Shelly Plug US - good product, shitty documentation Posted: 02 Sep 2020 04:55 PM PDT Vent warning. Happy enough with the Shelly 1 relays I installed in wall receptacles around the house, I bought a few Shelly Plus US devices. They (eventually) work fine, and for $11 they cost less than a Shelly 1 ($15) and have more features than it, also including a power meter. Overall, I'm happy with them. The annoying thing is the tiny booklet included in the box. It's poorly written: it spends most of its pages explaining how to use the phone app, which is very self-explanatory, and dedicates almost no space to how to set up the device. But that's not my #1 complaint... The problem is that its information is wrong. It will mislead you into being unable to access the plug. It says that you press the device button to toggle mode till you are in AP mode, signalled by a flashing red/blue LED light. That's unfortunately just wrong. I don't know what mode corresponds to the flashing red/blue light, but you WON'T be able to join the plug's wi-fi network while the plug is in that mode. To join the plug's wi-fi and configure it, you MUST do so while the plug is in the "blinking blue LED" mode, whatever it is, and that's the mode the devices I bought enter when plugged in for the first time. Short story, plug it in, and access its wi-fi, without pressing its button any time. [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Sep 2020 11:10 PM PDT Hi, happy to just have found this community! I am building a house in some weeks , its a 2 storey house width roughley 170 square meters of space. I want to automate most things and need some tips. I have some google nest minis and would like things to integrate nice with them. So what are some must haves for an automated home? Anything i need to think about before I start building? [link] [comments]
First LED Project - Solderless Power Injectors / Review My List? Posted: 02 Sep 2020 05:40 AM PDT I am new to LED's and somewhat overwhelmed by it. My list of what I am buying for one of my setups is below but my main question is how to inject power along a 44' run without having to solder. I am buying 24v strips and I definitely don't think power just at the beginning and the end of the run will be enough. I am thinking about buying these connectors and then doing quick splice taps on the power wire. Thoughts? is there another way to do this without dealing with soldering connections? Purchase list - I know the LED's are 12mm and will buy items below that are the correct size. Just examples Also will purchase weatherproof versions of the connectors or properly protect them. What am I forgetting? [link] [comments]
Looking for a smart brightness sensor with high "aperture" (very good for low light) Posted: 02 Sep 2020 09:41 PM PDT A lot of sensors show 0 lux when there's still a bit of light in the room so I'm looking for something better Hope I don't have to go for a diy solution because that's basically the first promising thing I saw when I attempted to google for it [link] [comments]
Has anyone successfully migrated Lightify/OSRAM lights to a Sonoff ZB bridge? Posted: 02 Sep 2020 04:09 PM PDT I have seen conflicting reports about OSRAM lights' compatibility with Zigbee 3.0 bridges (the Sonoff one is 3.0.) It would be nice to only have to spend $17 setting my lights up again, instead of having to get a Samsung thing. And no, I don't want to go the RPi route if at all possible; too much faff and I haven't had great luck with SD cards suddenly failing. [link] [comments]
Help us design some architectural ZigBee lights! Posted: 02 Sep 2020 07:40 PM PDT Hi everyone! I was wondering if you could help us (Sowilo DS) out by answering a few questions to determine some of the design parameters of new ZigBee lights/LED strips for use with Hue or other ZigBee gateways. We generally cater to the professional market, but want to be sure our products are accessible to homeowners that are Hue/automation enthusiasts too! [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Sep 2020 09:51 AM PDT First post here so bare with me. I'm looking to purchase a camera system for my home. 6 camera (2 of them 4K) spots and one for the front door. I want to have it hardwired to the house incase my WiFi becomes compromised Battery back up (hard wired for electricity) Access from my smart phone Between 14-30day back up. I've done a little research. Arlo cameras look tight. Should I install myself or with an outside company to ensure proper setup? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]

Posted: 02 Sep 2020 05:15 PM PDT Looking into a Ring. The Gen 2 is $79 and the 3 is $149. I don't see much difference other than added 5ghz WiFi Does anyone know why I would spend an extra $70 for the 3 when the gen 2 seems the same? [link] [comments]

Posted: 02 Sep 2020 01:02 PM PDT My mum finds it hard to even use the Dyson cordless stuff these days, so was wondering how a two in one robot vacuum would fare in the kitchen ie: so it picks up dirt and mops as well Does anyone know what's best? The Roborock S6? Something else? [link] [comments]
Need help, my first try in home automation Posted: 02 Sep 2020 09:18 AM PDT Hello everyone! So I'm trying my first steps in Home automation. Got an echo dot 3 an a broadlink rm4 pro. Goal: I say "activate gaming mode" and the leds around the room turn blue, the tv turns on in hdmi3 and the ps4 turns on. The problem: i can only turn the tv to hdmi 3 if i input multiple things using a scene, like pressing the "input" button, then the "down" button 3 times, then the "ok" button. I read that you can get custom IR codes for inputs like hdmi3 directly, and I even found a website with the codes. But I have no idea how to use them. I can't find a place on the app to input them and broalink manager on pc can't find my device. What am i missing? TL;DR: how to input custom IR codes on Broadlink RM4 Pro? [link] [comments]
