Looking for top down bottom up cellular shade for a wide window

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 08:35 PM PDT

I'm looking to get some thoughts on getting a shade for my living room window. The window is 110 7/8" x 55 1/8".

Ideally I would like to find smart motorized top down bottom up cellular shade that is battery operated, with potential to hard wire in future, with a remote control and z-wave (I have Smart Things 3rd Gen hub right now).

Next option would be to just get a regular shade and use some type of smart motor on it.

Are there any options? If so, what ballpark cost are you looking at? With Hunter Douglas for example I can't seem to find prices online.

Looking For a Wireless Camera, Any Ideas?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 10:10 PM PDT

I've lost my cat after a house fire and I need a wireless camera I can set up on the porch where I left a box. I'm not sure if a camera like this exists but if one does let me know. There is no electrical in the house as it is basically needing to be rebuilt on the inside so the camera must be wireless and not take wifi. I would like it to connect to my phone so I can watch it but this is the part I'm not sure is possible without wifi. It has to be suitable for outdoor use and have a long battery life as I will be away across country for the winter.

    Recommendations for Mesh System?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 09:20 PM PDT

Hello! My family just updated to NBN and got an ASUS RT-AC68U to connect to the modem - but sadly this had to be installed in the living room, meaning that my PC and Playstation now have to be connected to the internet via Wi-Fi. This might seem all well and good, but I have noticed a noticeable drop in internet performance when gaming so I'm thinking of setting up some kind of extension - whether it be through a powerline adapter kit, setting up a mesh network (which I guess would allow me to use ethernet?) or anything of the sort - would you please give me some recommendations? I'm really new to this field and my research hasn't been very conclusive

EDIT: just wanted to add, my room is not that far away from the router, but I'm guessing the poor connection is because of the two walls separating the devices

Nest Can Outdoors vs Wyze Cam V3

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 08:13 PM PDT

I currently use Nest, but because of the much lower upfront price, 24/7 recording, much lower monthly subscription price and many of the same features I wanted to see if switching to the new Wyze Cam V3 would be wise or not.

    Thoughts?

    Xiaomi temperature sensor problems

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 03:39 AM PDT

Hey everyone, I got one of these on AliExpress instead of buying here locally where the stores were advertising it as "works with Alexa" and I'm running into a few issues

First and foremost, whilst it does detect it as a new device in the Alexa app, every time I click into it, it says waiting for Xiaomi then unavailable with a "Device is unresponsive" message at the top. Although I can go into the Mi home app and see the live temperature. Has anyone got this functioning with Alexa?

Secondly is there any way to get it onto home assistant without additional hardware, all the videos I can find on YouTube have extra hardware requirements.

    Thanks :)

    Lutron Caseta Motion Sensor placement

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 08:04 PM PDT

Could you mount this flat against the ceiling or does it have to be vertical so you could use it to keep the lights on when your in the shower, my sensor switch turns off the lights when I'm in the shower & was wondering if this would work better

    CT100 batteries draining fast

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 08:01 PM PDT

I have a CT100 thermostat and the batteries are draining in about a week. I don't have a c-wire so I need to power it off the batteries. Below are a couple pictures of the wiring. Is this connected properly or could it be a setting that's causing the issue?

I do have it linked to a SmartThings hub.

I'm game to buy another thermostat but want to see if I can get this thing working first. Any help would be appreciated!

iHome ISP6x outlets turning off and back on, on their own!!!

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 07:31 PM PDT

I don't get what's happening here, but it's driving me nuts! This happened on and off (no pun intended) just recently the other week too, and while a factory reset made things right for a little while, the problem has now returned! Now, I will say that I have them being integrated into both Google Home and HomeKit is causing them to freak out? I just don't know what's going on here as I've had these devices linked into both HomeKit and Google Home for years now without issue...

