    Complex garden automation system

    Posted: 01 May 2020 04:40 AM PDT

Due to lockdown and more free time, I am planning to create a fully-featured garden automation system. The aim is to perform selective watering according to the soil status, weather and type of plant.

The system consists of a central hub (a raspberry pi 3b) connected via ethernet and some sensor boxes with an ESP8266 and sensors (soil moisture, ambient light, temperature and pressure). The hub combines data and weather API to create average watering predictions and opens the main water valve. Each sensor box transmits sensor data to the hub via MQTT at a certain interval then going to deep sleep. Moreover, boxes can receive commands from the hub. The hub then opens a valve to water the surrounding area.

I haven't found any suitable solenoid valve that works at 3V to be used with the ESP8266. Since sensor boxes are solar-powered with a single 18650 battery (and a TP4056 driver), the max voltage I have is 4.2V at peak.

I could use a step-up converter to drive 12V valves and hopefully get enough current connecting directly to the battery. Another option is to use a micro servo to rotate a water switch.

Another feature that is causing me problems is adaptive transmission interval: a voltage-current probe connected to the solar panel logs performance data and computes the TX-sleep cycle for the sensor box. Is it reliable to count on the previous week data?

    Thank you

    Smart NFC?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 05:15 AM PDT

I lose remotes constantly. I was wondering if there is NFC technology that allows tags to talk to each other.

In this particular example, you would scan one nfc tag. Once scanned, another nfc tag attached to your lost remote, will emit a noise.

    Is this a thing?

Smart curtain recommendations for a new install?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 07:46 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I have a 6' wide window in my bedroom which has some crappy blinds installed (they let in a lot of light even when closed) so I'd like to install blackout curtains to cover them, but would like to be able to open and close them via Alexa and automations in WebCoRE/SmartThings. The landlord has given me permission to install anything as long as I patch the holes when I move out. I've seen a lot of retrofit solutions but since I'm starting fresh I'm not sure the best way to start (rods, rails, track, etc). I haven't bought anything yet, so I am open to any solution, even if it costs over $100 if it's easy to install and does what I want. All suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

What is you most intricate/thought out automation?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 09:39 PM PDT

I'm looking for a little inspiration so I'll go first. I'm still a newbie so odds are this won't be terribly impressive but I'm quite pleased with myself for the amount of forethought that went into my bathrooms.

In my home I want bathroom lights to turn on when the room is entered by using a PIR motion detector. I also want the lights to turn off upon exit without an unnecessarily long delay.

I want the lights to come on in a bright white state during normal hours but in the middle of the night I want only a single bulb set to a dim red setting so as not to destroy night vision or wake the user up making it difficult to go back to sleep.

Solution: All bulbs in bathroom are smart bulbs, one being color capable and the rest inexpensive white bulbs.

I use a PIR motion sensor to trigger the lights on and a combination of the PIR and a contact sensor on the door to turn them off.

    Rules are

ON - If motion detected turn lights on

OFF - If motion is not detected AND the door is open turn lights off.

The dual input trigger for the lights off feature solved an issue where, without putting too fine a point on it, the lights would turn off if you uh......sit still too long.....if you get my drift.

I have two separate "ON" automations; one that runs during daylight hours and activates the lights in bright white mode and a second that operates during nighttime hours to activate the lights in dim red single bulb mode.

In order to retain functionality of the physical light switch for WAF I am looking at Innovelli RED series switches which have the ability to bypass the internal relay which keeps the smart bulbs powered up at all times regardless of the input of the switch itself and instead behave as an input capable of interacting with the bulbs on a software level. When in non relay mode the power to the bulbs can not be switched off meaning they will never go "offline" which is the greatest weakness in smart bulbs.

Future improvements on my mind are the addition of a LUX sensor to dynamically decide when to use which mode rather than relying on a simple "time of day" variable.

I am currently implementing this in the master bathroom using variations to both learn techniques and also make mistakes before implementing it in my daughters' bathroom and the guest bath.

So far lessons learned include utilizing a dual sensor trigger on the water closet (toilet chamber) to allow the light to respond immediately upon entry but never turn off while you're using the space even when you're..........still. Basically even if you're attending to business such that the PIR decides no motion exists the light can not turn off so long as the door is closed. My wife doesn't use the door to the water closet or the light which is fine I'm just experimenting with the end goal in mind of perfecting the other bathrooms.

I'm still trying to work out how to automate a colored lighting "scene" triggered by the act of drawing a bath in the tub (the wife literally burst out laughing when I suggested this even though it specifically for her enjoyment) as well as adding a humidity sensor to dictate the exhaust fan during showers.

    Smart plug recomedations?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 05:01 AM PDT

Moving into a new house next week and i need to buy a handful of smart plugs to run some things with. Im planning on getting into Home Assistant as well so i would like plugs that work well with that too. Ive played around with WeMo and TP-Link Kasa plugs in the past but im not sure if they are the way to go or if there are better options out there now.

In general, when something is "Google Home compatible" that means it's a wifi device right?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 12:14 AM PDT

I'm having a hell of a time trying to research Google home hubs because they have so many offerings and somehow google Assistant is thrown in the mix.

