    Your perfect system from 0

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 11:24 AM PDT

I am in the process of purchasing a new home and would be starting a new home automation system from nothing. I am curious what everyones perfect from 0 setup would be assuming you had a substantial amount of money to spend on it.

Attempting my first DIY Camera System

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 02:43 PM PDT

I'm a first timer to security camera systems but I want to make one on my own for my father in law's car shop, since honestly hiring someone is mighty expensive, so we just need 2-3 cameras , I was looking at these:

    https://www.amazon.com/Reolink-Security-Assistant-Detection-Waterproof/dp/B08G89XK4S

And I know I need some sort of PoE switch, so I was thinking about this one:

    https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Compliant-Shielded-Optimization-TL-SG1005P/dp/B076HZFY3F?th=1

Now my question is, would I just be able to connect a computer (or maybe raspberry pi) to the switch and somehow access the IPs assigned to those cameras and be able to record or possibly even livestream? Or am I missing something.

Any other parts you would recommend instead of these? We only need 2 or 3 cameras, that's why I got such a small switch

    Thanks for the help!

    Best/similar LED light strips?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 06:23 PM PDT

I recently bought the Govee H61261D1 light strips for their chase/cross/rainbow/segmented/32ft/etc features but they're unfortunately not compatible with IFTTT, Smartthings... literally nothing as they only interact with Bluetooth via the Govee app. Anyways, are there any light strips like this one but that are compatible with Smartthings, IFTTT with the same features???

Buying house with Amp Smart system

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 08:57 PM PDT

I'm purchasing a new home and the sellers have Amp Smart security equipment. Specifically, a central control panel, Yale keyless smart lock on front door, and garage door controller. I do not think there are any other sensors or equipment, but can't say for certain. The doorbell is a Skybell and not connected to this system. The thermostat didn't seem to be part of the system either, but again I'm not certain.

I do not want a contract with this security provider. Do I have the seller leave everything as is and I reset things to use through a different smart home hub? Do I have them change out the smart lock for a traditional deadbolt and then buy my own smart lock after I move in? Any advice on how to go about this? The sellers seem to be under the impression that if I don't have the service transferred to me and take on the -$70/month fee, the equipment won't work. I don't know if that is true, but I'm not about to sign up for a service that costs that much when I know smart home setups can be done without it.

The extent of my home automation experience is Google home devices and Chromecast, so I'm a complete beginner at setting this up.

    Thanks for any help.

Most reasonable way to have tv swing out 30degrees when turning on?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 05:09 PM PDT

Trying to think of a affordable/simple way for a tv to pivot about one of its short sides by about 30 degrees when the tv is powered on. Anyone know of an existing turn key package that isn't $1000 or a decent diy setup I could do without a PhD in CS?

    Thanks!!

Is there a google assistant compatible amplifier to connect speaker wires to?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 09:26 AM PDT

I bought ceiling speakers, a bluetooth amplifier, and a google mini, hooked it all up, and it sortof worked, but it's tedious enough that we never use it, the problem is what i want to do is say "play song on ceiling speaker" but what i have to do instead is turn on amp (it draws 11 watts when on and not in use, lame), push the input button 3 times to switch it to bluetooth mode, wait 30 seconds for it to pair with google mini, THEN say to play my song... and 90% of the time, the pairing fails and has to be retried a bunch of times too.

So I returned the amplifier, and now i want to buy some theoretical wifi enabled amplifier or something, if that exists? or just a google mini equivalent with a speaker wire input? similar to amazon echo, but we use google assistant, nto amazon (we have 7 google spekears all thruout the house ha)

Easiest way to make a simple intercom smart?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 07:00 PM PDT

Easiest way to make a simple intercom smart?

I am new to home automation (but have a lot of basic background knowledge in Linux, running my own servers, networks, PhD in EE, wireless and protocols ...). In the long run I would like to use HomeAssistant as a hub.

However, in the short-term I am looking to control my intercom and doorlock via my cellphone so I don't have to get out my keys.

My intercom seems super simple: When bridging the metal contact SW1 the door opens. So it's really just a matter to bridge that contact.

    my intercom

What is the easiest way to do this so I can control this immideately using my own setup while later integrating it in Home Assistant? The most important part for the short run is activating the door lock via SW1 but in the long run it would of course be great to have access to doorbell and intercom phone as well.

