    Why I love home automation

    Posted: 31 May 2020 02:09 AM PDT

Sharing with you a dream I was finally able to fulfill with home automation.

I love sleeping with a shutter open all night for the fresh air, but up til now the sunrise would wake me up, so now - just before sunrise, the shutter closed so the light won't wake me up.

and just before the alarm clock starts buzzing, the shutter gradually opens to help me wake up :)

what other dreams have you fulfilled with home automation?

Location sensors for triggering reminders based on where I am in the house?

    Posted: 31 May 2020 06:24 PM PDT

I want to try using software & sensors to help me with tasks my brain sucks at remembering on its own.

These sort of things would be really helpful:

    • If I'm away from my desk for more than 15 mins during work hours, ping me a reminder.

    • When I go to the kitchen, remind me to clear some items off the drying rack.

    • When I go to the bathroom, remind me to wipe surfaces.

I'd also like object-specific reminders, eg.:

    • If I'm not in bed at midnight, ping a reminder every 5 minutes until I go to bed.

    • If I walk out the kitchen and I've left a tap running or fridge door open, warn me.

    • On a Saturday morning, when I go near the laundry basket, ping a reminder to wash it.

All sensors need to be automatic - nothing that relies on me remembering to press a button.

I've looked at Bluetooth beacons, but I don't know how that works if there are several in one area, it would also get expensive if I need to buy several for each room. NFC tags are cheap but only work up to 4 - 5cm, so I'd need to remember to scan it. Any other ideas?

Help me pick smart switches please!

    Posted: 31 May 2020 11:35 AM PDT

I'm sure this question is asked ad naseum around here but I am a little overwhelmed by all of the options to be honest.

I currently have 2 regular switches and a dimmer knob in a room all behind the same coverplate. 1 controls the fan, 1 controls the fans light, and the dimmer knob controls 2 can lights.

I have Samsung SmartThings Hub and Google Home Mini.

I'd love to be able to control the lights with phone and voice and at the switch if possible and I'd love them to be able to dim still if possible. Bonus points if I can control the fan variably too but that's not as high of a priority. I want them to all look uniform behind 1 cover plate vs 3 individual cover plates.

I don't have a specific budget in mind and will entertain anything if the value is worth the price. Suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any help!

    Ceiling fan + light controlers

    Posted: 31 May 2020 11:26 AM PDT

As anyone seen a ceiling fan you can control the fan speed and light with z-wave?

The reason I ask is because I have a car port with two lights in it. They are controlled by a 3-way switch from the house and garage. I would like to replace the lights with fans that have light fixtures on them. I still want to be able to control the lights and fans independently (not each fan, just light vs fan). I am thinking about trying to put a z-wave module in each fan, then wiring in the power and using the switches as dummy controllers. Anyone have a better solution?

    Vesync problem syncing with IFTTT

    Posted: 31 May 2020 03:55 PM PDT

I have been using Etekcity light switches with Vesync & IFTTT for over a year without any problems. Recently I updated the firmware on my Etekcity wall switches and now I can only control the devices with Vesync, but not with IFTTT. I've tried hard resetting the switches to factory condition and relinking them through Vesync and IFTTT. Is there any reason why Vesync wouldn't be linking up with IFTTT? I can only control the switches now directly through Vesync. Thank you.

Relay or devices to switch 1 HP motor (pool pump) AND monitor power consumption?

    Posted: 31 May 2020 06:04 PM PDT

I'm trying to find something similar to the Sonoff POW R2 but for a 1 HP pool pump.

I know the Sonoff POW R2 is rated for 15A, but because a pool pump is an inductive (?) load, it needs the relay to be de-rated and the Sonoff POW R2 isn't powerful enough.

I can use a standard Sonoff Basic and a contactor to switch the pump on/off but that won't help me monitor power/current consumption.

    Thanks for any advice!

are there any robot vacuums that won't get stuck under dressers, shelving, couches, etc?

    Posted: 31 May 2020 04:42 PM PDT

our biggest issue with our last one is it would go around the house and just get stuck on so much furniture. it's your standard vacuum size of about 3". something like 2" would be better or maybe something that can sense what's ahead of it better. thanks!

