why are most white smartbulbs a warm color temperature ?

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 10:19 AM PDT

I was trying to get some smart bulbs but 5000k ZigBee bulbs are so hard to find, most of them are 2700k and I hate that color of light.

why do manufacturers make most lights "soft white"?

Where could garage door sensor be hiding?

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 11:00 AM PDT

So yesterday I set up Konnected to replace an unused alarm to get control of its sensors. This worked great for the motion sensors inside the house. I saw there was a sensor for the garage door additionally hooked up. I plugged that into Konnected, but its always showing as open. I decided to try tracking it to see if there was a problem with the sensor, or a resistor anywhere. I cannot find ANY kind of sensor in the garage. The only thing in there is the normal sensors that know somethings in the way of the garage door closing and will reopen it if the path is broken. On the ceiling i did find a wall wart plugged in with wires coming off the bottom going up into the ceiling. Im in AZ, and its over 100* here, so im trying to limit my time in the attic to trace the actual wire. What kind of sensors are usually used for alarm systems for garage door open/closed? What should I be watching for or what will it look like?

Edit-Solved this. Garage door meant the actual door from the garage to the house, and not the garage door. I looked at i can see the sensors in the frame and door and it changes state when open and closed. Much less useful than the big door :-(

new home - need doorbell recommendations

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 11:13 AM PDT

would like recommendations on which universe to buy into for video monitoring. home is new construction and i had all doorbell and camera locations prewired with ethernet for poe devices. the real difficulty is proving to be the doorbell. i wrongly assumed that doorbells had graduated to poe like so much else, but i guess not so much. with poe as my power and signal connection, ring is the only mainstream mfg that i see. everyone else (including ubiquiti) is still relying on separate power and wifi. for that reason i had planned on staying with dream machine pro for nvr and unifi protect cameras but if i have to go with a 3rd party doorbell anyway, the better option is to use a traditional nvr and have the doorbell and all cameras feeding back to the same device. i do like the ring's ability to alert me whenever there's a button push and the poe ability tho..

if i'm willing to forego poe for the signal and fall back on wifi for now, which doorbell cam works reliably with onvif nvrs and is fast enough upon button push to be useful? cameras choices are not an issue.

Getting *anything* useful out of the "Velux active with netatmo" control system

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 05:07 AM PDT

I ended up buying this uber-stupid device because apparently it's impossible to control velux skyligths and their blinds in any other way, since every transmission is encoded with the io-homecontrol protocol.

The thing is this smart device is even more stupid than you'd imagine from the description. Basically, you can't create scenarios. You can't set your own rules. You can't interface with IFTTT nor with any single home automation standard whatsoever.

It's got a cool air quality meter but you can't even get a plot in the app, let alone extract data.

So, does anyone know any way to get anything at all out of this device? Ideally I'd like to get data out (to control other devices and to monitor energy efficiency) and to set my own rules to open/close blinds and windows. Is there a way?

Currently, the only thing I can do is to bypass the "active control" and manually control the app myself.

Need help find a surge protector

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 06:38 PM PDT

    Hello,

I've been searching for hours trying to find something and I can't quite find what I'm looking for and thought this might be the place to ask for help.

What I want is a 4-6 plug surge protector with at least 1 USB 1 USB-C port charging (preferably with quick charge and or power delivery but not a must-have) that is also "smart" with the voice control and schedules you can set via an app but most importantly I want to be able to see how much energy is being used in total and have the ability to turn off each socket individually. Lastly if at all possible, I'd like for it to be compact.

    I've found items that come close but not quite what I want, here are some examples;

    Smart canless recessed lights.

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 11:25 AM PDT

So I am trying to replace some lights in my basement with canless led lights. My plan was to just use a smart switch and some simple retrofit leds, but I was thinking it might be nice to have changeable temperature on the fly instead of having a switch on the inside of the light. Anyway, I can't seem to find anything that would work except for some off brand on amazon. I know they make some that screw into the existing light socket on a can, but I am looking for something that can be installed fresh without a can already being there. Anyone have any ideas?

Building a Smart Apartment: Lighting and Audio System Set-up Advice

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 01:28 PM PDT

    Hi r/homeautomation,

I am moving to a new apartment in about a week. I have always wanted to build a simple and clean smart home system. But wow, there are a LOT of products out there, at different price points, with different configurations.

I am currently looking to integrate a sound system and smart lighting system with my Amazon Alexa.

    • On the audio front (Vizio), I should be set. The sound system carries Bluetooth capabilities.
    • I am looking at various smart LED strips to place around my apartment (kitchen, bedroom, living room).
    • I am also interested in using smart light bulbs. I would love for all my LED strips and bulbs to be seamlessly controlled using my Alexa application.