Now I would be tempted to take an Esp8266-style device like the NodeMCU and just use a relay/optocoupler to connect SW1. However, what prevents me doing this most is that it's not straight forward: Apart from NodeMCU, I need the relay/coupler and it would not be easy to integrate the doorbell/intercom. Also NodeMCU draws a lot of power and ideally I would like to avoid a separate power cord. Drawing power from the intercom would be OK but this gets a small project with lot of work. Battery would be fine but NodeMCU draws much power and the whole system would become too bulky to hide it unter the cover.

All in all, I am wondering if there are solutions out there that fir my system already?

Shelly-1 - Can I use this to turn the wall switch into a toggle?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 05:12 PM PDT

I want to control/automate my outside light, but I also need to have the light controlled on a switch for the partner-factor. If I wire the Shelly-1 into the switch, does toggle mode really just make the switch act like a 3-way switch? Thanks!

I'm looking for the holy grail of smart doorbells: RTSP, 2-way intercom, POE, no subscription

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 01:08 PM PDT

I've been doing a ton of research and can't seem to find anything that matches all of the above.

Ideally, I could integrate the button portion of the doorbell with Homeassistant as well, but not a hard requirement.

Does this thing exist? The closest I've found so far is the Amcrest doorbell, but it doesn't check all the boxes.

Automated dog door cover motor ideas?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 12:56 PM PDT

I have two dog doors, one in a screen door that goes from outside to a covered patio and a weather resistant one built into a low window from the covered patio to the house.

They worked pretty well... until last night.

We had the bat in the house.

Now I can't say it came in from the dog doors, I'm paranoid and don't want to risk it.

The door going into the house has a slide in plastic panel cover.

Is there a way I can motorize that cover to open with the dog tags?

Same with the screen, if I can find a way to mount a cover to it?

I do have a raspberry pi set up with home assistance and a z wave USB adapter if those help.

I can supply pics if necessary.

From KettleBot to any Bot - adding SwitchBots anywhere - what else would you automate?

From KettleBot to any Bot - adding SwitchBots anywhere - what else would you automate?

    KettleBot v2.0 - don't ask about what happened with v.10 :D

    Hi all

I got my hands on SwitchBot kit and I'm currently trying to come up with most entertaining automation ideas. The SwitchBot isn't perfect, but it way too much fun to use!

As you can see I've made a KettleBot add on to remotely heat up the water in the kettle (because why not!) - if you want to know more about what can you do with it - it's here:

    https://notenoughtech.com/review/from-kettlebot-to-any-bot-switchbot/

Let me know what else would you use it for!

    Battery operated lighting

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 08:36 AM PDT

I've got a display cabinet I'd like to put some lighting in. I can't realistically run power to it, so I'm wondering if there's any battery powered strip or cabinet like down lighting I can fit that's either controllable through Alexa or some other means?

I have a IR blaster aswell if that could work.

Control LIFX lamps from Caseta switch?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 02:49 PM PDT

I recently upgraded to Lutron Caseta (non-pro) for all the light switches in my home. My dining room built-ins, however, are fairly weak - the bulbs are more decorative than functional. I like the look, though, so I compensate with strategically placed lamps that currently have LIFX bulbs; however, these are not controlled by the switch.

I do currently have an Alexa set up so I can say "turn on the dining room" and everything turns on. What I'm looking for is a way to set up automation so that when I press the Caseta switch, it also sends a signal to turn on the LIFX bulbs, so I can turn everything on that way too. I've looked at IFTTT but it doesn't look like Caseta can be used as a trigger with the default functionality there.

    Any recommendations appreciated!

Sudden issue with Lutron Caseta dimmers

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 07:38 AM PDT

I've had a handful of these switches installed for about 2 years now, and all of a sudden two of them are having the same issue, in different rooms, with different bulbs, on different breakers. The bulbs between the two fixtures are different brands, but both are dimmable LEDs. Other switches on the same breakers work fine.

If I turn the light on, the dimmer indicators on the switch start to move up as expected, but the lights don't turn on. Then when the switch reaches about the 5th (out of 7) indicator light, the lights flash for a split second at full brightness and turn off, and the switch indicator lights also turn off.

If I keep trying to turn it on over and over again, it will eventually turn on.

Single light with multiple dumb switches

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 07:14 AM PDT

I have a couple of ceiling lights in my home that are connected to multiple, dumb, switches.
Is there anything to automate/remote control the light while maintaining the functionality of the switches without having to replace them all with smart switches?
Usually there are just 2 switches, but some lights have even 3 switches.
