    getting rid of cats

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 08:45 AM PDT

We ran out of all ideas to get rid of cat poop from our front yard. I was told an actual sprinkler would deter them but I dont want the sprinkler going off when humans are in the yard. Are we at the point where a camera can detect a cat and set the sprinkler off for a few seconds? Im using HA and dont think it would be hard to create the automation.

Has anyone installed and integrated smart window tint into their home automation setup?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 11:02 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I have a few glass doors and I really hate having curtains on them. Has anyone used the smart tinting technology for their windows/doors?

If so, what is your experience?

    Thanks

The xiaomi smart lock, how secure it is?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 11:50 PM PDT

I'm looking at getting a couple xiaomi smart locks, they are a little expensive at $300 but if the security is good i'm up for it.

So, how secure they are against breaking in compared to normal, not-smart locks where you just use a key?

A unified Zigbee plugin based on zigpy is in development for Domoticz

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 11:31 PM PDT

FYI, a developer of the ZiGate plugin for Domoticz home automation software has recently started working on a new unified Zigbee plugin for Domoticz as a proof-of-concept.

    https://github.com/pipiche38/Domoticz-Zigpy

This new plugin is based on the zigpy python library which means that it has the potential to support many Zigbee coordinator hardware adapters from different manufacturers through radio libraries for zigpy.

    https://github.com/zigpy/zigpy

Discussion with the idea and concept started as a feature request:

    https://www.domoticz.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=29101&p=254498

This is the same concept and python libraries that the ZHA integration component for Home Assistant is based on the project for Domoticz passes POC stage then it will share the same code upstream in zigpy.

    https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/zha/

If this Zigpy plugin for Domoticz comes fruition then the fact it is using the same python libraries will benefit both all software as bug-fixes and new features are merged into the upstream zigpy libraries.

HomeKit compatible smoke /carbon for OMNIPRO II

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 06:27 PM PDT

Need new Omnipro II compatible Smoke detectors with HomeKit support

I have an original HAI LEVITON OMNIPRO II installation With wired smoke detectors. I recently realized that those smoke detectors I've been up on my ceiling for 15+ years and I assume need to be replaced. They activate the fire alarm on the OmniPro II And I want to continue with that functionality. However the OmniPro system has been discontinued So there's no way to get new smoke / carbon dioxide detectors. I am now a HomeKit user and would love to get HomeKit compatible smoke and carbon dioxide detectors and connect them to the same wired outlets of the Omnipro II detectors.

Has anyone done this? Can firstalert onelink smoke detectors use the same wiring and activate my alarm? If not is there another solution that will work? Looking for advice.

    Best Temp/Humidity Sensor

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 04:12 PM PDT

So I did peruse the topics in order to not duplicate, but after about ten or so I didn't get the exact answer I am looking for.

I use Google Home and have connections through TP-Link (Kasa), Smart Life, SmartThings, and some random GE HQ app for the AC.

My goal is to not have to install another application and be able to integrate the sensors through one of the aforementioned.

Need: 3 or 4 sensors for internal use that can measure temperature and humidity (humidity is a severe problem in my home) that I can quickly check at any moments notice (even away from home if possible).

I see tons of low cost sensors in the 10 dollar range, but most listings are not clear if another hub is needed and reviews are mostly devoid of the word "google." I am looking for 3 or 4 sensors that I can easily say "Hey Google, what is the humidity (or temperature) in my home" and get told the levels. I do not need anything that will automatically set my AC to adjust, but I wouldn't be opposed to it at a slight premium.

    Thanks in advance!

Lutron caseta dimmer switch compatible floor/torchiere light

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 09:36 PM PDT

Looking for a bright up light I can dim with the lite on caseta switch. Something like this. https://www.amazon.com/s?k=lutron+torchiere+lamp&ref=nb_sb_noss

Sadly most options are like this have a built in dimmer which makes it a big go with the dimmer switch.

Wifi Smart Switch...no neutral, no capacitor?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 02:43 AM PDT

Hi, just for background, I am based in the UK.

I came across these wifi smart switches. I emailed to enquire and they have confirmed that these switches don't need a neutral, nor a capacitor in the ceiling rose.

    https://www.moeshouse.com/products/wifi-smart-light-switch-push-button-2-way-multi-control-1-gang-eu-uk-version-with-no-neutral-wire?_pos=6&_sid=2cdde3490&_ss=r

I'm still relatively new to all this so apologies if this is a common sense question, but is this too good to be true?

What are your tips for designing a robot-vacuum friendly house?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 05:26 PM PDT

I'm looking for ideas and gotchas regarding designing a house to best work with robot vacuums.

For example, we are considering hiding a Roomba in a closet with a slot for the Roomba to go through so it can dock, charge, and empty it's bin. I am unsure what is reasonable to do, and what simply will not work.

    Any tips, ideas, or resources?