    Smart bulb and smart switch

    Posted: 31 May 2020 09:32 AM PDT

    Hello,

I have 3 smart bulb from Philips in my home, they work very well with Alexa. Except the wife acceptance factor is very low because she wants to continue to use the switch and not Alexa everytime.

What I can do to synchronize the switches and my hue bulb? I would want a open source solution not connected with internet (just my local network) if possible (I have an openhab installation).

Can I put something on my switch to change his behavior like : if you put it off, the light goes off, but not the electricity so I can continue to switch on with Alexa?

    Thanks for your recommendation.

    Edit : 2 bulb have 2 switch.

    Gosund Smart switch install

    Posted: 31 May 2020 09:13 AM PDT

I am trying to install a gosund smart switch. The box has 3 wires coming in. It looks like the electrician took power to the light and the feed a wire to the box to control. So basically there is no neutral. The neutral wire in the box is the load wire or out wire. Since his wiring would provide constant load to the switch box can I connect the neutral and live wires to the hot wire in the box to make the switch work?

Looking for some advice on how to route a camera cable through my garage wall to the canopy outside.

    Posted: 31 May 2020 02:29 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

I just wanted some advice before I started cutting / drilling etc.

I'm trying to fit my first outdoor security camera from the over hang of my garage.

Above my garage door is a slight canopy that over hangs - I think it's called an eave.

    Looks like this:

    Eave https://imgur.com/a/RMRafLW

My question is how would I route a cable through my garage to mount the camera hanging from this canopy?

I'm thinking of cutting a small square I can fit my hand through, assuming I have access to the interior of the canopy from the garage? I'm not 100% sure though.

Or would I have to go through the ceiling of the garage rather than the wall?

I could always just mount it through the wall but I feel like hanging from the overhang will provide a better angle and look more professional.

Any advice would be awesome thank you

Help me! - I dont understand the water leak detectors

    Posted: 31 May 2020 02:23 PM PDT

I see a lot of water leak detectors, but I don't really understand them......

In order for them to be very effective, you would have to place alot of them around the house to cover all connections/joints of your water system.... which would be a big investment right?

They surely if you get a notification to say somethings leaking, then by the time you have returned home (providing you are away from home) and resolved, then surely the damage has already been done?

Ok, your house might not be fully flooded, but how many people do you know whose house has fully flooded due to a leak?

    Best/Simplest smart doorbell?

    Posted: 31 May 2020 06:25 AM PDT

What is the simplest and best smart doorbell system available? Im specifically looking for something that can instantly show who's at the door on phones and also screens around the house?

Initially my thought was Ring and some Echo Shows for in the house, but I'm wondering if there are other options? The most vital feature is simplicity and "just works". I'm not interested in investing time and effort hand cranking a system, and it needs to be useable by anyone without requiring teaching people how a doorbell works.

    Thanks.

Help finding low-voltage, in-ceiling bluetooth speakers that are Alexa compatible

    Posted: 31 May 2020 07:40 AM PDT

We're looking for low-voltage in-ceiling bluetooth speakers that are Alexa compatible. The link below is one of the only ones we've seen, but I'd prefer a more reputable speaker brand. Anyone have any suggestions? I was so bummed that Sonos doesn't have anything like this yet.

Google Smart Home on Apple Homekit using Hoobs

Heres a step to step guide to Install the GSH plugin using hoobs - Very straight forward installation and simple way of enabling the plugin by using just 1 value and i.e. the Google token. Once installed - we will also configure the plugin to transfer only certain accessories.

Plus got my 4 year old son Liam to assist with the demo. Happy Automation ! Cheers !

Best option for smart dimmer switches and Google assistant

    Posted: 31 May 2020 04:54 AM PDT

Coming from a Philips hue setup in my recessed lighting with Google assistant. Moving to a new house where all the lights are led disc lights. Not going to replace those so I was hoping I could find a good system for my house to be able to find and control using Google assistant. Thanks in advance!
