in a Virtual Box on an old Mac. It works fine for Ethernet devices (modbus/TCP) I am trying to add some 1-wire devices. What is the easiest way? - anyone use one of these? http://denkovi.com/usb-to-one-wire-interface-adaptor-converter-thermometer Would this work to pass USB thru to the VM? [link] [comments]
Home Automation newbie here, a question about smart plugs/outlet Posted: 13 Jan 2021 06:58 PM PST Hello, so I'm starting my journey to automate my house and I was just wondering about smart plugs/outlet. Aside from completely eliminating standby electricity usage from appliances that are plugged in but turned off, what are the other advantages of them if most of my appliances would be smart in nature already? From a newbie perspective, I find that it's a bit redundant to plug smart appliances to smart plugs/outlet but that's just me. I'd like to understand if it's really worth having to turn all my outlets to smart ones. [link] [comments]
Scheduled Alerts when Healthcare Device is not Powered On Posted: 13 Jan 2021 05:19 AM PST My son has a trach and is on a ventilator at home. His ventilator is connected to a humidifier at night time that humidifies the air he breaths. It is very important that this device is kept on overnight to prevent his airway from plugging up causing a medical emergency. My wife and I stay up with him in shifts overnight and do a good job turning the humidifier on at the start of the night but sometimes have to turn it off for a few minutes to dry it out if too much water builds up... Sometimes we forget to turn it back on like I did last night. Can you help find me a device that alerts me during specific nighttime hours when the humidifier is not turned on (thus not drawing power)? I found things that would do this but without a scheduler to prevent alerts during the day because we don't use the humidifier then. The humidifier is Fisher & Paykel MR850 Heated Humidifier. Looks to be 115 V plug. Ideally something like the following device, but capable of only triggering an alert (audible alarm or mobile phone alert, anything) during scheduled hours of the day so it only checks if the device is plugged in at night: Accucold PF1KIT Power Failure Alarm Budget of $150 but really just need something that works due to how important it is so willing to pay anything. I don't have a smartthings hub, we do use nest/google home products (cams and thermostats) if something could be used with it or standalone is fine too. Don't need a way to remotely power it on and just want to know when it's turned off during nighttime hours. [link] [comments]
Posted: 13 Jan 2021 04:22 PM PST Just bought a house with two (dumb) thermostats, one upstairs and one downstairs. It isn't a true dual zone system though, it uses baffles to direct airflow. So the thermostats are set independently, but they really need to be within 2 degrees of each other. I'm looking at moving to smart thermostats, and wondering if there is a way to keep them in sync, or within 2 degrees(so if one is increased the others stays at its setting until it needs to increase?) Should I get a Z-Wave extender or a 100-ft long Ethernet cord for my hubitat? Posted: 13 Jan 2021 03:40 PM PST At the moment I have two GE wall switches that are connected to my hub. But the one I want to connect is in the garage which is fairly far away from the router/hub. I tried moving the hub a little bit closer by 20 ft but that didn't help to connect the devices. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