    Deadlock smart lock without Cloud?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 08:37 AM PDT

    Deadlock smart lock without Cloud?

I have an apartment door with a deadlock.

I found a couple of ways to to transform such locks into a "SmartLock" by adding a mechanical system that rotates the deadlock ... no replacement requires, just glueing this box on the inner side of the door.

    Examples seem to be:

    However, they all force cloud.

Does anyone know of a solution that does not rely on cloud and works with a private system (Linux, raspi, MQTT etc)?

    My deadlock:

GoSund switch was installed 2 years ago. Worked great ever since. For some reason the button doesn't want to work. Wife uses it instead of Alexa. But it does work with apps and Alexa. The lights will sometimes turn off with a 5-6 second delay. Ol nothing changed. Why doesn't the physical button work

Dimmer switch that saves dimming level and compatible with HomeKit

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 06:40 AM PDT

I'm looking for a dimmer switch that is compatible with HomeKit and can save the dimming level (light will turn on at 80% if set to). Lutron Caseta can't do this. C by GE looked promising but HomeKit compatibility is listed as "coming soon"...

    Thanks for recommendations.

Is it possible to use an Android phone as my HassOS server?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 06:21 PM PDT

I was wondering if it would be possible to run a VM in an Android phone that runs HassOS. I have a few old Android phones in a desk drawer somewhere and would prefer to use one of those over buying a Raspberry Pi or using running a VM on a PC that I use every day.

Battery powered wifi or zigbee button that works with smart life?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 03:19 PM PDT

Looking for a battery powered switch or button to use as a trigger on smart life. Something like Flic or Aqara mini switch are perfect, but they don't integrate natively with smart life (as far as I know) and I would need to use IFTTT. I don't want to do that because of the several second delay.

I don't mind it so much but I'm really trying to sell my girlfriend on home automation and she won't be too pleased if she has to wait 5 seconds for the lights to turn on when she walks into the bedroom.

I know that Smart Life is pretty good about detecting things that aren't necessarily designed for it but I don't want to but something on a hope and prayer that it'll work.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Deck Pot Lights

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 03:02 PM PDT

**links to what I had purchased below thread

Ideas for dimmable deck pot lights? They all seem to come with daisy chaining cable and a transformer. I purchased a Teckin Outdoor dimmer but unfortunately, it won't work because dimmers have to be inline (I learned this after purchasing). The only things available for diming are those crude RF controllers with the cheap remotes. Hoping to get around all of it by just finding LED lights that don't require a transformer. Maybe I'm misunderstanding something but Christmas lights get by fine without a transformer, why do pot lights need them? Looking for something recessed as I want the lights to be as discreet as possible (Drilling into the deck). The solution also needs to be robust. I don't want dangling lights because they won't last 365 in Canadian weather and frankly I don't like the look. Thoughts/Ideas?

I found an old laptop, want to convert it to Nas, how do I connect HDDs to it?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 04:39 AM PDT

    Hey people,

I found an old laptop I used over 5 years ago. Elitebook HP 8740w, it has an i5-m540 CPU and 8GB of ram.

It has a LAN cable slot that I'd use to connect to my network. It has an eSata port on the side, and 2 SS usb ports which I think should be usb 3.0. It has 2x USB 2.0 too but I'd never even dare to use USB 2.0 nowadays.

I can connect 3 external HDDs to it. But what if I want to connect more? Usb hub? Would I have problems mounting the HDD in my OMV ?

And what about connecting a disk bay to it? Wouldn't the performance suffer if I'd use 1 usb 3.0 to a disk bay with 4 HDDs ? I wouldn't use more than 1 HDD at a time anyway, at least not on full speed. I'm just wondering if there is a better way to do that.

Also, does anyone know at what energy costs I'm looking at just with the laptop running 24/7?

    Multiple proximity triggered smart locks?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 02:09 PM PDT

I was all set to get three of the Yale Assure by August smart locks, and then I found out you can only have one lock per house set up so that when you come close with your Bluetooth phone it unlocks. I had no idea about this limitation so now I'm starting over my search.

Are there any out there that have this working for multiple locks? I don't care if just one unlocks or they all do.

Remote access for apartment building door

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 01:24 PM PDT

Remote access for apartment building door

I'm looking for a way to remotely activate the door buzzer to my apartment building. Not very electrically inclinded, and not looking to completely take apart the intercom system.

I was thinking something along the lines of a physical button depresser to attach to the intercom to unlock the door.

I frequently miss packages from UPS/Fedex because they have no building access, and it would also simplify a quick trip out to my car if I forgot something in it.

The intercom is old, and just has 3 buttons. I was thinking I could get/make soemthing that could attach to the slats and the bottom of the unit to hold position, and then something with bluetooth or wifi I could access to depress the door button.

Any suggestions would be great, as would ideas for a better solution.
