Unlatch a small gate in my yard remotely? Posted: 24 Aug 2020 05:39 PM PDT I'm trying to devise a way to unlatch a small gate in my yard using Zwave, Zigbee, RF or similar. There's no electricity in the area, so it needs to be battery powered. The gate can spring close, I just need a motorized, battery powered latch that can hold the gate open until I press a button from 100 feet away My thought was to use a zwave relay that can run off of a 12v battery, connected to some sort of latch. Can anyone point me in the right direction for what components to use? Will it even work as described? [link] [comments]
Smart buttons that I can stick anywhere Posted: 24 Aug 2020 01:32 PM PDT Does anyone know if I can buy a button that I can set up anywhere that would connect to my wifi and have it set to a custom command through Google home to turn on/off smart lights or outlets? [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Aug 2020 07:06 PM PDT I currently have 3 ceiling fans. One is operated entirely by a remote and the other two are operated by an in-wall Casablanca Intelitouch W-32 panel. It seems like the remote one should work fine with Bond, but I cannot figure out if the Intelitouch panels can work with it. Does anyone know? Or is there another option out there? I've already taken one Intelitouch off the wall to see the wiring and there aren't dedicated fan and light wires so I'm assuming it's using some kind of RF to control things? [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Aug 2020 07:06 PM PDT I need simple ish due to time mostly. The family is used to google home and I would like to get a dashboard like setup, ideally loaded to a wall mounted tablet that is accessible on the phone. Out of the box it seems like that should push me into HA, but that seems more involved than I can really commit to? I am trying to figure out if Hubitat makes sense for me and what the first batch of things I should buy with the hub. Or if my Smartthings Hub is good enough. If I install a bunch of things that I need to add/remove over time it will be my own funeral. My family cannot deal with one more app or thing to manage and it needs to just mostly work. My thought is with the hubitat dashboard to mount a couple of tablets around the house, along with the phone app. However, it occurs to me, I might be over doing this and should just start loading sensors onto ST. Things I am considering: - Hubitat hub? - Android tablet mounted on the wall for a dashboard - 10 door/window contact sensors - Relay for Garage Door / Contact Sensor For the Hub: I have ST and google home. I am concerned HA has a huge learning curve and time commitment. I'd like to get more adept at adding in IFTTT. Is ST good enough, or does Hubitat or something else like HA or another platform more friendly out of the box? For the contact sensors - small enough and at $20 range a sensor wont break the bank. Any recommendations on brand for z-wave? - Aeotec seems pricey - ST sensors seems ok but kind of bulky [link] [comments]

Smart switch for Philips Hue that can disable internal relay? Posted: 24 Aug 2020 06:44 PM PDT I've spent the better part of 2 afternoons searching for this. Anyone know of any switches which:
I don't want to:
Inovelli (and maybe Zooz?) come close, but are Z-Wave. RGBgenie also comes close, but doesn't fit a decora plate. There must be something out there that's like the Inovelli but for Zigbee, right? [link] [comments]

Home automation / Smart things to save the day Posted: 24 Aug 2020 12:22 PM PDT 10 yo daughter has been getting up at 3 or 4 in the morning to play video games so I created an automation to automatically turn off the TV if it is turned on between midnight and 6 am. Problem solved (until she figures out what's happening) [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Aug 2020 05:51 PM PDT Total noob here buying my first smart lock for the front door. It seems to me WiFi is better because I don't need a Z-wave hub. Honestly, I probably won't be automating anything else other than the front door lock. Is WiFi okay or is there some compelling reason to invest in a Z-wave hub? [link] [comments]

Preferred/Best/Most Secure Smart Lock Protocol/Automation Platform? Posted: 24 Aug 2020 05:25 PM PDT Hi all, I will soon be replacing our exterior locks, and I'm planning to install smart locks. I'm leaning toward Schlage to get an ANSI Grade 1 lock, (or August on a grade 1 deadbolt), but I don't know what the best protocol or automation platform to use for our locks. Obviously the lock is only as secure as the home automation protocol is, but I'm not savvy on the differences in home automation and which would be the most secure. I currently have a z-wave controller (honeywell tuxedo touch) that we use with our alarm system, and a few z-wave light switches that we control through the totalconnect app. Is z-wave my best path forward for security/usability, or is there a better alternative? I'm open to changing my setup for best results, but I would prefer not to add another app if I don't have to. Other info: our network is a current gen Eero setup, and we have a number of ring cameras, use alexa/echo for most of our devices, and are an ios mobile household. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Handling multiple payloads in NodeRED [tutorial] Posted: 24 Aug 2020 06:33 AM PDT If you ever wanted to display a chart in NodeRED, like one that shows temperature and humidity at the same time, you know that you have to submit multiple payloads. Instead of splitting the data into separate flows (also a valid strategy), you can take advantage of the function node and 4 different ways of handling multiple payloads:
This tutorial will explain how to do this in detail so your NodeRED flows are much simpler. It's an add-on article to my 7 part NodeRED series for beginners. [link] [comments]

