Building a house. How smart can I make it with my budget? Posted: 23 Aug 2020 04:09 PM PDT I'm on the project licensing phase for my 4 bedroom, 3 washroom, living room, dinning, office, hallway, double car garage and quite a large yeard. I work in IT but I'm not much into home automation and despite knowing some featured I don't know many options as hub systems and devices. I decided to aside from all other required tech for the house, such electricity and HVAC, to add a budget of $2000 for devices and a hub (workmanship not included). What can I do, or what would be better to turn smart in my house under this budget? What devices should I buy, etc. I know the budget is not high, but I'm considering being myself doing the installing, and it terms of hub/software I would prefer to go with something Free/Open Source, with a good online community, so I can learn with, and expand or add new features to my house in the future. For now I just want to know what $2000 can buy and how smart my home can be with it. [link] [comments]
How to set MyQ to close garage door 10 minutes after it is opened (IFTTT?) Posted: 23 Aug 2020 08:37 PM PDT I am pretty new to home automation. Trying to get MyQ to close the garage door automatically 10 minutes after it is opened. This does not appear possible directly in the app. Is there an easy way to do this with IFTTT? Or using some other services? [link] [comments]
Posted: 23 Aug 2020 12:40 PM PDT Hello, what robot vaccum would you recommend for max 250$. Im looking for a somewhat "smart" vaccum. My parents have one but its just bounces from wall to wall... so I would like one with a Camera or laser... So far I found these two: Deebot 901 and Xiaomi 1C (or "Essensial"). Thank you in advance! Lighting Control - Lutron, Vantage, X10, or Insteon Posted: 23 Aug 2020 07:35 PM PDT Hi all, I'm doing a complete interior remodel, and considering having a lighting system put in, as I decided against a whole home control system. (Control4, Loxone, Crestron, Savant). I want a system that will work with whatever HA system I may implement in the future, so now I'm left with these few options.
I know Lutron has been the dominant player, and one of the more reliable ones, but I remember Vantage used to be a major player in the lighting scene as well. I've had X10 in one of my homes before, but that was decades ago and I don't know if my experience is still relevant. Has anyone else had experience with X10 in today's world? The reason I chose to exclude generic "smart" switches is because I want to be able to have in wall keypads and such around the home. If anyone has other brands/systems please let me know. Thanks so much! [link] [comments]
Best option for window/door security sensors with 3rd party monitoring? Posted: 23 Aug 2020 07:31 PM PDT Moving to a new house and was thinking of getting a ring system for their door/motion sensors and control panel. Later, I will be getting a separate POE camera system instead of using ring cameras, which I've heard aren't great. Is ring recommended for home security, barring their cameras, or should I look at other options? [link] [comments]
Uses for prewired cat5e in home Posted: 23 Aug 2020 02:01 PM PDT Hello, I recently purchased a home that was built in 2004. The home has a "Leviton integrated networks home system" panel box in the garage and I wired for cat5e. I have a wall box in the entry way with 1 cat5e cable in it, as well as 4 ceiling boxes with cat5e in them. These 4 boxes are in each of the three bedrooms and the the living room. I am at a loss for what to do with these prewired boxes. I believe some homes had a intercom system that was wired in these places. I have heard of neighbors doing sound systems through this as well. Does anyone have any other suggestions? My heart isn't set on anything in particular and I am open to ideas! My modem and router are in a different room but I could move them to this box if that helps anything. TIA [link] [comments]
I was told it's a waste of time to buy a smart ceiling fan and to make a dumb one, smart. Posted: 23 Aug 2020 05:09 PM PDT What's the best way to do either? Why is one better than the other in your opinion? Is it true it's better to buy a dumb one? [link] [comments]
What's your coolest/most useful/favorite hone automation feature? Posted: 23 Aug 2020 10:30 AM PDT Looking for ideas for some home automation. I have a Google home mini, a smart bulb, and a smart outlet and am looking for ideas on cool things to do around the house. [link] [comments]
Posted: 23 Aug 2020 12:39 PM PDT So, one of my fans has a single speed button remote. Hi Med Low Off. Bond can handle it, but every so often, when I change the speed from Med or Low to High, it seems to turn if off, wait (some times up to a minute) then turn it to high. Other times it happens almost immediately. Just an odd quirk, but I was wondering anyone else has experienced it? [link] [comments]

Shift patterns and automation schedules Posted: 23 Aug 2020 01:04 PM PDT I have a Wiser system for heating/thermostatic valve control, and various smart bulbs. I would ideally like to use automation to exploit the fact that I know my shift pattern (mixture of days/nights) a few months in advance, so I can set up heating, outdoor lights, wake up lights etc. Before I go down the rabbit hole of figuring out a way to do this, has anyone done this before? If so, could you give me some tips? Cheers! [link] [comments]
Garage Door Left Open Automation (Have MyQ, Smartthings) Posted: 23 Aug 2020 12:32 PM PDT I am looking for a more effective notification for when our garage door is left open for xx (~15) min. I have:
MyQ has built-in notifications, but these just either display a phone notification or email. I would like a more urgent or louder notification for this. Ideally, either a phone call, or a custom (loud!) notification sound. I would think I could somehow do a custom notification with my gmail email, but can't figure out how. Also, I see IFTTT recipes, but none that do what I want to do. I also do have a tilt sensor that works with Smartthings, but not automation routines other than open or close. As a one-time programmer, you would think I could store the time it is opened and set a variable to Open. Then after 15 min, check if it is closed... etc. I bought the MyQ, and is very good for the price! I don't want to add any additional hardware of automation platform. Any advise is much appreciated. Also.. .as a Bonus question for those that are familiar with MyQ. Does anyone know if there is a way to know how an open or close was triggered (from the app, or from an opener)? This would be useful to troubleshoot when the door mysteriously opens. [link] [comments]