I'm just curious that if something is "Google Home compatible" and all I have is an android phone with a connection to the internet via wifi, would that be sufficient?

smart door lock for door with two keyways: knob and deadbold that works with Apple and Android

    Posted: 01 May 2020 06:26 AM PDT

We just bought a condo. I don't know how much home automation I may get into but I know if I do I want something I can automate with Apple and Android's home automation capabilities.

All of the smart locks I see work with one lock. Our front door has two: one on the knob and one on a deadbolt.

Are there any good smart locks that support this configuration?

Looking for a simple way to link two plug-in outlets (if one powers on, the other powers on, too)

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 11:15 PM PDT

Is there solutions that wirelessly link (RF or WiFi) two plug-in outlets so that when I apply power to one plug-in outlet, it triggers the other to come on as well? The simplier the better. Ideally it would just be two plug-in outlets that communicate with each other.

New house: ideas for smart/automate/sustainable home?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 01:29 PM PDT

Well, first to all i will be posting this same question to r/smarthome and r/homeautomation, if any of you know another good subreddit to add i will appreciate.

Basically i have an old house, with Electricity, Gas and Water connected. I would love to install solar panels and biogas for kitchen and of course make it smart and automated.

What kind of stuff i have to do at the start and what kind of things can i make to give this house a new life?

Any idea or link will be awesome because i have 0 idea where to start

Looking for a smart switch that will integrate into my current setup (Hubitat, Hue, Echo)

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 05:55 PM PDT

My last house I had a bunch of smart bulbs from Hue. I will use many of them here at my new place, but I bought a decorative lamp that has about 12 decorative bulbs that aren't smart. I want to still be able to control them via Alexa voice. I thought i could get a hue smart switch but it looks like they are all only to be used with their bulbs. Any recommendations?

Edit: I should add the light is a dining room light wired to a wall switch.

Can I make my Google Home say something without me asking?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 06:53 PM PDT

IFTTT allows me to use AdafruitIO feeds as a This and That, but only allows the Google assistant (which works on all devices) to be a This. I want an AdafruitIO feed to be a This, and my Google Home speak up when it reaches a certain value.

Is there a way to make a specific Google Home say something when the AdafruitIO feed reaches a certain number? (I assume it's not possible with IFTTT, I'm open to free alternatives) Thanks!

Need to control smart outlets with my smart switch (different brands)

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 05:17 PM PDT

I have a GE wired smart switch (no hub). It uses MyTS (My Touchsmart). This is the switch:

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H9DC3Q6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_fK2QEbVR73Q1R

I have three lamps that I want that switch to turn on and off. I am plugging those lamps into these smart plugs that use Smart Life.

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PFSRMV4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_NL2QEb0SM6GZG

All these devices are compatible with Alexa, however that will not allow me to create a routine to turn the plugs on when the switch is triggered. The switch is also not compatible with IFTTT, and I believe Smart Life is also not going to be IFTTT compatible soon. Smart life and myts are not compatible with each other.

Is there a program that will work with these devices that will allow me to create a routine to turn the lamps on and off with this switch?

    Thanks

LED Dew Drop Lights White Color

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 04:24 PM PDT

I got these led dew drop lights in the same color cold white. A 3meter one and a 4meter one. But the 3meter is much more cold white than the 4meter one. This should be because of the longer length. I was wondering if this difference in color would be visible with every meter. So between 1meter and 2meter and so forth.

Also would it be possible to cut the 4meter lights to 3meter and then have the same color?

I hope anyone can help me with this.

TP-Link Deco M9 Plus or Eero (Regular, not Pro)

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 03:02 PM PDT

Hopefully this isn't too dumb or a question, but I'm looking to upgrade to an affordable mesh system and both of these are $200 for a three pack.

I'm more interested in performance rather than features, but I can't tell which ends up being the better deal for a single story 3k sq ft house with dead zones.

Or is there anything else out there in the same price range?

    Banggood robot vacs/mops?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 12:21 PM PDT

I've seen some dirt cheap (pun unintended) robot vacs / mops there For my parent's house, they already have cordless vacuum cleaners (Specifically, 2 across two floors) and they work pretty decently, relatively light etc..

For me, it's a case of living with other people, and it can get messy. I honestly cba cleaning that often too, so laziness comes into it too

Are these really cheap ones even worth buying? I've seen one for... £10! That's insane. If I could remotely control something like that, that'd be decent tbf. Little to no manual labour then

Anybody work with water pressure sensors?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 11:03 AM PDT

I'm pretty sure that a water pressure sensor is what I need, but wading through the differences and specs is a bit foreign to me.

I have a wet bar with a glass washer. Glass washers are notoriously finicky about shutting off and can sometimes come on when you don't want them to. Mine is currently set up so that the valve is only open when the bar light (z-wave) is switched on. Problem is, most valves are not meant to be energized for hours and hours at a time. Specs say not to go more than 8 hours without adding a cooling fan. Adding the fan is an option, but I thought that adding a controller that senses when the glass filler and washer are demanding water and then send a signal to switch the valve open (basically the opposite function of an automatic leak detection valve) would be a more elegant solution.

    ...Enter water pressure sensor...

I am completely comfortable with plumbing and electrical work so difficulty of implementation is not an issue. And, like everyone else, I find myself with plenty of free time, so any suggestions or experience you can throw my way would be appreciated.

Has anybody here ever built their own leak detector?
