    Battery operated smart blind motor?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 03:11 PM PDT

This has been on my project list for sometime and it's bugging me that I can find a suitable option.

Anyone aware of either a WiFi or Zigbee rechargeable / battery operated roller blind motor?

Looking to expose this to Home-Assistant so that I can eventually expose to HomeKit.

The closest I found so far is the Zenismart Tuya WiFi motor https://www.zemismart.com/products/zemismart-tuya-wifi-motor-for-17mm-25mm-tube-built-in-battery

Sonoff mini - delay before turning the light on

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 03:02 PM PDT

    Hi,

I have several MINI devices I would like a small delay before they turn on using the rocket switch not the mobile app.

Similar when they turn off but I would have a bit larger delay if possible.

I haven't flashed them so I'm using ewelink app. I might flash them to tasmota at some point but not for the time being. Even though, would it be possible in tasmota?

    Any suggestion?

    AMD/x86 single-board computers?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 10:00 AM PDT

I tried to post this on /r/raspberry_pi but it was removed so this sub might be a better fit...

This may be slightly off-topic, but I was wondering if anybody has a recommendation for x86-based, RPi-like, single-board computers? I'm looking for low-cost (trying to keep it under $100).

The goal is to have it join a homelab Kubernetes cluster, so I can run Docker images that haven't been built for ARM. (I know I could re-build images myself, but I'm looking for a more out-of-the-box solution.)

    Thanks!

Looking for suggestions about a universal voice remote

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 01:15 PM PDT

I am trying to find a solution to control a cable box with a voice remote. I am trying to decide between adding more caavo units since I already have one or using a fire tv cube or fire tv stick with fire tv blaster as a cheaper solution for voice controlling cable boxes. I saw the logitech harmony express although it's now discontinued.

Top exterior gate smart lock options

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 03:14 PM PDT

Hey all! I have a control4 based system and am using the C4 branded YDR256s. I hate the ecosystem. Loved the August app and pissed I made the switch. I put up a new fence recently that has two gates. I'm having a hard time identifying a lock. The gate is a steel frame and has IPE wood in the middle. I haven't made any cuts in to the gate yet. I can basically put whatever I want in at this point.

I've seen some folks put the Yale locks with a weather proof waterproof cover over.

I'm open to any type of "bad ass" solution. I have the ability to run low voltage to the 4" steel post they the door swings to. I have PoE capabilities, WiFi, etc at both gates.

Was trying to find a nice video doorbell that might be able to relay a door unlocked all in the app. The Control4 intercom app sucks - so does their version of the mini doorbell from N2 (i think that's what it is).

    Any leads would be appreciated

Window Sensor + Air Pressure Switch = Radon Fan Monitor

Window Sensor + Air Pressure Switch = Radon Fan Monitor

So I got a radon mitigation system put in, to suck the poison gas out of my sump pit and blow it over towards Toledo. I had this idea that I'd like a radon fan monitor to warn me if it stopped working, since it is pretty quiet.

I took a spare GoControl (Linear / Nortek) z-wave window sensor, and I tried to get the external switch terminals working. Alas, Wink does not support them. I decided to sacrifice the sensor, and broke out the reed switch, using the reeds to solder lead wires to.

I attached the leads to an air pressure (diaphragm) switch that I got used off of eBay for $13. It is a diaphragm balanced against a return spring, connected to a switch. If there is more than about 0.25" WC pressure difference across the device, the switch closes. The air pressure switch plugs into a 1/4" ID air hose, which is inserted into a 3/8" hole in the exhaust pipe.

I programmed a robot in Wink to trigger when it sees the vacuum switch open for more than 10 minutes, and send me a notification.

Failure modes that I can see: if the air switch degrades and opens even though there is low pressure (good), I get false positives. Or, if the vacuum switch fails closed (moisture?) I won't get a notification if my fan does die. This is easily checked by unplugging the fan every so often.

    leads soldered on to reeds

The sensor mated to the switch

    Connected

    Smart bulbs without wifi

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 05:35 PM PDT

I'm interested in controlling lighting (a bulb or two) away from home, but I'm not interested in setting up a home wifi network - I have no broadband, router, Ethernet, only a laptop and a phone which is the source for all connections.

    Not feasible?

    Smart button ideas

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 08:18 PM PDT

I'm looking for a smart button to replace a wall switch. I don't need the switch to be wired to a light or fan, rather I want the switch to send a signal to my smart things hub that would signal a command. Smart things has a smart button. I'm looking for the same function except that it would replace a switch. Any ideas on a product?

    Smart Lock for doorknob?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 07:52 PM PDT

I want a smart lock (deadbolt and handle/doorknob) but all the ones at Home Depot have a long door handle, not a knob, and I believe I would need to make major renovations to my door to install one of those. Example: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Schlage-Camelot-Satin-Nickel-Connect-Smart-Lock-with-Alarm-and-Accent-Lever-Handleset-BE469ZP-V-CAM619-FE285-V-CAM-619-ACC/308670904

My current door's locks are like this: https://www.menards.com/main/hardware/door-locks/entry/schlage-reg-georgian-entry-door-knob-and-single-cylinder-deadbolt/fb50vgeo619/p-1444453602736.htm

I'm not sure what options I have. I've looked up videos on installing the Schlage smart locks but none of them mention handle size.