As I am trying to integrate multiple LED strips and bulbs together, does anyone have any recommendations on products and best practices to make this a seamless process?

As I am a beginner, I would appreciate any and all advice!

    Thank you.

Just ran my Roborock S6 for the first time and I had an issue where it jumps up and down while driving on the carpet in my bedroom

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 06:05 AM PDT

Is tripping on mid-low pile carpet normal for roborocks or is there a way to fix this? Didn't have any trouble with a Neato d3 nor the Samsung POWERbot R7040. Also of note is that it only trips when going in one direction down the carpet. When it turns around and goes the other way, it works fine.

Edit: Tried to run it without the side brush and without the main brush and still having this issue.

    Servo Automated Deadbolt DIY

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 04:49 PM PDT

I'm learning for fun here so please be easy 😅

I'm planning to build an automation for my garage door dead bolt lock. It'll be servo maneuvered, wifi switched, battery powered (depending on servo), and secured onto my existing lock. Btw, the door frame seal makes it slightly harder to lock and unlock. I'm also not exactly sure on the servo placement. My 1st thought is to literally mount it onto the deadbolt lever. Here are my questions:

    1. Estimated, how many kg's (torque force in kilo grams) should the servo be able to move? Without personally knowing the difficulty of turning my lock lol.

    2. Would a 9v battery be strong enough to power the servo with said torque force?

    3. Is mounting the servo directly on the turn lever a terrible idea? What would you recommend?

I'm basically trying to make a not as pretty over lever Wyze lock - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B085R7J5V4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Tp3gFbJ6KAGXK

    Best water leak sensors

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 10:24 PM PDT

We recently had a slew of leaks around our apartment (first time home owners) - brand new water softener + RO filter system with faulty parts, fridge condensate, basement drain valve backup (probably due to improperly installed garbage disposal choking our pipes)

So it seems like a good time to call a plumber and also install some smart sensors around the house to send us texts/emails and alerts to warn us immediately and help reduce leak damage. The basement has a "FLOODSTOP" automatic shut off valve with a sensor near the water softener but I'd like a smart home system in addition, for real time alerts. We have hue bulbs, multiple google homes & lutron switches as of now in our leaky little condo.

    Any guidance appreciated!

Favorite way to controll a bathroom fan?

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 04:11 PM PDT

What is your favorite way to control a bathroom exhaust fan?

    • On/off switch
    • timer
    • time delay switch
    • humidity sensor

A timer is simple, will never run when you don't want it, but is another thing to remember before a shower. I've liked switches that turn on the bathroom light and run the fan for 15 minutes after the switch is off, but they are annoying when used accedentally and the fan cannot be stopped. A sensor would be nice if it works.

    3 Way dimmer options

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 05:59 PM PDT

I'm new to the switch game and I'm open to anything that does what I need:

3 Way dimmer with integration to Home Assistant w/ physical dimming control in my media room.

Currently my 3 dimmers are co-located in a central 3 gang box in my media room, unfortunately this location does not have the Line for each circuit in the box. I believe this means that something like Zooz or Innovelli would then need to be installed at the other locations and these switches would need to become "dumb on/off".

For my setup this would result in:

Top of stairs - Smart dimmer

    Basement walkout - Smart Dimmers x 2

    Media room - Dumb On/OFF

WAF dictates that physical dimming control be maintained within the media room.

I believe the GE/Jasco or Leviton would suit my needs, albeit at a higher price.

The addon switches in both cases could go in the media room to preserve physical dimming capabilities, while the intelligence can be spread through-out the basement.

Maybe I'm looking at the wiring diagrams wrong, hopefully there's another option.

    TLDR --

I want centralized physical dimming control maintained but the central location doesn't have the power feed. What options do I have. Any radio, home assistant compatible.

Control smart bulb colors with a physical switch (not app or voice) ?

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 05:57 PM PDT

I have a room with 6 BR30s and 3 A19s smart color (RGBWW) bulbs, operated as a single group. They run from within the "SmartLife" (aka TUYA) app as well as via Alexa and are powered off a Leviton Smart WiFi dimmer switch.

I'm fully open to replacing every bulbs, the switch or putting in a hub.

But what I want is to be able to control on-off, color and brightness of the entire group with a physical switch so no more fumbling with an app at night or yelling at Alexa when the family is sleeping.

The switch could be a wall mounted one OR hand held (better; like Lutron Caseta Pico Remote which can't to color).

Does such a thing exist or only after we have flying cars?

    New House, New System

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 05:14 PM PDT

    Hey Guys,

Been a while. We're moving into a new home and rather than using Alexa to control devices independently, I'd like to put some more thought behind how everything is tied together and introduce more automation.