MQTT app I wrote that supports Siri shortcuts

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 10:36 AM PDT

Hello everyone! I realized I never posted about this on r/homeautomation, but a couple of weeks ago I found quite a few people interested in testing my app and I'm happy to announce that it's live and published now! I just released version 1.1.0 that adds support for multiple brokers as well as TLS/SSL.

    Link to website

    Download on the App Store

    Longer version:

I felt like iOS (or mobile in general) lacked a simple and easy to use MQTT client, so I decided to build my own. It started off with very limited features, but over time while using it with my own setup I kept adding new functionality. The most interesting feature is Siri Shortcuts support. It allows you to connect actions on your phone to your existing MQTT and Home Automation setup. With the new automation triggers in iOS 14, this opens up a lot of possibilities for automating things. It's also possible to trigger sending MQTT messages over Siri or manually run shortcuts over the Shortcuts widget.

The app supports both iPhones as well as iPads (iOS 13+) with all the fancy things like split screen and Slide Over.

I feel like the app has a lot of potential and I already have some ideas for new features I'd like to add. Some things I'm considering are adding a Watch app and I'd also like to check out the possibility of adding widgets for iOS 14. Eventually I'll bring this app to macOS as well (if more people are interested then this would be sooner rather than later). Feel free to leave some feedback here on Reddit or via DM, I would be interested to hear what sort of features you guys would like to see!

    Maestro sensor switch additional sensor

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 07:05 PM PDT

So I just tried out the MS-OPS5M-WH for the first time while taking a shower & the lights turned off while I was in the shower even though I was moving around, is there some way I can add an additional sensor on my wall above my shower so the lights don't go off when I am in there, the light switch is right in front of the shower, the shower does have glass doors though. I don't want to have to install another switch just to make the lights stay on in my bathroom while taking a shower, the switch works great other then this one issue

Smart Light Switch for a older home with no neutral wire question

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 06:56 PM PDT

Would it be practical to disassemble a smart plug to be placed inside of a electrical switch box wired up to the wires that are already there then the smart plug could act as a smart light switch? Most smart plugs normally have an alternate on and off button and you might wire that to a switch on a blank wall plate for manual on and off button.

    Kasa HS200 switch wiring issue

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 03:19 PM PDT

I recently purchase the Kasa HS200 switch to replace a digital timer used to control the lights on the front of our house. The timer was working fine, I just wanted a bit more control over the outside lights, and the switch was down to $14. The outside consists of three lights total, all of which are LEDs. The switch box has four total switches in it, including the one I wanted to replace. The outside lights are only controlled by one switch. Within the switch box there is a large cluster of white/cream colored wires wound together with a screw on wire cap, and I understood these to be the neutral wires. I hooked up two black power wires, one green ground, and I pulled one of the white wires out to use as a neutral. I started the setup process in the Kasa app and actually received a noticed that my Orbi detected a new wifi device, but that's where the install stopped. The switch began making a popping sound, which I believe was the sound it makes when it resets, and the light on the switch alternated green/orange. I double checked my wired connections and continued to get this popping/resetting, with the switch not functioning. I removed it and put the digital timer back in. I read online that this behavior is due to a wiring issue. Any ideas what may have been wrong? Single circuit to disable power to this switch box. House is 17 years old.

    Thanks.

GE zwave Switch Air Gap issue

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 08:56 AM PDT

I pulled the Air Gap switch on my GE in wall switch and when I put it back in. It won't connect or turn the lights on manually. I tried the GE reset procedure (3 up then 3 down) but nothing. Is there another procedures I should try or is the switch busted?

    Also I'm using SmartThings.

Hub free AND internet free bulbs.

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 10:13 AM PDT

Is there a master list of smart bulbs or devices that do not need internet access to operate?

Obviously if the internet goes down I can't use Google or Alexa to operate them but I can use the app.

Kasa for instance will operate without internet. I noticed when I killed power to the room with the cable modem to install a mew switch but the wifi router, in another room with power, was on. So I had Wi-Fi but not internet.

My kasa stuff all worked through the kasa app.

My sengled bulbs however did not.

    Both are hubless.
