It blows mind that Alexa is still no where near Google when it comes to actual utility. I have a fire stick 4k (until I upgrade to the new Google TV, at least), so it's fun to compare the two platforms when I'm bored. Google isn't perfect, but it never swings and misses like Alexa. Check this out!

Is IFTTT Pro going to be worth it or are there other open source options I've never heard of?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 05:28 PM PDT

IFTTT is switching from all free to a paid subscription model for their service, and I don't really need the pro version quite yet. I'm just out of university, and living in an apartment has prevented me from going full home automation, as I don't have the option to replace switches, outlets, etc. One day, however, I could see it being really useful, and would definitely prefer to be paying 1.99 over 3.99 for it.

Is there a free, open source alternative? Is IFTTT really necessary?

Smart Switches that mirror a dumb switch

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 07:11 AM PDT

Long time listener first time caller.

My light switches (Leviton Decora) are in a very inconvenient location. Does Leviton (or anyone else) offer a light switch that just mirrors those smart switches? Does not need to be hardwired but through Bluetooth or magic turns off the lights. I have flic but it has a huge delay and just doesn't make sense to guests.

I keep seeing this item: "Leviton - Decora Smart Coordinating Switch Remote" but I cannot quite figure out what it does.

Big smart home enthusiast but I do not actually know how anything works I just fumble around with a really backwards setup half the time.

Is Smartthings going out the window?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 01:57 PM PDT

So as the title suggests, is Smartthings starting to fade out? I have noticed several times over the last couple of months my V2 hub loses connection. I had decided I would buy a V3 and upgrade in hopes that would fix the issue, but I can't seem to find just a V3 (2018) hub anywhere. I can find them on the UK Samsung site, but not in the US. This is slightly disheartening considering my whole automation system is currently built around Samsung, however, I can control everything through my Echo Show if need be. That being said, is it time to start transitioning away from Samsung? Should I try and find another hub? Should I just use Alexa? I really prefer everything not to be over wifi, I enjoy having Zigbee and Z wave options, but I don't want to expand my current system if I can not upgrade the hub. What are your thoughts on Smartthings?

Automation to listen to pre-recorded sounds or beeps?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 06:52 AM PDT

Hey guys. Like most of you, I'm starting to get crazy walking around the house looking for what else can I automate 😆 and I was wondering about one thing. Is it possible to use Google Home, Amazon Echo or even a Raspberry Pi with a mic to listen to pre-recorded sounds and beeps? For example, if I record the beeping from my microwave or my Dishwasher and let the device know which is which, I could setup an automation to trigger a notification on my phone saying they're finished.

I tried to do a search around the internet for something similar and the only thing I found was this project that uses Machine Learning and other algorithms to identify clusters but it seems it was just part of someone's thesis and never really got to life. Also would I be wrong to assume if I have a pre-recorded audio from the beeps, I wouldn't need something like Machine Learning?

    Thanks 🙏

    New House build

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 11:31 AM PDT

    Hello Everyone,

I'm about to go into the planning stages of a new house. This will be my second new build. The first I made a few mistakes and a lot of 'unique' choices. I made home runs for all my lighting to a panel and used Insteon relays. I used keypads in all large areas and regular smart switches in the other rooms. I also did two breakers for each room (I know overkill). One for outlets and one for lighting. I had speakers in each room that were controlled by Amazon devices in each room. Almost everything else was IoT connected. A dozen cameras, etc

    The question is:

If you were going to build your ultimate system, lighting, audio, security, etc. How would you do it and what would you choose to integrate it?

Camera / software to spot forest animals

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 03:28 PM PDT

I currently have a simple wyze 2, but that won't do it...

I'd like to get a new camera and be notified if there's animals on my property or in the forest. Distance from camera to property boundary is about 10 meters.

Ideally also at night time, not effected by leaf's moving and not on a professional budget :)

SD or streaming to local server is both ok, but the latter is probably preferred. I have no problem sending this data to the cloud and/or paying a monthly fee for it. The full clips should of course be stored.

Is blue iris the way to go? What cam?

30+ thermometers, Temperature drops under 40 degrees, alert me!

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 07:03 PM PDT

    Hi there,

Im on my condo board that has about 80 units. Last year we had a pipe burst in the cellar where we thought was properly heated and another on the 8th floor. Now the board wants to install temperature sensors across the building to be able to access wirelessly but on a budget. I was researching and found some Agara wifi Temp sensors for about $12 a piece. Would we be able to install 30-40 of these across the different areas and monitor and get alerts when it goes below 40 degrees? We have Wireless access points across the building. I know there are cheaper thermometers that are Bluetooth, but they have ranges of about 20 meters. These WiFi therms synced up to our WAPs should centralize to our hub?