    Here's what I'm bringing:

    LIGHTING Caseta Switches/Dimmers

    HVAC ecobee x2 + 4 sensors

    DOORBELL Nest Hello

VOICE ASSISTANT I've got a Show and two Dots Also have 3 Home Hubs (I'm not wed to either system)

    ROBOTIC VACUUM Deebot

    Here's what I don't have...

Garage: I could grab another Meross.

Alarm system: House has existing system, with a number of window and door sensors and a few motion. It dates back to 2006 with an enormous panel and while it chimes internally, it doesn't appear to have ever been activated. Have never heard of the brand, Monitronics. Recommendations?

Leak sensors: I'd like to have several in the basement and utility room reporting status to me. Recommendations?

    Tying it all together:

Historically, I've just used Lutron Caseta and some routines with Alexa. I've not had a dedicated hub. I use a Galaxy S20+ so no Apple HomeKit. Trying to transition to lots of disparate apps to one.

Very tech savvy and handy, but not a developer. What would you recommend to tie this all together?

Thanks and sorry for the essay!

New Construction - Smart Light Switches

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 08:51 AM PDT

    Hi everyone--

Building a new home and have tons of decisions to make! In my current apartment, we use ZooZ dimmer switches and a handful of standard switches (in 3 way locations). Overall, I've been fairly happy with them, but thinking of moving towards Lutron Caseta in the new house as we'd likely get Lutron capable window treatment as well.

A couple of questions for you all: - In 3 way switch locations, can I use one Caseta dimmer switch, with a standard switch in the other location? Or does it have to be a Pico? - I haven't found any bulk pricing-- do they ever go on sale?

    Thanks in advance

TP Link 3-Way Switch (in 4-way setup) Issues

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 06:52 AM PDT

So I've read here and other places numerous setups where people have been able to get the TP Link 3 way bundle to work in a 4-way or even 5-way setup. I've not been so lucky.

I initially followed the thread found here: https://community.tp-link.com/us/home/forum/topic/161800 and at first thought I was successful. It worked on my Alexa app, and both of the switches would turn the light on from the off position. Once one switch turned it on, however, the other would act unpredictably until you turned it off from the other switch. To further complicate things, the dumb switch in the middle had to have been left in the on position, and basically didn't serve a purpose.

At time, when turning on one switch, the light would come on for about 5 seconds, and then the other switch would click and turn it off.

I tried swapping the switches places thinking that may be the issue. While things acted a little differently, it was basically the same issue.

I am using the neutral wires, the middle "stock" switch just has two travelers and two power wires.

I read a few posts here (one of the reasons for trying to swap the switches) but nothing I've read seems to help, nor describes the behavior I'm seeing.

I'd really like to stick with the TP Link system (I've already setup many single switches and bulbs, plus own the 3-way setup). I'm going to do exhaust all options prior to looking into switching.

Is there any advice anybody could share?

Oh, and I did have an electrician come by. That was fruitless. He new how to wire the things, but when it came to working with home automation, I'd have better luck having my mom try to set it up for me...

    Garage Door sensor monitoring

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 02:07 PM PDT

Has anyone got an automation for a garage door that includes monitoring the beam obstruction sensors?

Monitoring for open/close etc is all well and good, but I want an indication if the door is being blocked. I also want to use the existing door sensor for this.

From what I have researched this may be possible by implementing a 'missing pulse' sensor with an arduino or similar. That's what I'm going to try in the absence of any better ideas redditors here may have.

Preparing a mobile home for automation

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 08:42 AM PDT

I am having a new mobile home build. And I would like to setup some home automation in it at some point. However I don't have the budget to do it right now. But I would like to prepare for it as much as possible so I don't have to open up walls in the future. Adding stuff underneath the trailer can obviously be done later.

My idea was to have conduit running from floor to ceiling every other metre or so and at key locations like doors, windows, kitchen and the tv. Then cap them all off underneath the floor. That way I can just dril into the conduit wherever I want to place a device and then run the cable and wires down under the floor and to the utility cabinet.

Does anyone have some tips or ideas about this. Any help would be much appreciated.

Is there a way to control a garage door with a light switch or some kind of single gang decora sized switch?

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 03:33 PM PDT

I have a detached garage building near my back door. I'd like to set up some kind of switch on the wall next to an existing light switch that will act like a universal garage door opener and open and close the garage door. There is no wiring between the garage door and my back door so it needs to be all wireless.

Anyone know of a way to do that?

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 03:31 PM PDT

Or does anyone know of a system that can incorporate crawlspace humidity sensors into its app/interface? Needing camera, motion, contact, and siren/base station with siren. Maybe glassbreak if it's recommended.