Starting to think about landscape lighting. Suggestions? Posted: 24 Aug 2020 03:52 PM PDT It'll be a few months down the road before I make any purchases, but I'm starting to think about adding wired landscape lighting to my smart home. I have easy-to-access receptacles outside as well as a large (wired) crawl space where wiring/transformers could go if necessary. I like the idea of LEDs but would want to choose lights that mimic the warmth of incandescents. My house's "backbone" is RadioRA2, but I've integrated lots of different tech thanks to Home Assistant (Zwave, Wyze, Tradfri, etc.). I have experience flashing Sonoff components and doing small soldering jobs, so "nerdy" recommendations are OK. I'm not interested in flashy or unconventional -- no color-changing LEDs in the eaves. I'll just be doing pathway lights, uplights, maybe a spot or two. They'll be on at dusk, off at dawn. Very traditional. What should I begin thinking about? Any particular configurations, vendors, or equipment you've had success with? Any cautionary tales? Thanks! [link] [comments]
[Help request] Energy meter Efergy E2 classic data Posted: 24 Aug 2020 05:11 AM PDT The eLink SW provided by Efergy to process the energy readings is quite bad. Does anyone know how to export or access the data? I copied it from the E2 monitor to my laptop, but it seems the data is stored in a password protected data.db file. Any help to get my data available would be appreciated! [link] [comments]

How to turn on/off and dim and LED strip with Shelly? Posted: 24 Aug 2020 09:07 AM PDT Hi, so I bough few Shelly Relais (1, 2.5, dimmer 2, rgbw) for fun and testing purposes, but I'm no electrician and struggle a little bit the wiring diagrams. I have a 24V LED Strip and a 24/35W power supply for that strip. The endgoal is to turn this LED strip on and off or dim it through Home Assistant through automations. Alternatively I could use the built in Shelly automations. But I have not clue how to wire this. I don't have any physical switches for that LED strip. I did cut of a power cable with 3 wires for testing the LED strip and power supply, and that works as expected. Can someone please help me out and nudge me in the right direction on how to wire this for my goal? Image of current setup: https://i.imgur.com/MrKMNxG.jpg [link] [comments]
Will Vivint thermostats, door locks, etc connect to any non-Vivint co tell panel? Posted: 24 Aug 2020 08:47 AM PDT Former Vivint customer. Has to cancel service due to military move and they let me keep my equipment free of charge. Since you need an active Vivint account to use the app to connect to the Sky Panel, I can no longer do that. Does Vivint's equipment connect to any other brand of control panel? Make dumb security alarm smart Posted: 24 Aug 2020 04:27 AM PDT Hey guys I live in a house which has a traditional security system setup.. with door ,windows and motion sensor, i have seen couple of options in the market which connect with the old system to make it smart... what would be my best option...any suggestions????? Posted: 24 Aug 2020 07:12 AM PDT I did a little searching around the internet's and didn't really find the answer I was hoping to get. With smart light switches that you can put on a schedule, does the device that set it up (like an iPhone with the corresponding app) need to be in the house for it to work? I was wondering about making my front porch light turn on/off at sunset/sunrise and I'm not always home during those times. We also don't have extra iPads etc around if a controlling device is needed. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Can I use a physical button to start Spotify playlist on a Home Mini? Posted: 24 Aug 2020 07:03 AM PDT I want to use a physical button or switch that anyone can press to start a specific one of my Spotify playlists on a specific Home Mini. The playlist needs to be started at any time (so can't use scheduled routine). Can I use a Logitech Pop Button for this? If not, is there another way I can achieve this, please? Thanks!