My assumption is that we can get 30 of these (about $12 @ aliexpress) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D37FKGY and one hub ($50) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Y4SDXMJ and should be able to get alerts through homekit?

Are there cheaper routes to do this? That job should be about $400 all in plus my free manual labor lol

    Ultraloq U-bolt C Cylinder replacement

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 05:28 AM PDT

In the Ultraloq FAQ, https://www.u-tec.com/faq/index/view/id/162.html , it is stated that the U-Bolt lock key cylinder can be replaced by a Schlage C Cylinder if you chose to rekey your locks to use the same key.

The two cylinders I have tried are too large to fully fit inside. Has anyone successfully replaced their U-bolt cylinder? Ultraloq support was unable to provide any specs. Thank you.

I'm looking for a smart light switch that requires no wiring. I'm not sure what is compatible with my Jetstream bulbs.

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 10:47 AM PDT

This is for a ceiling light that has no physical switch, just an on/off pull string.

I'm wanting to install a smart switch at the doorway but everything I find seems to require a neutral wire or may only work within the brands' devices. I'm using some Jetstream bulbs with no hub. My control is either through Google Assistant voice or Jetstream Home app.

What are my cost-effective options here? I've searched this sub but don't seem to have the vocab to find what I need

    PoE Devices

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 10:31 AM PDT

I'm building a new house and have the opportunity to run cat6 for PoE to locations anywhere necessary. I'd like to find smart devices: thermostat, security cameras, door locks, fire alarms, control panels, light switches, moisture alarms, etc. that could report to a central hub.

    Where do I start?

Anyone get the Meross garage door opener compatibility accessory?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 04:31 AM PDT

I have a Genie IntelliG 1000 garage door opener. According to the Meross website, that model is compatible with an additional accessory that Meross says they will ship to you. I also did the "pliers" test where you basically jump the two wires coming from the control switch to confirm I needed the extra piece. The wall switch (3 button model) actually has a small circuit board in it that is more complicated than simply closing a circuit.

So, I purchased the opener and completed the steps to get the accessory. After a couple days, I got an e-mail saying "no, it will work without the accessory". I sent them back a screen shot of their own website and that I tried the test without success. So far, no response. Has anyone else had success getting the extra piece from Meross and/or getting it working with this model Genie?

Does anyone have a good number for Schlage support?

I urgently need some screws and plates for a Connect smart lock that stripped or were missing from the package. Tried phone 3 times (888-805-9837) and waited for 2 hours once on hold, and tried to email (consumerschlage@allegion.com) as well with no luck. Thank you.

    Motion Detection Suggestions

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 08:14 AM PDT

Hey, folks. Wondering if anyone can suggest a motion detection product. My wife sometimes forgets the whole OIF vet thing and sneaks up on me. Not fun for anyone.

Bought a cheap motion detector with chime on Amazon and it's incredibly annoying.

Right now, I just want a steady light on my desk when someone's behind me. Long term, it would be great to have a grid of lights covering the house. (In case of home invasion, makes it easier to figure out how to get to my kids.)

Anyone know of a detector/steady light combo with no sound?

    Thanks!

Smart heating - help needed (compatibility)

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 10:40 AM PDT

Hello everyone, I previously posted here to ask about home heating automation and would need a bit more detailed advice from the community. I'd like to know if there's any smart device(s) compatible with my current central heating setup to help increase efficiency/convenience and reduce bills

    Equipment photos hosted here https://ibb.co/qMQGvy5

    • Germany
    • Solar + Gas
    • Under-floor heating
    • The whole system is either on or off with a timer, and then regulates how much hot water goes to each room according to the thermostats adjustments (it's a basic system, no zone control or such in the programming module)
    • Wolf is the equipment brand (Pump model is Wolf Grundfos + Wolf BM Programming Module)
    • Not sure about the small thermostats spread through the house, might be Wolf as well or generic
    • The Wolf programming module is very hard to configure and not very flexible, I could use some good alternatives, preferably "smart"/wifi/app

Smart switch without a neutral wire

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 10:17 AM PDT

So I just replaced all the light switches in my apartment with TP-link Kasa HS200, but the box near my door does not have a neutral wire.

Just looking for an inexpensive switch that doesn't require a neutral, any recommendations?