Tasmota AP Not Being Advertised on ESP8266-01

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 01:38 PM PDT

I'm using an Arduino as an FTDI programmer that has had its main chip removed so there shouldn't be any interference on the TX/RX end of things.

On the Windows 10 side of things I tried all 5 tools listed on the Tasmota site for flashing and none of them made it past the "Configuring Flash Size .... Flash size is X" stage.

So, eventually I got tired of messing with it and rebooted into a linux distro. That worked more effectively. I fired up Tasmotizer which I understand is just a wrapper for Esptool and I'm able to use it to successfully flash the chip

esptool.py v2.8 Serial port /dev/ttyACM0 Connecting.... Chip is ESP8266EX Features: WiFi Crystal is 26MHz MAC: 18:fe:34:a6:53:e6 Uploading stub... Running stub... Stub running... Configuring flash size... Erasing flash (this may take a while)... Chip erase completed successfully in 0.6s Compressed 609552 bytes to 429950... Wrote 609552 bytes (429950 compressed) at 0x00000000 in 37.3 seconds (effective 130.9 kbit/s)... File md5: 2f6e8f0071ddf2531e0c5352244b4e17 Flash md5: 56d889f578b2cb0e6ef6f95c3ed19c9e MD5 of 0xFF is 7c8810b63e02f5c501b12d8c3b8f8c66

At this point I disonnect GPIO 0 from GND, powercycle and then I wait .... and wait .... and I never see an AP pop up that is notated with "Tasmota_AP" or anything remotely similar to it. Like no access points pop up.

I've tried reflashing dozens of times, I've tried flashing two different ESP8266-01 and I've verified I'm in programming mode because when I don't GND out GPIO 0 Tasmotizer fails to connect.

After booting into the normal mode I've also tried to set the WIFI/MQTT settings directly through the "Send Config" option of the app and I've tried 2 different networks and I never see the device connect when monitoring my router's dashboard.

I've also tried pulling up the serial monitor directly and rebooting the device but all I get is garbled output regardless of if I use a standard Linux utility or the Arduino IDE so I have no way of getting extra info through that.

    Any advice?

Edit 1: I've also tried the 8.3, 8.4 and 8.4.x dev branch firmware all with the same result

Trying to find a zwave switch for an Attic fan

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 06:45 PM PDT

I have a Attic Fan that runs on a switch with no neutral wire. I'm assuming it dimmer switch route recommended for lights wouldn't work in this case. I was hoping there would be a way to power the switch using a battery but not finding options like that. Anyone know of a solution that could work, I'm still new to this so I'm hoping that there are ways to get it working that I'm over looking.

How to convert a single switch ceiling fan into a smart fan with independent light and fan controls?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 12:03 PM PDT

I'm looking for a way to smarten up my ceiling fans without tearing up the ceiling and wall running a second line from the fan to the switch box.

Currently I'm using Lutron switches on these ceiling fans with built in lights. Everything is fine as long as I don't change the fan setting. If I do the load on the line changes and the switch freaks out until I turn it off and on again.

I've considered putting a Lutron fan control switch, and a standard lutron light switch in the ceiling tied to the fan electrical and lighting electrical, then controlling both with Lutron remotes on the wall.

Is there a better solution? The closest I've come is something like the Zipato Z-Wave Micromodule Switch, but it doesn't do dimming so I wouldn't be able to remotely control the fan speed or change the brightness of the lights at all.

Has anyone seen a device or come up with another solution to accomplish this?

Wiring to windows - what does yours look like?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 08:14 AM PDT

I see people often recommending running cable to every window if you're doing a major renovation or new build, but what are the particulars of this? Where in the window do you have your cables exiting? And what type of cabling was used - would running cat6 suffice or is there a recommended easily available cable for this use case?

Suggestions for an inexpensive Android tablet to use as a dashboard/panel.

Can Smartthings Smart plugs be controlled both by Alexa and the harmony hub?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 06:54 AM PDT

I have a new harmony hub and despite a couple of wrinkles, I like it.

I also have an amazon echo dot. Connected those two right away, and can turn on my blue ray, receiver and projector with a command.

But I'd like my lights to dim with the same command. Something I cannot do through Alexa it seems.

And my current smart bulbs and plugs are not compatible with harmony.

So it seems the simplest solution is to get a smartplug that is compatible with both.

Samsung smarthing plugs seem to be. But I want to be sure there isn't going to be some weird problem where ONLY Alexa or ONLY The harmony hub can control them.

    Garage Door opener

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 08:41 AM PDT

    Good morning,

I am a newbie with Home Automation, and looking for a simple, inexpensive solution for my garage door. I have an older Liftmaster garage door opener, with a doorbell switch to open / close it. I'm assuming the easiest solution will be something like a relay connected to the doorbell switch.

I would love to have a solution to allow me to open and close it either by bluetooth or wifi. I do not want a solution that connects to offsite web services for control, and would not want google or alexa connectivity unless there are ways to lock it down. (I don't mind having Google Minis in the house, but don't want someone to be able to get into my garage by saying 'Ok Google...')

There seems to be a lot of solutions out there, and frankly its a bit overwhelming for a newbie. I'd love it if someone could point me in the right direction.

    Thanks for your help!