RGB LED strip: recommended brand(s)? Posted: 23 Aug 2020 05:54 AM PDT Hi folks, I am finishing my basement and between my bar, recreation room, stairs I have about 250 ft. worth of LED strip lighting that I wish to have. Would like to have it to be spliced, RGB, and that I can control via SmartThings. The sections are mostly rectangles (ceilings) and under-cabinet for bar and wine rack. I may not like it but I guess an on/off and color controller for each section? Amazon has a dizzying array of vendors. Any favorite in this sub? I was looking at Armacost which is a MD based vendor and sold at HomeDepot. But looks a bit expensive. https://www.armacostlighting.com/ Any things to watch out for during installation? I have a general contractor so any pro-tips to him? [link] [comments]
Two fans on one wireless controller Posted: 23 Aug 2020 10:14 AM PDT Has anyone had success connecting two fans to a single wireless fan controller? I am looking to control two fans in the same room with one wireless remote and one wall switch. My thought was I could install a controller above the first fan and connect it to both fans by running wires to the second fan from the controller. For reference I'm looking to use the Inovelli Red Series Fan + Light Switch. I have it installed in another room (single fan) and really like it. I know some controllers allow you to select channels so that you can control multiple fans and controller with a single switch. This particular system doesn't have a channel select feature. Any thoughts on this? [link] [comments]

Posted: 23 Aug 2020 08:07 AM PDT Moved into a new home with my in laws. My family is renting the basement. The audio for downstairs is at 0% so any music doesn't play, but every time the front or back door is opened it makes an announcement that the door is open. How do I turn that off for the basement? Requesting help choosing the right contactor/relay Posted: 23 Aug 2020 08:07 AM PDT This is for an ozone generator that I'm adding to my hot tub. Just to share the issue, I need the 120-240v (.5amp) ozone generator which is essentially a UV light bulb to turn on at the same time as my low speed 240v (12/4.4amp) pump which cycles on and off for 2-6 hours per day, no set schedule since it depends on when the water needs heating. It seems so easy since I essentially just need a switch/relay/contactor to connect the power to the ozone when it notices the low speed pump turn on. The pump has 2 speeds and 4 wires to it (ground, neutral, black hot and red hot). Using my volt meter it appears the black supplies 240 volts during low speed and the red 240 during high speed. I only need the ozone to run during low speed (but ok during high speed too I don't care), it just needs to turn off when the pump is off. Since the ozone can run off 240v I tried just splicing it into the same wiring that powers the pump but the panel seems to know and immediately trips the 50amp breaker going to the entire tub. I have a feeling I'm wiring it wrong since I'm not familiar with 240 volts. I think there is something about the wires reversing so I have a feeling by wiring it this way I am causing a short or something. Anyway, what I am thinking is just using a contactor which would switch the ozone on when the 240v current goes to the pump. Maybe you guys can recommend a simpler way or possibly the correct contactor? I have had trouble finding one with a 240v coil to connect the 120v ozone to power [link] [comments]
Multiple Aqara temperature and humidity sensors with RPi Posted: 23 Aug 2020 03:55 AM PDT Hi there, I'm pretty much new to home automation and I'm looking for a solution to pair multiple Aqara sensors with a raspberry pi. So far I was thinking about using OpenHAB but I haven't decided yet. My goal is to not rely on a single protocol or supplier and be flexible, this is why I wanted to use an open source solution to connect those actors and components together. Aqara hub is not the way I'd like to go. I've read several forum posts about troubles while trying to integrate the Aqara sensors reliably into such a system. Some described that they only worked when pressing the button on the sensor or only one sensors could be connected, more would mess up everything as Aqara doesn't fully comply with the Zigbee standard. I found several approaches to get the Aqara sensors to work (DEconZ, Zigbee2mqtt) but not a hint which one works really reliable. Is there anyone who managed to get this done and has several Aqara temperature sensors running reliably? Which approach did you use? Are there any better sensors which are likewise small and are easy to integrate? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]
Controlling lamps when the ceiling fan is on? Posted: 23 Aug 2020 03:26 AM PDT The lamps all have access to power but I would like them to be turned on/off when the ceiling fan has power (it's on a 3 way switch). Ideally I would attach a 'controller' to the ceiling fan and 'receivers' where i plug in each lamp.. but i have no idea where to start. No wifi/smart tech just power relays triggered by some sort of low range signal (??) [link] [comments]
E12 Smart Bulbs - Sengled / Tuya for Halloween/Xmas? Posted: 23 Aug 2020 02:25 AM PDT I'd like to find some E12 bulbs for outdoors for the holidays. So far it looks like there are 4 options - Hue , Sengled, Lifx, and Tuya bulbs. The Hue and Lifx bulbs are both too expensive for a holiday project. Wondering if anyone has any experience with Tuya bulbs? The price is great and I've got existing Tuya integration with Home Assistant and haven't had any issues. It would be great if I could get the bulbs to flicker (orange flicker seems nice for Halloween). Looks like total cost is around 90-100 for my 9 bulbs. The other option is the Sengled E12 bulbs. They are a little less than half price of the Lifx and Hue bulbs - I'd connect to a standard Zigbee hub I'd hope. With sengied looks like total cost would be around 200 for the 9 bulbs. Zigbee would likely be better than Tuya Wifi for connectivity. [link] [comments] |