Controlling Apple TV with Alexa Posted: 02 Sep 2020 09:03 AM PDT So I'm starting to add a lot of automation elements to my college apartment (Smart bulbs, alexa, harmony hub - to name a few I have so far) and one problem I've been having is with being able to automatically control my AppleTV via routines in my Alexa app for routines such as a "good night" routine where all my lights turn off as well as my AppleTV (The AppleTV is toggled via the Harmony Skill). It kinda works, the problem is that for some reason the AppleTV turns off after about 20 seconds and then gets stuck in a loop where it endlessly turns on and off. I figured it kinda difficult getting Alexa and Apple to work together nicely, but I want to see what other people have figured out. [link] [comments]
Looking for a zigbee light that runs in batteries Posted: 02 Sep 2020 08:38 AM PDT I'm sure this has been posted before but I can't find anything because reddit search bad. I've got a hall closet that has no lights or outlets. I've got a door sensor that's begging to be used and want to hook up an automation in home assistant to turn on a battery powered light when the door opens. Are there any decent battery powered lights out there that work with Zigbee, (or wifi if I have to but prefer Zigbee)? [link] [comments]
Handheld scene controller remote? Posted: 02 Sep 2020 08:32 AM PDT Hey, all. Does anyone know of a good Z-Wave, Zigbee, or similar handheld remote with a few buttons? I love the scene controller options of things like my Inovelli wall switches (things like "tap the down button twice to trigger scene X"), and I wish I had something similar that was battery-powered. I'm also sad that putting a Z-Wave fan controller on my ceiling fans means that I'll lose the ability to use the remote that currently controls the fans, which is nice for guests to use. Looking for something compatible with a range of platforms (SmartThings, Hubitat, etc). Hoping for something nice-looking and with 2-5 buttons, not overwhelming. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Sleep Cycle App - Sengled Integration Posted: 02 Sep 2020 08:28 AM PDT Hey all, Quick question regarding the Sleep Cycle app on iOS devices. I have a Sengled hub with three color changing bulbs connected in my bedroom. I use the Sleep Cycle app on my Apple Watch for my alarm in the morning, and I noticed that the app has Philips Hue integration for the alarm. Has anyone successfully used their Sengled bulbs with this app? [link] [comments]
Need help determining what to buy for light automation, in a mostly 3-wire switch house Posted: 02 Sep 2020 08:04 AM PDT Just bought a house recently and I'd estimate 75% of the switches don't have a neutral. The master bedroom and master bath have newer wiring and do have a neutral. I bought a multipack of Kasa smart paddle switches for the master bed/bath, but I'm wondering what I need to do for the rest of the house in order to control the lights? I bought and installed a C by GE 3-wire smart paddle switch in place of one of the 3-wire switches, but those switches aren't cost effective ($50 a pop unless I find a deal) and I need a lot of them. As I understand it, if I replace the existing LED bulbs with smart bulbs then I have to keep the switches in the ON position or I lose the automation? Is there a better way to control 3-wire switches instead of replacing each one with the expensive GE smart switches? My plan is to run HA off a RPi 4 to control everything in the house, if that helps with your response. I also have a Deco M9 Mesh Router which supposedly acts as a Zigbee Hub and have a Hue Bridge too, but haven't plugged the Hue in yet. [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Sep 2020 07:30 PM PDT A few of my friends have founded a company and their first product is aimed at improving your control over smart speakers (specifically Amazon Echo to start). I've really enjoyed my experiences with the device so far and wanted to share my experiences… as well as plug their Kickstarter that launched today. :) The product is called BuzzOff and currently targets Amazon Echo devices. Between an Alexa Skill and a mobile app, you can cut power to your Echo for a period of time. The goal here being to tell Alexa to "go away" and give you privacy for a certain amount of time. Personally for me it's been really useful for working from home. My company has an Alexa skill and whenever I'm on a conference call talking about the app, my device would trigger unless I remembered to go mute it. This makes life easy when jumping on quick calls. I've also used it in our bedroom to give some privacy in the times we don't really care for our Echo to be listening in. ;) Honestly, I've only been using it for a little while, and I'm not as privacy concerned as others I know (I mean if I was, I probably wouldn't have a ton of Amazon Echos around my house), but it is really nice to be able to quickly control if the device is listening in for moments of privacy or when it would just be annoying. You plug your Echo power into BuzzOff, set your Echo on top, and connect BuzzOff to the Echo. It's a small little package without any extra power cables required. I highly recommend it as a user, and also want to support my friends. If you're interested, please check out their Kickstarter. For the record, beyond being friends that occasionally gets together to play board games (or used to pre-COVID), I'm not affiliated with the company in any way. I purchased a device from them and have been helping test it out in the weeks leading up to their Kickstarter launch. [link] [comments] |
